Pattern Information

  • Skill level: Intermediate amigurumi. Confident beginners may complete the project by carefully checking every stitch count.
  • Terminology: This pattern uses standard US crochet terminology.
  • Construction: The head, torso, arms, legs, clothing, wings, antennae, hat, sandals, flowers, bees, and beehive are made separately and assembled.
  • Finished height: Approximately 14 inches or 35.5 centimeters from the sandals to the top of the head.
  • Height with antennae: Approximately 17 inches or 43 centimeters.
  • Head width: Approximately 7 inches or 18 centimeters.
  • Overalls width: Approximately 6 inches or 15 centimeters across the widest section.
  • Recommended hook: 2.5 mm crochet hook for the doll and 2.25 mm hook for tiny appliqués.
  • Gauge: 24 single crochet stitches and 25 rounds should measure approximately 4 inches or 10 centimeters.

Use a tight, even tension so the stuffing remains hidden. Measure your gauge before beginning because the overalls, hat, sandals, and facial pieces are designed to fit the finished body dimensions produced by the stated gauge.

Do not close the opening. The 24-stitch opening forms the neck connection. Add stuffing firmly around the forehead, cheeks, and jaw while keeping the lower opening flexible enough for sewing.

White Eye Pads

Make two with white yarn. These oval pieces create the visible white area beneath and around the oversized black eyes.

  1. Round 1: Ch 8. Beginning in the second ch from the hook, work 6 sc, 3 sc in the final ch, rotate, work 5 sc along the opposite side, then 2 sc in the first ch. (16)
  2. Round 2: Inc, 5 sc, inc in each of the next 3 stitches, 5 sc, inc in each of the final 2 stitches. (22)

FO with a long sewing tail. Flatten each oval. Insert one safety-eye post slightly above the center of each white oval. The lower white section should remain more visible than the upper section.

Eye Placement

Position the eye centers between Rounds 18 and 19 of the head. Leave approximately 8 visible head stitches between the inside edges of the black eyes. The outer edges should sit near the sides of the face without wrapping onto the back.

Insert the safety-eye posts through the head and secure them. Sew the white eye pads completely to the head with small stitches. Use black embroidery thread to outline the lower and outer edges of the white pads, creating the bold cartoon-style eye shape shown in the design.

Upper Eyelid Line

Using black yarn or embroidery thread, stitch a curved line over the upper outer third of each eye. Begin near the inner top edge and finish approximately one stitch beyond the outer eye edge. Keep both lines smooth and symmetrical.

Rounded Bee Nose

Use golden yellow yarn.

  1. Round 1: Work 6 sc into an MR. (6)

  5. Round 6: Repeat 1 sc, dec around. (12)

Add a small amount of stuffing. FO with a long tail. Position the nose between Rounds 21 and 24, centered between the eyes. Sew around the final round while gently pressing the lower edge inward to create a softly rounded button shape.

Facial Embroidery

Use black embroidery thread and a fine needle. Embroider each eyebrow approximately four stitches above its corresponding eye. Each eyebrow should span five head stitches and curve slightly downward toward the outside.

For the mouth, begin beneath the center of the nose near Round 25. Stitch a shallow curved smile approximately nine stitches wide. Add one short curved stitch at each end to form the raised cheeks. Do not pull the thread tightly enough to distort the face.

Antennae

Antenna Bulbs

Make two with black yarn.

  1. Round 1: Work 6 sc into an MR. (6)
  2. Round 2: Inc in each stitch around. (12)
  3. Rounds 3-4: Sc in each stitch around. (12)

  1. Ch 15.
  2. Beginning in the second ch from the hook, sl st into the back bump of each ch. (14 sl st)
  3. FO with long tails at both ends.

For a display doll, lay a 4-inch piece of flexible craft wire along each stem and whipstitch it inside a narrow black yarn casing. Turn the wire ends into tiny loops before covering them. Omit wire completely when making the toy for a child.

Insert one stem end into each bulb and sew securely. Attach the opposite stem ends between Head Rounds 4 and 6. Space them approximately 12 stitches apart. Angle both stems outward by about 25 degrees, then bend the top sections slightly inward.

Torso

Use golden yellow yarn. The torso is wider around the lower abdomen and gradually narrows toward the neck.

  11. Rounds 22-23: Sc in each stitch around. (24)

Stuff the lower body firmly and the upper torso moderately. FO with a long tail. The final 24 stitches will align with the 24-stitch opening at the base of the head.

