This charming yellow striped bunny set is designed to echo the sweet, collectible look of a handmade heirloom toy. The finished project includes the bunny, striped dress, brimmed hat, tiny shoulder bag, shoes, squirrel friend, flower pot, and watering can shown in the image. It makes a lovely nursery decor piece, spring display toy, baby shower gift, Easter shelf accent, or handmade item for knitters who usually shop for toy knitting kits, rabbit doll patterns, or artisan stuffed animals. The shapes are soft, balanced, and neatly proportioned for a polished boutique-style finish.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

  • Eyes: black embroidery thread or two small black safety eyes, about 4 mm
  • Embroidery thread: dark brown or black for nose and mouth
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers

Finished Size

  • Bunny: about 12 inches tall from feet to top of ears
  • Squirrel: about 4 1/2 inches tall
  • Flower pot: about 2 inches tall
  • Watering can: about 2 1/4 inches long

Gauge

32 stitches and 40 rounds = 4 inches in stockinette on US 2 needles using DK yarn, worked firmly for toys.

A tight gauge matters. The bunny in the image has a smooth, dense fabric with very little stuffing show-through. If your stitches are loose, go down a needle size.

Construction Overview

The bunny is made in separate knitted pieces and sewn together. The head is slightly larger than the upper torso, the arms are slim and gently tapered, the legs are short but sturdy, and the ears are long and softly rounded. The dress sits high at the waist and flares outward. The hat has a shallow dome and a rolled-looking brim. The accessories are scaled small, neat, and decorative.

For the most accurate look, stuff the bunny firmly but not hard. The image shows soft shaping rather than a very stiff toy. Keep the neck stable, the lower body balanced, and the ears lightly stuffed or left almost flat.

Bunny Muzzle Shaping

The face in the image is very simple and refined. There are no large cheeks added separately, so use light sculpting instead of bulky muzzle pieces.

  • Take two small horizontal stitches about 1 inch apart on the front lower face.
  • Pull gently to create a slight inward shape below the eyes.
  • Secure without making deep dimples.

  5. Rnds 10 to 12: Knit.

Stuff very lightly so it holds shape but still looks hollow.

  1. Rnd 13: K2tog around. 8 sts.
  2. Draw closed.

For the base opening, sew cast-on end mostly closed, leaving a flat bottom.

For the spout, CO 4 sts with gray and work I-cord for 10 rounds. On next round, switch one stitch to green if desired for the tip accent. Sew spout to front lower side at an upward angle.

For the handle, CO 18 sts with gray and knit 2 rows. BO. Curve and sew from upper back to side base.

Positioning and Assembly Order

  1. Sew legs to lower body, spaced evenly so the bunny stands balanced.
  2. Sew arms high on the sides, angled slightly downward.
  3. Sew head to body with the face centered.
  4. Sew ears to top of head, leaning gently outward.
  5. Put on dress and tack at shoulders or under arms if desired.
  6. Place hat low enough to sit just above the eyes and between the ears.
  7. Add shoes to feet and tack in place.
  8. Sling bag from left shoulder to right hip, matching the image.
  9. Assemble squirrel, then place acorn between paws.
  10. Arrange flower pot to bunny’s left side and squirrel to bunny’s right side.
  11. Place watering can near the flower pot.

Facial Embroidery Placement

The bunny face is understated. Keep the features small.

  • Eyes: place between head Rnds 18 and 22, about 7 sts apart
  • Nose: embroider a tiny vertical triangle centered about 6 rounds below the eyes
  • Mouth: extend a short straight line downward from nose, then one tiny slanted stitch on each side

The squirrel eyes should be tiny black knots or stitches, placed close together for a gentle expression. Add a small nose centered low on the face.

Styling Notes for Best Visual Match

  • Keep the bunny body slim under the dress, not overly round.
  • The head should be slightly larger than the body width.
  • The ears should be tall and narrow with softly rounded tips.
  • The dress should flare enough to create a bell shape over the body.
  • The hat brim should turn outward slightly, not stand stiffly.
  • The bag should sit flat and small, never oversized.
  • The squirrel should be compact, with the tail taller than the head.
  • The flower pot and watering can are decorative accents, so keep them neat and miniature.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check that the head is centered before closing the neck seam completely. Shape the cheeks with your fingers while adjusting stuffing so the face looks smooth. Embroider the eyes first, then the nose, then the mouth. Sew the ears only after the hat position is tested. Add tiny tacking stitches inside the dress crossover and under the hat brim if needed so everything stays in place.

Care Notes

These knitted toys are best kept as decorative soft toys or gently handled display pieces. Spot clean whenever possible. If full washing is necessary, hand wash in cool water with mild soap, squeeze gently in a towel, reshape carefully, and dry flat away from direct heat or strong sun.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head centered and firmly attached
  • Ears symmetrical and angled outward
  • Dress crossover sitting flat
  • Hat placed low and even
  • Shoes aligned under legs
  • Bag hanging diagonally at the correct side
  • Squirrel tail secure and curved
  • Flower and watering can balanced for display

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished set in a dry place and avoid hanging it by the ears, bag strap, or hat brim. To keep the fabric smooth, do not over-handle with damp hands or display in humid conditions. Brush dust away softly with clean dry fingers or a very soft cloth. If packed for gifting or storage, wrap each piece in tissue so small accessories keep their shape.
