Mossy Hollow Tea Party Log House with Woodland Friends – Pattern Guide

Mossy Hollow Tea Party Log House with Woodland Friends – Pattern Guide

This free pattern guide shows how to make a mossy woodland hollow log scene with a round grassy base, stone path, tiny pond, ladder, mushrooms, ferns, flowers, warm string-light detail, and a cozy tea party inside. The design includes two little honey-brown bears, two small hedgehogs, a round table, cups, saucers, treats, a roof mushroom, and layered moss around the bark-covered log.

Skill Level

Intermediate amigurumi and miniature scene work. A confident beginner can follow it slowly because every major part includes exact stitch counts, but the project has many small details. The final look depends on tight stitches, careful shaping, and patient assembly.

Finished Size

  • Complete display base: about 13.5 in wide x 10.5 in deep.
  • Hollow log house: about 10.5 in wide x 5.5 in tall x 5 in deep.
  • Large oval front opening: about 7.5 in wide x 4 in tall.
  • Each bear: about 2.6 in tall when seated.
  • Each hedgehog: about 2.2 in tall when seated.
  • Ladder: about 3.25 in tall.
  • Pond: about 3.2 in wide.

Materials

  • DK or light worsted cotton yarn in dark bark brown, medium bark brown, warm tan, golden honey, moss green, olive green, grass green, dark forest green, pale beige, cream, blue, red, white, lavender, pink, yellow, orange, and small amounts of black.
  • 2.5 mm hook for tiny figures, cups, flowers, and facial pieces.
  • 3.0 mm hook for the log, base, pond, mushrooms, and ladder.
  • 3.5 mm hook only for looser moss patches if you want a puffier surface.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Six 4 mm black safety eyes or embroidered eyes.
  • Thin cardboard, plastic canvas, or felt stiffener for the base and log floor.
  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors.
  • Optional warm white battery micro LED strand, 10 to 20 lights, for display only.
  • Optional smooth craft stones for weight under the stone path, or crocheted stones from this pattern.

Gauge

Gauge is not critical, but tight amigurumi fabric is important. With a 3.0 mm hook and DK cotton, 6 sc x 6 rounds should measure about 1 in square. If stuffing shows through, use a smaller hook.

Abbreviations in US Terms

  • MR: magic ring.
  • ch: chain.
  • sl st: slip stitch.
  • sc: single crochet.
  • hdc: half double crochet.
  • dc: double crochet.
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch.
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease.
  • BLO: back loop only.
  • FLO: front loop only.
  • st or sts: stitch or stitches.
  • R: round.
  • FO: fasten off.

Important Construction Notes

The scene is built in layers. First make the grassy base, then the log shell, then the interior tea room. After the large pieces are stable, add the miniature animals, ladder, pond, mushrooms, plants, flowers, and lights.

Work most amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless a joined round is clearly stated. Stuff firmly, but do not overstuff the log or the base. The log should look soft and rounded, not hard and boxy.

The image shows a bark log with a large oval opening and a warm golden room inside. To match that look, keep the outer bark dark brown, the inside wall golden tan, and the opening rim thick, raised, and rounded.

Grassy Oval Display Base

Use grass green and the 3.0 mm hook. This base is an oval circle hybrid, slightly flattened at the back so the log can sit securely. Work around a foundation chain.

Raised Moss Texture on the Base

Use olive green, moss green, and dark forest green. Surface crochet irregular lines across the base, especially near the log position, around the pond, and beside the mushrooms.

  • Make 12 short moss strips: ch 9, starting in 2nd ch, sl st 2, sc 3, hdc 2, sl st 1. Sew randomly.
  • Make 10 curly tendrils: ch 12, work 2 sc in each ch back to the start. Sew near flowers and bark edges.
  • Make 18 tiny grass clumps: ch 5, sl st in same base stitch, ch 4, sl st in same base stitch, ch 6, sl st in same base stitch. Knot and sew down.

Large Hollow Log Shell

The log is a horizontal cylinder with a large oval opening. The easiest way to make it stable is to crochet a rectangular bark panel, curve it into a tube, and add oval side caps. The front is cut open by shaping the opening with a separate rim.

Outer Bark Panel

Use dark bark brown and the 3.0 mm hook. Work in rows. Ch 52.

  1. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Total 51 sts.
  2. Rows 2 to 4: Ch 1, turn, sc across. Total 51 sts.
  3. Row 5: Ch 1, turn, BLO sc across. Total 51 sts.
  4. Rows 6 to 9: Ch 1, turn, sc across. Total 51 sts.
  5. Row 10: Ch 1, turn, BLO sc across. Total 51 sts.
  6. Repeat this texture sequence until you have 34 rows total.

