Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written to recreate the full scene as closely as possible: the standing bunny in a cranberry bonnet and layered dress, the small cranberry shoes, the little handbag, the hedgehog friend in a cap and vest, the tiny apple, and the knitted gingham mat with a miniature book.

The main bunny has a cream face, long hanging ears, a softly rounded body hidden under a wide skirt, short rounded arms, and a refined vintage outfit with deep cranberry panels and cream ruffles. The dress is the focal point, so shaping and trim placement matter.

The construction is friendly for knitters who already know basic toy methods, but every section is broken into manageable steps. Most pieces are knitted flat and seamed, while a few small parts may be worked in the round if that is your preference.

Materials

  • Main bunny yarn: DK weight in cream.
  • Dress and bonnet yarn: DK weight in deep cranberry.
  • Trim yarn: DK weight in cream.
  • Hedgehog body yarn: DK weight in taupe, brown, beige, and small amount of blue.
  • Optional floral embroidery yarn: cranberry, cream, soft green.
  • Needles: US 2.5 mm and US 3 mm straight needles or your preferred sizes to achieve firm toy fabric.
  • Double-pointed needles: optional for tiny circular pieces.
  • Tapestry needle for seaming and embroidery.
  • Locking stitch markers for placement.
  • Toy stuffing.
  • Black embroidery thread for eyes if not using safety eyes.
  • Very small black beads or 5 mm safety eyes, optional.
  • Thin ribbon wire not required; the bonnet and bows are shaped entirely in knitting and soft sewing.
  • Cardboard or plastic canvas scrap for the tiny book cover, optional.

Gauge and Finished Size

Gauge: 28 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches in stockinette on US 2.5 mm needles after light blocking. Toy knitting should be dense, so it is better to use a smaller needle than usual.

Finished bunny size: approximately 12 to 13 inches tall from foot to top of bonnet when standing posed. Body itself is about 8 inches tall. Hedgehog is about 3 inches tall.

Important: exact size may vary, but keep the gauge firm. Loose knitting will distort the clean facial shape and make the dress hang poorly.

Design Notes Before You Begin

The bunny in the picture has a narrow, refined face rather than a round teddy face. The muzzle is shaped with embroidery, not a protruding separate snout. Keep the head softly oval with a slightly flatter lower face so the nose embroidery sits neatly.

The ears are long, narrow, and drape straight down from underneath the bonnet. They are not wired, and they should look soft. Knit them firmly so they hold a clean edge and do not twist too much.

The body is simple and compact because the dress does most of the visual work. Keep the torso slim and slightly tapered. The skirt layers are what create the grand silhouette.

The sleeves are short and puffed at the top, finishing in deep ruffles of cream. The front placket is cream with three cranberry bows, and the overskirt opens in front to show the cream floral underskirt.

Main Bunny: Legs

Knit 2 in cream. Make the legs first. They are short and rounded, because the dress covers most of them. Work flat.

  1. CO 14 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Begin with a WS row and work in stockinette for 4 rows total.
  3. Row 5: k1, inc, k10, inc, k1. 16 sts.
  4. Row 6: p.
  5. Row 7: k.
  6. Row 8: p.

  8. Rows 10 to 18: Work 9 rows stockinette.
  9. Row 19: k2tog, k14, ssk. 16 sts.
  10. Row 20: p.
  11. Row 21: k2tog, k12, ssk. 14 sts.
  12. Rows 22 to 28: Work 7 rows stockinette.
  13. BO knitwise.

Leave a long tail for seaming. Seam each leg along the side, gather the cast-on edge lightly into a rounded foot, stuff the foot firmly, then more lightly up the leg. Flatten the top opening closed later when attaching to the body.

Main Bunny: Body and Torso

The body is worked flat in cream as one piece from lower body to neck. It should be slim. Make 2 pieces.

  1. CO 20 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 6: Work in stockinette, starting with a WS purl row.
  3. Row 7: k1, inc, k18, inc, k1. 22 sts.
  4. Row 8: p.
  5. Row 9: k1, inc, k20, inc, k1. 24 sts.
  6. Rows 10 to 16: Work 7 rows stockinette.
  7. Row 17: k1, inc, k22, inc, k1. 26 sts.
  8. Rows 18 to 26: Work 9 rows stockinette.
  9. Row 27: k2tog, k22, ssk. 24 sts.
  10. Row 28: p.
  11. Row 29: k2tog, k20, ssk. 22 sts.
  12. Rows 30 to 34: Work 5 rows stockinette.
  13. Row 35: k2tog, k18, ssk. 20 sts.
  14. Row 36: p.
  15. Row 37: k2tog, k16, ssk. 18 sts.
  16. Rows 38 to 42: Work 5 rows stockinette.
  17. Row 43: k2tog, k14, ssk. 16 sts.
  18. Row 44: p.
  19. Row 45: k2tog, k12, ssk. 14 sts.
  20. Rows 46 to 50: Work 5 rows stockinette.
  21. BO.

