Crochet Tutorial: Owlwood Hollow Mushroom Tree Library Village – Free Crochet Pattern.

Owlwood Hollow is a detailed woodland display featuring a tall twisted mushroom tree library, two smaller tree towers, glowing mushroom houses, miniature cottages, reading owls, lanterns, books, baskets, stepping-stone paths, mossy vines, and a central campfire gathering. The finished village sits on a round grassy base and combines amigurumi, structural crochet, embroidery, and optional warm LED lighting.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in standard US crochet terminology. Most amigurumi pieces are worked in continuous spiral rounds unless a joined round or turned row is specifically stated. Use a stitch marker to identify the first stitch of every spiral round.

The completed village is designed as a decorative display rather than a washable stuffed toy. Internal supports, craft wire, cardboard, plastic canvas, and miniature lights help the tall trees, shelves, houses, and branches keep the shapes shown in the image.

  • Skill level: Intermediate to advanced
  • Finished base diameter: Approximately 27 to 29 inches
  • Central library height: Approximately 25 inches
  • Side tower height: Approximately 19 inches
  • Large owl height: Approximately 3.5 inches
  • Small owl height: Approximately 2.25 inches
  • Construction: Separate crocheted pieces assembled over a reinforced armature

Materials

  • DK or light worsted yarn in dark bark brown, medium brown, warm brown, tan, oatmeal, cream, ivory, olive green, moss green, forest green, sage, yellow, gold, rust, brick red, burnt orange, gray, charcoal, black, burgundy, and muted blue
  • Worsted yarn in grass green for the display base

Gauge and Tension

Exact gauge is less important than firm, even tension. Amigurumi fabric should be dense enough that stuffing and structural inserts cannot be seen. Adjust the hook size if your stitches are loose or stiff.

  • Small pieces: 7 sc and 7 rounds measure approximately 1 inch with a 3.0 mm hook
  • Tree fabric: 6 sc and 6 rounds measure approximately 1 inch with a 3.5 mm hook
  • Base fabric: 4 sc and 4 rounds measure approximately 1 inch using two strands and a 5.5 mm hook

Important Construction Notes

The tree trunks are crocheted as fitted sleeves around reinforced cores. Build the armature before permanently closing the trunk bases. The central tree needs one main dowel, while each side tower needs a separate dowel.

Keep the battery box beneath or behind the finished base. Pass only the cool LED wire through the trunks. Do not use bulbs that become hot, and never place exposed wire directly against loose fiberfill.

The image contains many organic details. Slightly uneven branch angles, twisted vines, offset mushrooms, and asymmetrical moss patches make the village look natural. Follow the stitch counts for size, then vary the final positioning during assembly.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Remove loose dust with a clean, soft makeup brush, working from the upper roofs downward. Use a handheld vacuum only on its lowest setting and keep a fine mesh screen between the nozzle and the crochet pieces.

For a small mark, lightly dab the area with a cloth dampened with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak cardboard, wire, lighting components, glued areas, or reinforced platforms. Allow the piece to air-dry completely before turning the lights on.

For long-term storage, remove the batteries and place the village in a rigid box. Support the upper platforms with acid-free tissue paper. Do not compress the mushroom roofs, owl ear points, lantern branches, vines, or tall tree trunks.
