Knitting Tutorial: Woodland Teddy Bear in Red Pom-Pom Beanie and Mushroom Bag – Free Knitting Pattern.

This woodland teddy bear knitting pattern creates a soft tan bear with a cream muzzle, black stitched nose, shiny eyes, a deep red ribbed pom-pom beanie, a textured green sweater, brown striped pants, cozy sandals with berry details, a mushroom crossbody bag, plus tiny garden accessories including a watering can and a flower basket.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Bear height: about 13 inches from soles to top of head, not including pom-pom.
  • Head width: about 5 inches across after stuffing.
  • Body height: about 4 inches from neck to hip.
  • Bag size: about 2 inches tall and 1.75 inches wide.
  • Watering can: about 2.5 inches wide including spout and handle.
  • Flower basket: about 2 inches wide.

Yarn and Supplies

  • Worsted weight yarn in teddy tan, cream, deep red, forest green, light beige, dark brown, medium brown, blush beige, black, white, red, berry red, pine green, leaf green, yellow, burgundy, purple, and small scraps for flowers.
  • US 3 needles for firm toy fabric.
  • US 2 needles for ribbing, straps, small trims, and tiny accessories.
  • Set of US 3 double-pointed needles or circular needles for pieces worked in the round.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • Two 8 mm black safety eyes, or black beads, or embroidered eyes.
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors, row counter.
  • Optional: small amount of pipe cleaner for the watering can spout and bag strap stability.

Gauge

Work the toy firmly so the stuffing does not show through. In stockinette stitch with US 3 needles, aim for 6 stitches and 8 rows per inch. The exact gauge is less important than a dense, smooth fabric, but keeping the same gauge for all pieces will help the bear match the pictured proportions.

Construction Notes

The bear is knitted in separate shaped pieces and seamed. This gives the rounded head, plump muzzle, short arms, sturdy legs, fitted clothing, and raised accessories seen in the image. Work slowly, stuff firmly but not hard, and use mattress stitch for clean seams.

The clothing is designed as part of the finished doll. The sweater is worked separately and placed over the stuffed body before the head is attached. Pants are made as two striped legs joined at the center. The beanie is shaped with ear openings so the teddy ears sit outside the hat, matching the picture.

Head Front Gusset

This small shaped panel gives the face a rounded teddy look and prevents the head from becoming flat.

  1. With teddy tan, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl all sts.
  3. Row 2: K1, M1R, K6, M1L, K1. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl.
  5. Row 4: K1, M1R, K8, M1L, K1. 12 sts.
  6. Rows 5 to 15: Work stockinette stitch on 12 sts.
  7. Row 16: K1, K2tog, K6, SSK, K1. 10 sts.
  8. Row 17: Purl.
  9. Row 18: K1, K2tog, K4, SSK, K1. 8 sts.
  10. BO all sts.

Pin the gusset down the center front of the head piece, beginning just above the muzzle position and ending near the crown. Seam both long edges. Stuff the head firmly, keeping the face round and smooth.

Cream Muzzle

The muzzle is oval, raised, and cream colored. It sits low on the face and covers the center front of the head.

  1. With cream yarn and US 3 needles, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl.
  3. Row 2: K1, M1R, K6, M1L, K1. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl.
  5. Row 4: K1, M1R, K8, M1L, K1. 12 sts.
  6. Row 5: Purl.
  7. Row 6: K2, M1R, K8, M1L, K2. 14 sts.
  8. Rows 7 to 13: Work stockinette stitch on 14 sts.

  12. Row 17: Purl.
  13. Row 18: K1, K2tog, K4, SSK, K1. 8 sts.
  14. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Lightly stuff the muzzle before the final stitches are closed. Place it centered on the face, with its top edge about 8 rows below the eye line. Sew around the edge using small stitches. Shape the oval as you sew so the muzzle is wider than it is tall.

Nose, Mouth, Eyes, and Cheeks

  • Nose: With black yarn, embroider a rounded triangle at the upper center of the muzzle. Cover an area about 6 sts wide and 5 rows tall. Use satin stitches from side to side until the nose looks full and glossy.
  • Vertical mouth line: From the bottom center of the nose, stitch one straight black line down 8 rows to the lower muzzle.
  • Eyes: Place eyes 10 sts apart, 3 rows above the muzzle. Add two tiny black angled lash stitches outside each eye.
  • Eyebrows: Use black yarn to make one soft curved stitch above each eye. Each eyebrow is about 6 sts long and slants gently upward toward the outside.
  • Cheeks: With white yarn, make one tiny French knot or duplicate stitch on each side of the muzzle, about 4 sts outside the muzzle edge.

Teddy Ears

Make two ears in teddy tan and two inner ear swirls in lighter beige. The ears are round and sit high on the sides of the head, partly visible above the beanie brim.

Inner Ear Swirl, Make 2

  1. With light beige yarn and US 2 needles, CO 24 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 3: Knit all sts.

Body

The body is short, rounded, and mostly hidden by the green sweater. Work it in teddy tan so the hands and neck match the face.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Dress the body in the green sweater before attaching the head permanently.
  2. Sew the legs to the lower body, making sure the striped pants hang evenly and the cream feet face forward.
  3. Sew the arms to the upper body through the sweater armholes. Keep the arms angled gently downward.
  4. Attach the head to the neck with strong stitches all around. Add extra stitches at the back so the large head stays upright.
  5. Place the beanie on the head, pulling the teddy ears through the openings. Tack the back brim to the head.
  6. Add the crossbody bag over the sweater. The strap should run from the bear’s left shoulder to the right side of the bag.
  7. Check the face again. Add extra black embroidery to the nose if needed, and keep the mouth line centered.
  8. Place the watering can to the bear’s left side and the flower basket to the bear’s right side for display.

Care Notes

Spot clean the teddy with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak the pom-pom, embroidered details, or tiny accessories. Press with a towel to remove moisture, then air dry flat away from direct sunlight.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, firmly stuffed, and larger than the body.
  • The cream muzzle is centered and raised.
  • The red beanie has a thick ribbed brim, cream pom-pom, ear openings, pine sprig, berries, and pinecone.
  • The green sweater has ribbing, cream stripes, front cable texture, turtleneck, and small star embroidery.
  • The brown pants show clear vertical stripes and gathered cuffs.
  • The sandals have blush beige straps, red berries, and green leaves.
  • The mushroom bag hangs diagonally across the body and shows a red spotted mushroom on the front.
  • The watering can and flower basket are finished as matching display accessories.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished teddy in a dry place with good airflow. Keep it away from heavy pressure so the pom-pom, ears, hat decoration, and bag do not flatten. If the bear is displayed on a shelf, gently reshape the hat brim and sweater hem from time to time.

For long-term preservation, wrap the bear loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Avoid plastic bags for extended storage because trapped moisture may affect the yarn. Refresh the shape by lightly fluffing the pom-pom and smoothing the sweater with your fingers.
