Knitting Tutorial: Garden Tabby Kitten in Green Overalls with Mushroom Satchel and Straw Hat – Free Knitting Pattern.

This knitted garden tabby kitten has a round gray-and-white striped head, bright blue eyes, a tiny pink nose, green garden overalls with embroidered leaves, a brown mushroom satchel, flower sandals, and a small leaf hair clip. The scene also includes a removable straw hat with a tiny bee, a knitted succulent pot, and a small watering can to match the cozy garden-table look.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written for knitters who want a detailed, image-matching soft toy with clear stitch counts and careful shaping. The kitten is worked mainly in the round using small needles, then finished with embroidered tabby stripes, facial details, clothing, and miniature accessories.

The finished kitten is designed to sit upright with slightly dangling legs, rounded paws, soft arms at the sides, and a large expressive head. The overalls are knitted separately so the chest bib, straps, buttons, and cuffed legs look like the green outfit in the image.

  • Finished kitten height: about 8.5 inches from bottom of sandal to top of head, not including the leaf clip.
  • Finished sitting height: about 7.25 inches.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Main construction: knitted in the round, lightly stuffed, then seamed and embroidered.
  • Needle style: double-pointed needles or magic loop circular needles.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: sport weight or light DK yarn works best for a firm toy fabric.
  • Main gray: soft medium gray for head, ears, arms, and tabby areas.
  • White: for muzzle, cheeks, lower face, neck, paws, and lower legs.
  • Dark charcoal: for tabby stripes and toe lines.
  • Garden green: for overalls and leaf clip.
  • Light green: for embroidered plant stems and leaves.
  • Brown: for satchel, straps, sandal soles, and pot soil.
  • Tan straw color: for straw hat and sandal edges.
  • Terracotta peach: for succulent pot.
  • Mint green: for succulent leaves.
  • Cream: for watering can.
  • Red and white: for mushroom applique on the satchel.
  • Pink: for nose, mouth, and tiny sandal flowers.
  • Yellow and black: for the tiny bee on the straw hat.
  • Safety eyes: 14 mm blue eyes, or black safety eyes with blue felt circles behind them.
  • Buttons: two tiny tan buttons, about 6 mm wide, for the overall straps.
  • Stuffing: polyester fiberfill.
  • Needles: US 2, 2.75 mm, for the toy body and accessories.
  • Smaller needles: US 1, 2.25 mm, optional for straps and tiny details.
  • Other tools: tapestry needle, stitch markers, removable markers, sewing pins, scissors, row counter, and black embroidery floss.

Gauge

Gauge is important because the kitten needs a tight knitted fabric that holds stuffing without gaps. Knit a small stockinette swatch in the round if possible.

  • Gauge in stockinette: 7 stitches and 10 rounds = 1 inch after light blocking.
  • Toy fabric goal: firm, dense, and slightly plush.
  • Adjustment: if stuffing shows through, use smaller needles. If the fabric feels stiff and difficult to shape, use needles one size larger.

Abbreviations

  • BO: bind off.
  • CO: cast on.
  • K: knit.
  • P: purl.
  • St or sts: stitch or stitches.
  • Rnd: round.
  • RS: right side.
  • WS: wrong side.
  • K2tog: knit 2 stitches together.
  • SSK: slip, slip, knit slipped stitches together.
  • M1L: make 1 left-leaning stitch.
  • M1R: make 1 right-leaning stitch.
  • Inc: increase by knitting into the front and back of one stitch.
  • Dec: decrease as instructed.
  • St st: stockinette stitch.
  • Garter stitch: knit every row when working flat.
  • I-cord: small knitted cord worked over a few stitches.

Important Notes Before Starting

Work the toy firmly but not tightly. The head and body need rounded shaping, so stuff in small pieces rather than one large clump. The overalls should sit close to the body, with the bib centered on the chest and the straps crossing naturally over the shoulders.

The tabby look comes from both color placement and embroidery. The white muzzle area is knitted as part of the lower face, while darker vertical stripes are added after stuffing. Keep the face symmetrical, but allow the stripes to look soft and handmade.

  • Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of every round.
  • Leave long yarn tails for sewing all small parts.
  • Stuff the head firmly, the body medium-firm, and the arms more softly.
  • Do not overstuff the ears, sandals, satchel, hat, or watering can.
  • Use the photo as placement guidance: large head, small body, green overalls, satchel angled from left shoulder to right hip.

  14. Rnd 14: K6, inc; repeat around. 64 sts.
  15. Rnds 15-22: K all sts for 8 rounds.

Begin the white lower face section. The white area should cover the lower front half of the head and create the soft cheeks seen in the image. Keep the back of the head gray.

  9. Rnd 41: K2, K2tog; repeat around. 24 sts.
  10. Rnd 42: K1, K2tog; repeat around. 16 sts.

Stuff the head firmly. Shape the cheeks by adding a little extra stuffing at the lower front white area. Do not close the neck completely because the body will be sewn to this opening.

Muzzle and Cheek Definition

The kitten has a tiny pink nose, a short vertical mouth line, and soft rounded cheeks. The muzzle is mostly created by the white face section, but a small knitted nose pad gives extra shape.

  1. With white yarn, CO 10 sts and work flat.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: K1, M1R, K8, M1L, K1. 12 sts.
  5. Row 4: P all sts.
  6. Row 5: K all sts.
  7. Row 6: P all sts.
  8. Row 7: K2tog, K8, SSK. 10 sts.
  9. Row 8: P all sts.
  10. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.

Sew this small oval to the center lower face, placing the top edge just below the eyes. Stuff very lightly under the center before closing the last side. The muzzle should sit low and rounded, not pointed.

Using pink yarn, embroider a small triangular nose across 4 stitches. Add one short vertical line down from the nose, then split into a very small curved mouth. Keep the mouth delicate so the kitten keeps the sweet expression from the image.

Tabby Stripe Embroidery on the Head

The tabby stripes should look like soft gray and charcoal markings over the knitted surface. Use dark charcoal yarn or embroidery floss. Work duplicate stitch and long straight embroidery stitches after the head is stuffed.

  • Forehead center stripe: embroider one dark vertical stripe from Rnd 11 to Rnd 21, centered between the eyes.
  • Forehead side stripes: embroider two shorter stripes on each side, starting around Rnd 13 and ending around Rnd 22.
  • Outer cheek stripes: add three short angled lines on each gray cheek, pointing slightly downward toward the white muzzle.
  • Top head blending: add 6 to 8 light gray duplicate stitches around the crown so the color transitions look natural.
  • Eye framing: lightly outline the lower outside edge of each eye with one curved dark stitch if desired.

Ears

The ears are small rounded triangles with gray outer edges and pale inner centers. Make two. Work flat and seam the lower edge slightly curved.

  12. Row 11: K2tog twice. 2 sts.
  13. Row 12: K2tog. 1 st.
  14. Fasten off.

Sew one inner ear onto each outer ear. Fold each ear slightly at the base and sew it to the head between Rnds 12 and 21. The ears should sit wide apart, angled outward about 20 degrees, with the tips leaning slightly away from the center.

Body

The body is smaller than the head, with a rounded belly that fits inside the green overalls. Use white yarn for the neck and upper chest, then gray for the sides if any area shows above the overalls.

  1. Rnd 1: With white yarn, CO 16 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 2: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 3: K1, inc; repeat around. 24 sts.

  17. Rnd 28: K all sts.
  18. Rnd 29: K1, K2tog; repeat around. 16 sts.

Stuff the body medium-firm. Keep the bottom slightly flat so the kitten can sit. Do not make the belly too large because the overalls need to wrap smoothly around the torso.

Legs and Feet

Make two legs. Each leg has a white lower paw, gray upper leg, and rounded foot with embroidered toes. The sandals will be added separately.