Do not fasten off yet. Fold the panel so the rows run around the log and the 51-stitch width becomes the log length. Sl st Row 34 to the foundation edge to form a tube. FO, leaving a long tail.

Golden Interior Lining

Use golden tan. Make a second rectangle the same size, but slightly flatter.

  1. Ch 50. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. Total 49 sts.
  2. Rows 2 to 30: Ch 1, turn, sc across. Total 49 sts.
  3. Rows 31 to 34: Ch 1, turn, BLO sc across. Total 49 sts.
  4. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Insert the golden lining inside the brown tube. Sew only along the bottom back and side edges first. Leave the front opening area free until the oval rim is attached. The golden rows should show through the opening like warm wooden walls.

Oval Side Caps

Make two. Use dark bark brown.

  1. R1: Ch 13. Starting in 2nd ch, sc 11, 3 sc in last ch, work on opposite side, sc 10, inc in last ch. Total 26 sts.
  2. R2: Inc, sc 10, inc x3, sc 10, inc x2. Total 32 sts.
  3. R3: Sc 1, inc, sc 10, repeat sc 1, inc three times, sc 10, repeat sc 1, inc two times. Total 38 sts.
  4. R4: Sc 2, inc, sc 10, repeat sc 2, inc three times, sc 10, repeat sc 2, inc two times. Total 44 sts.
  5. R5: Sc 3, inc, sc 10, repeat sc 3, inc three times, sc 10, repeat sc 3, inc two times. Total 50 sts.
  6. R6: Sc around. Total 50 sts.
  7. FO with a long tail.

Sew one oval cap to each open side of the tube. Stuff the upper curve of the log lightly while sewing. Do not overstuff the lower section because it must sit flat on the base.

Large Front Opening

The opening is not cut from fabric. It is made visually by sewing a thick oval rim on the front, then trimming the golden lining area inside with embroidery. Use medium bark brown.

  1. Ch 40. Join with sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist.
  2. R1: Ch 1, sc 8, hdc 8, dc 4, hdc 8, sc 12. Total 40 sts.
  3. R2: Sc 2, inc, sc 5, hdc 2, hdc inc x3, hdc 4, dc inc x4, hdc 4, hdc inc x3, sc 5, inc, sc 2. Total 54 sts.
  4. R3: Sc around. Total 54 sts.
  5. R4: Sl st around loosely. FO with a very long tail.

Pin the rim horizontally to the front of the log, centered with the widest part across the middle. The top of the rim should sit about 1 in below the top of the log. Sew through both loops of the rim and into the bark panel. Sew twice around for firmness.

Inside the rim, use golden tan to whipstitch the visible inner oval. Add vertical lines with dark golden yarn every 3 stitches to imitate the ribbed wall texture seen inside the hollow.

Thick Lower Threshold

Use dark bark brown. Ch 30. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch and across. Total 29 sts. Rows 2 to 4: Ch 1, turn, sc across. FO. Roll the strip slightly and sew along the bottom inner edge of the oval opening. This creates the rounded sill where the tea room floor begins.

Round Window on the Back Wall

The image shows a small round window at the upper back center inside the log. Use medium bark brown for the frame and pale mint for the panes.

  1. Window pane: With pale mint, R1: 6 sc in MR. R2: Inc around. Total 12 sts. R3: Sc 1, inc around. Total 18 sts. FO.

  3. Crossbars: Embroider one vertical line and one horizontal line across the circle using medium bark brown.

Sew the window to the golden back wall, centered above the bears. Place it about 1.25 in below the top inside curve of the log.

Roof Moss and Top Mushroom

The top of the log is heavily covered in green moss with tiny flowers and one rounded brown mushroom cap rising from it.

Roof Moss Mat

Use moss green.

  1. Ch 38. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch and across. Total 37 sts.
  2. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc 6, hdc 8, dc 8, hdc 8, sc 7. Total 37 sts.
  3. Rows 3 to 5: Repeat Row 2.
  4. Row 6: Ch 1, turn, sc across. Total 37 sts.
  5. FO, leaving a long tail.

Sew this moss mat over the top of the log, letting the edges curl and hang down slightly. Add 16 dark green grass clumps and 10 curly tendrils across it.

Flower Placement

  • Place 5 flowers on the upper left bark edge.
  • Place 6 flowers on the upper right moss near the top mushroom.
  • Place 4 flowers along the left side of the oval opening.
  • Place 3 flowers beside the pond.
  • Place 4 flowers around the mushroom clusters and stone path.

Bark Texture and Vines

Use medium bark brown, dark bark brown, olive green, and moss green. The bark should not look smooth. Add raised lines, knots, and hanging greenery.

