Woodland Squirrel Tree Stump Library with Spiral Staircase – Pattern Guide

This woodland display features a tall hollow tree stump home with an open reading room, glowing round window, book shelves, fireplace, cozy armchair, roof acorns, side branch, leafy vines, mushrooms, two small squirrels, a balcony, and a spiral stairway wrapping around the trunk. The finished piece is designed as a decorative amigurumi-style diorama with many tiny stitched details.

Pattern Overview

This pattern uses US crochet terms and is written for a firm amigurumi texture. The tree stump is worked as a tall cylinder with a reinforced base, raised bark ridges, roots, a cutaway front room, and a flat mossy roof. The interior is built separately and sewn inside the opening.

The finished model measures about 12 in / 30.5 cm tall from the base grass to the top acorns, and about 8 in / 20 cm wide across the roots and stair rail. Use a tight gauge so the stump can stand upright and the small furniture keeps its shape.

Skill Level

Intermediate to advanced beginner. The stitches are simple, but the project has many small parts, firm stuffing, shaping, and layered assembly. Read the full assembly section before sewing, because the balcony, stairs, room, and trunk must align carefully.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in dark bark brown, medium bark brown, tan, beige, moss green, leaf green, olive, rust orange, pumpkin orange, cream, yellow gold, dark brown, black, red, white, gray, and small book colors.
  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for the main stump and furniture.
  • 2.5 mm crochet hook for squirrels, books, railing, mushrooms, leaves, and small details.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Plastic canvas, thin cardboard, or firm felt for hidden support pieces.
  • Yarn needle, stitch markers, sewing pins, scissors.
  • Two pairs of 5 mm safety eyes for squirrels, or black embroidery floss.
  • Warm yellow felt or yarn for the window glow, optional.
  • Small amount of fabric glue, optional, only for hidden support and tiny book placement.

Abbreviations

  • MR = magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec = invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FLO = front loop only
  • st / sts = stitch / stitches
  • R / Rnd = row / round
  • FO = fasten off

Gauge and Tension

Gauge is not critical for display size, but it is important for structure. With the 3.0 mm hook, 6 sc and 6 rounds should measure about 1 in / 2.5 cm. If your stitches are loose, use a smaller hook so stuffing and inserts do not show.

Important Construction Notes

  • The stump is worked from the bottom upward as a firm hollow cylinder.
  • The large front opening is made by crocheting back-and-forth rows through the middle section.
  • The interior wall, floor, fireplace, chair, and bookcase are separate panels sewn into the cutaway room.
  • The spiral stairway wraps on the right side from lower front to upper balcony.
  • The balcony sits on the right upper trunk, slightly above the room opening.
  • The roof is a flat oval stump cap with two acorns and fallen leaves.

Main Tree Stump Body

Use dark bark brown and the 3.0 mm hook. Stuff firmly as you go, but leave the middle front opening clear. The trunk is slightly wider at the bottom and gently straight through the body, matching the tall stump shape in the image.

Loose Book Stacks

  • Make 6 small book rectangles using the tiny book method.
  • Stack 3 books beside the chair.
  • Stack 3 books on the lower left bookcase shelf.
  • Use different colors so the room looks full but not crowded.

Positioning the Two Squirrels

For the lower reader squirrel, sew the head to the body first, then sew the body into the armchair. The squirrel should sit slightly leaning back, with feet at the front cushion edge and the book resting between the hands.

For the balcony squirrel, sew the head and body together, then attach the squirrel to the balcony floor. The body should face front, slightly turned left toward the room. Sew the tail behind the body, curving upward beside the arched door.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  1. Sew the interior floor into the stump opening and check that it sits level.
  2. Sew the beige back wall panel inside the stump.
  3. Attach the bookcase to the left back wall.
  4. Attach the fireplace to the right wall and add the small side window behind the stairs.
  5. Sew the rug to the center floor.
  6. Place the armchair on the left side of the room and sew it through the floor.
  7. Sew the lower squirrel into the chair and attach the green book to its paws.
  8. Sew the roof cap to the trunk and add acorns, leaves, and surface stitches.
  9. Attach the balcony door arch, balcony platform, and balcony railing.
  10. Sew the spiral stair leaves from bottom to top, then add the rope posts and rails.
  11. Sew the upper squirrel to the balcony and secure the cup in its paws.
  12. Sew the tree roots to the base of the trunk and attach the trunk to the grass base.
  13. Add mushrooms, leaves, berries, and bark embroidery last.

For the faces, keep the expression soft and friendly. The eyes should sit evenly, the muzzle should be centered, and the smile should be small. Add two tiny cheek stitches in light tan or peach beside each muzzle if you want the same gentle woodland look.

Care Notes

  • This piece is best used as a decorative display, not as a toy for babies or pets.
  • Spot clean with a barely damp cloth.
  • Avoid soaking, twisting, or machine washing because the inner supports may bend.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight for long periods to protect the yarn colors.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The trunk stands upright without leaning.
  • The front opening is clear and the room is visible.
  • The chair, bookcase, fireplace, rug, and squirrel are firmly attached.
  • The staircase curves upward naturally to the balcony.
  • The balcony squirrel faces outward and is securely sewn down.
  • All mushrooms, leaves, acorns, roots, and bark ridges are attached.
  • No loose yarn tails remain visible on the front or inside the room.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, dust the tree stump library gently with a soft brush. Clean small areas with cool water and mild soap on a cloth, then blot dry with a towel. Let the piece air dry completely in a shaded place before storing or displaying again.

Store the finished display in a box with tissue paper around the staircase and balcony. Do not press heavy items against the roof, railing, acorns, or squirrel tails. If the stairs bend during storage, reshape them gently with your fingers.
