Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is worked in continuous rounds unless a section says otherwise. Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round. The finished cow is designed to have a slightly oversized head, soft rounded body, short dangling legs, thick arms, and detailed accessories just like the image.

  • Finished height: about 11.5 inches from sandals to top of hat using DK cotton yarn and a 2.5 mm hook.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Main method: amigurumi worked in spiral rounds.
  • Seaming style: invisible whipstitch with matching yarn.
  • Recommended stuffing: firm but still soft, especially in the head, muzzle, legs, and arms.

Materials

  • DK cotton yarn in warm brown for head sides, ears, arms, and legs.
  • DK cotton yarn in white for face blaze, neck, sock stripes, and eye highlights.
  • DK cotton yarn in beige for muzzle, hands, horn base shading, sandals, bag, basket, watering can, and hat trim.
  • DK cotton yarn in straw tan for the sun hat.
  • DK cotton yarn in denim blue for overalls.
  • DK cotton yarn in yellow for sunflower petals, bee stripes, sock stripes, and sun bag details.
  • DK cotton yarn in dark brown for sunflower centers, sandal soles, nostrils, smile, and eye embroidery.
  • DK cotton yarn in orange for carrots and sun rays on the bag.
  • DK cotton yarn in green for carrot tops and small leaves.
  • Small amount of light blue yarn for watering can spout and sock stripes.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook.
  • 8 mm black safety eyes or embroidered eyes.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small buttons, 6 to 8 mm, for overall straps.
  • Optional: thin cardboard or plastic circle for stabilizing hat brim and basket base.

Gauge and Fabric Notes

For the neat, dense texture shown in the image, your stitches should be close enough that stuffing does not show through. With DK cotton and a 2.5 mm hook, 6 sc across should measure about 1 inch. A slightly smaller hook is better than a loose fabric for this design.

The cow is shaped with separate parts sewn together. The blue overalls are crocheted directly around the body and legs, then decorated with sunflower appliqués. The hat, bag, carrot basket, watering can, socks, and sandals are separate pieces so the final doll looks layered and dimensional.

Color Placement Guide

  • Head: warm brown sides with a large white vertical face blaze from forehead to muzzle.
  • Muzzle: beige oval sewn across the lower face, with dark brown nostrils and curved smile.
  • Horns: cream, curved upward and sewn on top sides of head.
  • Ears: brown oval ears, slightly cupped and placed wide at head sides.
  • Outfit: denim blue short overalls with straps, front bib, and sunflower decorations.
  • Feet: white, yellow, and light blue striped socks with tiny bee embroidery, plus brown sandals.
  • Accessories: straw hat with daisy and bee, beige crossbody bag with sun, basket of carrots, and small watering can.

White Face Blaze

The white face blaze is sewn onto the front of the brown head. It starts narrow between the horns, becomes wide around the eyes, and tapers slightly where it meets the muzzle. Sew it smoothly so it follows the curve of the face.

  1. R1: With white, ch 7. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 6. Turn.
  2. R2: ch 1, inc, sc 4, inc. 8 sts.
  3. R3: ch 1, sc across. 8 sts.
  4. R4: ch 1, inc, sc 6, inc. 10 sts.
  5. R5 to R8: ch 1, sc across. 10 sts.
  6. R9: ch 1, dec, sc 6, dec. 8 sts.
  7. R10: ch 1, sc across. 8 sts.
  8. R11: ch 1, dec, sc 4, dec. 6 sts.
  9. R12: ch 1, sc across. 6 sts.
  10. Border: sc evenly around the whole patch, placing 2 sc in each lower corner. FO with a long tail.

Pin the blaze vertically on the head. The top edge should sit around R5 of the head. The widest section should sit across R12 to R17. The lower edge should tuck slightly under the top of the muzzle. Sew around the patch with small stitches.

Muzzle

The muzzle is beige and oval, sitting across the lower face. It should cover the bottom of the white blaze and overlap slightly onto the brown cheeks. Stuff the muzzle lightly before closing the final seam so it has a raised, soft shape.

