Create a magical celestial woodland treehouse diorama with three sturdy crochet tree trunks, leafy canopies, rope bridges, ladders, owl astronomers, a crescent-moon observatory pod, telescopes, glowing-style hanging stars, a tea platform, lantern, mushrooms, flowers, books, stepping stones, and a labeled wooden sign. This pattern uses US crochet terms and builds the scene in separate pieces before assembling everything into one detailed display.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Finished Size
- Base: about 17 in wide x 12 in deep.
- Total height: about 16 in from base to tallest leafy canopy.
- Observatory pod: about 5 in tall x 4 in wide.
- Owls: seated owls about 2 in tall; hanging pod owl about 3 in tall including pod.
Skill Level
Intermediate. The stitches are beginner-friendly, but the project has many small parts, shaping details, firm stuffing, and careful assembly. Take your time with placement so the final diorama looks balanced like the reference image.
Materials
- Worsted weight yarn: grass green, dark green, forest green, bark brown, dark brown, tan, beige, golden yellow, cream, gray, black, white, soft peach, muted blue, red, and small amounts of flower colors.
- 3.5 mm crochet hook for most pieces.
- 3.0 mm crochet hook for small stars, eyes, flowers, books, and ropes.
- Polyester fiberfill.
- Yarn needle and stitch markers.
- Cardboard, plastic canvas, or thin craft foam for hidden support in platforms, base, and observatory pod.
- Optional battery micro fairy lights for display only. Do not sew permanent batteries inside the toy.
- Brown pipe cleaners or floral wire for internal tree support, fully covered and secured.
- Small wooden dowels may be used inside tall tree trunks for a firmer display piece.
Abbreviations
- MR: magic ring
- ch: chain
- sl st: slip stitch
- sc: single crochet
- hdc: half double crochet
- dc: double crochet
- tr: treble crochet
- inc: 2 sc in same stitch
- dec: invisible single crochet decrease
- BLO: back loop only
- FLO: front loop only
- st/sts: stitch/stitches
- FO: fasten off
- R: round or row
Gauge
With worsted weight yarn and a 3.5 mm hook, 6 sc and 6 rounds should measure about 1 in. Gauge is not strict, but firm stitches are important because the trees and platforms must hold their shape.
Important Construction Notes
- Work most amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds unless the pattern says to join.
- Stuff trunks very firmly. A soft trunk will lean after the bridges and pod are attached.
- Cut plastic canvas circles or ovals slightly smaller than the crochet platforms and insert them before closing.
- Use long yarn tails for sewing whenever possible.
- The treehouse is a display piece, not a baby toy, especially if lights, wire, dowels, or beads are used.
Part 1: Large Green Woodland Base
The base is an irregular rounded mat like a soft grassy island. It has a wider right side under the observatory tree, a rounded left area under the small tree, and a front dip where the gray stepping-stone path begins.
Oval Base Top
Use grass green yarn and a 3.5 mm hook.
- Ch 41.
- R1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 38, 3 sc in last ch. Work along the other side of the chain: sc 38, 2 sc in first ch. Do not join. 82 sts.

Base Bottom
Make a second oval exactly the same through R10 only. Do not work BLO on the bottom piece. Cut an oval insert from cardboard or plastic canvas, about 1/4 in smaller than the crochet base.
Join the Base
- Place wrong sides together with the insert between them.
- Using grass green yarn, sc through both layers around the edge.
- When you reach the front dip, work sl st through both layers for 8 sts so the curve stays flatter.

Grass Texture on Base
- Using forest green, join yarn randomly on the top surface.
- Make 35 small grass tufts: ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch, sl st 3, sl st into base.
- Make 15 taller tufts: ch 7, sl st in 2nd ch, sl st 5, sl st into base.
- Place more tufts near tree roots, mushrooms, sign, and lantern.
Part 2: Main Tree Trunks and Roots

Part 15: Assembly Order

- Sew the central trunk slightly left of center. Keep it vertical and very firm.
- Sew the left trunk to the left side of the base, about 2 in from the left edge.
- Sew roots around each trunk, making sure they lie flat on the grass base.
- Sew the right large platform to the top of the right trunk. The platform should sit level.
- Sew the left platform around the left trunk at about 8 in high.
- Sew the central tea platform to the central trunk at about 5 in high.
- Sew the leafy canopies to the tops of the left and central trunks.
- Sew the observatory pod to the right platform, slightly toward the back right.
- Attach the dark arched window and telescopes to the observatory.
- Sew the large golden crescent moon to the front of the pod.
- Attach rope rail posts and rope chains around the platforms.
- Attach the main bridge between the left and right platforms.
- Attach the short bridge near the central tea platform.
- Sew ladders in place, one at the left platform and one near the central trunk.
- Place one owl beside the telescope, one owl at the tea table, and one owl inside the hanging pod.
- Hang the moon and star garlands between canopies and under platforms.
- Sew books, star chart, sign, stones, lantern, mushrooms, flowers, grass tufts, and glowing orbs to the base.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check every owl face before final sewing. The eyes should sit close together, with the black pupils centered and the small golden beak pointing down between them. Add two tiny cream stitches on each owl belly for a soft feathered look.
For the observatory owl, sew the body to the platform so it faces slightly forward. For the tea owl, angle it toward the cups. For the pod owl, place the face inside the golden hanging pod so it peeks outward.
Use dark brown yarn to add final bark lines to all trunks after assembly. Add a few short horizontal stitches where platforms meet the trunks to make the treehouse look tied together with woodland rope.
Care Notes
- Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if cardboard, plastic canvas, wire, dowels, or lights are inside.
- Keep battery lights removable and never leave them on unattended.
- Let the diorama air dry completely before displaying again.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- Base: green oval mat is firm and flat.
- Trees: three trunks stand upright with visible roots.
- Canopies: leaf scales overlap downward in layers.
- Observatory: beige pod has black arched window, telescopes, and large golden crescent moon.
- Bridges: rope bridges sag gently but are secure.
- Owls: all three owls have round eyes, beaks, wings, and correct placement.
- Details: sign, stones, lantern, books, flowers, mushrooms, stars, moons, and garlands are attached.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Dust the treehouse gently with a soft brush, working from the top canopies down to the base. Avoid pulling the garlands, ladders, or bridge ropes while cleaning.
Store the diorama in a box tall enough that the canopies and observatory do not bend. Place soft tissue around the hanging pod and telescopes to prevent pressure marks.
If any small charm loosens over time, reattach it with matching yarn and a yarn needle. Do not use hot glue near optional light strands, delicate stitches, or stuffed pieces.
