Knitting Tutorial: Gentleman Puppy in Pink Suit with Rose – Free Knitting Pattern.

This gentleman puppy knitting pattern creates a plush dog with floppy tan ears, a shaggy black-and-white face, a round white muzzle, brown boots, striped pink trousers, a pale pink buttoned vest, a dusty pink suit jacket, a black bow tie, a brown shoulder bag, and a long-stem pink rose. The finished toy is designed to look charming, formal, soft, and photo-ready, just like the puppy shown in the image.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written for knitters who are comfortable with small toy construction, but every section is broken into exact stitch counts and rows. The puppy is worked mainly in stockinette stitch, with small shaped pieces sewn together firmly at the end. The clothing is knitted separately so the layered gentleman outfit has depth.

The finished puppy has a large rounded head, compact body, short arms, short legs, soft boots, and oversized accessories. The most important visual details are the fluffy face, the uneven black and tan head markings, the pink formal suit, the ribbed striped pants, and the rose held in one paw.

  • Finished height: about 10.5 in / 27 cm from boot soles to top of head.
  • Finished width: about 5.5 in / 14 cm across the ears.
  • Skill level: advanced beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: knitted flat and seamed, with small round details added afterward.
  • Main texture: stockinette stitch with brushed or looped sections for the fluffy face.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in warm white for face stripe, muzzle, paws, and chest.
  • DK weight yarn in black for head patches, bow tie, nose, and facial details.
  • DK weight yarn in tan caramel for ears, eye patch, and small face patch.
  • DK weight yarn in dusty rose pink for suit jacket.

Gauge

Exact gauge is not critical, but your stitches must be tight enough to hide stuffing. With DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles, aim for 7 stitches and 10 rows per 1 in / 2.5 cm in stockinette stitch. If stuffing shows between stitches, use smaller needles.

  • Body fabric: firm, smooth, and slightly dense.
  • Clothing fabric: neat but not stiff, so it can sit naturally over the puppy body.
  • Face fluff: knitted firmly first, then brushed lightly after assembly.

Color Placement Guide

The puppy’s face is not symmetrical. The center of the forehead and muzzle are white. One side of the head is mainly black and fluffy. The other side has a tan eye patch surrounded by black and white shaping. The ears are tan, floppy, and attached low at the sides of the head.

  • White: center forehead stripe, muzzle, cheeks, paws, and chest.
  • Black: large side head patches, back of head, bow tie, nose, and mouth embroidery.
  • Tan: ears and one rounded eye patch.
  • Pink tones: jacket, vest, trousers, lapels, rose, and tiny boutonniere.
  • Brown tones: boots and shoulder bag.

Body

The body is short and rounded because the outfit covers most of it. Work the body in warm white for the upper chest and black for the neck shadow if desired. The shape should be slightly wider at the belly and narrower at the neck.

Seam the back using mattress stitch. Stuff the body firmly but keep the top slightly soft so the head can sit down into the neck. The body should measure about 3.25 in / 8 cm tall before clothing.

Head Base

The head is the largest feature of the toy. It is wide, soft, and rounded with a forward-facing muzzle. The color changes create the uneven puppy markings. Carry unused yarn loosely across the back or cut and rejoin for cleaner small patches.

Head Front

  1. With warm white yarn, CO 10 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: Kfb in every st across. 20 sts.

Join the front and back head pieces with RS facing outward. Sew around the edge, leaving the lower neck open. Stuff firmly at the forehead, cheeks, and lower face. Do not overstuff the top, because the shaggy brushed texture needs a slightly rounded surface.

White Muzzle and Cheeks

The muzzle is large, soft, oval, and white. It sits low on the face and covers the lower front, creating the puppy’s rounded cheeks. This piece should protrude slightly from the head, not lie flat.

  1. With warm white yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, K6, Kfb. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3: P all sts.
  5. Row 4: Kfb, K8, Kfb. 12 sts.
  6. Row 5: P all sts.
  7. Row 6: Kfb, K10, Kfb. 14 sts.
  8. Rows 7–12: Work 6 rows in St st.
  9. Row 13: P2tog, P10, P2tog. 12 sts.
  10. Row 14: K all sts.
  11. Row 15: P2tog, P8, P2tog. 10 sts.
  12. Row 16: K all sts.
  13. Row 17: P2tog, P6, P2tog. 8 sts.
  14. BO, leaving a long tail.

Gather lightly around the outer edge, add a small amount of stuffing underneath, and sew the muzzle across the lower center of the face. The top edge should sit just below the eyes. The lower edge should curve into a soft rounded chin.

Shaggy Face Texture

The photo shows visible fluffy fibers around the cheeks, forehead stripe, and black head patches. To copy this look, add controlled surface loops instead of making the entire head fuzzy. This keeps the face readable and prevents the nose and eyes from disappearing.

