This crochet scene features a cozy woodland log cottage shaped like a mossy hollow log, a sweet hedgehog gardener in a straw hat, a blue watering can, a small vegetable patch, a tiny wheelbarrow, garden tools, red mushrooms, flowers, stepping stones, vines, and a round grassy display base. The finished piece is designed as a detailed amigurumi diorama with soft textures, raised bark ridges, and many miniature garden accessories.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Information
- Skill level: Intermediate, with small beginner-friendly parts included.
- Finished size: About 15 in / 38 cm wide for the base, 8.5 in / 21.5 cm long for the log cottage, and 4.25 in / 11 cm tall for the hedgehog with hat.
- Construction: The cottage is made as a stuffed crochet cylinder with flat circular log ends, raised bark strips, moss patches, windows, door, mushrooms, and leafy vines.
- Main look: A brown log cottage sits on a green grass mat. The hedgehog stands beside the garden bed, holding a watering can. The wheelbarrow and tools rest on the right side.

Gauge and Stitch Texture
Use tight stitches so the stuffing does not show. With the 3.0 mm hook, 6 sc across and 6 rounds high should measure about 1 in / 2.5 cm. With the 3.5 mm hook on the grass base, 5 sc across should measure about 1 in / 2.5 cm.
The image has visible crochet ridges on the log cottage. To match that texture, the main log is worked with alternating rows of medium brown, dark brown, and moss green, mostly in BLO. Raised bark strips are sewn on afterward to create the carved log effect.
Important Notes Before You Start
- Work amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
- Stuff the log firmly enough to hold a rounded cylinder shape, but do not overstuff the ends.
- The flat base should stay smooth. Steam lightly only if your yarn allows it.
- Pin every window, door, mushroom, vine, and garden item before sewing so the layout matches the photo.
- For a display piece, sew every loose prop securely to the base.
Round Grass Display Base
The base is a flat round grass mat in light green. It should look wide, smooth, and slightly oval from the front, with the cottage placed toward the back and the vegetable patch in front.
Base Circle
Use light green and a 3.5 mm hook.

- FO with a sewing tail.
Sew grass tufts around the base of the log, behind the mushrooms, and beside the garden tools.
Assembly Layout
Place the grass base flat in front of you. The log cottage should sit toward the back half of the base, running left to right. The left log end with the door faces slightly forward, not fully sideways, so the door remains visible.
- Pin the log cottage onto the back center of the grass mat. Keep the bottom seam hidden underneath.
- Sew the log to the base with medium brown yarn through the lowest stitches of the cylinder.
- Attach the front door on the left log end and sew two mushrooms near it.
- Sew the first round window to the front side of the log, about 1.5 in / 4 cm from the door end.
- Sew the second round window to the right end of the log, slightly above center.
- Add the moss patches across the roof, letting some edges hang down over the windows.
- Sew roof mushrooms into the moss on the right top and one small red mushroom on the left top.
- Sew the vegetable patch to the front center of the grass mat.
- Arrange carrots, pumpkins, cabbages, tomatoes, and sprouts on the soil rectangle, then sew each piece down securely.
- Sew the hedgehog to the right-front side of the cottage, facing the vegetable patch.
- Place the watering can between the hedgehog’s arms, with the spout angled toward the vegetables.
- Sew the wheelbarrow on the right side of the base, slightly behind the tools.
- Sew the tools flat on the grass near the wheelbarrow.
- Add stepping stones to the left side, curving toward the door.
- Finish by sewing flowers, pebbles, and grass tufts around the mat.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the hedgehog’s face before attaching the hat permanently. The eyes should be round and calm, the nose centered on the muzzle, and the smile very small. Add two short black stitches under the eyes if you want a softer expression.
Sew the straw hat to the top of the head with 6 to 8 hidden stitches around the crown. Tilt the brim slightly upward in front so the eyes stay visible. The hedgehog should look like it is happily watering the garden.
For the log cottage, secure any loose moss loops so they do not cover the windows too much. The moss should look natural, but the round windows, door, and red mushrooms should remain easy to see.
Care Notes
- Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if cardboard, wire, or plastic canvas was used inside.
- Let the piece air dry flat after cleaning.
- Keep away from strong sunlight to reduce fading.
- This design is best used as a display piece, not as a toy for very young children.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The grass base lies flat and does not curl at the edge.
- The log cottage is firmly sewn down and does not roll.
- The door is on the left circular end of the log.
- Two round windows have crossed dark bars.
- Moss patches sit across the roof and around the windows.
- Red mushrooms have white spots.
- The hedgehog has a beige face, darker spiky back, straw hat, and blue watering can.
- The vegetable patch includes carrots, pumpkins, cabbages, tomatoes, and sprouts.
- The wheelbarrow, tools, stepping stones, flowers, pebbles, and grass tufts are all attached.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Use a soft dry brush to remove dust from the moss, hedgehog spines, and vegetable patch. Brush gently in one direction so the small sewn pieces do not loosen.
For small stains, dampen a clean cloth with cool water and dab the area. Avoid rubbing the red mushroom caps, blue watering can, and flower centers because strong rubbing may lift embroidery knots.
Store the finished crochet cottage in a dry place. If placing it in a box, add tissue paper around the hedgehog, wheelbarrow, and roof mushrooms so the raised details keep their shape.
To refresh the display after storage, reshape the hat brim, moss loops, flower petals, and vegetable leaves with your fingers. Check all sewn parts before displaying again, especially the watering can handle, tool heads, and wheelbarrow wheel.