  1. R1: With beige, make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4: sc 2, inc, repeat around. 24 sts.
  5. R5: sc 3, inc, repeat around. 30 sts.
  6. R6 to R8: sc around. 30 sts.
  7. R9: sc 3, dec, repeat around. 24 sts.
  8. FO with a long tail. Do not close flat.

Place the muzzle centered on the face between R16 and R23 of the head. Lightly stuff it while sewing. Embroider 2 dark brown nostrils over the front center, each 2 stitches wide. Add a gentle curved smile under the nostrils using backstitch.

Eyes and Eye Detailing

  • Place the eyes on either side of the white blaze between R14 and R15 of the head.
  • Leave about 8 visible stitches between the inner edges of the eyes.
  • Add one tiny white highlight stitch on the upper outside edge of each eye.
  • Use dark brown yarn to make a short upper eyelid stitch over each eye.
  • For a soft expression, pull the eye stitches gently inward before securing inside the head.

Horns

The horns are cream, curved upward, and sewn on the top sides of the head. To create the curve, stuff the base firmly, stuff the tip lightly, and bend the horn while stitching it in place.

  1. R1: With cream, make 5 sc in MR. 5 sts.
  2. R2: sc around. 5 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, sc 3. 6 sts.
  4. R4: sc around. 6 sts.
  5. R5: sc 2, inc, sc 3. 7 sts.
  6. R6: sc around. 7 sts.
  7. R7: sc 3, inc, sc 3. 8 sts.
  8. R8 to R10: sc around. 8 sts.
  9. R11: sc 4, inc, sc 3. 9 sts.
  10. R12: sc around. 9 sts.
  11. FO with a long tail. Make 2 horns.

Sew the horns at the upper left and upper right of the head, between R6 and R10. The horn bases should sit about 13 stitches apart. Curve the tips upward and slightly inward, matching the lifted horn shape in the image.

Ears

The ears are brown, rounded, and wide. They sit below the horns and angle outward. Each ear is slightly folded at the base before sewing, giving it the soft cupped look seen in the photo.

  1. R1: With warm brown, make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4: sc 2, inc, repeat around. 24 sts.
  5. R5 to R8: sc around. 24 sts.
  6. R9: sc 2, dec, repeat around. 18 sts.
  7. R10: sc around. 18 sts.
  8. Flatten the ear. Sc through both layers for 8 sts across the opening.
  9. FO with a long tail. Make 2 ears.

Fold the base of each ear in half and sew a few stitches to hold the crease. Attach ears at head R11 to R16, directly under the horns. Angle them slightly downward and outward, with the rounded ear tips pointing sideways.

Body

The body begins in white at the neck, changes to brown at the shoulders, and is covered by blue overalls. The torso is pear-shaped, narrow at the neck and wider at the lower belly. Stuff firmly so the doll can sit naturally on the table edge.

The blue section forms the high waist of the overalls. The front bib and straps are added later. The white neck should remain visible above the overalls, just like the small white chest area under the cow’s muzzle.

Legs

Make 2 legs. Each leg has a brown upper section, striped socks, and a sandal-covered foot. The legs are short and slightly dangling, matching the seated look in the image.

Leg and Sock

  1. R1: With warm brown, make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.

  11. R15: sc around. 18 sts.
  12. FO the first leg. Make the second leg but do not FO after R15 if joining directly to the body is preferred.

Stuff each leg lightly. The upper brown part should be soft enough to bend at the hip. Embroider a tiny bee on the front of each sock using yellow and dark brown yarn. Place each bee across R10 to R12 of the sock.

Bee Embroidery on Socks

  • Make one horizontal yellow stitch, 2 stitches wide.
  • Add 2 short dark brown vertical stripes over the yellow stitch.
  • Use black or dark brown yarn for a tiny head stitch.
  • Use white yarn for 2 small wing loops above the bee.

