Pattern Overview
This pattern creates a soft toy mouse with a rounded amigurumi-style knitted body. The main pieces are worked in the round for a smooth finish, then stuffed firmly and seamed together. The clothing and accessories are knitted separately so the finished toy has the layered look shown in the image.
- Finished mouse height: about 10.5 in / 27 cm from feet to top of head.
- Finished head width: about 5 in / 12.5 cm including cheeks, not including ears.
- Ear span: about 8 in / 20 cm across both ears.
- Skill level: adventurous beginner to intermediate.
- Construction: small pieces knitted in the round, light shaping, mattress stitch assembly, and duplicate-stitch details.
Yarn and Materials
Use DK weight yarn for the mouse and accessories. A firm gauge is important because the stuffing should not show through the stitches. Choose soft, smooth yarn for the face and ears so the embroidery sits neatly on the surface.
- DK yarn in warm gray for head, outer ears, tail, and upper face.
- DK yarn in cream for muzzle, lower face, hands, feet, hat brim, and shoe soles.
- DK yarn in soft pink for inner ears and cheek blush.
- DK yarn in bright blue for sailor stripes, hat, shoe stripes, and eye embroidery.
- DK yarn in white for shirt, eyes, teeth, anchors, and sailboat.
- DK yarn in medium brown for overalls and straps.
- DK yarn in red for nose, mouth, backpack, and tiny flag.
- DK yarn in black for pupils and mouth outline.
- DK yarn in yellow for shoe buttons and small flower center.
- DK yarn in tan for watering can and backpack flower.
- DK yarn in orange and green for carrot.
- US 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or small circular needles.
- US 2 / 2.75 mm needles for ribbing, straps, and small firm details.
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Tapestry needle, stitch markers, removable markers, pins, and small scissors.
- Two 8 mm blue safety eyes may be used, but embroidered eyes are recommended for a fully soft toy.
- Two small green buttons for overalls, each about 8 mm wide.
Gauge
The sample gauge is 24 stitches and 34 rounds = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette stitch on US 3 needles. For toy knitting, exact gauge is less important than firm fabric. If your stitches look loose, go down one needle size.
- Main fabric: stockinette stitch in the round.
- Flat pieces: knit right-side rows and purl wrong-side rows unless stated otherwise.
- Seaming allowance: leave 8 to 12 in yarn tails on small pieces for sewing.
Abbreviations
- BO: bind off.
- CO: cast on.
- DPNs: double-pointed needles.
- k: knit.
- p: purl.
- k2tog: knit 2 stitches together.
- ssk: slip 1, slip 1, knit slipped stitches together through back loops.
- m1L: make 1 left.

- rnd / rnds: round / rounds.

Helpful Notes Before You Begin
The mouse has a large head, smaller body, rounded feet, slim arms, and oversized circular ears. The head should be stuffed firmly enough to hold its round shape, while the ears stay flatter with only light stuffing or no stuffing.
The clothing is made to look as if it is worn by the toy. The striped shirt is knitted directly as part of the body, and the brown overalls are added as a separate lower garment with straps and green buttons.
- Use a removable marker to mark the center front of the head and body.
- Stuff gradually while knitting larger pieces.
- Do not overstuff the ears, hands, tail, or tiny accessories.
- For the cleanest look, use duplicate stitch for the sailboat, anchors, and facial highlights.
- Pin every piece in place before sewing to check balance and expression.

- Place blush just below the eyes and outside the mouth curve.
- Keep stitches loose so the muzzle does not pucker.
Finishing the Mouse Shape
The toy should have a big head, small rounded body, short overalls, and oversized ears. Before final sewing, place all pieces on a flat surface to compare proportions. The ears should be the widest point, and the face should feel open and cheerful.

- Accessories: place the hat, slippers, backpack, watering can, and carrot around the mouse as a display set.
Care Notes
Because this toy includes embroidery, buttons, and small accessories, gentle care is best. If making for a young child, embroider all details instead of using buttons or safety eyes.
- Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if the toy has sewn-on buttons.
- Press out extra water with a towel instead of twisting.
- Air dry flat in a shaded place.
- Reshape ears, feet, hat, and accessories while damp.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the finished sailor mouse away from direct sunlight to protect the blue, red, and pink yarn from fading. Keep the accessories together in a small fabric bag when not displayed.
For long-term storage, wrap the toy loosely in acid-free tissue or clean cotton cloth. Avoid plastic bags in humid rooms because trapped moisture can affect the stuffing and yarn texture.
If the ears or hat lose shape, lightly mist with water, reshape with your fingers, and let dry flat. Do not iron directly over embroidered eyes, buttons, or stuffed sections.
Check the sewn joints occasionally, especially the ears, straps, buttons, and backpack handle. Reinforce loose seams with matching yarn before displaying or gifting the toy.
