Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The doll is worked mostly in continuous spiral rounds, while the clothing and accessories use a mix of rounds, rows, surface crochet, appliques, and simple sewing. Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round.

The finished doll has a large rounded head, a wide oval muzzle, slim brown arms, long brown legs, rounded tan hands and feet, a blue overall romper, and separate accessories arranged exactly like the image. The doll is designed to sit flat or lie beautifully for display.

Finished Size

  • Doll height: about 11.5 inches from head to sandal soles when using worsted weight yarn and a 3.25 mm hook.
  • Head width: about 4 inches across the ears.
  • Hat diameter: about 3.25 inches.
  • Picnic square: about 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches.
  • Banana applique: about 1.75 inches long.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or cotton-acrylic yarn in dark brown, tan, cream, red, denim blue, sky blue, yellow, white, mint, and dusty rose.
  • 3.25 mm crochet hook for the doll and clothing.
  • 2.75 mm crochet hook for small details, straps, buttons, bow, and bananas.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Two small red heart buttons for overall bib.
  • Black embroidery thread for eyes and nostrils.
  • Optional sewing pins for positioning pieces before stitching.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease

  • FLO: front loop only
  • FO: fasten off
  • st or sts: stitch or stitches

Gauge and Texture

For the neat, firm amigurumi texture shown in the photo, work with tight, even stitches. Your crochet fabric should not show stuffing through the gaps. The doll uses compact single crochet, while the overalls and accessories keep the same gauge so the pieces look handmade but sturdy.

  • Gauge: 6 sc and 6 rounds measure about 1 inch with the 3.25 mm hook.
  • Use the 2.75 mm hook for tiny appliques if your stitches look loose.
  • Stuff the head and body firmly, but keep arms and legs slightly softer for a handmade plush look.

Color Placement Guide

The monkey has dark brown outer head, back head, ears, arms, legs, and tail. The face center, muzzle, palms, inner ears, and foot fronts are tan. The mouth is a bright red horizontal band across the muzzle, outlined by tan stitches above and below.

The shirt is white and yellow striped, with short yellow sleeves. The overalls are denim blue with a front bib, shorts legs, shoulder straps, and two red heart buttons. The sandals are blue with small yellow flowers. The purse is yellow with a long strap crossing the body diagonally.

Work the head in dark brown first. The tan face panel and muzzle are added separately to create the classic sock monkey face. Stuff the head firmly as you work, especially around the cheeks and top dome so the shape stays round.

Tan Face Panel

The face panel sits high on the front of the head, beginning just under the forehead and curving down behind the muzzle. It should look like a tall rounded oval, wider near the cheeks and narrower near the top.

  1. With tan, ch 9.
  2. R1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 6, 3 sc in last ch. Work on opposite side of chain: sc 6, inc in last st. 18 sts.
  3. R2: inc, sc 6, inc in next 3 sts, sc 6, inc in next 2 sts. 24 sts.
  4. R3: sc 1, inc, sc 7, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 7, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc. 30 sts.
  5. R4: sc 2, inc, sc 8, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc, sc 8, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc. 36 sts.
  6. R5: sc in each st around. 36 sts.
  7. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Pin the face panel to the front of the head. The top of the panel should sit around R8 of the head, and the lower edge should sit around R18. Sew with small whipstitches using tan yarn. Keep the piece flat and centered.

Large Muzzle

The muzzle is the most important facial shape. It is wide, rounded, and raised. The red smile stripe is placed across the center after the muzzle is sewn down, creating the bold sock monkey mouth seen in the image.

  1. With tan, ch 13.
  2. R1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 10, 3 sc in last ch. Work on opposite side: sc 10, inc in last st. 26 sts.
  3. R2: inc, sc 10, inc in next 3 sts, sc 10, inc in next 2 sts. 32 sts.
  4. R3: sc 1, inc, sc 11, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc, sc 11, sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc. 38 sts.
  5. R4: sc 2, inc, sc 12, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc, sc 12, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc. 44 sts.
  6. R5-R6: sc in each st around. 44 sts.
  7. FO, leaving a long tail. Lightly stuff only the center of the muzzle before sewing.

Place the muzzle across the lower face panel. The center of the muzzle should sit between head R13 and R18. Sew around the outer edge. Add a little extra stuffing before closing the final inch so the muzzle projects forward softly.

Red Mouth Stripe

  1. With red and 2.75 mm hook, ch 17.
  2. R1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. 16 sts.
  3. R2: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. 16 sts.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail.

Sew the red stripe horizontally across the center of the muzzle. It should be slightly inset from both rounded ends, leaving tan muzzle visible around it. Use small red stitches and keep the stripe straight, like a soft oval bar.

