This festive woodland train playset features a red, green, cream, and gold steam locomotive traveling across a snowy holiday runner. The train includes a conductor bear, a Christmas fox, a wide-eyed owl, a squirrel, colorful gift parcels, four open wagons, snow-covered shrubs, candy canes, evergreen trees, decorated streetlamps, railway tracks, and a softly puffing chimney.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Pattern Overview
This pattern is worked mainly in continuous rounds and flat rows. The train bodies are reinforced with plastic canvas so the locomotive and wagons retain the squared shape shown in the image. The woodland characters are lightly stuffed and positioned upright inside the train.
The finished playset is designed as a decorative tabletop display. Small pieces, wire, safety eyes, and internal supports may present a hazard to young children. Replace safety eyes with embroidery and omit wire when making the set for children.

Gauge and Construction Notes
Using the 3.5 mm hook, 18 sc stitches and 20 sc rows should measure approximately 4 inches. Using the 4.0 mm hook, 16 hdc stitches and 12 hdc rows should measure approximately 4 inches. Exact gauge is less important than creating firm fabric without visible stuffing.
- Work continuous rounds unless the instructions say to join.
- Place a marker in the first stitch of every continuous round.
- Use a smaller hook when gaps appear between stitches.
- Stuff the animals firmly but keep the wagon walls flat.
- Cut plastic canvas approximately 1/8 inch smaller than each reinforced panel.
- Finish all color changes on the final yarn-over of the previous stitch.

- Add one cream and red gift beside the squirrel.
Sew each character to the wagon floor through the lower body. Add hidden support stitches from the character’s back to the nearest wagon wall. The figures should remain upright when the train is moved.
Final Train Placement
Center the locomotive on the left section of the rails, leaving approximately 4 inches of visible track in front of the cowcatcher. Arrange all four wagons behind the engine with consistent spacing between the couplings.
Use several removable stitches beneath each chassis when the playset will be transported. For a permanent display, sew the train directly through the runner and into the reinforced lower panels without passing through the wheels.

- Add one tiny white highlight beside each safety eye with embroidery thread.
- Shape each muzzle with small hidden stitches before embroidering the nose.

- Keep the train walls square while completing the final seams.
- Trim or weave in every visible yarn tail.
Care Notes
Spot-clean the completed playset with cool water and a mild detergent. Avoid soaking pieces containing plastic canvas, foam, wire, or chenille stems. Press the damp area gently with a clean towel and allow the set to dry naturally on a flat surface.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The red border lies flat without curling.
- Both rails are straight and evenly spaced.
- All train wheels rest at the same height.
- The boiler and cab are centered on the chassis.
- Each wagon is reinforced and square.
- The conductor bear, fox, owl, and squirrel are secure.
- All four wagons are connected in the correct order.
- The streetlamps stand upright.
- The smoke curves gently toward the back.
- All small decorations are firmly attached.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Remove loose surface dust with a soft brush or a hair dryer set to cool and low power. Support tall pieces with one hand while cleaning. Never pull the train by the smoke, chimney, lamps, characters, or couplings.
Store the playset flat in a dry container lined with acid-free tissue. Keep heavy objects away from the cab roof, wagon walls, trees, and lanterns. Reshape lightly stuffed pieces by hand before displaying the train again.
Avoid prolonged direct sunlight because strong light can fade the red, green, blue, and golden yarn. Keep the display away from candles, heaters, fireplaces, moisture, and areas where pets may reach the small accessories.