Feet and Sandals

The sandals are brown and beige, with rounded toes and a darker sole. They should look like little garden sandals placed over the socked feet.

  1. R1: With dark brown, ch 7. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 5, 3 sc in last ch. Work on other side of chain, sc 4, inc. 14 sts.
  2. R2: inc, sc 4, inc 3 times, sc 4, inc 2 times. 20 sts.
  3. R3: BLO sc around. 20 sts.

  5. R5: sc 5, dec 5 times, sc 5. 15 sts.
  6. R6: sc around. 15 sts.
  7. FO with a long tail. Make 2 sandals.

Slide one sandal over the beige foot section of each leg and sew it around the ankle line. For the front strap, ch 8 with warm brown, sew one end to each side of the sandal toe. Add a tiny yellow flower to the outer side of each sandal.

Arms

The arms are warm brown with beige hands. They hang down along the sides of the overalls. The hands are rounded and slightly lighter, matching the cow’s muzzle and garden accessories.

  1. R1: With beige, make 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.
  2. R2: inc around. 12 sts.
  3. R3: sc 1, inc, repeat around. 18 sts.
  4. R4 to R5: sc around. 18 sts.

  6. R7: Change to warm brown, sc around. 12 sts.
  7. R8 to R20: sc around. 12 sts.
  8. Stuff the hand firmly and the arm lightly.
  9. Flatten the top and sc through both layers for 6 sts.
  10. FO with a long tail. Make 2 arms.

Embroider 2 short dark brown lines on each beige hand to suggest hoof separation. Sew arms to the body at R7 to R9, angled slightly downward. The hands should reach the upper thigh area of the overalls.

Blue Sunflower Overalls

The overalls are one of the most important features. They are denim blue, short-legged, and decorated with raised sunflower appliqués. The body section was already started in blue, so this section adds the bib, straps, leg cuffs, side seams, and buttons.

Front Bib

  1. With denim blue, join yarn to the front center FLO line of body R14.
  2. Row 1: sc 13 across the front. Turn.

  2. Right strap: Repeat the same strap.
  3. Sew each strap to the back waist of the overalls, cross slightly over the shoulders, and attach to the upper front bib corners.
  4. Sew one small beige button at each front strap attachment point.

The straps should sit close to the neck but not cover the white throat. The buttons should be clearly visible at the front, just under the cow’s face, matching the round button detail in the image.

Shorts Leg Cuffs

  1. Join denim blue yarn around the top of one leg opening.
  2. R1: sc 18 evenly around the leg opening. 18 sts.
  3. R2: BLO sc around. 18 sts.

Place the stem against the cow’s left hand. Sew the lower stem to the hand with two tiny green stitches. The flower should lean upward toward the muzzle, just like a freshly picked garden flower.

Facial Embroidery

The face needs gentle finishing to match the image. Use short, controlled stitches and avoid pulling too tightly. The expression should look calm, sweet, and slightly curious.

Pin the head to the body before sewing. The head is large, so the neck must be secure. The white neck should sit under the muzzle, and the muzzle should face straight forward.

  1. Place the body opening against the bottom center of the head between head R22 and R26.
  2. Use the long body tail to sew around the neck twice.
  3. Add extra stuffing into the neck area before closing the seam completely.
  4. Check from the front, side, and back to make sure the head does not tilt too far.
  5. Secure the yarn with several hidden knots and weave the end inside the body.

Attaching the Legs

The legs should hang from the lower body under the overalls. They are placed close together but not touching, leaving a small center gap like the photo.

  1. Pin the legs to the bottom front of the body between body R23 and R25.
  2. Leave 3 to 4 stitches between the inner thighs.
  3. Angle the toes slightly outward.
  4. Sew each leg around the top edge twice for strength.
  5. Make sure the striped socks remain visible below the overall shorts.

Attaching the Arms

The arms sit at the sides, beginning just below the shoulder line. They should frame the overalls without covering too many sunflower appliqués.

