This sweet knitted golden cocker spaniel girl is designed with a round puppy face, glossy safety eyes, a black stitched nose, long curly floppy ears, a blue Fair Isle cardigan, striped inner shirt, flower shoulder bag, knit beret, blue sandals, a tiny bow, necklace charm, watering can, and potted flower. The finished doll has a soft garden-table look with detailed accessories matching the image.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Finished Size
- Main doll: about 10.5 inches tall when worked with DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles.
- Head width: about 4 inches across after stuffing.
- Curly ears: about 3.75 inches long from the side of the head.
- Cardigan: removable-look but sewn in place for stability.
- Flower bag: about 2 inches wide with a long cream strap crossing the body.
- Beret: about 3.25 inches wide, slightly domed, placed beside the doll or lightly tacked near the hand.
Skill Level
This pattern is best for an advanced beginner who is comfortable knitting small pieces, increasing, decreasing, seaming, stuffing, and changing colors. The Fair Isle details are made with simple stranded rows and duplicate-stitch embroidery, so the cardigan can still be completed by a patient newer knitter.
Materials
- DK weight yarn in golden yellow for the spaniel body.
- DK weight yarn in deep denim blue for cardigan, sandals, bag, beret, and watering can stripes.
- DK weight yarn in oatmeal cream for Fair Isle motifs, bag strap, sandal soles, muzzle shading, and cardigan patterning.

- 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop.
- 2.5 mm needles for tighter accessories.

Gauge
- Doll gauge: 7 stitches and 10 rounds = 1 inch in stockinette after firm stuffing.
- Accessory gauge: 8 stitches and 11 rows = 1 inch in stockinette using 2.5 mm needles.
- Important: The fabric should be dense enough that stuffing does not show through. If gaps appear, go down one needle size.

Pattern Notes
The spaniel is knitted in small shaped pieces and sewn together. The head is large and rounded, the body is shorter and slim, the legs are straight, and the floppy ears are wide panels covered with knitted loop curls. Keep the stuffing firm in the head and softer in the ears so the puppy keeps the gentle cocker spaniel shape.
The cardigan is worked as a separate garment panel and sewn around the body. The Fair Isle look is created with blue as the main color and oatmeal cream motifs. For easier knitting, the larger diamond shapes may be duplicate-stitched after knitting the blue cardigan base.
Color Placement Guide

Sew the muzzle between the eyes and lower face, with the top edge sitting about 3 rounds below the eyes. Add a tiny amount of stuffing under the center before closing the seam. The muzzle should look softly raised, not pointed.
Nose and Mouth
- With black yarn, embroider a rounded oval nose over the top center of the muzzle. Cover an area about 5 sts wide and 4 rows tall.
- Make horizontal satin stitches first, then add two vertical securing stitches at the center.
- From the bottom center of the nose, stitch one straight black line downward for 4 rows.

- Add a very small tan stitch under the mouth if you want a soft chin crease.
Body
The body is smaller than the head and slightly pear-shaped. It is knitted in golden yellow, then covered partly by the cardigan and striped shirt. Keep the upper body narrower so the cardigan sits cleanly over the shoulders.

- Place the lines over the front top of each foot, about 3 sts apart.

Loop Curls
Use the same golden yellow yarn. The loops should be dense, plush, and uneven enough to look natural. Cover only the front and outer side of each ear. Leave the inner side flatter so it rests against the head.
- Thread a tapestry needle with golden yarn.
- Starting at the top outer edge, insert the needle through one knitted stitch and pull a loop about 1 inch long.
- Anchor the loop by taking a tiny backstitch into the same knitted stitch.
- Move 1 stitch to the side and 1 row down, then make the next loop.
- Work loops in staggered columns across the ear.
- Make 7 loop columns across the widest part of each ear.
- Make loops shorter near the top, about 0.75 inch, and longer near the lower sides, about 1.25 inches.
- After all loops are made, trim only uneven ends if needed. Do not cut the loops open unless you want a shaggier look.
Blue Fair Isle Cardigan
The cardigan is worked flat from the lower edge upward. It has blue fronts, blue sleeves, cream Fair Isle diamonds, cream bands, and small tan buttons down the front. It should sit open enough to show the striped shirt panel.

Duplicate-Stitch Diamonds
To match the cardigan in the image, add cream diamond shapes after knitting. This method keeps the small garment easier to manage.
- On the lower left front, duplicate stitch a small cream diamond 5 sts wide and 5 rows tall.
- On the lower right front, duplicate stitch a matching diamond 5 sts wide and 5 rows tall.
- On the back center, duplicate stitch one larger diamond 7 sts wide and 7 rows tall if the back will be visible.
- Add tiny blue center stitches inside cream diamonds where needed for the classic Fair Isle look.
- Keep floats and duplicate stitches loose so the cardigan does not pucker.

- Place the beret beside the doll or tack it lightly to one side for display.
- Sew the sandals around the feet after toe embroidery is complete.
- Add the bow, necklace, buttons, and final face embroidery last.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the face from the front before making permanent knots. The eyes should sit evenly above the muzzle, the black nose should be centered, and the mouth line should be straight. Lightly pull the yarn tails at the back of the head to shape gentle cheeks around the muzzle.
- Brush the ear loops gently with your fingers only. Do not over-comb them.
- Make sure the ears hang symmetrically, framing both sides of the face.
- Secure the cardigan at the shoulders, side seams, and lower back with hidden stitches.
- Place all buttons in one vertical line along the right front band.
- Keep the bag flower facing outward so it is visible from the front.
Care Notes
This knitted doll is intended as a handmade decorative soft toy. Because it includes buttons, a charm, and small accessories, it is best for display or gentle play by older children. For younger children, replace buttons and beads with embroidered details.
- Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if using safety eyes, buttons, or charms.
- Press gently in a towel to remove moisture.
- Air dry flat away from direct sunlight.
- Reshape ears, cardigan, bag, and sandals while damp if needed.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the finished spaniel in a dry place with good air circulation. Keep it away from strong sunlight to prevent fading, especially on the golden ears and blue cardigan. If the ears flatten, lift each loop gently with your fingers and let the doll rest upright overnight.
For long-term display, place the doll on a clean shelf or fabric mat. Avoid rough surfaces that may catch the cardigan floats or looped ears. If dust appears, use a soft makeup brush and sweep lightly from the top of the head downward.
If the bag, bow, or beret shifts over time, secure each piece again with two or three hidden stitches in matching yarn. Small details keep the handmade doll looking fresh, balanced, and close to the original garden spaniel design.