Nostrils and Eyes

  • Use black embroidery thread for two vertical oval eyes on the tan face panel, above the muzzle.
  • Place each eye about 4 rounds tall and 2 stitches wide.
  • Space the eyes about 4 stitches apart.
  • Embroider two small vertical nostrils on the upper tan area of the muzzle, directly above the red stripe.
  • Each nostril is 2 short stitches tall.

Ears

Each ear has a tan center and dark brown outer edge. The ears are round and sit level with the top of the muzzle, slightly out from the sides of the head. Do not overstuff them; they should look like flat padded circles.

Inner Ear, Make 2

  1. With tan, R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat around. 18 sts.

  5. Place one tan inner ear circle on top of one dark brown circle.
  6. Working through both layers, R5: sc in each st around with dark brown. 24 sts.
  7. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Sew ears to the sides of the head between R10 and R16. The ears should be slightly behind the face panel edge, with the tan centers facing forward. Stitch firmly around the lower half so they do not flop too much.

Body

The body is worked from the bottom upward in dark brown, then covered by the shirt and overalls. The visible brown neck is short, while the clothing gives the body its final shape. Stuff the body firmly enough to support the large head.

Legs, Make 2

Sew the legs to the bottom of the body, spaced about 4 stitches apart. The feet should point forward, with the tan toe sections visible below the blue overall shorts. Make sure the legs are long and straight like the image.

Arms, Make 2

The arms have tan rounded hands and long dark brown sleeves or fur sections. They hang down from the short yellow sleeves and end just below the waist. Stuff the hands more than the upper arms for a soft mitten shape.

  1. With tan, R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. R3-R5: sc in each st around. 12 sts.

  7. Stuff hand firmly and arm lightly.
  8. Flatten top and sc 4 through both layers to close.
  9. FO, leaving a long tail.

Sew the arms to each side of the body around R17 of the body, angled slightly downward. The hands should sit near the bottom of the overall shorts. Sew through the shoulder area several times so the arms hold their position.

Tail

The tail is dark brown, narrow, and slightly curved. It comes from the lower back and rests along the left side of the doll in the image. Do not stuff the tail heavily; a soft flexible tail looks more natural.

  1. With dark brown, R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2-R25: sc in each st around. 6 sts.
  3. Lightly stuff every few rounds, or leave unstuffed for a flexible tail.
  4. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the tail to the lower back of the body around R7. Curve it toward the doll’s left side. Add a few hidden stitches halfway down the tail if you want it to stay gently angled when the doll is displayed flat.

Clothing

Yellow and White Striped Shirt

The shirt is crocheted directly onto the body before the overalls are added. It has narrow white and yellow stripes across the chest and bright yellow short sleeves. Use simple color changes and carry the unused yarn inside where possible.

The head should be larger than the body and slightly wider than the shoulders. The muzzle should be broad and rounded, not narrow. The ears should sit at the same height as the face, and the red smile stripe should be perfectly horizontal across the center of the muzzle.

The arms should look slim and long, with tan rounded hands. The legs should be longer than the body’s lower half, with visible dark brown sections between the overall shorts and cream sock bands. The feet point forward, and the sandals sit low on the tan toes.

The overalls should look like soft denim shorts. Keep the bib centered and flat, with the red heart buttons sitting at the upper corners. The yellow purse strap crosses the body diagonally, making a clear line over the blue bib and striped shirt.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Before tying off the last ends, check that the doll’s face is symmetrical. The eyes should sit vertically above the muzzle, the nostrils should be small and centered, and the red mouth stripe should not tilt. Pin everything first, then sew when the placement looks right.

  • Use tan yarn to close any small gaps around the muzzle.
  • Use dark brown yarn to secure the ears and tail invisibly.
  • Use tiny black straight stitches for eyes and nostrils, not bulky knots.
  • Use red thread or red yarn to sew the heart buttons securely.
  • Use yellow yarn to tack the purse strap at the shoulder if it slips.

Care Notes

Spot clean the doll with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak if you used glued or delicate buttons. Press out extra moisture with a towel and reshape the head, muzzle, hat, and overalls while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is large, round, and firmly stuffed.
  • The muzzle is raised, wide, and centered.
  • The red mouth stripe is straight and bold.
  • The denim overalls have a front bib, straps, shorts legs, and heart buttons.
  • The yellow purse crosses the body diagonally.
  • The sandals have yellow flowers.
  • The hat has blue crown, darker brim, red band, and red tie.
  • The picnic square has mint border and two banana appliques.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished set away from direct sunlight to keep the yellow, blue, and red colors bright. Keep small accessories with the doll in a breathable cotton bag. If gifting to a child, sew all details securely and avoid loose buttons for very young children.

To refresh the shape after storage, gently fluff the doll with your hands and smooth the muzzle, ears, bow, and purse strap. The hat brim can be flattened with light finger blocking. Let every piece dry completely before placing it in a closed container.
