Daffodil Raincoat-Date Bunny – Knitting

Daffodil Raincoat-Date Bunny – Knitting

Meet the Daffodil Raincoat-Date Bunny: a sweet, softly stuffed knit friend dressed for a breezy spring stroll. You’ll make a calm taupe bunny with tall ears, a sunny hooded cape, a green skirt trimmed with daffodils, and tiny strap shoes. The set also includes a mini duck companion, a knit umbrella, a small shoulder bag, and a daffodil bouquet with little “raindrop” petals. If you love to buy yarn for seasonal makes, shop for DK cotton or merino, and collect toy stuffing, this project is a charming addition to your handmade gift list.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Project Overview

This design is worked with a tight gauge so the stuffing does not show through. Most pieces are knit in the round, then lightly shaped and stitched together. The clothing is removable, but it is fitted so it stays neat in photos and on display. Keep your stitches consistent and stuff firmly, especially the head and body, to match the clean silhouette in the image.

You will create: (1) Bunny body with embroidered face, (2) Hooded yellow cape with scalloped hood edge, (3) Green skirt with daffodil border and bobbles, (4) Green shoes with yellow soles and straps, (5) Green-and-yellow shoulder bag, (6) Duckling with hood and cape, (7) Green umbrella with curved handle, (8) Daffodil bouquet, (9) Small blue petals.

Finished Size

  • Bunny (standing): about 9–11 in / 23–28 cm tall (depending on yarn and stuffing).
  • Duckling: about 3–4 in / 8–10 cm tall.
  • Umbrella: about 5–6 in / 13–15 cm long.

These measurements assume DK yarn and a dense toy gauge. If you change yarn weight, keep proportions by matching the stated stitch counts and adjusting needle size.

Yarn and Colors

  • A (Bunny Taupe): taupe/stone DK (main body, ears, umbrella handle tip accent if desired).
  • B (Cape Yellow): warm daffodil yellow DK.
  • C (Leaf Green): medium leafy green DK (skirt, shoes, bag, umbrella canopy, bouquet stems).
  • D (Cream Petal): soft cream DK (outer daffodil petals, bouquet wrap).
  • E (Beak/Feet Orange): soft orange DK (duck beak and feet).
  • F (Raindrop Blue): pale sky blue DK (small petals on the table).
  • G (Hood Trim Green): same as C, used as a narrow trim line inside hood opening.

Choose smooth yarns so the stitched face looks crisp. Cotton blends photograph beautifully, while merino makes a softer cuddle texture.

Tools and Notions

  • US 2 (2.75 mm) and US 3 (3.25 mm) needles: DPNs or magic loop.
  • Stitch markers (at least 6), tapestry needle, scissors.
  • Polyfill stuffing.
  • Black embroidery floss or thin black yarn for eyes and mouth.
  • Optional: light brown embroidery floss for subtle nose shading.
  • 1 small button (about 10–12 mm) for the cape closure.
  • Sewing thread to attach button securely.

Gauge (Suggested)

On smaller needle (US 2), stockinette in the round: about 26–30 sts per 4 in / 10 cm. Gauge is not critical, but density is. If you see holes between stitches, go down a needle size.

Abbreviations

  • k knit
  • p purl
  • kfb knit front and back (increase 1)
  • m1L/m1R make 1 left/right (increase 1)
  • k2tog knit 2 together (decrease 1)
  • ssk slip, slip, knit (decrease 1)
  • st(s) stitch(es)

  • RS/WS right side / wrong side
  • CO/BO cast on / bind off
  • Garter knit every row (flat) or alternate knit/purl rnds (in the round)
  • I-cord knitted cord (worked on 2–3 sts)

Helpful Techniques

  • Invisible/ladder close: used to close small circles neatly.
  • Mattress stitch: for clean seams on ears and accessories.
  • Duplicate stitch: for simple leaf motifs if you prefer stitched details.
  • French knot substitute: tiny bobbles can be knit or stitched as small raised dots.

General Notes for Accuracy

Stuff the bunny so the head stays round and the face embroidery does not sink in. The clothing in the image is tidy and structured, so block the cape and skirt lightly before dressing. Keep embellishments small and evenly spaced to match the delicate look.

When attaching flowers and bobbles, use the same placement on both sides. Symmetry is a big part of the “storybook” feel.

