This cheerful garden chipmunk girl wears a sleeveless sky-blue dress with alternating cream stripes, a delicate lace hem, yellow flower sandals, and several white daisies. Her accessories include a yellow crossbody satchel, a wide-brimmed straw hat with a green band, and two miniature acorns with a crocheted leaf.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size and Pattern Information

The finished chipmunk measures approximately 12 to 13 inches, or 30 to 33 centimeters, from the top of the ears to the bottom of the feet. The exact measurement may vary depending on yarn weight, hook size, stuffing density, and individual crochet tension.

  • Skill level: Advanced beginner to intermediate
  • Crochet terminology: US English
  • Construction: Individual amigurumi pieces sewn together
  • Main technique: Continuous spiral rounds
  • Recommended hook: 2.75 mm crochet hook
  • Approximate hat diameter: 6 to 6.5 inches
  • Approximate satchel size: 2.75 inches wide

Gauge and Tension

Exact gauge is less important than producing a firm fabric without visible stuffing. A useful reference is approximately 6 single crochet stitches and 6 rounds per inch when working with a 2.75 mm hook and DK-weight cotton yarn.

If gaps appear between stitches, change to a smaller hook. Keep the tension consistent throughout the head and body so the dress, hat, sandals, and facial pieces fit correctly.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work the amigurumi pieces in continuous spiral rounds unless instructed otherwise.
  • Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round.
  • Use invisible decreases wherever possible.
  • Stuff the head firmly, especially around the cheeks and eye area.
  • Stuff the arms and tail lightly so they remain flexible.
  • Do not overstuff the feet because the sandals must fit over them.
  • Fasten off with a long yarn tail whenever a piece must be sewn in place.

Chipmunk Head

Begin at the top of the head with chestnut brown yarn. The upper brown rounds create the chipmunk’s dark crown, while the cream lower rounds form the pale cheeks and lower face.

Begin stuffing the head. Add small portions of fiberfill at a time. Push the filling firmly into the upper sides, lower cheeks, and back of the head while keeping the front surface smooth.

  1. Rnd 23: Repeat 2 sc, dec around. 18 sts.

Finish stuffing until the head is firm and rounded. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Do not close the opening completely because the 18-stitch neck opening will be sewn directly to the body.

White Eye Patches

Make two with white yarn. Each eye patch is worked as a small oval. The patches should sit partly on the brown crown and partly beside the raised cream muzzle.

  1. Foundation: Ch 7.
  2. Rnd 1: Beginning in the second ch from the hook, work 5 sc, 3 sc in the last ch, 4 sc along the opposite side, and 2 sc in the first ch. 14 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Inc, 4 sc, inc in each of the next 3 sts, 4 sc, inc in each of the last 2 sts. 20 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: Work 1 sc, inc, 4 sc, repeat 1 sc, inc three times, 4 sc, then repeat 1 sc, inc twice. 26 sts.

Fasten off with a long tail. Gently stretch each patch into a teardrop-shaped oval. The narrower end should point slightly inward toward the nose.

Insert one safety eye through each patch between Rnds 1 and 2. Position the eye slightly below the center of the patch rather than directly in the middle.

Pin the patches onto the head with their inner edges approximately four stitches apart. The eyes should sit near the transition between brown Rnd 12 and cream Rnd 13.

Push the safety-eye posts through the head, check that both eyes are level, and secure the washers inside. Sew around each patch with small white stitches, keeping the edges flat.

Raised Cream Muzzle

Use warm cream yarn. This broad oval forms the projecting lower muzzle and rounded chipmunk cheeks shown beneath the eyes.

  1. Foundation: Ch 11.
  2. Rnd 1: Beginning in the second ch from the hook, work 9 sc, 3 sc in the last ch, 8 sc along the opposite side, and 2 sc in the first ch. 22 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Inc, 8 sc, inc in each of the next 3 sts, 8 sc, inc in each of the last 2 sts. 28 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: Work 1 sc, inc, 8 sc, repeat 1 sc, inc three times, 8 sc, then repeat 1 sc, inc twice. 34 sts.
  5. Rnd 4: Sc in each st around. 34 sts.

Fasten off with a long tail. Pin the muzzle horizontally across the cream lower face. Its upper edge should sit immediately beneath the eyes, and its lower edge should end around Rnd 20 of the head.

Sew approximately three-quarters of the muzzle edge to the head. Insert a thin, even layer of stuffing to create rounded cheeks without making the muzzle look sharply protruding. Complete the seam and shape both sides evenly.

