This garden spaniel knitting pattern creates a seated black-and-white puppy with long curly ears, shiny eyes, a floral rose crown, red collar with a gold tag, floral Fair Isle vest, soft green cuffed pants, cream garden shoes, a woven basket bag, ladybug charm, tiny hat, patterned mug, and miniature garden trowel.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is written for a detailed knitted art doll worked mostly in the round. The spaniel is shaped with firm stuffing, color-blocked facial markings, separate floppy ears, fitted clothing, and small garden accessories. The finished puppy is designed to sit upright on a shelf, bench, or display table.
The sample uses fingering to sport weight yarn and small needles to make a dense fabric. A tight gauge is important because the head, muzzle, limbs, shoes, pants, and vest need to hold rounded shapes without showing stuffing through the stitches.
- Finished seated height: about 11 in / 28 cm from shoes to flower crown.
- Finished standing length: about 14 in / 35.5 cm if measured from shoes to top of head before posing.
- Skill level: adventurous beginner to intermediate.
- Main construction: knitted in the round on DPNs or magic loop, with small flat pieces for trims and accessories.
- Style goal: a soft garden spaniel doll with a handmade heirloom look, matching the image’s outfit and accessories.
Materials
- Yarn A, cream white: body, muzzle, arms, shoe tops, facial blaze, about 75 g.
- Yarn B, black: head patches, ears, side face, about 45 g.
- Yarn C, soft olive green: pants, vest ribbing, leaf details, about 35 g.
- Yarn D, oatmeal beige: vest background, basket, shoe soles, hat brim, about 35 g.

- Yarn F, muted terracotta: vest flowers, collar, mug pattern, trowel handle, about 15 g.
- Yarn G, moss green: vest leaves, flower crown leaves, trowel blade shading, about 12 g.
- Yarn H, tan brown: basket handles, shoe straps, hat feather accent, about 12 g.
- Yarn I, red: ladybug charm and apple, about 6 g.
- Yarn J, black embroidery yarn: mouth, ladybug dots, whisker anchors, about 2 g.
- Needles: US 2 / 2.75 mm DPNs or circular for magic loop.
- Needles for tiny parts: US 1 / 2.25 mm DPNs for shoes, flowers, basket details, and mug.
- Safety eyes: two glossy black eyes, 12 mm.
- Safety nose: one glossy black oval nose, 14 to 16 mm wide.
- Gold tag: one small flat round charm, 10 to 12 mm, or knit substitute included below.
- Stuffing: polyester fiberfill, packed firmly in head, body, arms, legs, and muzzle.
- Other notions: tapestry needle, stitch markers, removable markers, black sewing thread, white embroidery thread for whiskers, optional small tan beads for shoe studs, and pins for assembly.
Gauge
Gauge is measured in stockinette stitch after stuffing firmness is considered. A very tight fabric gives the doll a smooth rounded surface. Do not worry if your gauge is slightly different, but keep all yarn weights and needle sizes consistent across the doll.
- Main doll gauge: 30 sts and 42 rnds = 4 in / 10 cm on US 2 / 2.75 mm needles.
- Accessory gauge: 34 sts and 48 rnds = 4 in / 10 cm on US 1 / 2.25 mm needles.
- Firmness test: stuffing should not show between stitches when the head is squeezed lightly.

Important Construction Notes
The spaniel has a large rounded head, narrow neck, soft seated body, long white arms, rounded green pants, and small cream shoes. The face has a white center blaze and muzzle with black side patches. The ears are long, black, curly, and heavy, so they are sewn securely to the sides of the head.
- Work the doll body firmly but not stiffly. The spaniel should look plush and soft.
- Stuff the head more firmly than the clothing so the face stays round.
- Use duplicate stitch or intarsia-style color changes for the white facial blaze and black side markings.
- The vest is removable in appearance but is written as a fitted garment sewn at the shoulders and side seams.
- The pants are knitted separately and pulled onto the lower body before final leg posing.
- Accessories are small but important. Do not skip the flower crown, red collar, basket bag, ladybug charm, shoes, hat, mug, or trowel if you want the finished piece to match the image.

Main Body
The body is pear-shaped and seated. It begins at the neck, widens through the belly, then narrows at the lower body where the pants sit. Use cream white because the arms and visible torso under the clothing are white.

