Bring a tiny vacation vibe to your craft table with this Bird-of-Paradise Mid-Century Sunroom House. It’s a two-level open-front mini house with a pool deck, sliding glass door, and a cozy interior scene. If you like to browse crochet dollhouse decor to buy online, this build will feel familiar and inspiring.
Inside you’ll make a living nook with a console, speakers, lamp, wall art, and a bright rug, plus a detailed kitchen with mugs and jars. Outside, you’ll add loungers, a striped umbrella, and a palm. If you shop for amigurumi supplies, mini home décor sets, or crochet kit bundles to buy, you’ll love gathering colors for this one.
Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.
Project Overview
This design recreates the scene in the photo: a modern mini house with a slanted roof and open face, an upstairs sunroom/patio filled with plants, and a downstairs room showing a small dining nook and a full kitchen wall. The front deck includes an oval pool, two loungers, an umbrella, and a tall palm on the right.
Because the details are tiny, you will use multiple hook sizes. The structure is firm and square, so tighter stitches matter. The miniature items (mugs, jars, radio, shoes) are easiest with thinner yarn and a smaller hook. Keep stitch tension consistent for clean edges and crisp corners.
Finished Size
- House (without deck): about 9 in (23 cm) wide, 4.5 in (11.5 cm) deep, 8 in (20 cm) tall at the high roof side.
- Deck with pool: about 12 in (30.5 cm) wide, 8.5 in (21.5 cm) deep.
- Bear: about 4.5 in (11.5 cm) tall.
Skill Level
- Confident beginner to intermediate (many small parts).
- Techniques include color changes, simple embroidery, working in rows and rounds, and firm panel joining.
Yarn, Thread, and Hook Plan
Use three thicknesses to match the miniature scale in the photo.
- Main yarn (worsted/#4 cotton or cotton blend): for house walls, roof, deck, pool border, large furniture.
- Fine yarn (sport/#2 or DK/#3): for plants, small décor, palm leaves, bear clothing details.
- Micro thread (crochet thread size 10 or very fine yarn): for mugs, jars, knobs, sunglasses, tiny trims.
- Hook A: 3.25 mm (for worsted structure panels).
- Hook B: 2.75 mm (for tighter structure edges, pool water spiral, loungers).
- Hook C: 2.25 mm (for DK/sport plants and small décor).
- Hook D: 1.75 mm (for thread-scale mugs, jars, tiny knobs).
Colors (Match the Photo)
- Sand/Beige: house walls, roof edge, structural columns.
- Warm Brown: floors, deck “wood,” cabinets, console, lounger frames.
- White: pool coping, sliding door frame, small highlights.
- Pool Blue + Light Blue: water surface and ripples.
- Green shades: plants, palm leaves, trailing vines.
- Terracotta/Orange: plant pots, Bird-of-Paradise accents.
- Accent colors: teal, mustard, coral, and cream for rug and décor.
- Bear colors: light tan body, darker tan muzzle, black for nose and sunglasses.
Notions and Tools
- Fiberfill stuffing.
- Plastic canvas or thin craft foam for floors, roof, and deck stiffening.
- Optional: thin cardboard for cabinet faces (hidden), clear plastic sheet for sliding “glass.”
- Tapestry needle, stitch markers, small scissors.
- Fabric glue (optional) for tiny décor placement.
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- inc = increase (2 sc in same st)
- dec = decrease (invisible decrease preferred)
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- blo = back loop only
- flo = front loop only
- st(s) = stitch(es)
- RS/WS = right side / wrong side
Important Notes for a Clean Mini House
- Structure first: Crochet panels, stiffen them, then assemble.
- Short paragraphs build: Make one zone at a time (deck, downstairs, upstairs).
- Keep edges square: Use ch 1 turning chain that does not count as a stitch, unless noted.
- Test-fit constantly: Tiny décor looks best when scaled to the room.
Gauge
Gauge is not critical for décor pieces, but it is important for the house shell. With worsted cotton and Hook A (3.25 mm), aim for a tight fabric where stuffing and stiffener do not show through. If your stitches are loose, switch to Hook B (2.75 mm) for the walls and roof edging.

