Create a detailed woodland camping play mat with a bright turquoise pond, grassy banks, waterfall rocks, a striped log raft, three tiny rafting animals, a cozy A-frame tent, birch tree, pine trees, cattails, mushrooms, lily pads, fish, campfire, stacked logs, flowers, and the little “Woolfall Pond” sign shown in the image.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This design is worked as a flat rectangular play mat with raised appliqué details and stuffed miniature pieces. The pond is crocheted first as a shaped blue base. The green land sections are made separately and sewn around the water so the edge looks naturally curved like the picture.
The animals are small amigurumi pieces sized to sit on the raft. Their bodies are simple ovals with detailed ears, snouts, tails, paws, vests, and scarves. Use firm stitches and light stuffing so they sit upright without looking bulky.
- Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate
- Finished mat size: about 24 in wide x 18 in deep
- Raft size: about 5.5 in wide x 4.25 in deep
- Animal height while sitting: about 3.25 in
- Stitch style: tight amigurumi single crochet, surface crochet, embroidery, and small appliqués
Materials
- DK weight cotton or cotton-acrylic yarn in turquoise, aqua, light blue, grass green, moss green, dark green, tan, brown, dark brown, cream, gray, white, orange rust, golden yellow, red, purple, lavender, and black
- 3.0 mm crochet hook for the mat and flat pieces
- 2.5 mm crochet hook for animals, flowers, mushrooms, fish, and tiny details
- Polyester fiberfill
- Yarn needle
- Stitch markers
- Scissors
- 8 mm safety eyes or embroidered black eyes for animals
- Black embroidery thread
- Small amount of white yarn for water ripples
- Optional: plastic canvas or felt backing for a firmer play mat
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- tr = treble crochet
- inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
- dec = invisible single crochet decrease
- BLO = back loop only
- FLO = front loop only
- MR = magic ring
- FO = fasten off
- st = stitch
- Rnd = round
- Row = row
Gauge and Tension
Using a 3.0 mm hook, 20 sc x 22 rows should measure about 4 in x 4 in. For the small animals, use a 2.5 mm hook and tight tension so the stuffing does not show. The exact gauge is less important than keeping every miniature piece proportional.
The mat should stay flat, while the animals, raft logs, rocks, trees, and mushrooms should be firm. Stuff the raft logs and waterfall rocks lightly. Stuff the animals more firmly at the head and lower body so they sit correctly.
Color Placement Guide
- Pond: bright turquoise center with aqua and light blue curved ripple lines
- Land: grass green base with moss green edging and darker green plants
- Raft: brown log tubes with tan spiral ends and darker tie bands
- Tent: orange body with green trim and small geometric stripes
- Waterfall: gray rocks, aqua falling water, white foam bubbles
- Animals: brown bear, rust squirrel, tan otter or beaver, each with small natural details
- Plants: cattails, ferns, yellow flowers, purple lupines, red mushrooms, lily pads, and pond fish

Pond Border
Join turquoise yarn at any corner. Work 1 round of sc evenly around the whole pond, placing 3 sc in each corner and 2 sc into the side of every third row to prevent curling. Join with sl st to first sc.
Work a second border round in aqua: ch 1, sc around, placing 3 sc in each corner. FO and weave in ends. The blue area should look like the wide pond and stream that curves across the play mat.
Curved White and Blue Water Ripples
Use surface crochet for the curved water lines. These lines are important because they create the flowing movement shown in the picture. Use white, light blue, and pale aqua yarn.
- Make 5 long white ripple lines: surface sl st for 18 to 24 stitches each along the lower left and lower right water curves.
- Make 4 aqua ripple lines: surface sl st for 22 to 30 stitches each around the raft area.
- Make 3 light blue ripple lines: surface sl st for 16 to 20 stitches near the waterfall.
- Make 6 small foam dashes: ch 6, sl st across the chain, sew onto the pond near rocks and fish.
Green Land Panels
The image has land on both sides of the water. Make these panels in grass green, then sew them around the blue pond with curved edges. The shapes do not need to be mathematically perfect, but the stitch counts below create the same camping layout.
Left Camping Land Panel
With grass green and 3.0 mm hook, ch 42.

Pin the pond and land pieces together on a flat surface. The pond should sweep from the front left to the right side, with grass rising around the tent, trees, waterfall, and mushrooms. Sew the panels together with mattress stitch.
Grass Texture Tufts
Add small grass texture over the green sections. Use dark green and moss green. Insert the hook into the mat, pull up a loop, ch 5, sl st into the same space. Repeat in clusters of 3 loops.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Sew each animal head to its body with the face looking slightly upward. The bear should face front-left, the squirrel should face forward, and the otter should angle toward the waterfall. This creates the same friendly rafting scene shown in the image.
Embroider tiny eyebrows with one short dark stitch above each eye. Add a small smile under each nose. For the squirrel, add two cream cheek stitches. For the otter, add two short whisker stitches on each side of the snout.
Secure every raised piece from underneath the mat when possible. The raft can be sewn permanently to the pond, or you may leave it removable for play. If leaving it removable, sew a flat felt circle under the raft for stability.
Care Notes
- Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not wring the stuffed animals, rocks, trees, or raft.
- Lay flat to dry on a towel.
- Reshape the waterfall strips, tent roof, and trees while damp.
- Avoid high heat because small stuffed details may lose shape.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The pond has curved white and blue ripple lines.
- The raft has six brown logs with tan spiral ends.
- Three animals are seated on the raft: bear, squirrel, and tan otter or beaver.
- The orange A-frame tent has green trim and decorative stripes.
- The right side includes gray rocks, aqua waterfall strips, white foam, and the “Woolfall Pond” sign.
- The left side includes birch tree, pine trees, campfire, stacked logs, flowers, and grass tufts.
- The lower banks include cattails, mushrooms, lily pads, fish, pebbles, and fern details.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
For long-term display, keep the play mat away from direct sunlight to protect the turquoise pond and orange tent colors. Dust gently with a soft brush, especially around the waterfall rocks, tree leaves, mushroom caps, and animal faces.
If the mat will be handled often, check the stitched-on pieces regularly. Reinforce the raft, animals, tent corners, and tree trunks with extra sewing stitches if any part begins to loosen. Store the play mat flat instead of folded to preserve the pond shape.
