This woodland spice merchant’s caravan crochet pattern creates a cozy forest market diorama with a leafy roof, twisted vine frame, warm spice shelves, tiny jars, baskets of herbs, mushrooms, flowers, stepping stones, and three forest friends. The main scene includes a round mossy base, a carved-looking caravan stall, a lion spice keeper inside, a fox customer, a little mouse with gathered herbs, and many small market accessories.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is worked as a detailed amigurumi diorama. Most pieces are crocheted in continuous rounds unless the instruction says to join. The finished piece is designed to look like the image: a round woodland base with a tall spice caravan, twisted vines, layered leaves, hanging herbs, shelves of jars, baskets, flowers, mushrooms, and small animal characters.
The project uses many small pieces. For best results, make each section first, pin everything in place, and sew only after you are happy with the angle and balance. The caravan should stand upright at the back center of the round base, with the open spice counter facing forward.
Finished Size
- Full diorama: about 11 in / 28 cm wide and 13 in / 33 cm tall using sport weight yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.
- Round base: about 10.5 in / 27 cm across.
- Caravan stall: about 6.5 in / 16.5 cm wide and 7 in / 18 cm tall before the upper leaf roof.

- Lion merchant: about 3 in / 7.5 cm tall seated inside the stall.

Gauge and Working Notes
- Gauge: 6 sc and 7 rounds equal about 1 in / 2.5 cm with sport weight yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.
- Use a tight tension so the stuffing does not show.
- Work the animal bodies firmly stuffed, but keep arms, ears, leaves, herbs, and hanging garlands lightly stuffed or unstuffed.
- The caravan walls need structure. Insert plastic canvas or firm craft foam inside the crocheted panels before final sewing.
- For a neat diorama, weave in ends as you finish each small piece.
- When sewing vines, twist them gently before stitching so they look like the braided, climbing branches in the picture.

- Sew the two rear posts at the back corners. Sew the two front posts at the front corners.

- Sew thick root vines around both sides and across the upper opening, but keep the lion’s face and shelves visible.
Placement of Characters and Props

Embroidery Details
Use small embroidery details to make the diorama look full and close to the image. Keep stitches short and neat. Avoid long loose threads because the accessories are tiny.
- Use dark brown horizontal stitches on the shelves to make wooden plank lines.
- Add tan labels to spice jars using one or two straight stitches.
- Use yellow dots on the lion’s apron and red dots for tiny flowers.
- Add cream stitches to the fox vest for small floral shapes.
- Stitch green veins on every large canopy leaf.
- Add white knots to the red mushroom caps.
- Use brown thread on the sign plaques for handwritten-style text lines.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the balance before the final stitches. The caravan should stand upright and the canopy should sit slightly wider than the stall. Sew through the base, posts, and back wall several times to strengthen the structure.
For the faces, keep the expression soft and simple. Embroider tiny noses with two or three stitches only. Add short mouth lines, but do not make them too dark. The animals in the scene should look gentle, friendly, and handmade.
Steam blocking is not required. If any leaves curl too much, dampen your fingers slightly and shape them flat. Let the piece dry completely before display.
Care Notes
- Spot clean only with a slightly damp cloth.
- Do not soak the diorama because the inner support pieces may bend.
- Keep away from strong direct sunlight to protect the yarn colors.
- This piece is best used as decoration, not as a toy for small children.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The base is firm and flat.
- The caravan is centered and securely sewn.
- The leafy roof has three visible layers of leaves.
- The hanging herb garland is attached below the canopy.
- The shelves contain jars, bottles, and spice bundles.
- The lion, fox, mouse, and badger are all facing the market scene.
- The stone path, baskets, flowers, well, mushrooms, and labels are sewn in place.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Use a soft brush to remove dust from the leaves, shelves, and tiny jars. Work slowly around the vines so they do not stretch. For deeper cleaning, dab the area with cool water and mild soap, then blot with a clean towel.
Store the caravan in a box tall enough that the roof is not pressed down. Add tissue paper around the posts and animals to protect the shape. Keep the piece dry, upright, and away from heavy objects.