  1. Thread a tapestry needle with white yarn.
  2. Insert the needle at the lower cheek and bring it out 1 row above.
  3. Make a 0.5 in / 1.2 cm loop, then insert the needle back near the same place.
  4. Repeat across both cheeks, spacing loops every 1 knitted stitch.
  5. Add shorter loops along the white forehead stripe from the muzzle upward.
  6. With black yarn, add loops to the black side patches and the back edge of the head.
  7. Trim only the longest loops so the face remains fluffy but neat.

For an even softer finish, brush the looped sections very lightly with a pet slicker brush. Brush away from the face center so the white forehead tuft points upward and the cheek fibers spread outward like the image.

Tan Eye Patch

The tan patch around one eye is rounded and placed on the puppy’s left face side from the viewer’s perspective. Knit it separately if you want a cleaner raised look.

  1. With tan yarn, CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, K4, Kfb. 8 sts.
  4. Row 3: P all sts.
  5. Row 4: Kfb, K6, Kfb. 10 sts.
  6. Rows 5–8: Work 4 rows in St st.
  7. Row 9: P2tog, P6, P2tog. 8 sts.
  8. Row 10: K all sts.
  9. Row 11: P2tog, P4, P2tog. 6 sts.
  10. BO.

Pin the patch so it frames one eye. Sew it down with tiny stitches, leaving the outer edge smooth. Place the eye through the patch before fully securing if using a safety eye.

Eyes, Nose, and Mouth

  • Place the eyes 1.25 in / 3 cm apart, slightly above the muzzle line.
  • The eye on the tan patch should sit near the center of that patch.
  • The black-side eye should be partly surrounded by fluffy black texture.
  • Use black yarn to embroider a vertical line from the nose to the top of the mouth.
  • Stitch two short curved mouth lines below the vertical line.

Knitted Oval Nose

  1. With black yarn, CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, K4, Kfb. 8 sts.
  4. Rows 3–6: Work 4 rows in St st.
  5. Row 7: P2tog, P4, P2tog. 6 sts.
  6. BO, leaving a long tail.
  7. Gather around the edge, add a tiny pinch of stuffing, and sew to the center top of the muzzle.

Floppy Ears

The ears are tan, long, rounded, and folded forward slightly. They attach at the sides of the head, level with the eyes, then curve downward beside the face.

  1. Make 2 ears with tan yarn.
  2. CO 8 sts.
  3. Row 1: P all sts.
  4. Row 2: Kfb, K6, Kfb. 10 sts.
  5. Row 3: P all sts.
  6. Row 4: Kfb, K8, Kfb. 12 sts.
  7. Rows 5–20: Work 16 rows in St st.
  8. Row 21: P2tog, P8, P2tog. 10 sts.
  9. Row 22: K all sts.
  10. Row 23: P2tog, P6, P2tog. 8 sts.

  12. Row 25: P2tog, P4, P2tog. 6 sts.
  13. BO.

Fold each ear lengthwise with the smooth stockinette side outward. Sew the side seam lightly, leaving the ear flat rather than stuffed. Attach each ear at a slight downward angle, with the top edge tucked under the black side fur.

Arms and White Paws

The arms are short and rounded, mostly hidden by the jacket sleeves. The visible paw ends are warm white and rounded. One arm is positioned downward near the side, while the other bends forward to hold the rose stem.

  1. Make 2 arms, starting with warm white yarn.
  2. CO 8 sts.
  3. Row 1: P all sts.
  4. Row 2: Kfb in every st. 16 sts.
  5. Rows 3–8: Work 6 rows in St st.
  6. Change to dusty rose pink for jacket sleeve color.

  8. Row 23: P2, P2tog, rep across. 12 sts.
  9. Row 24: K all sts.
  10. BO, leaving a sewing tail.

Seam each arm and stuff lightly. Keep the wrist area rounded but not bulky. Sew the arms to the sides of the body just below the neck. Angle the rose-holding arm slightly forward by sewing the upper sleeve more tightly at the back.

Legs

The legs are short and sturdy because the striped trousers and boots are visually important. Knit the basic legs in warm white or pale pink; most of the leg base will be covered.

  1. Make 2 legs.
  2. With warm white yarn, CO 10 sts.
  3. Row 1: P all sts.
  4. Row 2: Kfb in every st. 20 sts.
  5. Rows 3–14: Work 12 rows in St st.
  6. Row 15: P3, P2tog, rep across. 16 sts.
  7. Row 16: K all sts.
  8. BO, leaving a long tail.

Seam and stuff both legs. Sew them to the lower body with the feet pointing forward. Leave a small gap between the legs so the trousers can show a center seam.

Brown Boots

The boots are rounded, warm brown, and darker at the toe edge. They should look slightly oversized, matching the charming toy style of the image.

  1. Make 2 boots.
  2. With dark brown yarn, CO 8 sts.
  3. Row 1: P all sts.
  4. Row 2: Kfb in every st. 16 sts.
  5. Rows 3–6: Work 4 rows in St st.
  6. Change to medium brown yarn.