Clothing and Accessories

Green Skirt with Daffodil Border

The skirt in the image is a smooth green A-line with a decorative hem: tiny yellow bobbles and daffodil blooms spaced evenly around. Knit from the top down for an easy fit.

Skirt Base

  1. With US 2 and C (green), CO 48 sts. Join in the round, careful not to twist.
  2. Rnd 1–6: (k1, p1) rib around for a snug waistband.
  3. Rnd 7: k all (48).

Create gentle flare with evenly spaced increases. The skirt should sit full like in the image, but not too wide.

  1. Rnd 8: (k7, kfb) repeat around (54).
  2. Rnd 9–10: k all (54).
  3. Rnd 11: (k8, kfb) repeat around (60).
  4. Rnd 12–13: k all (60).
  5. Rnd 14: (k9, kfb) repeat around (66).
  6. Rnd 15–18: k all (66).

Work to length. Aim for the hem to land just above the bunny’s ankles, leaving the shoes visible.

  1. Rnd 19–30: k all (66) or until skirt measures about 3.25–3.75 in / 8–9.5 cm from waistband.

Hem Edge and Bobble Line

In the photo, the very bottom edge looks slightly defined. Add a simple garter ridge, then bind off neatly.

  1. Rnd 31: p all (creates a turning ridge).
  2. Rnd 32: k all.
  3. Rnd 33: p all.
  4. Rnd 34: k all.
  5. BO loosely in knit. Weave in ends.

Daffodil Flowers and Yellow Dots (Embellishment)

You will attach small yellow dots and daffodils around the lower skirt, matching the alternating look in the image. Plan spacing first: place about 10–12 motifs around, depending on your skirt circumference.

  • Make small yellow dots as tiny bobbles (knit separately) or as stitched knots.
  • Make mini daffodils and sew them between dot clusters.
  • Add tiny green leaf stitches beside some flowers for the fresh garden feel.

Mini Yellow Dot (Make 16–24)

  1. With B (yellow), CO 4 sts.
  2. Row 1: k all.
  3. Row 2: p all.
  4. Row 3: (k2tog) twice (2).
  5. Cut yarn, thread tail through 2 sts, pull tight into a bead. Knot.

Sew these dots around the hem line, slightly above the garter ridge, just like the small raised yellow dots in the image.

Mini Daffodil (Make 10–12 for skirt, plus extras for cape and bouquet)

Each daffodil has a small cup center and a soft outer ring. Keep them compact so they don’t overwhelm the skirt.

  1. Outer petals: With D (cream) for bouquet flowers, or B (yellow) for skirt flowers, CO 18 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: (k1, p1) repeat around.
  3. Rnd 2: k all.
  4. Rnd 3: (kfb, k2) repeat around (24).
  5. Rnd 4: p all.
  6. BO loosely. Gather inner edge slightly with a running stitch to form a shallow ruffle.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Now knit the cup center in yellow for the daffodil trumpet.

  1. Center cup: With B (yellow), CO 6 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb each st (12).
  4. Rnd 3–4: k all (12).
  5. Rnd 5: (k2tog) repeat around (6). Cut yarn, pull through to close.

Sew the cup to the center of the outer ring. Pinch the outer ring into 5–6 gentle petal bumps with a few tiny stitches so it reads as petals in photos.

Skirt Placement Guide

  • Mark the front center of the skirt with a removable marker.
  • Place one daffodil slightly to the right of center, and another slightly to the left, like the balanced look in the image.
  • Between flowers, sew 1–2 yellow dots, then another flower, repeating around.
  • Add small green leaf “V” stitches (duplicate stitch) beside a few flowers for depth.

Yellow Hooded Cape (Raincoat Look)

The cape is the standout piece: a warm yellow, short and flared, with a front opening, a small button at the neck, and a hood framed with a scalloped edge. A narrow green line sits just inside the hood opening.

Cape Body (Worked Flat)

  1. With US 3 (3.25 mm) and B (yellow), CO 62 sts.
  2. Row 1 (RS): k all.
  3. Row 2 (WS): k all. This is garter stitch.
  4. Row 3: k all.
  5. Row 4: k all.

Create a gentle flare with increases near each side. The cape in the image drapes outward, not straight down.