  • With medium bark brown, surface crochet 8 vertical bark ridges over the outside log, each about 12 to 18 stitches long.
  • With dark bark brown, embroider 5 short curved lines on the side caps.
  • With moss green, sew 6 moss patches over the top left and top right corners.
  • With olive green, make 8 hanging vines: ch 12, sl st back across. Sew near the opening and side caps.
  • For curly vines, ch 14 and work 2 sc in each chain back. Sew near flowers.

Warm Light Detail

The picture shows warm glowing points around the inside opening and along the moss. For a soft display version, use a battery micro LED strand. Keep the battery pack outside the crochet piece and hidden behind the log.

  • Place 6 lights around the inside oval rim.
  • Place 3 lights near the left moss and flower area.
  • Place 3 lights near the right moss and mushroom area.
  • Secure wires with small loose stitches, never tight knots.
  • Do not sew through the electrical wire.

If you prefer a yarn-only version, embroider tiny yellow stars. For each light, use yellow yarn and sew a small cross stitch with 4 short lines. Add one straight stitch in cream over the center to make it look bright.

Optional Hidden Support for the Log

Because the log is wide and the opening is large, add support before final sewing. Cut a small rectangle of plastic canvas about 8 in x 3 in. Slide it under the interior floor and against the back curve of the log. Tack it with brown yarn at the side seams.

This support keeps the hollow from collapsing while still allowing the front opening to stay round. If the log feels stable without it, you can skip this step.

Attaching the Log to the Base

  1. Place the log on the back half of the base, leaving about 3.5 in of open space at the front for the stone path and pond.
  2. Pin the log so the front opening faces straight forward.
  3. Use dark bark brown yarn to sew the lower back edge of the log to the base.
  4. Sew the lower left and lower right sides firmly.
  5. Add a little stuffing under the side curves before closing the final stitches.
  6. Hide the seam with moss strips, vines, flowers, and small mushrooms.

Arranging the Tea Party Scene

Place the table first. Sew it to the center of the golden floor. Add the teapot in the middle, then place cups and saucers around it. Keep the front cake plate visible.

Position the bears behind the table. Their faces should look toward the front opening. Sew their bodies to the floor with 4 to 6 secure stitches each. Keep their arms angled toward the cups.

Place the hedgehogs in front of the table, one on the left and one on the right. Their spines should frame the table without covering it. Sew their feet and lower bodies to the floor.

Miniature Placement Map

  • Top center: moss mat, flower clusters, vines, and brown mushroom cap.
  • Inside back: small round window centered above the bears.
  • Inside center: round tea table with teapot, cups, saucers, and cake.
  • Inside back left and back right: two honey-brown seated bears.
  • Inside front left and front right: two pale hedgehogs with curly brown spines.
  • Front center: ladder leaning against the lower oval opening.
  • Front center to lower edge: winding stone path.
  • Front right: blue pond with lily pads and flowers.
  • Left front and right front: colorful mushroom clusters.
  • Right side: large fern leaves extending outward.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Faces: Keep every face simple and gentle. For the bears, embroider a tiny black nose on the tan muzzle and one short vertical mouth line. For the hedgehogs, place the nose at the very tip of the pointed snout.

Eye placement: The bears need round eyes set evenly and slightly wide apart. The hedgehogs need smaller-looking eyes closer to the snout. If using embroidered eyes, make 3 tiny horizontal stitches for each eye.

Body angles: The bears sit upright at the back. The hedgehogs lean slightly inward, as if joining the tea party. Sew the arms last so they can point toward the cups.

Scene balance: After sewing the figures, check the front view. The table must remain visible through the oval opening, the ladder should be centered under the opening, and the pond should stay clearly on the right front side.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with a slightly damp cloth.

  • Keep the piece away from high heat and direct sunlight for long periods.
  • If using lights, remove batteries when storing.
  • This is a decorative display piece, not a toy for small children because it includes tiny parts.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Use a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush to remove dust from the flowers, moss, mushrooms, and figures. Brush gently in one direction so the small vines do not stretch.

For stains, touch only the stained area with a damp cloth and a tiny amount of mild soap. Blot with clean water afterward. Do not rub the hedgehog curls or the moss texture.

Store the scene in a box with tissue paper around the mushrooms, ladder, and ferns. Avoid pressing down on the log roof because the top moss and mushroom should stay rounded.

If the ladder bends, reshape it gently with your fingers. If a flower loosens, sew it back with two tiny stitches through the center. Keep yarn tails hidden under moss patches whenever possible.

Pattern Customizing Notes

You can keep the display close to the reference by using earthy browns, golden interior yarn, many moss greens, and bright mushroom colors. Do not reduce the number of accessories too much, because the charm of this scene comes from the crowded woodland details.

For a smaller version, use sport weight yarn and a 2.0 mm hook. For a larger centerpiece, use worsted weight yarn and a 3.5 mm hook, but add stronger support inside the log and base.