  11. Row 18: K2tog across. 7 sts.
  12. Cut yarn, draw through remaining sts, and secure.

Seam the boots with the darker toe at the front. Add a small amount of stuffing to each toe, then slide each boot over the lower leg. Sew invisibly around the ankle. Embroider two dark brown short laces across the top of each boot.

Striped Pink Trousers

The trousers are vertical striped pants in deeper rose and pale pink. The ribbing gives the look of narrow vertical lines. They are knitted as two separate pant legs and joined at the center.

Trouser Leg

  1. Make 2 trouser legs.
  2. With deep rose yarn, CO 24 sts.
  3. Rows 1–4: K2, P2 across for ribbing.
  4. Row 5: Change to pale pink, K all sts.
  5. Row 6: P all sts.
  6. Row 7: With deep rose, K2, P2 across.

  9. Row 25: With deep rose, K all sts.
  10. Row 26: P all sts.

Sew this small panel between the trouser legs at the front, then secure the back in the same way. This gives the pants the joined look seen in the image.

Pale Pink Vest

The vest sits under the jacket and shows at the center front. It is pale pink with small buttons and a neat lower edge. The front should remain visible between the jacket fronts.

  1. With pale blush pink yarn, CO 30 sts.

Wrap the vest around the body with the opening at the front. Sew only the side edges and shoulders lightly so the front stays flat. Add three tiny buttons down the center front. The top button should sit just below the bow tie.

Dusty Pink Suit Jacket

Long-Stem Pink Rose

The rose is held in one paw. It has a green wrapped stem, two leaves, and a large layered pink flower. Use a firm yarn and tight stitches so the stem does not droop.

Stem

  1. With green yarn, CO 4 sts.
  2. K every row until the piece measures 6.5 in / 16.5 cm.
  3. BO.
  4. Roll the knitted strip tightly around a pipe cleaner or floral wire.
  5. Sew the long edge closed, fully covering the wire.

For a softer toy-safe version, omit the wire and stuff the rolled stem with a narrow cord of green yarn. The rose will be more flexible but still looks good when stitched to the paw.

Leaves

  2. CO 3 sts.
  3. Row 1: P all sts.
  4. Row 2: Kfb, K1, Kfb. 5 sts.

Roll the petal strip from one short end, keeping the lower cast-on edge tight and the ruffled edge open. Stitch through the base several times to hold the rose shape. Sew the rose head firmly to the top of the green stem.

Small Pink Boutonniere

The image shows a small pink flower detail on the jacket near the rose side. This simple spiral flower gives the suit an extra formal touch.

Sew the tail to the back body before dressing the puppy. Angle it slightly downward so the jacket covers part of it naturally.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew and stuff the body first.
  2. Sew and stuff both legs, then attach them to the lower body.
  3. Add boots over the feet and embroider the boot laces.
  4. Sew the head, stuff it, and close the neck opening.
  5. Attach the muzzle, nose, eyes, mouth, tan eye patch, and face loops.
  6. Sew the ears low on the head and angle them forward.
  7. Attach the head to the body with strong stitches around the neck.
  8. Sew arms to the sides, positioning one arm to hold the rose.
  9. Dress the puppy in trousers, vest, jacket, lapels, and bow tie.
  10. Add the shoulder bag, jacket buttons, boutonniere, and rose.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face before tying off your last ends. The muzzle should be centered, the nose should sit high on the muzzle, and the mouth line should run straight downward. Add a few extra white loops to the cheeks if the face looks too flat.

Brush the black side patches and white forehead stripe very gently. Do not brush the eyes, nose, or mouth. Trim stray fibers only where they cover the facial expression. The puppy should look fluffy, but still clean and well-shaped.

  • Head angle: slightly forward for a sweet formal pose.
  • Ears: sewn low and curved downward.
  • Bow tie: centered under the chin.
  • Rose: stitched to one paw and supported by the stem.
  • Bag: hanging beside the body with a visible flap and button.

Care Notes

This toy is best used as a decorative handmade plush. Because it includes small buttons, surface loops, and optional wire in the rose stem, it is not recommended for babies or pets. For a child-safe version, embroider all buttons and avoid wire.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if the face has brushed fibers.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Reshape the muzzle, ears, jacket, and rose while damp.
  • Let the toy air dry flat on a towel.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the puppy away from direct sunlight so the pink suit and rose keep their color. If dust collects on the fluffy face, lift it gently with clean fingers or a soft dry brush. Avoid pulling the loops, because they create the puppy’s shaggy expression.

When storing for a long time, wrap the toy loosely in acid-free tissue or clean cotton cloth. Do not compress the ears, rose, bow tie, or muzzle. Place the puppy upright when possible so the jacket, trousers, and bag keep their shaped handmade look.

After cleaning, check all sewn details again. Tighten the buttons, rose stem, bow tie center, and bag strap if needed. A few small maintenance stitches will keep the finished gentleman puppy looking polished, charming, and close to the original knitted design for many seasons.
