Pattern Overview

Important Pattern Notes

  • Work spiral sections without joining unless a joined round is specifically stated.
  • Place a marker in the first stitch of every round and move it upward as you work.
  • Stuff the body gradually. Firm stuffing supports the large eyes, but excessive stuffing may stretch the stitches.
  • Make all color changes in the final yarn-over of the stitch immediately before the new color begins.
  • The beginning of each body round should remain centered at the back.
  • Pin every piece before sewing so the proportions remain balanced.
  • For clean embroidery, separate the plies of thicker yarn and use only one or two strands.

Fasten off the first leg. Leave a short tail that can be hidden inside the body. The leg should measure approximately 2.25 inches or 5.5 cm before joining.

Second Striped Leg and Joining

Make the second leg exactly as instructed for the first leg through Round 14. Do not fasten off after the second leg.

  1. From the second leg, ch 4.
  2. Insert the hook into the first stitch of the first leg.
  3. Sc in all 18 sts around the first leg.
  4. Sc in each of the 4 chains across the front side.
  5. Sc in all 18 sts around the second leg.
  6. Sc in the unused loops of the 4 chains across the back side. 44 sts

Place the round marker after the final stitch. The chain bridge becomes the center crotch. Close any small opening later with the yarn tails.

Round 12 forms the upper edge of the striped pants. Stuff both legs evenly, then add stuffing beneath the crotch and around the hip area.

Beige Torso and Head

Change to beige yarn. The beige torso continues directly from the striped waist, producing the long central body visible beneath the open vest.

  1. R13: Working in BLO, sc around. 40 sts
  2. R14: Repeat 8 sc, dec four times. 36 sts
  3. R15-R24: Sc around for 10 rounds. 36 sts

  9. R46: Repeat 4 sc, dec six times. 30 sts
  10. R47: Repeat 3 sc, dec six times. 24 sts

Add firm stuffing to the torso first. Shape the lower body into a softly rounded rectangle. Continue stuffing the head, concentrating extra filling behind the future eye placement so the front remains supported.

  1. R48: Repeat 2 sc, dec six times. 18 sts
  2. R49: Repeat 1 sc, dec six times. 12 sts
  3. R50: Dec six times. 6 sts

Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch or 25 cm tail. Thread the tail through the front loops of the remaining stitches, pull closed, and secure inside the head.

Arms

Make two identical beige arms. The arms are slim, slightly tapered, and lightly stuffed so they hang naturally beside the vest.

  1. R1: Work 6 sc into an MR. 6 sts
  2. R2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts
  3. R3-R4: Sc around. 12 sts
  4. R5: Repeat 2 sc, dec three times. 9 sts
  5. R6-R18: Sc around for 13 rounds. 9 sts

Stuff only the lower two-thirds of each arm. Flatten the upper opening and work 4 sc through both layers. Fasten off with a long sewing tail.

Sew each arm to the torso between Body Rounds 18 and 20. Angle the arms slightly forward. Leave approximately 16 body stitches between the front edges of the arms.

Large Mouse Ears

Make two beige ears. Each ear is crocheted as a flat oval and then lightly cupped during attachment.

  1. Ch 11.
  2. R1: Beginning in the second ch from the hook, sc in the next 9 ch, work 3 sc in the final ch, continue along the opposite side, sc in the next 8 ch, and work 2 sc in the final ch. 22 sts

Fasten off with a long tail. Do not stuff. Fold a small pleat at the narrow base of each ear and secure it with two stitches.

Position the ears at the sides of the head between Body Rounds 34 and 40. The upper edges should tilt slightly upward, while the wide outer edges remain rounded and horizontal.

Oversized White Eyes

Make two white eye spheres. These eyes are intentionally large and sit closely together, creating the wide-eyed expression shown in the finished mouse.

  1. R1: Work 6 sc into an MR. 6 sts
  2. R2: Inc around. 12 sts
  3. R3: Repeat 1 sc, inc around. 18 sts
  4. R4: Repeat 2 sc, inc around. 24 sts
  5. R5: Repeat 3 sc, inc around. 30 sts
  6. R6-R9: Sc around for 4 rounds. 30 sts

Stuff the eye firmly, keeping the front smoothly rounded.

  1. R12: Repeat 1 sc, dec around. 12 sts
  2. R13: Dec around. 6 sts

Fasten off with a long tail. Close the opening and keep the remaining tail for sewing.

Place the white eyes side by side on the front of the head. Their inner edges should touch. Position them over Body Rounds 34 through 41, with the black pupils facing slightly outward.

Sew around the back half of each eye sphere. Add a few hidden stitches between the two eyes so they remain firmly joined and do not rotate.

Nose and Mouth

Small Black Nose

  1. With black yarn and the smaller hook, work 5 sc into an MR.
  2. Join with a sl st in the first sc.
  3. Fasten off with a long tail.

Mouth Embroidery

  • Use one strand of black embroidery thread or separated black yarn.
  • Make a short vertical stitch downward from the center of the nose.
  • Add a shallow horizontal stitch approximately two stitches wide.

Curved Tail

Use beige yarn and work the tail as a narrow tube. Stuffing is not required.

  1. R1: Work 6 sc into an MR. 6 sts
  2. R2-R25: Sc around for 24 rounds. 6 sts

Fasten off with a long tail. Bend the tube gently into a slight upward curve. Sew the base to the center back at Body Round 10, directly above the pants.

To make a hand loop, ch 8 with beige yarn, fasten off, and sew both ends to the inside of the hand. Slide the shovel handle or watering-can handle through the loop.

  • The vest hangs evenly and both pockets are aligned.
  • The yellow bag strap crosses the torso without covering the face.
  • The mushroom charm is securely attached to the satchel.
  • The hat flowers and leaves are individually secured.
  • All loose yarn tails are hidden inside the work.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Spot-clean small marks with cool water, mild soap, and a clean white cloth. Press gently rather than rubbing the stitches. Remove excess moisture with a dry towel and reshape the mouse immediately.

For deeper cleaning, place the mouse inside a mesh laundry bag and hand-wash it in cool water. Avoid soaking accessories containing plastic canvas, chenille stems, or other internal supports.

Allow the mouse to air-dry completely on a clean towel. Turn it occasionally so moisture does not remain beneath the body, hat, vest, bag, shoes, or ears.

Store the finished crochet mouse in a dry, ventilated area. Support the oversized eyes and ears with acid-free tissue when storing it for an extended period. Avoid sealed containers until every part is completely dry.