Place the two body pieces together and seam the sides, leaving the bottom and neck open at first. Attach the legs at the lower body so they sit close together and slightly forward. The bunny in the image is hidden under the skirt, so only a little of the leg structure matters.

Stuff the body firmly at the base, then medium-firm through the torso. Do not overstuff the upper torso. A slightly softer upper body helps the dress settle naturally.

Main Bunny: Arms

Knit 2 in cream. These are short and rounded with little shaping. Work flat.

  1. CO 12 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 10: Work 10 rows stockinette, starting with WS purl row.
  3. Row 11: k1, inc, k10, inc, k1. 14 sts.
  4. Rows 12 to 18: Work 7 rows stockinette.
  5. Row 19: k2tog, k10, ssk. 12 sts.
  6. Rows 20 to 22: Work 3 rows stockinette.
  7. BO.

Seam each arm, stuff lightly, and flatten the upper edge. The paws should look softly mitten-shaped rather than fingered. Set aside.

Main Bunny: Head

The head is made from 2 shaped side pieces plus a center face gusset for a refined toy-animal look. This gives the neat vertical knitted line down the face and a smoother muzzle area. Use cream throughout.

Head Side Pieces

Center Face Gusset

  1. CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: p.
  3. Row 2: k1, inc, k4, inc, k1. 8 sts.
  4. Row 3: p.
  5. Row 4: k1, inc, k6, inc, k1. 10 sts.
  6. Row 5: p.
  7. Row 6: k1, inc, k8, inc, k1. 12 sts.
  8. Rows 7 to 22: Work 16 rows stockinette.
  9. Row 23: k2tog, k8, ssk. 10 sts.
  10. Row 24: p.
  11. Row 25: k2tog, k6, ssk. 8 sts.
  12. Row 26: p.
  13. BO.

Seam the gusset to the curved inner edges of the two side pieces. Then seam the back of the head. Before fully closing, stuff firmly but not rock-hard. Shape the cheeks gently with your fingers so the lower face becomes slightly rounded and smooth.

Attach the head to the neck opening with small invisible stitches. Angle the head very slightly forward. In the image, the face looks humble and soft, not lifted upward.

Main Bunny: Ears

Knit 2 in cream. The ears are long, narrow, and softly tapered. They hang down from beneath the bonnet. Work flat.

  1. CO 8 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 6: Work stockinette.
  3. Row 7: k1, inc, k6, inc, k1. 10 sts.
  4. Rows 8 to 18: Work 11 rows stockinette.
  5. Row 19: k1, inc, k8, inc, k1. 12 sts.
  6. Rows 20 to 46: Work 27 rows stockinette.
  7. Row 47: k2tog, k8, ssk. 10 sts.
  8. Row 48: p.
  9. Row 49: k2tog, k6, ssk. 8 sts.
  10. Row 50: p.
  11. Row 51: k2tog, k4, ssk. 6 sts.
  12. Row 52: p.
  13. Row 53: k2tog, k2, ssk. 4 sts.
  14. Row 54: p.
  15. BO.

Fold each ear lengthwise with RS out and seam the edge, leaving the lower opening free. Lightly steam if needed. Do not stuff. Stitch ears to the head slightly behind the face centerline so they fall straight down on each side.

Facial Embroidery

The face in the image is minimal and elegant. Use tiny black eyes placed wide apart, level with the upper third of the muzzle area. They should be small dots, not large toy eyes.

  • Place eyes about 9 to 10 knitted rows below the top center of the face.
  • Space them about 10 to 12 stitches apart.
  • Embroider a small Y-shaped nose and mouth in dark brown or cranberry-brown thread.
  • The nose should sit low on the face, centered on the vertical line of the knitted face gusset.
  • Add one soft horizontal muzzle stitch on each side to create the divided rabbit mouth look.

Keep the expression calm. Avoid blush and heavy sculpting. The image shows a very clean traditional bunny face.

Underskirt Base

The visible cream underskirt has floral motifs and a wide ruffle. This layer is important because it fills the front opening of the overskirt. Knit it as a separate wrap skirt attached to the waist.