Section 1: Deck Base With “Plank” Texture
Hook A (3.25 mm), worsted yarn in Warm Brown. The deck is a flat rectangle with a subtle plank feel created by working in blo rows. This also helps keep the deck from stretching. You can later add thin surface lines using embroidery, but the blo texture often looks like boards already.
Deck Panel
- ch 61.
- Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (60). ch 1, turn.
- Rows 2–40: sc across in blo (60). ch 1, turn.
Fasten off. Block lightly. Cut a stiffener (plastic canvas or foam) slightly smaller than the panel, leaving about 1/4 in (6 mm) margin from edges to reduce bulk in the border.
Deck Border
Hook B (2.75 mm), Warm Brown. Work a firm edge to prevent curling and create a neat frame.
- Join yarn at any corner. sc evenly around, placing 3 sc in each corner. Keep sides flat.
- Round 2: sc around, 3 sc in each corner again.
Do not fasten off yet if you want to crochet the pool opening directly. If you prefer a separate pool insert, fasten off now and follow the pool instructions as a separate piece.
Section 2: Oval Pool With Rippling Water
The pool in the photo is an oval with a white rim, bright blue water, and lighter ripple lines. We will make a white “coping” ring, then a blue water insert. The ladder is a small stitched piece in pale gray/white.
Pool Opening Placement
Center the pool toward the front edge of the deck. The pool is wide and low, leaving space on the right for the bear and palm, and on the left for loungers and umbrella. Mark an oval on the deck with pins to preview size before stitching.
Pool Coping Ring (Oval Frame)
Hook B (2.75 mm), worsted White. Crochet an oval ring that you will sew onto the deck. It sits slightly raised, like a rim.
- ch 32.
- Round 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 29 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Rotate to work underside of chain: sc in next 29 ch, 2 sc in last ch (creates the second end curve). (64 total)
- Round 2: sc around; at each end curve, place 3 sc over the center sc of the 3-sc group (keep oval shape). (64)
- Round 3: sc around in blo for a crisp top edge. (64)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Do not stuff. Shape into a smooth oval.
Water Insert (Spiral Disc + Ripple Lines)
Hook B (2.75 mm), worsted Pool Blue. Make an oval fill that sits inside the white ring. It should be slightly smaller than the inner opening of the coping ring, so it doesn’t buckle.
- ch 30.
- Round 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 27 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Rotate: sc in next 27 ch, 2 sc in last ch. (60)
- Round 2: sc around; add 2 extra sc spaced along each curve end (shape adjustment). (64)
- Round 3: sc around. (64)
Fasten off. With Light Blue and a needle, embroider simple curved ripple lines and a few short dashes, matching the photo’s gentle wave marks. Keep them thin and spaced, not crowded.
Pool Ladder
Hook D (1.75 mm), thread in Light Gray or White. The ladder in the photo has two curved rails and small steps. Make it stiff with tight stitches.
- Rails (make 2): ch 14. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch and across (13). ch 1, turn. Row 2: sc 13. Fasten off.
- Steps (make 3): ch 6, sc in 2nd ch and across (5). Fasten off.
Curve each rail gently into a “U” shape by stitching the ends closer together when attaching. Sew steps between rails, evenly spaced. Attach ladder to the pool rim on the right side, angled slightly toward the viewer.
Attach Pool to Deck
- Sew the white coping ring to the deck first, centered near the front.
- Sew the blue water insert inside the ring, slightly recessed.
- Add ladder last so it sits on top of the rim.
Section 3: House Shell (Two Levels, Open Front)
The house is a box-like shell with an open front, a slanted roof, and two visible levels. The left side shows an upstairs plant lounge and downstairs dining nook behind sliding doors. The right side shows an upstairs living zone and a downstairs kitchen wall.
Hook A (3.25 mm), worsted Beige. Make firm panels: back wall, side walls, center divider, and upper floor ceiling panel. Stiffen each with plastic canvas after crocheting.
Back Wall Panel
- ch 49.
- Row 1: sc in 2nd ch and across (48). ch 1, turn.