Black Face Patches
The image shows black fur around both eyes and sides of the head, with a clean white blaze running down the center. Duplicate stitch is the neatest method because it lets you place the patches exactly after the head is stuffed.
- Thread Yarn B onto a tapestry needle.
- On the puppy’s right side, duplicate stitch from Rnd 15 to Rnd 31 over 15 sts wide at the widest point.
- Shape the inner edge with a soft curve: 5 sts wide at Rnd 15, 9 sts wide at Rnd 18, 13 sts wide at Rnds 21 to 27, then taper to 7 sts wide by Rnd 31.
- Repeat on the puppy’s left side, mirroring the curve.
- Leave a white vertical blaze about 12 sts wide at the forehead, narrowing to about 8 sts above the muzzle.
- Use small duplicate stitches around the eye edges so the eyes look set into glossy black patches.

- With Yarn J, embroider a vertical line from the nose down 5 rows, then split into a small inverted Y mouth.
- Add three short white whiskers on each side of the muzzle using white embroidery thread, keeping them fine and slightly curved.
Long Curly Spaniel Ears
The ears are the signature spaniel feature. They are black, long, heavy, and textured with loop stitches to imitate curly fur. Each ear hangs from the side of the head beside the flower crown and reaches below the muzzle line.
Loop Stitch Method
For each loop stitch, knit the stitch but wrap the working yarn around your thumb to form a loop about 1 in / 2.5 cm long before completing the stitch. On the next row or round, knit normally to lock the loop.

Facial Expression and Spaniel Details
The spaniel’s expression should be calm and gentle. The eyes are glossy, large, and slightly wide-set. The mouth is small and simple. Keep the muzzle smooth and rounded, with black side patches framing the face.
- Place eyes evenly before closing the head. They should sit above the muzzle, not too high on the forehead.
- The white blaze should divide the black face patches clearly from forehead to nose.
- The nose should sit centered on the upper muzzle, with the embroidered mouth directly below.
- The ears should begin high on the sides of the head and hang down past the lower cheek.
- The flower crown should rest just above the forehead, partly covering the top edge of the ears.
Putting the Outfit on the Doll
Dress the spaniel in layers. First attach the legs to the body, then slide the pants over the legs and lower body. Sew the pants at the waistband. Next place the vest over the torso and close the side seams if needed. Add collar, strap, and basket last.
- Attach head to body with a strong ladder stitch, matching the front center of the head to the front center of the chest.
- Sew around the neck twice for strength. The head is large and needs a stable join.
- Attach arms after the vest is fitted, or leave the armholes open and sew arms through the vest openings.
- Pull green pants into place and shape the seated legs so the knees bend over the edge of a bench or shelf.
- Sew shoes onto feet after pants are positioned, making sure the cream toe sections face forward.
- Add the red collar around the neck, then sew the gold tag at the center front.
- Place the vest so the V-neck frames the collar and tag.
- Sew the crossbody strap diagonally over the vest and attach the basket at the lower side.
- Sew the ladybug charm on top of the strap near the lower chest.
- Attach flower crown last so it is not crushed during assembly.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Head and neck: Sew the head securely to the body, slightly tilted forward for a sweet seated look. Use small stitches all the way around the neck. Add extra stitches at the back because the ears and flower crown add weight.
Ears: Pin both ears before sewing. The upper ear edge should begin beside the flower crown and end near the cheek. Sew the top edge strongly but let the lower ear hang freely with curly loop texture.
Face: Check that the muzzle is centered. Embroider the mouth after the nose is attached. Add whiskers last with fine thread so they stay delicate and visible against the cream muzzle.
Accessories: The basket should sit at the puppy’s right side, with the strap crossing the body. The small hat, mug, and trowel may be displayed beside the doll or lightly stitched to a fabric base if you want a permanent scene.
Care Notes
- Spot clean only with cool water and a soft cloth.
- Do not machine wash because the eyes, nose, flower crown, basket, and small accessories may loosen.
- Keep away from heavy moisture, direct sunlight, and rough handling.
- Reshape the ears gently with your fingers after storage.
- This finished doll is intended as decor, not as a toy for babies or pets.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
To preserve the doll, dust it gently with a clean dry cloth or a soft makeup brush. Work around the flower crown, ears, and basket slowly so the small stitches do not stretch.
For light stains, dampen a white cloth with cool water and press gently. Avoid rubbing the Fair Isle vest, face patches, and loop-stitch ears. Let the doll air dry fully in a shaded place before storing.
Store the spaniel upright or wrapped loosely in acid-free tissue. Do not crush the ears, rose crown, basket handles, or shoes. Keep the small hat, mug, and trowel in a labeled pouch if they are not sewn to the display.
Check the collar tag, shoe beads, safety eyes, and basket handles occasionally. Tighten loose stitches with matching yarn and a tapestry needle. With gentle care, this garden spaniel can remain a charming handmade display piece for many seasons.