  1. Row 5 (RS): k2, kfb, k to last 2 sts, kfb, k2.
  2. Row 6: k all.
  3. Row 7: k2, kfb, k to last 2 sts, kfb, k2.
  4. Row 8: k all.
  5. Repeat Rows 7–8 two more times (you will add 8 sts total across these increase rows).

Continue in garter until cape measures about 2.5–2.75 in / 6.5–7 cm from CO edge, ending with a WS row.

Front Plackets and Neck Shaping

We will form a slightly rounded neckline and leave the center open. This makes the cape close neatly like in the image.

  1. Row 1 (RS): k18, BO 18 sts loosely, k to end (remaining 18).
  2. You now have left front (18 sts) and right front (18 sts) with a neck gap.

Work each side separately for 6 rows to build the upper cape shoulders.

  1. Left front: Join yarn. Work 6 rows garter (k every row).
  2. Right front: Join yarn. Work 6 rows garter (k every row).

Buttonhole (Right Front)

Place the button at the neck center, like the single closure visible in the image.

  1. On the right front, next RS row: k2, yo, k2tog, k to end. (Creates a small buttonhole.)
  2. Work 3 more rows garter on both fronts.

Join for Hood Pickup

To build the hood, you will pick up stitches along the neckline and knit upward.

  1. With RS facing, pick up and knit 18 sts along left neck edge, 18 sts across the back neck edge, and 18 sts along right neck edge (about 54 sts total).
  2. Work flat in garter for 10 rows to create hood height.

Fold hood and seam the top back. The hood should be roomy to sit around the bunny’s head and ears, like in the photo.

  1. With WS facing, fold hood in half. Mattress stitch the top seam for about 4–4.5 in / 10–11.5 cm.
  2. Turn RS out.

Green Inner Trim Line

The photo shows a thin green ring just inside the hood opening. Add it as an applied edge.

  1. With US 2 and C (green), pick up and knit stitches all around the hood opening (including front edges).
  2. Work 1 rnd/row of knit stitches.
  3. BO loosely. Weave in ends neatly.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Scalloped Hood Edge

The hood edge is softly scalloped, like a delicate ruffle. Add a simple scallop trim in yellow.

  1. With B (yellow), pick up and knit stitches around the hood opening, just outside the green trim.
  2. Next row: *(k2, yo, k2tog, k2tog, yo, k2)* repeat around to create small waves.
  3. BO loosely. The edge should ripple into gentle scallops.

Cape Side Motifs (Leaves and Daffodils)

On each side of the cape front, there is a green stem/leaf motif and a small yellow flower accent. Keep them small and placed symmetrically.

  • Use duplicate stitch with C (green) to make a simple “V” leaf cluster on each side, about 1–1.25 in / 2.5–3 cm above the hem.
  • Sew 1 mini daffodil on each side, slightly above the leaves, matching the photo placement.
  • Add 1–2 tiny yellow dots (from the dot recipe) near the shoulder line for extra texture.

Attach Button

Sew the button to the left front, aligned with the buttonhole on the right front. Make sure the cape closes at the neck and hangs open below, creating the neat front split seen in the image.

Shoes (Green with Yellow Soles and Straps)

The shoes are rounded, green on top with a yellow sole edge, and a thin yellow strap across the ankle. Knit firm so they hold shape.

Sole (Make 2)

  1. With US 2 and B (yellow), CO 6 sts. Work flat in garter.
  2. Row 1: k all.
  3. Row 2: kfb, k to last 1, kfb (8).
  4. Row 3: k all.
  5. Row 4: kfb, k to last 1, kfb (10).
  6. Row 5–8: k all (10).
  7. Row 9: k2tog, k to last 2, k2tog (8).
  8. Row 10: k all.
  9. Row 11: k2tog, k to last 2, k2tog (6). BO.

Upper (Make 2)

  1. With C (green), pick up and knit stitches around the sole edge (about 24–28 sts, evenly spaced).
  2. Work in the round: Rnd 1–3: k all.
  3. Toe shaping: Rnd 4: (k4, k2tog) repeat around.
  4. Rnd 5: k all.
  5. Rnd 6: (k3, k2tog) repeat around.
  6. Rnd 7: k all.

Stop when the opening fits the leg snugly. Stuff the shoe lightly at the toe so it stays rounded.

