Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed as a structured amigurumi-style diorama. Most pieces are worked tightly with a small hook so the treehouse stands firmly and the tiny details keep their shape.

The finished piece measures about 14 in wide and 16 in tall when made with DK cotton yarn and a 2.25 mm hook. You may use worsted yarn for a larger display, but keep all yarn weights consistent so the proportions stay balanced.

Skill Level

  • Level: Intermediate to advanced beginner.
  • Main techniques: working in continuous rounds, simple shaping, surface crochet, small embroidery, joining pieces, and light structure building.
  • Important style: tight stitches, firm stuffing, and careful placement create the detailed treehouse look.

Materials

  • DK cotton yarn in warm brown, dark brown, tan, beige, cream, black, white, orange, rust, mint green, grass green, moss green, pale blue, gray, light gray, red, pink, yellow, lilac, purple, and pastel floral colors.
  • 2.25 mm crochet hook for amigurumi pieces.
  • 2.75 mm crochet hook for the round base and balcony railing.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Plastic canvas, thick felt, or cardboard for base, staircase discs, balcony, and tree support.
  • Two 8 mm safety eyes for badger, two 7 mm safety eyes for fox, two 5 mm eyes for hedgehog, and 3 mm black beads for birds if desired.
  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, scissors, sewing pins.
  • Optional: thin floral wire for lantern handles and branch support.
  • Optional: battery tea light only if kept outside the crochet structure and never left unattended.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in same stitch

Gauge and Construction Notes

For amigurumi, gauge is less important than firmness. A good test is 8 sc and 8 rounds measuring about 1 in. The fabric should not show stuffing. If gaps appear, use a smaller hook.

The tree trunk is built around an inner support tube made from plastic canvas or rolled cardboard. Crochet covers are sewn around the support. This keeps the tall tree upright while the bark texture remains soft and handmade.

Work most amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of every round. Stuff slowly and firmly, shaping each piece as you go.

Finished Size Guide

  • Round grass base: about 14 in across.
  • Main tree trunk: about 11 in tall and 4 in wide.

  • Badger: about 3.5 in tall seated.
  • Fox: about 4 in tall standing.
  • Hedgehog: about 2.5 in tall.
  • Staircase: 10 stacked round steps curving up the tree.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check every doll face before sewing the figures permanently. The badger should face slightly toward the fox. The fox should face the picnic blanket. The hedgehog should stand by the wagon, angled inward toward the treehouse.

Use black embroidery floss for noses and mouths. Use tiny white stitches beside the eyes if you want a shiny expression. Keep facial stitches small because oversized details can change the soft woodland look.

After all pieces are sewn down, gently press the base flat with your hands. Do not iron the crochet. Shape the tree, branches, and stairs by pinching the stuffing and adjusting the stitched joins.

Care Notes

  • Use this treehouse as a decorative item, not as a toy for babies or pets.
  • If safety eyes, beads, wire, or plastic canvas are used, keep the piece away from children under 3 years old.
  • Keep the diorama dry and away from strong sunlight to protect the colors.
  • Do not machine wash because the structure, staircase, and small sewn details may bend.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Tree trunk stands straight and is firmly attached to the base.
  • Branches are secure and do not droop heavily.
  • Balcony rail is curved and flowers cover the front edge.
  • Staircase steps are stacked in a smooth spiral.
  • Badger, fox, hedgehog, wagon, and picnic foods are sewn in place.
  • Garden plants, mushrooms, pond stones, and outer stones fill the base evenly.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For dust, use a soft makeup brush or a cool air blower on low power. Clean from top to bottom, starting with the branches and balcony, then the trunk, dolls, garden pieces, and base.

For small stains, dab gently with a barely damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking the area. Let the piece air dry completely in a shaded place before storing or displaying again.

Store the diorama in a clear display box or a breathable fabric cover. Add tissue paper around the branches and staircase if moving it. Do not stack heavy items on top of the treehouse.
