About This Pattern

This pattern is written in US English and is designed to recreate the knitted pieces shown in the photo as closely as possible.

The tutorial includes the bunny, clothing, hat, bag, shoes, tiny fox, fox sweater, fox beret, and acorn accessory.

The style is softly rustic and slightly oversized, with a large rounded head, long ears, slim body, long legs, and small understated facial features.

The bunny sits at about 15 inches tall from the top of the hat to the bottoms of the shoes when posed like the sample.

The fox sits at about 5 inches tall, making it a lovely scale companion.

Gauge

28 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches in stockinette using DK yarn on 2.75 mm needles.

Gauge matters because the proportions of the face, body, limbs, and clothing depend on a firm fabric.

Your knitted fabric should be dense enough that stuffing does not show through.

Bunny Muzzle Shaping

The sample has a very gentle central muzzle, not a protruding snout.

Using matching ivory yarn, make one horizontal sculpting stitch from side to side about halfway up the lower front of the head.

Pull only lightly so the face remains soft.

Create a short vertical center indentation from the lower muzzle point upward about 3/8 inch.

This will help the embroidered nose sit neatly.

Bunny Ears

Make 2 in ivory yarn. Work flat.

  1. CO 14 sts.
  2. Row 1 (WS): Purl.
  3. Row 2 (RS): Knit.

  16. Row 22: Purl 2 together. 1 st.

Facial Embroidery

The bunny face is very minimal.

  • Embroider two small black eyes as short vertical seed stitches
  • Place them wide apart on the upper half of the face
  • Embroider the nose in dark brown as a small upside-down triangle
  • Add a short vertical line below the nose
  • Work a tiny split mouth with one stitch to each side

The fox face should also stay simple.

  • Two tiny black eyes close to the muzzle line
  • One small black nose at the tip of the cream muzzle
  • No large smile
  • No heavy cheek shaping

Assembly Order for Best Accuracy

  1. Sew bunny legs to the lower front underside of the body so they dangle forward when seated.
  2. Sew bunny arms to upper body sides with a slight downward angle.
  3. Attach bunny head centered on body.
  4. Sew ears high on the head but allow them to fall low along the cheeks.
  5. Dress bunny in sweater first.
  6. Add overalls and sew straps in final position.
  7. Attach belt to overalls.
  8. Sew on shoes and optional sock cuffs.
  9. Place hat low enough to frame the forehead.
  10. Sew bag strap diagonally across the chest.
  11. Assemble fox completely.
  12. Position fox seated beside bunny.

Proportion Notes

To match the photographed look, the bunny head must be visually larger than the torso.

The ears should be long enough to reach near the lower jaw and upper shoulder line once attached.

The legs should be noticeably longer than the arms.

The arms should end around the hip area.

The hat should sit deep, almost touching the eye line.

The bib of the overalls should be narrow and tall.

The fox should be small enough that its head reaches only around the bunny’s elbow height.

Helpful Finishing Tips

  • Use small, tight stitches for seaming so the toys keep a tailored silhouette.
  • Stuff firmly enough to hold shape, but do not overstretch the knitted fabric.
  • Steam garments lightly instead of wet blocking for better structure.
  • Tack the bag and hat in place if the set is intended as display decor.
  • Keep all facial embroidery tiny because oversized features will change the character completely.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Sit the bunny before sewing the legs permanently so you can test the exact angle. The best pose is slightly relaxed, with the feet forward and the knees soft. Keep the ears low and natural. Add the face only after the head is fully stuffed and attached.

For the bunny, place the eyes evenly and keep them small. The nose should sit low on the center of the face. For the fox, keep the muzzle neat and compact. A little asymmetry in the beret tilt adds charm.

Care Notes

These toys are best suited for gentle display or careful supervised play. If making them for a child, secure every stitched detail very firmly. Avoid loose buttons for very young children and embroider button details instead when needed.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Spot clean with cool water, mild soap, and a soft cloth. Do not machine wash unless all parts are securely sewn and no metal findings are used. Reshape while damp and dry flat away from direct sun.

For long-term storage, wrap in clean tissue and keep in a dry box away from moisture, dust, and moth exposure. Avoid hanging the toy by the bag, hat, or ears. Proper storage helps the knitted stitches stay smooth and crisp.