Black Arms

Make two with black yarn. The lower ends form softly rounded hands, and the upper arms remain slim enough to fit beneath the yellow sleeves.

Use the torso tail to sew the pieces together with one stitch through every matching pair of stitches. Add small amounts of stuffing inside the neck as you sew. Complete a second reinforcing pass around the seam before securing the yarn.

Attaching the Legs

Place the legs beneath the lower torso approximately four stitches apart. The toes must point directly forward. Sew the flattened upper edge of each leg across Body Rounds 3-5.

After sewing the front edge, pass the needle through the body and stitch the back edge to the torso. This double attachment prevents the legs from twisting after the overalls are added.

Dressing the Doll

Slide the overall shorts over the feet and legs before attaching the sandals. Pull the waistband to Body Rounds 11-14. The joined crotch seam should remain centered between the legs.

Place the bib against the center front. Bring the straps over the shoulders and secure them at the back waistband. Add a few hidden stitches through the waistband and torso to prevent the clothing from rotating.

Attaching the Arms

Position the arms directly beneath the sides of the head at Body Rounds 18-21. The top of each yellow sleeve should sit approximately two body stitches below the neck seam.

Angle both arms slightly downward. Sew the flattened upper edge of each arm to the torso. Add two hidden anchoring stitches from the inner sleeve edge to the body so the sleeves remain rounded and stable.

Attaching the Wings

Place the narrow bases of the wings on the upper back, centered behind the shoulders. The upper wing tips should begin near the neck seam, and the lower tips should end near Body Round 13.

Leave approximately two stitches between the inner wing edges. Angle each wing outward by about 35 degrees. Sew only the narrow inner edges to the body so the mesh sections remain free and lightly raised.

Attaching the Sandals

Place each black foot between its two yellow sole layers and complete the sole seams. Confirm that both toes point forward before tightening the final stitches.

Position the toe bands across the widest part of each foot. Place the heel straps around the lower ankles. Sew the white flowers to the outer edges of the toe bands after all sandal seams are secure.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Check that both eyes are level and that equal amounts of white are visible beneath them.
  • Confirm that the nose sits exactly between the eyes and above the center of the smile.
  • Secure the floral crown without covering the eyebrows or antenna bases.
  • Arrange the antenna bulbs at equal heights.
  • Shape both cheeks by gently redistributing the stuffing with your fingers.
  • Secure all overall appliqués with matching sewing thread.
  • Add one tiny white embroidered highlight to the upper outer area of each black eye when desired.
  • Weave every yarn tail into the nearest stuffed section before trimming.

Care Notes

Keep the doll away from direct sunlight for long periods because strong light may fade the yellow, turquoise, and pink yarn. Store the sunhat flat so the brim does not fold permanently.

Avoid pulling the wings, antennae, buttons, or tiny bee appliqués. These decorative elements are securely sewn but are not designed to function as handles.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is centered over the torso and does not lean forward.
  • The eye pads are fully sewn with no loose white edges.
  • The eyebrows, nose, and mouth are symmetrical.
  • The overalls fit smoothly without twisting around the body.
  • The solid turquoise panel covers the viewer’s left leg front.
  • The right overall leg remains visibly blue-and-white striped.
  • Both yellow buttons are level.
  • Three bee appliqués and the small flower cluster are attached.
  • The wings are positioned at matching angles.
  • The sandals sit flat and both flowers face outward.
  • The floral crown is centered between the antennae.
  • The sunhat brim is smooth and the blue bow is secure.
  • The miniature hive is firmly stuffed and its brown entrance is centered.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For light dust, use a clean, soft brush and gently sweep in the direction of the crochet stitches. A lint roller should not be used on the wings, flowers, antennae, or appliqués.

For spot cleaning, dampen a white cloth with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent. Press the cloth against the affected area without rubbing. Remove soap with a second damp cloth.

Do not machine wash when safety eyes, buttons, wire, or layered appliqués are included. Do not twist, wring, bleach, tumble dry, or iron the finished doll.

After cleaning, reshape the head, wings, overalls, sandals, and hat by hand. Place the doll on a dry towel in a well-ventilated area and allow it to air-dry completely.

For long-term storage, place the doll upright in a clean cotton bag or acid-free box. Support the antennae and hat brim with soft tissue paper. Avoid sealed plastic bags in humid conditions because trapped moisture may damage the yarn and stuffing.
