Crochet Tutorial: Moon-root Lantern Hollow Owl Village Treehouse – Free Crochet Pattern.

This Moon-root Lantern Hollow Owl Village Treehouse is a detailed crochet woodland diorama with a round mossy base, twisting brown roots, a hollow tree trunk, tiny owl homes, glowing moon and star lanterns, a rope hammock, a market stall, baskets, books, flowers, mushrooms, stepping stones, and cozy owl villagers. The finished piece is designed as a decorative crochet display full of tiny cottage-garden details.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Finished base: about 17 in / 43 cm across.
  • Tree height: about 14.5 in / 37 cm from base to tallest branch.
  • Main hollow house: about 4.5 in / 11.5 cm wide and 4 in / 10 cm tall.
  • Side huts: about 3.5 in / 9 cm wide and 4 in / 10 cm tall.
  • Owls: about 1.5-2 in / 4-5 cm tall.

Skill Level

Intermediate to advanced. This project uses amigurumi shaping, surface crochet, small appliques, wire-supported branches, layered roofs, embroidery, and detailed assembly. A patient beginner can make it by working one section at a time.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn: grass green, moss green, dark moss, bark brown, dark brown, tan, beige, cream, gray, stone gray, warm yellow, gold, white, black, red, berry purple, blueberry navy, mushroom orange, book red, book green, book blue.
  • Light DK yarn or embroidery floss: white, black, gold, dark brown, rose pink, leaf green.
  • 3.25 mm crochet hook for main pieces.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for small flowers, berries, eyes, and lantern cords.

Abbreviations in US Terms

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • FO: fasten off
  • st/sts: stitch/stitches
  • R: round or row

Gauge

Gauge is not strict, but the fabric must be firm. With worsted yarn and a 3.25 mm hook, 6 sc and 7 rounds should measure about 1 in / 2.5 cm. Use a smaller hook if stuffing shows through.

Important Construction Notes

Most pieces are worked in continuous rounds unless stated otherwise. Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round. Stuff pieces firmly but do not overstuff flat houses or the base.

The tree in the picture leans and curves naturally. To recreate that shape, crochet covers are made as tubes and slipped over wrapped wire armatures. Bend the armature gradually before final sewing.

This is a decorative crochet pattern. If you use wire, buttons, tiny lanterns, or LEDs, keep the finished village away from babies, pets, and rough play.

Round Mossy Base

Use grass green yarn and a 3.25 mm hook. Work in joined rounds if you prefer a flat circle, or continuous rounds if your tension is even. Place the plastic canvas circle inside before closing.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the main trunk to the back center of the base. The trunk bottom should sit about 3 in / 7.5 cm from the back edge.
  2. Sew the three large roots outward. One root sweeps left over the left hut, one curves across the front, and one forms the large right arch.
  3. Attach upper branches to the trunk. Bend them before sewing so they spread like the image.
  4. Sew moss strips over root tops, branch joints, and trunk curves.
  5. Sew the central hollow house under the main arch, slightly right of center.
  6. Sew the left acorn hut under the left root and the right hut near the right edge.
  7. Attach the upper platform to the left side of the trunk. Add posts and desk.
  8. Hang the nest hollow under the middle branch.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check every owl face before final sewing. The eyes should sit close together, with the beak centered just below them. Add tiny white highlights to the eyes. For the study owl, sew the black glasses over both cream face discs.

Use long pins to test the placement of every hut, branch, and accessory. The strongest visual line should be the tree curve sweeping from the left front root up through the trunk and across the upper right branch.

After all pieces are attached, add final moss stitches. Work short green lines over any visible seams at the base of the tree, roof edges, and hut bottoms.

Care Notes

  • Display indoors only.
  • Keep away from moisture, direct strong sunlight, and rough handling.
  • Do not machine wash because of the wire, layered roofs, and small sewn details.
  • If LED lights are added, remove batteries when not in use.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Round base is flat and firm.
  • Main trunk leans naturally and is sewn securely.
  • All roots touch the base and look planted into the moss.
  • Left and right huts sit under the roots.
  • Upper platform holds the study owl, desk, books, and telescope.
  • Hammock hangs inside the right branch curve with two owls inside.
  • Stars and moons are spaced across the upper branches.
  • Market stall includes striped awning, baskets, berries, and acorns.
  • Stone path curves from the front edge toward the left hut.
  • Sign reads Moon-root Lantern Hollow.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Dust the village with a soft makeup brush or clean paintbrush. Brush from the top branches downward so dust does not settle again on finished areas.

For small marks, dab gently with a slightly damp white cloth. Do not rub the stitches. Let the piece air dry completely before returning it to a shelf or display table.

To store the treehouse, place tissue paper around the branches and lanterns. Keep the village upright inside a sturdy box so the curved branches and market stall do not flatten.