  1. Rnd 1: With white yarn, CO 10 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in every st around. 20 sts.
  3. Rnd 3: K all sts.
  4. Rnd 4: K6, inc, K6, inc, K6. 22 sts.
  5. Rnds 5-7: K all sts.
  6. Rnd 8: K5, K2tog, K8, SSK, K5. 20 sts.
  7. Rnd 9: K all sts.
  8. Rnd 10: K4, K2tog, K8, SSK, K4. 18 sts.
  9. Rnd 11: K all sts.
  10. Rnd 12: Change to gray. K all sts.
  11. Rnds 13-22: K all sts.
  12. Rnd 23: K1, K2tog; repeat around. 12 sts.
  13. Rnd 24: K all sts.
  14. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Stuff each foot firmly at the front and more lightly through the leg. Sew the legs to the lower body at the front, about 6 stitches apart. Angle the feet forward so the sandals show clearly beneath the overalls.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Using dark charcoal thread, embroider three toe lines on each white paw. Start each line near the front top of the foot and pull gently toward the center. Do not pull too tightly, or the paw will flatten.

Arms

The arms are slim, soft, and hang beside the body. Each arm has a gray striped upper section and a white paw tip. Make two.

  1. Rnd 1: With white yarn, CO 8 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 2: Inc in every st around. 16 sts.
  3. Rnds 3-6: K all sts.
  4. Rnd 7: K2, K2tog; repeat around. 12 sts.
  5. Rnd 8: Change to gray. K all sts.
  6. Rnds 9-22: K all sts.
  7. Rnd 23: K1, K2tog; repeat around. 8 sts.
  8. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.

Stuff the paw tips lightly and leave the upper arms soft. Add 3 or 4 charcoal duplicate-stitch stripes on each gray arm. Sew the arms to the body just under the head, angled downward so the white paws rest beside the green overalls.

Tail

The tail is visible behind the kitten near the right side of the body. It should be soft, curved, and gray with darker tabby striping.

  1. With gray yarn, CO 10 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-4: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 5: K4, inc, K5. 11 sts.
  4. Rnds 6-18: K all sts.
  5. Rnd 19: K5, inc, K5. 12 sts.
  6. Rnds 20-24: K all sts.
  7. Rnd 25: K2tog around. 6 sts.
  8. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, and pull closed.

Stuff lightly while shaping the tail into a gentle curve. Sew it to the back right lower body so the end peeks from behind the green overalls. Embroider 5 dark curved stripes around the tail.

Green Overalls

The overalls are the main clothing feature. They are garden green, wide through the hips, slightly gathered at the waist, and cropped above the kitten’s white feet. Work the pant section first, then join for the body and add the bib and straps.

  11. Rnds 18-20: K all sts.
  12. BO all sts loosely.

Slide the overalls onto the kitten from the feet upward before sewing the legs permanently if preferred. The cuffs should stop just above the white feet, letting the paws and sandals remain visible.

Front Bib

The bib should sit on the kitten’s chest under the white neck. Sew the side edges of the bib lightly to the overalls so it does not curl.

Overall Straps

Make two green straps. They should rise from the back waist, pass over the shoulders, and attach at the top corners of the bib with tiny tan buttons.

  1. With green yarn and smaller needles, CO 5 sts.
  2. Rows 1-36: K every row for garter stitch.
  3. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.
  4. Repeat for second strap.

Sew one end of each strap to the back waist, 8 stitches apart. Bring each strap over a shoulder and sew it to the top front bib corner. Sew one tiny tan button on top of each front strap end.

Overall Cuffs and Texture

To match the visible knitted fabric in the image, add a small raised cuff edge at the bottom of each pant leg if needed. Pick up 24 sts around one cuff, K1, P1 for 2 rounds, then BO. Repeat for the second cuff.

Leaf Embroidery on the Overalls

The overalls have delicate light green garden sprigs across the bib and lower right leg. Add these after dressing the kitten so the embroidery sits in the correct visible areas.

Curve the handle and sew both ends to the opposite side of the watering can. Add a small ridge around the top by embroidering one ring of cream backstitch.

Facial Details and Eye Finish

The eyes are a key part of the kitten’s expression. The image shows large blue eyes with a glossy dark center. If you use blue safety eyes, secure them firmly before closing the head. If you use black safety eyes, cut two blue felt circles slightly larger than the eyes and place them behind the eye posts before attaching.