  1. BO loosely. Leave a tail for sewing the back seam if needed.

Straps (Make 2)

  1. With B (yellow), CO 18 sts. Work flat in garter for 2 rows.
  2. BO. Sew one end to the shoe side, wrap over the ankle, and sew the other end down.

Shoulder Bag (Green/Yellow)

The bag is a small green pouch with a yellow top band and tiny yellow accents, plus a slim strap. It hangs at the bunny’s side like in the image.

Bag Body

  1. With US 2 and C (green), CO 24 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1–10: k all (24).
  3. Switch to B (yellow). Rnd 11–14: k all (24) for the top band.
  4. BO. Flatten and mattress stitch the bottom edge closed.

Bag Strap

  1. With C (green), CO 3 sts for an I-cord.
  2. Work I-cord until strap measures about 5–6 in / 13–15 cm.
  3. BO and sew ends to the bag sides.

Bag Accents

  • Sew 6–10 mini yellow dots along the green area near the top edge.
  • If you want a closer match, add 1 tiny daffodil near the front upper corner.

Duck Companion

Duck Body (Yellow)

The duck is a plump oval with a smooth stockinette body, a tiny beak, and orange feet. It wears a small cape and green hood.

  1. With US 2 and B (yellow), CO 6 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb each st (12).
  4. Rnd 3: k all.
  5. Rnd 4: (k1, kfb) repeat (18).
  6. Rnd 5: k all.
  7. Rnd 6: (k2, kfb) repeat (24).
  8. Rnd 7–12: k all (24).

Stuff as you go so the duck stays round and upright.

  1. Rnd 13: (k2, k2tog) repeat (18).
  2. Rnd 14: k all.
  3. Rnd 15: (k1, k2tog) repeat (12).
  4. Rnd 16: k all.
  5. Rnd 17: (k2tog) repeat (6). Cut yarn, close. Weave in end.

Duck Beak (Orange)

  1. With E (orange), CO 8 sts. Work flat in garter for 4 rows.
  2. BO. Fold into a small oval pad and stitch edges lightly.
  3. Sew beak centered low on the face.

Duck Feet (Make 2, Orange)

  1. CO 6 sts. Work flat in garter for 6 rows.
  2. BO. Pinch one edge into three small toe bumps with a few stitches.
  3. Sew feet to the base so the duck stands.

Duck Hood (Green)

  1. With C (green), CO 24 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1–6: k all (24).
  3. Rnd 7: (k2, k2tog) repeat (18).
  4. Rnd 8: k all (18).
  5. Rnd 9: (k1, k2tog) repeat (12).
  6. Rnd 10: (k2tog) repeat (6). Cut yarn, close top.

Leave the bottom open. Slip hood over duck head and tack at the sides so it frames the face like in the image.

Duck Cape (Yellow with Green Edge)

  1. With B (yellow), CO 26 sts. Work flat in garter for 6 rows.
  2. Row 7 (RS): k2tog, k to last 2, k2tog (24).
  3. Row 8: k all.
  4. Repeat Rows 7–8 two more times (20 sts).
  5. BO. Add a green edge by picking up stitches along the outer curve with C and knitting 1 row, then BO.

Wrap cape around duck shoulders. Stitch lightly at the front with a tiny tack so it overlaps neatly.

Umbrella

Umbrella Canopy (Green)

The canopy is a long, closed umbrella shape with visible ridges. Knit it as wedges with decreases so it naturally forms segments.

  1. With US 2 and C (green), CO 6 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb each st (12).
  4. Rnd 3: (k1, kfb) repeat (18).
  5. Rnd 4: k all.

Create ridge lines by working a repeated decrease column every few stitches.

  1. Rnd 5: *(k4, k2tog)* repeat around (15).
  2. Rnd 6: k all.
  3. Rnd 7: *(k3, k2tog)* repeat around (12).
  4. Rnd 8: k all.

Continue until the canopy is long and tapered, matching the photo’s closed umbrella silhouette.

  1. Repeat a decrease rnd every other rnd until you have 6 sts again.
  2. Rnd next: k all (6) for 2 rnds.
  3. Stuff lightly so it stays firm but not bulging.
  4. Cut yarn, close tip tightly.

Umbrella Tip (Beige)

  1. With A (taupe) or a beige scrap, make a tiny ball: CO 6, kfb each (12), k 2 rnds, (k2tog) repeat (6), close.
  2. Sew to the narrow end of the canopy.