  1. Pin the arms to body R8 through R10 on each side.
  2. Angle each arm downward so the hands rest near the upper shorts.
  3. Sew around the flattened top edge first.
  4. Add a few hidden stitches along the upper inner arm so it lies close to the body.
  5. Attach the small flower to one hand after both arms are secure.

Hat Placement

The hat should rest between the horns and slightly cover the upper forehead. Do not push it too low over the eyes. The brim should sit above the ears, and the flower with bee should be visible from the front.

  1. Place the hat crown on the top center of the head.
  2. Let the horns come out at the sides of the crown.
  3. Tack the hat down with 4 hidden stitches: front, back, left, and right.
  4. Shape the brim gently with your fingers after sewing.
  5. Make sure the daisy and bee sit on the front right side.

Adding the Crossbody Bag

The bag strap should cross diagonally over the chest from the cow’s left shoulder to the right hip. It should sit on top of the overalls but under the arm slightly for a natural look.

  1. Place the strap over the left shoulder.
  2. Bring the bag body down to the cow’s right side.
  3. Sew the bag lightly to the overalls at 2 hidden points so it does not swing too much.
  4. Keep the sun motif facing forward.
  5. Do not sew the full strap flat; allow it to look like a separate cord.

Optional Surface Texture

The image has a handmade texture with visible rows and soft yarn ridges. You can enhance this by adding small embroidered lines, but keep them subtle so the cow does not look busy.

  • Add 3 short darker blue stitches on each overall side seam.
  • Add 2 beige horizontal lines around the hat brim for a woven straw effect.
  • Add tiny brown stitches at the center of each sunflower.
  • Add 2 short beige stitches on the front of each sandal for toe detail.
  • Add soft cheek shading with one pale peach stitch under each eye if desired.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all pieces are attached, check the doll from every angle. The head should sit straight, the ears should spread wide, the horns should curve upward, and the hat should frame the face. Adjust any loose pieces before trimming yarn tails.

  • Brush the surface lightly with your fingers to remove extra fiber.
  • Confirm that the white face blaze is centered from forehead to muzzle.
  • Make sure both eyes are level and evenly spaced.
  • Check that the muzzle is raised but not overstuffed.
  • Secure all accessories with hidden stitches if the doll will be handled often.

Care Notes

Spot clean the cow with cool water and mild soap. Avoid soaking the doll because the hat brim, bag, basket, and small appliqués may lose shape. Press with a towel and air dry flat in a shaded place.

  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, or small decorations are used.
  • Keep away from high heat and direct sunlight for long periods.
  • Reshape the hat brim while damp if it bends.
  • Store the carrot basket and watering can beside the doll to prevent crushing.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head is large, rounded, and firmly stuffed.
  • White face blaze is centered and smooth.
  • Beige muzzle has 2 nostrils and a curved smile.
  • Horns are cream, curved upward, and even on both sides.
  • Brown ears are wide, cupped, and angled outward.
  • Blue overalls have straps, buttons, and sunflower appliqués.
  • Socks show white, blue, and yellow stripes with tiny bees.
  • Brown sandals are sewn securely over the feet.
  • Sun hat has a daisy and tiny bee on the front right brim.
  • Crossbody bag has a yellow sun with orange rays.
  • Carrot basket includes several orange carrots with green tops.
  • Watering can has a handle, spout, and small top knob.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For long-term display, keep the cow upright in a dry area away from dust and moisture. If dust collects on the sunflower appliqués or hat brim, use a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush to lift it away gently.

If the overalls flatten during storage, reshape the body by pressing lightly around the stuffing. Do not pull on the bag strap, flower stem, carrots, or watering can handle. These small details are decorative and should be handled with care.

When storing the doll, wrap it loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Keep the hat brim flat and place the carrot basket separately beside the doll. This helps preserve the garden cow’s rounded shape, bright sunflower outfit, and delicate handmade accessories.