  1. Using cream, CO 96 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 6: k1, p1 rib.
  3. Row 7: Knit, increasing 12 sts evenly across. 108 sts.
  4. Rows 8 to 26: Stockinette for 19 rows.
  5. Row 27: p all stitches.
  6. Rows 28 to 36: Stockinette for 9 rows.
  7. Row 37: *k2tog, k7; rep across. 96 sts.
  8. Rows 38 to 42: k1, p1 rib.
  9. BO loosely in rib.

For the upper waist edge, pick up 72 sts along the cast-on side and work 4 rows in k1, p1 rib, then BO. This creates a neat waistband for sewing around the bunny waist.

Embroider three or five stylized flowers across the front lower portion using cranberry petals and cream centers. Space them evenly. Add tiny green leaf stitches if desired. In the image, the flowers are simple and bold.

Cranberry Lower Ruffle Layer

This is the deep cranberry layer visible under the overskirt and above the lowest cream ruffle. It gives fullness and color depth.

  1. Using cranberry, CO 88 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: k1, p1 rib.
  3. Row 5: Increase 22 sts evenly across. 110 sts.
  4. Rows 6 to 18: Stockinette for 13 rows.
  5. Row 19: p all stitches.
  6. Rows 20 to 24: Stockinette for 5 rows.
  7. BO loosely.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Gather the top edge slightly and stitch over the upper area of the cream underskirt so it peeks out at the hem center and sides, but does not cover the cream flower panel completely.

Lowest Cream Hem Ruffle

  1. Using cream, CO 120 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Garter stitch.
  3. Rows 5 to 10: Stockinette.
  4. BO loosely knitwise on RS.

Run a gathering thread through the cast-on edge and gather until it matches the lower edge circumference of the underskirt. Attach behind the cranberry lower ruffle so a soft cream frill shows below everything.

Overskirt Panels

The cranberry overskirt opens in front and reveals the cream underskirt. Make 2 front panels and 1 back panel. All pieces have cream ruffled edging after assembly.

Back Overskirt Panel

  1. Using cranberry, CO 48 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: k1, p1 rib.
  3. Row 5: Increase 8 sts evenly across. 56 sts.
  4. Rows 6 to 36: Stockinette for 31 rows.
  5. BO.

Front Overskirt Panels

Make 2 mirror pieces.

  1. Using cranberry, CO 28 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: k1, p1 rib.
  3. Row 5: Increase 6 sts evenly across. 34 sts.
  4. Rows 6 to 36: Stockinette for 31 rows.
  5. For inner opening edge shaping, on Row 37 BO 4 sts at inner front edge.
  6. Continue remaining 30 sts for 4 more rows stockinette.
  7. BO.

Lightly block the panels. Arrange them over the underskirt with a generous front opening. The back panel should sit smoothly. The front panels should slope apart enough to reveal the embroidered floral underskirt.

Cream Ruffle Edging for Overskirt

This trim is essential. It creates the soft cream ripples seen all around the overskirt. You can knit separate ruffles and sew them on.

  1. Using cream, CO 18 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 2: Garter stitch.
  3. Row 3: k1, inc across to last stitch, k1. 34 sts.
  4. Rows 4 to 8: Stockinette.
  5. BO loosely.

Make enough strips to edge the outer front edges, lower hem, and possibly the sleeve ends. Sew the gathered cast-on edge of each strip to the overskirt borders so the frill curls softly outward.

Add small cranberry embroidered flowers near the lower side sections of each front panel, echoing the image. A simple five-petal motif works well. Add a few green stem stitches.

Bodice Base

The bodice sits under the bonnet ties and above the skirt. It is mostly hidden by the cream front trim panel, but it should still fit smoothly. Make 1 back and 2 fronts in cranberry.

Back Bodice

  1. CO 24 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 6: k1, p1 rib.
  3. Rows 7 to 18: Stockinette.
  4. Row 19: BO 3 sts at start of next 2 rows for armholes. 18 sts.
  5. Rows 20 to 26: Stockinette.
  6. Row 27: k5, BO 8, k5.
  7. Row 28: p5, join yarn, p5.
  8. Rows 29 to 32: Work each side separately for neck.
  9. BO.

Front Bodice

Make 2 mirror pieces.

  1. CO 14 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 6: k1, p1 rib.
  3. Rows 7 to 18: Stockinette.
  4. Row 19: For armhole, BO 3 sts at outer edge. 11 sts.
  5. Rows 20 to 22: Continue stockinette.
  6. Row 23: Begin neck shaping at inner edge: k to last 2 sts, k2tog on right front; ssk then knit to end on left front.
  7. Repeat neck shaping every RS row 3 more times. 7 sts.
  8. Rows 24 to 30: Work straight.
  9. BO.