Brown Nose

Use dark chocolate brown yarn. Work in turned rows.

  1. Row 1: Ch 2. Work 2 sc in the second ch from the hook. 2 sts.
  2. Row 2: Ch 1 and turn. Inc in each st. 4 sts.
  3. Row 3: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each st. 4 sts.

Fasten off with a long tail. Place the four-stitch edge horizontally at the upper center of the muzzle, with the narrow point facing downward. Sew securely around the triangle.

Cheek Markings and Mouth

Thread a yarn needle with chestnut brown yarn. On each side of the face, make a narrow marking beneath the eye patch. Each marking should follow the transition line between the brown upper head and the cream lower head.

  • Make three horizontal surface stitches on the left side.
  • Make three matching horizontal surface stitches on the right side.
  • Each surface stitch should span approximately two crochet stitches.
  • Keep the markings close to the outer upper edge of the muzzle.

Using dark brown embroidery thread, bring the needle down from the bottom point of the nose. Make one vertical stitch approximately one-half inch long.

Create the smiling mouth with two curved sections. The left curve should travel down and outward before returning to the center. Repeat symmetrically on the right side. Secure all thread ends inside the head.

Ears

Make two outer ears with chestnut brown yarn.

  1. Rnd 1: Work 6 sc into an MR. 6 sts.
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 3: Repeat 1 sc, inc around. 18 sts.
  4. Rnd 4: Sc in each st around. 18 sts.

Fasten off with a long tail. Do not stuff. Fold each circle in half to form a rounded ear and sew the open edges together through both layers.

Pin the ears between head Rnds 4 and 8. Place them approximately 18 stitches apart across the crown. Angle both ears slightly outward rather than positioning them completely upright.

Sew the folded lower edge of each ear firmly to the head. The left ear will later be partially covered by the daisy hair decoration.

  3. Rnd 3: Repeat 1 sc, inc around. 18 sts.
  4. Rnd 4: Repeat 2 sc, inc around. 24 sts.
  5. Rnd 5: Repeat 3 sc, inc around. 30 sts.
  6. Rnd 6: Repeat 4 sc, inc around. 36 sts.
  7. Rnds 7-13: Sc in each st around. 36 sts.
  8. Rnd 14: Repeat 4 sc, dec around. 30 sts.

  10. Rnd 19: Repeat 3 sc, dec around. 24 sts.
  11. Rnds 20-21: Sc in each st around. 24 sts.
  12. Rnd 22: Repeat 2 sc, dec around. 18 sts.
  13. Rnd 23: Sc in each st around. 18 sts.

Stuff the body firmly at the lower center and more lightly around the upper chest. Keep the neck opening round. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for attaching the head.

  2. Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. Rnds 3-5: Sc in each st around. 12 sts.
  4. Rnd 6: Repeat 4 sc, dec twice. 10 sts.
  5. Rnds 7-16: Sc in each st around. 10 sts.

Stuff the hand firmly and the arm lightly. Leave the upper four rounds nearly unstuffed. Flatten the opening and work 5 sc through both layers to close it.

Fasten off with a long tail. Do not attach the arms until the dress has been placed on the body.

Legs and Feet

Make two with chestnut brown yarn. Begin at the rounded toe and continue upward to the leg.

  5. Rnd 8: Repeat 1 sc, dec around. 12 sts.
  6. Rnds 9-16: Sc in each st around. 12 sts.

Stuff the foot firmly enough to keep its rounded shape. Stuff the leg evenly but leave the final two rounds slightly softer for easier attachment.

Flatten the opening and work 6 sc through both layers. Fasten off with a long tail.

Tail

Use chestnut brown yarn. The tail is long, softly stuffed, and slightly curved. It will remain partly visible behind the left arm and dress.

  1. Rnd 1: Work 6 sc into an MR. 6 sts.
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 3: Repeat 1 sc, inc around. 18 sts.

  7. Rnd 18: Repeat 3 sc, dec three times. 12 sts.
  8. Rnds 19-24: Sc in each st around. 12 sts.

Stuff lightly while working. Flatten the final opening and work 6 sc through both layers. Fasten off with a long tail.

To create the gentle curve, thread chestnut yarn through the underside of the tail from the base toward the tip. Pull very lightly, return the yarn to the base, and knot securely without sharply folding the tail.

Blue Dress Bodice

The dress is worked from the neckline downward. Use sky-blue yarn. Join each round with a slip stitch and chain one before beginning the next round. The beginning chain does not count as a stitch.