Umbrella Edge Dots (Yellow)

Sew mini yellow dots (same as skirt dots) along one long edge of the canopy, spaced like the photo. Aim for 7–9 dots.

Umbrella Handle (Taupe)

  1. With A (taupe), make a 3-st I-cord about 6–7 in / 15–18 cm.
  2. Thread a thin craft wire inside if you want a perfect curve.
  3. Bend the end into a hook shape. Stitch the bend in place so it holds.
  4. Sew the straight end securely into the canopy base.

Daffodil Bouquet

Flowers (Make 3)

The bouquet in the image shows cream outer petals with yellow cups. Use the mini daffodil method, but make the outer ring slightly larger for a fuller bloom.

  1. Outer ring: With D (cream), CO 24 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: (k1, p1) repeat.
  3. Rnd 2: k all.
  4. Rnd 3: (kfb, k3) repeat (30).
  5. Rnd 4: p all. BO loosely. Gather inner edge into a flower cup.
  6. Center cup: With B (yellow), CO 6, kfb each (12), k 3 rnds, (k2tog) repeat (6), close.

  2. Sew one stem to each flower back center.

Bundle Wrap

  1. Cut a small strip of cream yarn or knit a tiny band: CO 6 sts, knit 4 rows, BO.
  2. Gather stems together and wrap band around. Stitch in place.

Blue Petals (Raindrops)

These small blue shapes look like little fallen petals or raindrops. Make 5–7 pieces to scatter near the umbrella.

  10. Row 9: k2tog, k2, k2tog (4). Cut yarn, pull through, shape into a teardrop and stitch the point lightly.

Assembly

Join Legs to Body

Position legs so the bunny stands balanced. In the image, the legs are close together and straight.

  • Sew each leg to the lower body sides, leaving a small gap between legs.
  • Add extra stuffing at the hip area while sewing to stabilize standing.
  • Check the stance on a flat surface before tightening stitches.

Attach Arms

  • Sew arms to the upper torso, slightly forward so they peek from under the cape.
  • Keep arms low and relaxed, matching the calm pose in the image.

Attach Head

  • Center the head on the neck opening.
  • Use the long body tail to stitch around the neck in small, even stitches.
  • Add more stuffing at the neck if the head feels wobbly.

Attach Ears

Ears sit high on the head and stand upright inside the hood. Sew them close to the top center line, evenly spaced.

  • Pin both ears first and check symmetry from the front.
  • Sew the base firmly. Keep the upper ear unstuffed so it stays slim.

Dress the Bunny

  • Slide skirt on first, waistband sitting at the natural waist.
  • Put on shoes, then stitch them lightly to the feet if you want them fixed.
  • Wrap cape on last, button at the neck, and pull hood around the face.

Place Accessories

  • Sew or tie the shoulder bag strap so the bag rests at the bunny’s side.
  • Position umbrella near the bunny’s feet for display.
  • Set duck companion beside the bunny, angled slightly inward like in the photo.
  • Place the bouquet and blue petals near the umbrella for the “rainy date” scene.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Embroider eyes as small vertical ovals, spaced evenly and set slightly above the muzzle line. Stitch a tiny “Y” nose and a short split mouth, keeping lines thin and centered. Add a few tiny stitches to define the snout curve if desired. Re-check all embellishments for symmetry, then secure every knot inside the body.

Care Notes

Display pieces away from direct sunlight to keep the yellow bright. Handle the scalloped hood edge gently so it stays crisp. If the toy is for decor, spot-clean only and keep it on a shelf or basket to prevent dust buildup in the textured flowers.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head is firmly stuffed and centered on the neck.
  • Ears are even and stand upright.
  • Cape closes at the neck and hangs open below the button.
  • Skirt hem embellishments are evenly spaced all around.
  • Shoes match in size and straps sit at the same height.
  • Duck hood frames the face and cape overlaps neatly.
  • Umbrella handle curve is secure and canopy tip is closed tightly.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For light cleaning, use a soft dry brush or lint roller to lift dust from garter ridges and flower centers. For a small spot, dab with cool water and a tiny amount of gentle soap, then blot dry with a towel. Reshape the hood scallops and skirt hem while damp and let air-dry fully. Store in a breathable cotton bag with tissue support, and avoid hanging the bag strap under weight so it doesn’t stretch over time.