Seam shoulders and side seams. Try on the bunny body before attaching permanently. The bodice should fit snugly.

Front Cream Decorative Panel

This is the cream center panel with the three cranberry bows. Knit one elongated piece, then add ruffles to both edges.

  1. Using cream, CO 18 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 30: Stockinette, keeping first and last stitch in garter every row for neat edges.
  3. BO.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Make two narrow cream ruffle strips:

  1. CO 10 sts.
  2. Row 1: knit.
  3. Row 2: purl.
  4. Row 3: increase in every stitch. 20 sts.
  5. Rows 4 to 7: Stockinette.
  6. BO loosely.

Sew one ruffle to each long edge of the center panel. Then sew three tiny cranberry knitted bows vertically down the center.

Tiny Cranberry Bows

Make 6 to 8 for the entire costume: three for the front panel, one under the neckline tie, two near the lower skirt, one for the bag, and one or two for the shoes if desired.

  1. Using cranberry, CO 8 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 6: Stockinette.
  3. BO.

Wrap matching yarn tightly around the middle to form a bow. Stitch in place. Keep bows plump and small.

Sleeves

Make 2 cranberry sleeve tops and 2 cream sleeve ruffles.

Cranberry Sleeve

  1. CO 20 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 10: Stockinette.
  3. Row 11: k2tog across. 10 sts.
  4. Rows 12 to 14: Stockinette.
  5. BO.

Cream Sleeve Ruffle

  1. CO 14 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 2: garter stitch.
  3. Row 3: Increase in every stitch. 28 sts.
  4. Rows 4 to 8: Stockinette.
  5. BO loosely.

Seam the sleeve into a tiny tube, attach the cream ruffle to the lower edge, then sew each finished sleeve over the upper arm area. Add a small cranberry bow at the outer sleeve seam if you want to match the image closely.

Neck Frill and Ties

The bunny wears a cream frill at the neck with a cranberry tie bow.

  1. Using cream, CO 36 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 2: garter stitch.
  3. Row 3: increase 1 stitch in every stitch. 72 sts.
  4. Rows 4 to 6: stockinette.
  5. BO loosely.

Gather the cast-on edge gently and attach around the neckline. For the tie cords, make two narrow i-cords or twisted cords in cranberry, each about 7 inches long. Thread through the neck frill area and tie in a soft bow at center front.

Bonnet

The bonnet is deep cranberry with a cream inner frill. It is rounded and structured, sitting high around the head. The brim frames the face. Work the bonnet in three parts: crown, side band, and inner frill.

Bonnet Crown

  1. Using cranberry, CO 20 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 24: Stockinette.
  3. BO.

Seam into a short cylinder, then gather one end tightly to form the back crown. Flatten the open end slightly into an oval.

Bonnet Brim Band

  1. Using cranberry, CO 14 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 52: Work in garter stitch.
  3. BO.

Join the short ends of the band to form a ring sized to fit the open edge of the crown. Sew together, easing evenly. Then shape the front so it curves around the face.

Bonnet Inner Cream Frill

  1. Using cream, CO 28 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 2: garter stitch.
  3. Row 3: increase in every stitch. 56 sts.
  4. Rows 4 to 8: stockinette.
  5. BO loosely.

Gather the cast-on edge and sew inside the front bonnet opening. The frill should frame the face in soft waves. Add cranberry tie cords at the lower sides and knot into a bow under the chin.

Handbag

The little side handbag is cranberry with a cream flap and tiny bow. Work flat in pieces.

Bag Front and Back

  1. Using cranberry, CO 14 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 12: Stockinette.
  3. BO.

Make 2.

  4. Row 10: p.
  5. Row 11: k2tog, k6, ssk. 8 sts.
  6. BO.

Sew the gusset around the front, then attach the back. Add the cream flap at the top rear edge. Sew on a cranberry bow. For the strap, make a narrow i-cord about 7 inches long and attach to the bag sides. Stitch the bag at the bunny’s left side.

Shoes

Make 2 cranberry shoes with cream sole trim. These are decorative slip-on Mary Jane style shoes and can remain separate as shown in the image.

Sole

  1. Using cream, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: p.
  3. Row 2: k1, inc, k6, inc, k1. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3: p.
  5. Row 4: k1, inc, k8, inc, k1. 12 sts.
  6. Rows 5 to 10: Stockinette.
  7. BO.

Make 2 soles.

Upper

  1. Using cranberry, CO 12 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 8: Stockinette.
  3. Row 9: k2tog, k8, ssk. 10 sts.
  4. Row 10: p.
  5. Row 11: k2tog, k6, ssk. 8 sts.
  6. Rows 12 to 16: Stockinette.
  7. BO.

