Crochet Tutorial: Hedgehog’s Cozy Tales Mushroom Library House with Badger Friend – Free Crochet Pattern.

This cozy crochet project creates a tall mushroom library house with a cream stem, red spotted mushroom cap, arched windows, tiny front door, open reading room, book-filled shelves, curled side staircase, upper balcony, hedgehog reader, badger friend, mushrooms, grass base, book crate, chair, rug, sign, and small tea details.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Finished height: about 16 inches from grass base to mushroom cap top.
  • Base diameter: about 9 inches.
  • House body height: about 10 inches before cap.
  • Mushroom cap width: about 10 inches across.
  • Hedgehog: about 3 inches tall.
  • Badger: about 2.75 inches tall.

Skill Level

This pattern is best for confident beginners to intermediate crocheters. The stitches are simple, but the project uses many small parts, shaping, sewing, surface embroidery, and structured assembly.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or cotton-acrylic yarn in cream, ivory, mushroom red, dark brown, medium brown, tan, beige, olive green, moss green, dark green, black, white, gray, gold, mustard, rust, burgundy, teal, dusty blue, pale pink, coral, and small book colors.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for the main house and cap.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for figures, books, windows, mushrooms, and details.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Plastic canvas or thin cardboard for the base, floors, balcony, stairs, and door.
  • Two 6 mm safety eyes for the hedgehog, two 5 mm safety eyes for the badger, and one 4 mm black bead or embroidered knot for each nose.
  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors, and fabric glue if desired.
  • Brown embroidery thread for the sign text and window outlines.
  • Optional: pipe cleaners or craft wire for stair rail shaping.

Gauge

Using the 3.0 mm hook, 6 single crochet stitches and 7 rounds should measure about 1 inch. Gauge is important because the library shelves and balcony are designed to fit inside the mushroom stem opening.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • sts: stitches
  • FO: fasten off

Pattern Notes

  • Work in continuous rounds unless a row instruction says otherwise.
  • Stuff the house body firmly, but keep the front reading room opening hollow.
  • The mushroom stem is slightly wider at the bottom, narrows at the waist, and flares under the cap.
  • The large front opening is made separately as a dark arched frame and sewn over a cut-out illusion panel.
  • All small details are sewn on after the main mushroom house is complete.
  • Use pins before sewing. The project looks best when the windows, door, sign, and stairs are placed symmetrically.

Main Grass Base

The base is a flat green oval circle with a raised rim. It supports the tall mushroom house and carries the small garden mushrooms and book crate seen around the bottom.

Base Disc

Use moss green yarn and 3.0 mm hook.

Lower Mushroom House Texture

The cream stem should look handmade and slightly rustic. After sewing major pieces, use cream yarn to add a few vertical surface stitches from the lower body toward the top, keeping them subtle.

Add soft shading with tan yarn by embroidering short vertical stitches near the side edges of the large opening and under the mushroom cap. Do not overfill the surface; the clean cream body should remain visible.

Attaching the House to the Base

Center the mushroom stem on the green base. Sew through the BLO ridge of the house bottom and into the base disc. Add extra hidden stitches at the back and sides so the tall house stands straight.

If the house leans, place a small flat weight inside the bottom before final sewing. A clean stone wrapped in fabric or a sealed bag of plastic pellets works well.

Attaching the Mushroom Cap

Place the cap on top of the cream stem. The cap should overhang evenly, with the widest front edge shading the upper window and reading room.

  1. Pin the cap with the red dome centered over the stem.
  2. Sew through the cream underside and the upper stem rim using ivory yarn.
  3. Make a second hidden sewing round 0.5 inch inward for stability.
  4. Shape the front brim slightly downward with a few tacking stitches.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Sew the bookcases first, then the floor, rug, chair, hedgehog, and tea table inside the opening.
  • Sew the front door, windows, sign, and stone path after the main opening is secure.
  • Attach the balcony before the staircase so the stairs can meet the balcony edge cleanly.
  • Place the badger on the balcony last, facing slightly toward the front left.
  • Add white highlights to the hedgehog and badger eyes with one tiny stitch of white thread.
  • Embroider the hedgehog mouth with one short dark brown stitch below the nose.
  • Keep all facial details small so the characters stay soft, gentle, and storybook-like.

Care Notes

This mushroom library house is a decorative crochet piece. It contains small parts, structured inserts, and embroidered details, so it is not intended for rough play or very young children.

  • Spot clean only with a damp cloth.
  • Do not soak the project because the inner structure may soften.
  • Let the piece air dry fully before storing.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight to protect the red cap and book colors.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The mushroom cap is centered and slightly overhangs the house.
  • The cream stem stands straight on the green base.
  • The large arched opening frames the reading room clearly.

  • The curved staircase reaches from the lower right side to the balcony.
  • All windows have dark frames and crossbars.
  • The sign is centered between the reading room and front door.
  • Mushrooms, leaves, grass tufts, book crate, and stones fill the base evenly.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Use a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush to remove dust from the cap spots, balcony rails, bookcases, and tiny mushrooms. Brush gently in the direction of the stitches.

For small stains, dampen a white cloth with cool water and press lightly. Avoid rubbing across embroidered details, especially the sign lettering, window bars, and character faces.

Store the mushroom library upright in a dry place. If storing long term, place tissue around the balcony and staircase so they do not bend. Keep the piece in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic.

To refresh the shape, lightly fluff the mushroom cap with your fingers and straighten the balcony rails. Do not use heat, steam, or an iron on the finished crochet house.