  • Place the eyes between Rnds 24 and 25 of the head.
  • Keep about 10 stitches between the eyes.
  • Add one tiny white highlight stitch near each eye if the eyes are plain.
  • Do not place the nose too high; it should sit centered below the eyes.
  • Use gentle thread sculpting under the eyes to create soft cheeks.

For thread sculpting, insert a long needle from the back of the head to the lower outside edge of one eye. Take a tiny stitch, return to the back, and pull gently. Repeat for the other eye. Knot securely and hide the yarn tail inside the head.

Body Striping

Add tabby markings to the arms, legs, tail, and visible head sides. Keep the stripes irregular but balanced. The goal is a soft handmade tabby look, not perfect machine-like lines.

  • Embroider 3 short dark stripes on each arm.
  • Embroider 2 small gray stripes near each upper leg if visible above the overall cuffs.
  • Place 5 curved stripes around the tail.
  • Add 2 small cheek stripes on each side of the face below the ears.
  • Add darker duplicate stitches to the top of the head for depth.

Putting the Kitten Together

Before sewing permanently, pin every part in place and check the proportions. The head should be much larger than the body. The shoulders should be narrow. The overalls should cover most of the torso and both upper legs, while the white paws and sandals remain visible.

  1. Sew the body to the head opening using mattress stitch.
  2. Check that the white neck sits centered below the face.
  3. Sew both legs to the lower front body so the kitten sits with feet forward.
  4. Sew the arms at the side shoulders, angled downward.
  5. Sew the tail to the back right side.
  6. Dress the kitten in the green overalls and secure the waistband with a few hidden stitches.
  7. Attach the bib and straps if they are not already fixed.
  8. Sew the buttons to the strap fronts.
  9. Place the satchel strap diagonally from left shoulder to right hip.
  10. Sew or tack the satchel in place on the front right side.
  11. Sew the leaf clip near the upper right ear.
  12. Place the straw hat, succulent, and watering can beside the kitten for display.

Finishing the Props for Display

The props help recreate the full garden-table scene. They do not need to be attached to the kitten unless the toy is for display only. For a child-safe toy, avoid small buttons, safety eyes, and loose accessories. Embroider the eyes and buttons instead.

  • Succulent placement: behind the kitten’s left side.
  • Watering can placement: near the left foot or garden prop area.
  • Straw hat placement: to the kitten’s right side, brim facing forward.
  • Bee placement: on the straw hat brim, slightly off center.
  • Satchel placement: hanging over the green overalls at the front right hip.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all parts are sewn, check the face from the front. Adjust the cheeks by gently massaging the stuffing. Add final tabby stitches only after the head shape looks even. The nose should be pink, centered, and small, with the mouth stitched lightly below it.

Make sure both ears sit at the same height and angle. The leaf clip should overlap the head slightly without covering the ear. The satchel should lie flat, and the mushroom applique should be clearly visible on the front.

Care Notes

Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap. Do not soak the toy if it has safety eyes, buttons, or structured accessories. Press gently with a towel and reshape the head, ears, overalls, and props while damp.

  • Keep away from high heat.
  • Do not machine wash if small accessories are attached.
  • Allow the toy to air dry completely.
  • Store the straw hat flat so the brim keeps its shape.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, large, and firmly stuffed.
  • The white muzzle area is centered under the blue eyes.
  • The tabby stripes are balanced on the forehead, cheeks, arms, and tail.
  • The overalls fit snugly and show two front buttons.
  • The leaf embroidery appears on the bib and lower pant leg.
  • The mushroom satchel crosses from shoulder to hip.
  • The sandals show tan soles, brown straps, toe lines, and pink flowers.
  • The straw hat includes a wide brim and tiny bee.
  • The succulent pot and watering can are finished as separate garden props.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For long-term display, keep the kitten away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. Dust lightly with a soft brush. If the overalls or satchel shift over time, use a tapestry needle to add one hidden securing stitch at the side seam.

When storing, wrap the kitten in acid-free tissue or clean cotton fabric. Keep the hat, watering can, and succulent in the same box but not pressed against the face. This helps preserve the round cheeks, embroidered details, and soft garden character of the finished kitten.
