Knitting Tutorial: Woodland Reindeer with Holly Bloom – Free Knitting Pattern

This knitted woodland reindeer is designed with a sweet heirloom look, soft sculpted features, and carefully layered accessories that make it feel gift-ready and collectible. With its classic Nordic sweater, blue overalls, floral holly headpiece, tiny mushroom backpack detail, matching knit hat, and miniature woodland props, this project fits beautifully into the world of handmade Christmas decor, nursery display toys, festive shelf styling, and artisan knitted doll patterns that many makers search when they want to buy premium handmade reindeer dolls or create one from scratch.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern explains how to knit the reindeer, its clothing, the removable hat, the holly bloom headpiece, the little mushroom accent, the acorn, and the tiny gingerbread companion shown beside the main doll.

The proportions are important for the final look. The head is large and rounded. The body is smaller and softly pear-shaped under the sweater and overalls. The legs are long, slim, and seated forward. The arms are medium length and lightly stuffed.

The muzzle is full and rounded, but not oversized. The nose is bold, circular, and bright red. The antlers are narrow and upright. The ears sit wide apart and angle slightly outward. The eyes are low on the head for a gentle expression.

The sweater is fitted, with a high ribbed neck, cream base, forest green yoke and cuffs, and a small reindeer motif across the chest. The overalls are sky blue with straight legs and narrow straps. The shoes are brown with cross straps and pom-pom side trim.

Skill Level

Intermediate to advanced. A careful adventurous beginner can make it too, but this pattern includes shaping, small pieces, colorwork, embroidery, seaming, and detailed finishing.

Construction Notes

The doll is made in separate parts and assembled. Head, muzzle, ears, antlers, body, arms, legs, socks, shoes, sweater, overalls, hat, flower, leaves, mushroom, acorn, and gingerbread are all worked separately.

Most pieces can be knit flat and seamed, or in the round if you prefer. To match the smooth compact look in the image, the narrow pieces such as legs, arms, antlers, and hat are best worked in the round.

Stuff firmly but gradually. The face should be very smooth, especially around the muzzle join and eye placement.

Head

Main Head

  1. Using light taupe, CO 12 sts. Divide evenly for working in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: knit.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in each st. 24 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: knit.
  5. Rnd 4: (k1, inc) around. 36 sts.
  6. Rnd 5: knit.
  7. Rnd 6: (k2, inc) around. 48 sts.
  8. Rnd 7: knit.
  9. Rnd 8: (k3, inc) around. 60 sts.
  10. Rnds 9–20: knit 12 rnds.

Insert safety eyes between rnds 12 and 13, spaced 12 stitches apart, centered so the muzzle will fit directly beneath them. Do not fasten backs until the muzzle placement is checked.

  1. Rnd 21: (k8, k2tog) around. 54 sts.
  2. Rnd 22: knit.
  3. Rnd 23: (k7, k2tog) around. 48 sts.
  4. Rnd 24: knit.
  5. Rnd 25: (k6, k2tog) around. 42 sts.
  6. Rnd 26: knit.
  7. Rnd 27: (k5, k2tog) around. 36 sts.

Begin stuffing firmly. Shape the cheeks with your fingers as you fill.

  4. Rnd 31: (k1, k2tog) around. 12 sts.
  5. Break yarn, thread through remaining stitches, pull tight, and close.

Muzzle

  1. Using cream, CO 8 sts and join for a small oval.
  2. Rnd 1: knit.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in each st. 16 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: knit.
  5. Rnd 4: (k1, inc) around. 24 sts.
  6. Rnd 5: knit.

  9. Rnd 12: (k2, k2tog) around. 24 sts.
  10. Rnd 13: knit.
  11. BO loosely, leaving a long tail.

Stuff lightly so the muzzle stays plump but not hard. Stitch the muzzle to the lower center of the face, covering the bottom eye line area and ending about 5 rounds above the neck seam. Add tiny extra stuffing just before closing the last quarter.

Nose

  1. Using bright red, CO 6 sts and join.
  2. Rnd 1: kfb in each st. 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: knit.
  4. Rnd 3: (k1, inc) around. 18 sts.

With taupe-brown thread, embroider a short vertical line from the base of the nose down about 3/8 inch / 1 cm. Add a tiny split stitch at the bottom for a subtle mouth shape.

Ears

Make 2 outer ears in taupe and 2 inner ears in cream.

Make 2. Each antler has one main stem and one side tine, with a softly forked look. They should be slender, upright, and slightly flexible.

  1. Using taupe, CO 6 sts and join.
  2. Rnd 1–10: knit.

Side tine:

  1. Move 3 stitches to a holder.

  3. Thread yarn through sts and close.

Main tip:

  1. Return to remaining 3 sts.

  3. Thread yarn through sts and close.

Make a second antler as mirror image by placing the side tine on the opposite side. Lightly stuff the base half only, or insert thin wire into the lower stem for stronger shaping. Sew antlers on top of head with about 1 inch / 2.5 cm space between them.

  4. Rnd 5: (k1, k2tog) around. 8 sts.

Sew to lower back before dressing the doll.

Sweater

The sweater is separate and fitted. It has a tall ribbed neck, cream body, green sleeves, and a stranded yoke-style band with small reindeer motifs. The look in the photo is neat and compact, so keep floats loose but controlled.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check that the head tilts only very slightly forward. A centered head makes the reindeer look calm and sweet. The ears should sit wide, with the inner cream panel clearly visible.

Use a strong thread to sculpt tiny eye corners if needed. Pull very gently from the back of the head to create a soft inward set beside each eye. Do not over-sculpt. The expression in the image is smooth and innocent, not sharply defined.

Brush the knitted muzzle lightly with clean fingertips to even the stuffing. Adjust the nose so it sits centered and raised. The antlers should stand upright, with a little natural asymmetry.

Care Notes

  • Display indoors only.
  • Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight to protect red and green tones.
  • If giving to a child, replace safety eyes with embroidered eyes for added safety.
  • Small props are decorative and best kept with supervised display pieces.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Is the muzzle centered and evenly stuffed?
  • Are both antlers balanced but not perfectly identical?
  • Do the ears angle outward?
  • Does the sweater neck sit high and neat?
  • Are the overall straps even?
  • Do the socks show below the overalls?
  • Are the shoe pom-poms attached firmly?
  • Is the flower placed beside the right antler?
  • Does the mushroom accent peek from behind the shoulder?

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Spot clean with a soft cloth and cool water. Use only a tiny amount of mild soap if necessary. Do not soak the doll, since the stuffing and shaped facial areas may lose form.

Lay flat on a towel and reshape by hand. Let every piece dry fully before storing. For long-term preservation, keep the doll in a breathable cotton bag or on a clean shelf away from humidity, dust, and heavy pressure.

Avoid hanging the doll by the antlers or straps. Store the hat and props separately if needed. If the pom-poms flatten over time, fluff them gently with a clean needle tip or small soft brush.
