Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms. The finished piece is built as a round winter diorama with a central cone-shaped Christmas tree. The animals and decorations are crocheted separately, then sewn firmly to the base so the display keeps the same cozy arrangement as the reference.

The style is firm amigurumi crochet with tight stitches. Use a smaller hook than the yarn label suggests. Stuff each animal and ornament lightly but firmly. For the tree and base, firm shaping is important because the final display has many small pieces attached.

Finished Size

  • Full diorama: about 14 inches wide and 12 inches tall.
  • Main Christmas tree: about 9 inches tall before the star.
  • Reindeer: about 4 inches tall to antler tips.
  • Fox: about 3.5 inches tall.
  • Owl: about 3 inches tall.
  • Bunny, squirrel, and mouse: about 1.5 to 2.5 inches tall.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in dark forest green, medium green, white, brown, tan, cream, rust orange, red, burgundy, gold, gray, black, blue, sage, and small amounts of pink.
  • 2.75 mm crochet hook for amigurumi pieces.
  • 3.25 mm crochet hook for the base and tree cone.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Yarn needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small safety eyes: 4 mm and 6 mm, or black embroidery thread.
  • Cardboard or plastic canvas circle, 13 inches wide, for base support.
  • Optional warm white battery fairy lights for the tree and mushrooms.
  • Optional gold metallic thread for hanging loops and garlands.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring.
  • ch: chain.
  • sl st: slip stitch.
  • sc: single crochet.
  • hdc: half double crochet.
  • dc: double crochet.
  • tr: treble crochet.
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch.
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease.
  • BLO: back loop only.
  • FLO: front loop only.
  • st: stitch.
  • FO: fasten off.

Gauge and Construction Notes

Gauge: 6 sc and 6 rounds equal about 1 inch with worsted yarn and a 2.75 mm hook. Exact gauge is less important than firm stitches. Your pieces should feel dense enough that stuffing does not show through.

Most parts are worked in continuous rounds. Do not join unless instructed. Place a marker in the first stitch of each round. When sewing pieces to the base, use long yarn tails and stitch through the bottom layer several times for a secure display.

Round Snowy Woodland Base

The base is a flat green and white winter landscape. It has a dark green outer border, snowy white patches, a central path, and raised woodland edges. Crochet firmly so the base does not curl under the weight of the tree.

  4. Upper ruffles: work ch 1, sc, hdc, 2 hdc, sc, sl st around every 3 rounds until near the top.
  5. Top ruffle: work small shells of sc, hdc, sc around Round 8.

With white yarn, add short snow stitches across the tips of selected branches. Place more snow on the left and right edges of the tree, but leave enough dark green visible so the ornaments stand out clearly.

Gold Garland

With gold yarn or metallic thread, ch 150. Starting near the upper front of the tree, spiral the chain around the tree downward. Pin it first, then sew it every 1 inch. The garland should cross the front in soft diagonal curves.

Warm Light Dots

With yellow yarn, make 18 small light dots. For each light, MR, 5 sc in ring, sl st to first sc, FO. Sew lights along the garland. If using battery fairy lights, hide the wire under the branch ruffles and pull each bulb forward between ornaments.

Tree Top Star

  1. With gold yarn and 2.75 mm hook, make MR. Round 1: 10 sc in MR, sl st to join.
  2. Round 2: ch 1, inc in each st around, sl st to join. 20 sts.

  6. Hold stars wrong sides together. Join with gold and sc around the edges, placing 2 sc at each point tip.
  7. Before closing, add a tiny amount of stuffing. FO.

Embroider a smaller star shape in the center using brown or darker gold yarn. Sew the star to the top of the tree with several firm stitches through the lower two points.

Tree Ornaments

Use a mix of red, gold, white, blue, and sage ornaments. Make enough pieces so the tree looks richly decorated but not crowded. Sew ornaments mostly to branch ruffles so they sit on the surface.

Round Baubles

  • Sew the fox on the right side of the tree, standing near the presents and mini snowy trees.
  • Sew the owl behind the squirrel on the right, close to the tree but still visible.
  • Sew the bunny on the front left, near the opening of the fence and path.
  • Sew the squirrel on the front right, facing the campfire and path.
  • Sew the tiny mouse at the front of the gift pile.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Center the Christmas tree on the base and pin it in place. Sew around the bottom edge twice with dark green yarn.
  2. Arrange the gifts in a curved pile at the front of the tree. Sew the largest gifts first, then add small gifts in front.
  3. Sew the stepping stones from the front edge toward the gifts, keeping the path centered.
  4. Attach fence posts and rails around the front half of the base. Leave the path opening clear.
  5. Add animals after the fence is secure. Check every face direction before sewing.
  6. Sew mushrooms, berries, greenery, mini trees, and the campfire last.
  7. Embroider all faces with small neat stitches. Use black for eyes and noses, brown for smiles, pink for bunny and mouse noses, and cream for highlights.

For the reindeer, place eyes on the head front between Rounds 5 and 6. For the fox, position eyes above the cream face patch. For the owl, make sure the two eye circles touch. For the squirrel and bunny, keep features small and centered.

Care Notes

Spot clean only. Use a slightly damp cloth and gently press the stained area. Do not soak the diorama, especially if you added cardboard, plastic canvas, wire, or battery lights. Let the piece air dry completely before storing.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Main tree stands straight and is firmly attached.
  • Gold star topper is centered and secure.
  • Garland spirals evenly around the tree.
  • All ornaments are sewn to branch ruffles, not loosely hanging.
  • Animals face toward the center scene.
  • Fence has an open front path.
  • Campfire, mushrooms, gifts, and stones are firmly stitched down.
  • Loose yarn ends are woven in and hidden.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished diorama in a dry box with tissue paper around the star, antlers, and ornaments. Keep it away from direct sunlight to prevent color fading. If you use lights, remove the battery pack before long-term storage.

To refresh the shape, gently lift the tree branches with your fingers and smooth the animals back into place. Avoid pulling on the garland, bells, candy canes, or stockings. These small details create the charm of the finished woodland Christmas scene.