  1. Foundation: Ch 24 without twisting. Join with a sl st to form a ring.

Fasten off with a long tail. Sew the two acorn stems near the lower end of the leaf. Keep the acorns side by side with one hanging slightly lower than the other.

Placing the Dress on the Body

Slide the dress over the body from the neck opening. Pull it downward until the neckline rests between body Rnds 20 and 22.

Align the armholes with the sides of the body. The beginning seam of the joined dress rounds should face the back.

Make six small hidden stitches around the neckline to secure the dress. Add two stitches beneath each armhole and four stitches around the waistline. Do not sew through the flared skirt.

Attaching the Legs

Pin the legs beneath the lower body between body Rnds 3 and 7. Leave approximately six body stitches between the inner edges of the legs.

Angle the feet slightly outward. Sew through the flattened upper edge of each leg and the body several times. Reinforce the front and back of each attachment without pulling the legs too close together.

Attaching the Tail

Position the tail on the left back side of the body between body Rnds 8 and 13. The tail should curve downward and remain visible beside the left side of the dress.

Sew the flattened base firmly to the body. Add one hidden anchoring stitch approximately halfway down the tail to keep it close to the body while preserving the rounded curve.

Attaching the Arms

Place the left arm between body Rnds 18 and 21. Angle it downward beside the skirt. The hand should rest near the upper side of the visible tail.

Place the right arm at the same height, but angle it outward and slightly downward. The right hand should extend away from the body as shown in the finished figure.

Sew each arm through the five-stitch flattened edge. Reinforce the seam at both corners so the arms do not rotate.

Attaching the Head

Center the 18-stitch opening of the head over the 18-stitch neck opening of the body. The face must align with the center front of the dress.

Pin the head in four places. Check the position from the front, side, and back. The large head should tilt only very slightly toward the chipmunk’s left side.

Sew one head stitch to one body stitch around the full opening. After completing the first round of sewing, repeat the seam once more for additional support.

Positioning the Satchel

Place the strap over the chipmunk’s left shoulder and across the front of the dress. Position the satchel at the right hip over the upper skirt.

Secure the strap at the shoulder with two small yellow stitches. Add two hidden stitches behind the satchel to keep it resting flat against the dress.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check that the eyes are level, the nose is centered, and the two embroidered smile curves are symmetrical. Add one tiny dark brown stitch at each mouth corner if the curves need stronger definition.

Arrange the ear daisy so it partly overlaps the left ear. Confirm that the bodice flowers, skirt flower, satchel flower, sandal flowers, and hat flower face forward without folded petals.

Shape the cheeks with your fingers. Gently press the upper center of the muzzle beneath the nose while pushing the lower sides outward to create the chipmunk’s rounded smiling expression.

Place the hat beside the finished chipmunk for the photographed arrangement, or place it lightly over the ears. Do not permanently sew the hat to the head if you want it to remain removable.

Arrange the two acorns and green leaf beside the chipmunk. The acorns may remain separate decorative accessories or be lightly attached to the left hand with one removable yarn tie.

Care Notes

  • Keep the finished chipmunk away from open flames and excessive heat.
  • Avoid pulling the satchel strap, sandal straps, flowers, or hat band.
  • Store the removable hat flat to prevent the brim from curling.
  • Reshape the head, dress, and tail gently after handling.
  • Check sewn components regularly if the item is used as a toy.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Both eyes are level and securely attached.
  • The muzzle is centered and evenly stuffed.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For light dust, use a clean, soft brush or a low-powered handheld vacuum covered with a thin cloth. Work gently around the embroidered face, flower petals, lace edging, and removable accessories.

For spot cleaning, dampen a white cloth with cool water and a very small amount of mild soap. Blot the affected area without rubbing. Remove the soap with a second damp cloth.

If full washing is necessary, place the chipmunk inside a mesh laundry bag and wash by hand in cool water. Do not use bleach, strong detergent, fabric softener, or hot water.

Press the item carefully between clean towels to remove excess water. Do not twist or wring the head, body, dress, or accessories.

Allow every piece to air-dry completely on a flat towel. Turn the chipmunk occasionally so moisture does not remain inside the stuffing. Reshape the head, feet, tail, skirt, and hat brim while damp.

Store the finished project in a clean, dry location away from direct sunlight. Long exposure to sunlight may fade the blue dress, yellow accessories, brown body, and green decorative details.