Sew the upper to the sole, easing the toe. Add a tiny strap by sewing a narrow cranberry strip across the top. Finish with a miniature bow or flower on one side. Lightly stuff the shoe toe if you want them to hold shape better.

Hedgehog Friend

The hedgehog is a small secondary toy with beige face, brown spines, a brown cap, blue vest, pale body, and tiny apple. Keep it compact and cute.

Hedgehog Front Body

  1. Using pale beige, CO 14 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Stockinette.
  3. Row 5: k1, inc, k12, inc, k1. 16 sts.
  4. Rows 6 to 12: Stockinette.

  7. BO.

Hedgehog Back

  1. Using textured brown or regular brown, CO 14 sts.
  2. Work same as front.

Seam around, stuff firmly, and shape into a pear-like oval. Embroider tiny black eyes and a little nose. Add four tiny nub feet made from short knitted tubes or embroidered padded shapes.

Hedgehog Vest

  1. Using blue, CO 18 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 10: Stockinette.
  3. BO.

Wrap around the body and tack in place like an open vest, leaving the front center visible.

Hedgehog Cap

  1. Using brown, CO 18 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 6: k1, p1 rib.
  3. Rows 7 to 10: Stockinette.
  4. Row 11: k2tog across. 9 sts.
  5. Cut yarn and thread through remaining sts.

Form a tiny beret-style cap and sew on top of the hedgehog head. Add a tiny brim strip if desired by sewing a thin folded knitted strip at the front.

Tiny Apple

  1. Using orange-red or warm apple yarn, CO 6 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Stockinette.
  3. Row 5: k2tog across. 3 sts.
  4. Cut yarn and pull through.

Seam the side, stuff with a small tuft, gather the bottom, and embroider a green stem. Stitch into the hedgehog’s hands.

Picnic Mat

The mat is cream with cranberry checks. A simple duplicate-stitch gingham effect works well.

  1. Using cream, CO 20 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 24: Garter stitch border with stockinette center as follows: k2, work in stockinette to last 2 sts, k2 on every row, while keeping first and last 2 stitches garter.
  3. BO.

After blocking, duplicate-stitch small cranberry squares in a check pattern across the center. Keep the checks aligned in rows and columns. The finished mat should be slightly rectangular with a soft homemade picnic look.

Tiny Book

  1. Using cream, CO 8 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 6: Garter stitch.
  3. BO.

Fold a small rectangle of card or felt for the book cover in brown and wrap around the cream knitted pages. Stitch closed. Place on the mat.

Dressing the Bunny

First sew the underskirt around the bunny waist, centering the embroidered flowers at the front. Then add the cranberry lower ruffle and lowest cream ruffle in layers so each edge remains visible.

Next sew the overskirt back panel and then the two front panels over the skirt base. Keep the front open in a soft V shape. Check the balance from all angles. The dress should feel symmetrical but not stiff.

Attach the bodice over the torso. Add the cream center decorative panel at the front. Sew the neck frill around the neckline and then the sleeve pieces around the shoulders and upper arms.

Position the bonnet after the ears are attached. Let the ears fall naturally under the bonnet edge. The bonnet should sit low enough to frame the face but high enough to reveal the full embroidered features.

Finally add the handbag, shoes, hedgehog, picnic mat, and book. The lower front of the dress may be anchored with a few hidden stitches to control how the layers spread.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Check that the head is centered and slightly tilted forward for the gentle expression seen in the image.
  • Place eyes very small and evenly spaced before stitching permanently.
  • Keep the nose embroidery neat and narrow, with a short vertical split line.
  • Sew the ears low enough that the bonnet can frame them naturally.
  • Add the three front bows in a straight vertical line on the cream panel.
  • Place two larger bows near the lower cranberry skirt ruffle for the same decorative balance shown in the photo.

Care Notes

  • Display indoors away from strong direct sunlight to preserve the cranberry shade.
  • Handle the bonnet, bows, and handbag gently.
  • This design works best as a decorative knitted toy rather than a rough-play item.
  • If gifting to a child, replace beads with embroidered eyes and secure all trims extra firmly.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head shape smooth and evenly stuffed.
  • Eyes tiny, level, and placed wide apart.
  • Ears attached symmetrically and hanging straight.
  • Front overskirt open enough to show the cream flower panel.
  • Bonnet centered with cream frill framing the face.
  • Three cranberry bows attached to front panel.
  • Handbag strap secured.
  • Shoes matched in size.
  • Hedgehog cap, vest, and apple complete.
  • Picnic mat and book finished for the full scene.
