Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms. The fox is knitted mostly in the round using small double-pointed needles or magic loop. The dress, bag, basket, hat, flowers, and accessories are knitted separately and sewn on after stuffing.

The finished fox sits about 8.5 inches tall from the bottom of the sandals to the top of the ears when made with DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles. Use firm tension so the stuffing does not show through the knitted fabric.

  • Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Main construction: Knitted amigurumi, worked in the round.
  • Finished height: About 8.5 inches tall.
  • Main look: Rust fox face, cream lower face, green floral dress, berry details, strawberry bag, basket, hat, and watering can.
  • Needle size: US 2 or 2.75 mm needles for the doll and accessories.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in rusty orange for the fox head, outer ears, upper arms, and tail.
  • DK weight yarn in warm cream for muzzle, cheeks, inner ears, dress hem panel, bag, hat stripes, sandal trim, and strap.
  • DK weight yarn in dark brown for lower arms, legs, feet, ear tips, and nose embroidery.
  • DK weight yarn in deep forest green for the dress bodice, skirt, collar, hat, and headband.
  • Small amounts of burgundy, berry pink, red, sage green, yellow, white, tan, gray, and blue yarn for flowers, berries, strawberry, basket contents, and watering can.
  • US 2 or 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or long circular needle for magic loop.
  • US 1 or 2.25 mm needles for tiny flowers and bag details if you want tighter pieces.
  • Two 8 mm black safety eyes or black beads.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Scrap yarn for holding stitches.
  • Optional: one tiny tan button for the strawberry bag flap.

Gauge

Gauge is not critical, but tight knitting is important. With DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles, aim for about 7 stitches and 10 rows per inch in stockinette stitch. If your fabric looks loose, go down one needle size.

Important Notes Before Starting

  • Stuff each body part firmly, but do not overstuff the face because the fox needs a soft rounded cheek shape.
  • Use mattress stitch or ladder stitch for neat seams.
  • When changing colors on the head and dress, twist yarns at the back of the work to avoid gaps.
  • The fox in the image has a large head, small sitting body, long narrow legs, and delicate accessories. Keep the limbs slimmer than the head.
  • The face should be slightly wider across the cheeks than across the forehead.

Head

The head is worked from the top down in rusty orange, with a cream lower face section added by color change. Keep the front color changes centered. The cream area forms a soft rounded mask across the lower face, cheeks, and muzzle.

  3. BO.

Curve the handle from the upper side of the can to the lower side. Sew both ends securely.

Optional Tiny Flowers for Sandals and Scene

The fox has tiny pink flower accents near the sandals, and the garden scene benefits from a few extra blossoms. These pieces are very small, so use thin yarn if available.

  1. With pink yarn, CO 4 sts.
  2. Row 1: kfb in each st. 8 sts.
  3. BO.
  4. Curl into a tiny blossom and stitch the base closed.
  5. Add one yellow stitch in the center.

Make 2 flowers for the sandals and 3 extra flowers for the headband or basket area.

Assembly Order

  1. Finish and stuff the head, body, arms, legs, feet, and tail first.
  2. Sew the feet to the lower ends of the legs. The toes should face forward.
  3. Sew the legs to the lower front of the body, spaced about 8 stitches apart.
  4. Sew the tail to the back of the body before adding the dress.
  5. Slide the green dress over the body from the top. Adjust the skirt so the floral cream band faces front.
  6. Sew the upper edge of the dress to the body with hidden stitches around the collar area.
  7. Sew the arms to the sides, then arrange the short green sleeves over the shoulder area.
  8. Sew the head to the body. Use many small stitches around the neck so the large head is stable.
  9. Sew the ears high on the head, angled outward and slightly forward.
  10. Add the muzzle, nose, mouth, and any extra cheek shaping.
  11. Sew the headband and flowers across the crown.
  12. Place the strawberry bag strap diagonally across the body and secure it with hidden stitches at the shoulder and side.
  13. Arrange the basket, hat, and watering can as separate props or stitch them lightly to a display base.

Facial Details

The expression should be gentle, sweet, and slightly curious. Place the eyes evenly and keep the muzzle low enough to create the rounded fox cheek shape. The nose should be small, dark, and centered.

  • Eyes sit between Rnds 18 and 19 of the head.
  • Eyes are about 10 stitches apart.
  • Muzzle sits below the eyes, centered across the cream face area.
  • Nose is embroidered at the upper center of the muzzle.
  • Mouth is made with one vertical stitch and two soft curved stitches.
  • Optional eyelashes can be added with two tiny black stitches at the outer side of each eye.

Color Placement Guide

Use rusty orange on the upper fox face, head, upper arms, and outer ears. Use cream across the lower face, muzzle, inner ears, dress floral band, bag, strap, hat stripes, and sandal trim. Use dark brown for paws, legs, feet, ear tips, and nose details.

The dress should be deep forest green with a cream garden band near the lower skirt. The flowers on the skirt should look like little burgundy berries with sage green leaves. Keep the floral details slightly uneven for a handmade garden look.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check that the head is straight, the ears are balanced, and the bag rests naturally across the front of the dress. Add final embroidery only after the doll is fully assembled, because small changes in head angle can affect the expression.

  • Tighten the eye area slightly by pulling a strand from one eye position through the back of the head and back again.
  • Add a small cream stitch highlight at each cheek if desired.
  • Use dark brown yarn to deepen the nose until it looks rounded and glossy.
  • Secure the strawberry bag at the shoulder so it does not slide.
  • Shape the skirt outward with your fingers so the hem flares like the image.

Care Notes

This knitted fox is best used as a decorative handmade toy. If safety eyes, buttons, or tiny berries are used, keep the item away from children under three years old. For a child-safe version, embroider the eyes and replace the button with a stitched circle.

  • Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if the accessories are sewn on.
  • Do not wring the doll, because the head and skirt may lose shape.
  • Let the fox air dry flat on a towel.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is large, round, and firmly attached.
  • The cream face section is centered under both eyes.
  • The ears are tall, pointed, and angled outward.
  • The green dress has a ribbed collar, short sleeves, flared skirt, cream floral band, and textured hem.
  • The strawberry bag crosses from shoulder to opposite hip.
  • The garden basket includes colorful berries.
  • The striped hat and watering can are finished as matching garden props.
  • The sandals have cream edging and tiny flower accents.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, store the fox upright or lying flat in a clean dry place. Avoid direct sunlight for long periods, because the rusty orange and green yarns may fade. Keep the tiny flowers and berry details from catching on rough surfaces.

For dust removal, use a soft dry brush and move gently in the direction of the stitches. If the bag or basket becomes misshapen, pinch it lightly back into shape with your fingers. Avoid heavy moisture around the embroidered face.

If a stitched accessory loosens, use matching yarn and a tapestry needle to secure it again through the nearest hidden seam. Small repairs are easiest when made early, before the accessory pulls away from the knitted fabric.