- Rows 2–40: sc across (48). ch 1, turn.
Fasten off. This is the full width of the house interior.
Left Side Wall Panel
The roof is slanted, higher on the left. Create a trapezoid by decreasing at the top.
- ch 25.
- Row 1: sc across (24). ch 1, turn.
- Rows 2–28: sc across (24).
- Row 29: sc 22, dec (23). ch 1, turn.
- Row 30: sc 21, dec (22). ch 1, turn.
- Row 31: sc 20, dec (21). ch 1, turn.
- Row 32: sc 19, dec (20). ch 1, turn.
- Rows 33–36: sc across (20).

- Make 2: ch 2. Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch (6).
- Rounds 2–30: sc around (6).
Lightly stuff, keep straight, fasten off with tail for sewing.
Section 4: Slanted Roof
The roof is a single panel that slopes from left (higher) to right (lower). It has a beige edge trim that looks like a thick roof line in the photo.
Roof Panel
Hook A, Beige.
- ch 51.
- Row 1: sc in 2nd ch and across (50). ch 1, turn.
- Rows 2–20: sc across (50).
Fasten off. Stiffen with plastic canvas cut to match.
Roof Edge Trim
Hook B (2.75 mm), Beige. Work a tidy border that reads as a thick roof edge.
- Join yarn on roof edge, sc evenly around, 3 sc in corners.
- Round 2: sc around. Add one extra sc every 8–10 stitches if the edge pulls.
Fasten off.
Section 5: Assemble the House Shell
Assembly is easier if you stiffen panels first. Slide plastic canvas inside panels (between crochet and a lining if you use one), or stitch it directly to the WS with small tacking stitches.
- Sew left wall and right wall to the back wall.
- Sew the center divider to the back wall at the midpoint (24 stitches from either side).
- Sew the lower floor panel along the bottom edges inside.
- Sew the upper floor/ceiling panel at mid-height (about row 20 from bottom on the walls).
- Attach the two front columns at the front left and front right corners.
- Sew the roof on top, aligning slope from left high side to right low side.

The bear stands on the right side of the deck wearing a striped top and blue shorts, with small sneakers and black sunglasses. The body is a classic amigurumi shape. Use a tight stitch so stuffing does not show.

Section 16: Final Staging of All Mini Decor
Now that the structure and the big pieces are complete, place everything to match the photo. This step is where the scene becomes believable. Take a moment to position plants at different heights, angle the loungers toward the pool, and keep the bear near the right edge beside the palm.
- Upstairs left: shelf unit on back wall, lots of pots, trailing vine, round chair, small mat.
- Upstairs right: console centered, speakers flanking, lamp arcing above, framed art on wall, geometric rug below.
- Downstairs left: sliding door unit, dining table and chairs inside.
- Downstairs right: full cabinet wall, counter items, sink and faucet, runner rug.
- Deck: pool centered front, ladder right side, two loungers left, umbrella left rear, large front pot near center, palm right rear, bear front right.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Join the bear head to the body with strong stitches and add any final embroidery lines for the mouth. Confirm sunglasses sit firmly and do not slide. Secure tiny décor with a few hidden stitches, especially mugs and jars, so they stay in place when the piece is moved.
Care Notes
Keep the mini house away from high humidity and direct sunlight to reduce fading and warping. If displayed on a shelf, dust gently with a soft brush. Avoid pulling on tiny leaves and accessories; lift the entire base from underneath instead of grabbing the roof edge.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- House shell is square, roof slope matches left-high/right-low.
- Pool rim is smooth, water insert lies flat, ladder is attached securely.
- Kitchen has visible cabinets, counter, sink, mugs, and jars.
- Upstairs living zone includes console, speakers, lamp, wall art, and rug.
- Outdoor area includes two loungers, umbrella, palm, and bear with sunglasses.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
For spot cleaning, use a barely damp cloth and press gently—do not rub. Let pieces air-dry fully before returning them to the display. If you need deeper cleaning, remove loose décor first, then lightly wash only the deck surface with minimal moisture. Store in a dust-proof box to preserve crisp edges.
