Knitting Tutorial: Dachshund Dog Amigurumi in Yellow Raincoat – Free Knitting Pattern

This cheerful dachshund amigurumi is knitted as a soft puppy doll with a long brown head, floppy ears, bright glassy eyes, a rounded black nose, blue-and-white striped overalls, a sunny yellow raincoat, blue sandals with tiny duck charms, a matching blue shoulder bag, and a removable yellow rain hat. Small nautical details, including anchor buttons and sailboat motifs, make the finished toy look playful, rainy-day ready, and full of character.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern creates a seated-style knitted dachshund doll with a soft amigurumi body and sewn-on clothing. The finished toy is shaped with firm stuffing, short-row-style placement, and detailed seaming. Most pieces are worked flat in stockinette stitch, then seamed, stuffed, and embroidered to match the pictured doll.

  • Finished height: about 13 inches from top of head to sandal soles.
  • Finished width: about 5 inches across the coat sleeves.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Main technique: flat knitting, increases, decreases, seaming, embroidery, and simple color striping.
  • Construction style: separate head, muzzle, body, legs, arms, ears, clothing, hat, bag, and accessories.

Materials

  • Worsted or DK-weight yarn in warm medium brown for the dachshund head, legs, and ears.
  • Light beige yarn for the chest, hands, foot pads, and small facial highlights.
  • Bright yellow yarn for the raincoat and rain hat.
  • Sky blue yarn for overalls, bag, sandals, and rain details.
  • White yarn for stripes and sailboat details.
  • Navy yarn for bag strap, sailboat base, and small outlines.
  • Small amounts of red yarn or embroidery thread for flags on the sailboats.
  • Small amounts of gray yarn or embroidery thread for raindrops on the hat.
  • Black yarn for mouth dots and nose shaping if not using a safety nose.
  • Pair of 3.0 mm knitting needles for firm amigurumi fabric.
  • Pair of 3.25 mm knitting needles for the coat and hat if you want slightly softer drape.
  • Two 10 mm safety eyes or glossy black buttons for eyes.
  • One 14 mm oval black safety nose, or black felt nose sewn securely.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Four small blue buttons for raincoat front.
  • Two small tan or wood-look buttons for overall straps.
  • Embroidery needle.
  • Stitch markers or scrap yarn.
  • Optional: two tiny yellow duck buttons for sandals.

Abbreviations

  • CO: cast on.
  • BO: bind off.
  • K: knit.
  • P: purl.
  • St / sts: stitch / stitches.
  • RS: right side.
  • WS: wrong side.
  • Kfb: knit into the front and back of the same stitch.
  • Pfb: purl into the front and back of the same stitch.
  • K2tog: knit 2 stitches together.
  • P2tog: purl 2 stitches together.
  • SSK: slip 1 knitwise, slip 1 knitwise, knit slipped stitches together through back loops.
  • St st: stockinette stitch, knit RS rows and purl WS rows.
  • Garter st: knit every row.

Gauge

Gauge is important because the toy needs a dense fabric that will not show stuffing. With 3.0 mm needles in stockinette stitch, aim for about 7 stitches and 9 rows per inch after light blocking. Do not stretch the fabric while measuring. A tighter gauge is better than a loose gauge for this design.

  • Main toy gauge: 28 sts and 36 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.
  • Raincoat gauge: 26 sts and 34 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.
  • Hat gauge: 26 sts and 34 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

If your stitches look loose, go down one needle size. If the fabric is too stiff to shape smoothly, go up one needle size only for the raincoat and hat. Keep the body, head, and limbs tightly knitted.

Helpful Notes Before Starting

  • The dachshund head is intentionally long, rounded, and slightly oval, with a tapered muzzle added separately.
  • The ears are long, flat, and sewn to the sides of the head so they hang downward beside the face.
  • The body is smaller than the head, because the outfit and raincoat add visual bulk.
  • The overalls are knitted in blue and white stripes directly as a separate garment panel and sewn around the body.
  • The yellow raincoat is worked as a simple open-front coat with sleeves, collar, pockets, and button details.
  • The bag is knitted separately and attached with a navy-and-white diagonal strap.
  • The rain hat is a shallow round cap with a brim and embroidered blue raindrops.

  23. Row 41: K2tog across. 10 sts.
  24. Cut yarn, leaving a 16-inch tail. Thread through remaining sts and pull gently, but do not close completely until stuffed.

Fold the head with right sides together and seam the back from the cast-on edge toward the gathered top. Turn right side out. Insert the safety eyes later after the muzzle is placed, so the face can be balanced correctly.

Long Dachshund Muzzle

The muzzle is a separate tapered oval piece. It sits low on the face and points forward, giving the dachshund its recognizable long nose. Use medium brown yarn.

  1. CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1 RS: K all sts.
  3. Row 2 WS: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: Kfb, K6, Kfb. 10 sts.

  13. Row 20: P all sts.
  14. Row 21: SSK, K6, K2tog. 8 sts.
  15. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Place the muzzle on the lower front of the head, centered under the eyes. Lightly stuff the muzzle before closing the final seam. Sew around the edge with tiny mattress stitches, keeping the top of the muzzle smooth and the lower part slightly rounded.

Nose Patch and Nose Placement

Use black yarn if knitting the nose, or use a safety nose. The pictured dog has a smooth oval black nose placed at the very front of the long muzzle.

  1. With black yarn, CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: Kfb, K4, Kfb. 8 sts.
  5. Row 4: P all sts.
  6. Row 5: SSK, K4, K2tog. 6 sts.
  7. Row 6: P all sts.
  8. BO all sts.

Gather the edges slightly to make an oval. Sew the nose to the front tip of the muzzle. Embroider two tiny black nostril dots with 3 small vertical stitches each. Add one short vertical mouth line below the nose, about 3 rows long.

Eye Placement and Facial Highlights

Place the eyes about 9 rows above the top of the muzzle and about 12 stitches apart. The dachshund expression should look soft and slightly curious, with the eyes sitting under a gentle brow line.

  • Insert or sew the left eye first, then match the right eye at the same height.
  • Use beige yarn to embroider a small crescent highlight around the lower outside edge of each eye.
  • Use medium brown yarn to make 3 short brow stitches above each eye.
  • Do not pull the brow stitches too tight, because the face should stay rounded.

Floppy Ears

Make 2 ears with medium brown yarn. The ears are long and rounded, hanging down beside the face. They should be slightly flatter than the head and lightly shaped with a smooth edge.

  1. CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1 RS: K all sts.
  3. Row 2 WS: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: Kfb, K6, Kfb. 10 sts.

  6. Row 5: Kfb, K8, Kfb. 12 sts.
  7. Row 6: P all sts.
  8. Row 7: Kfb, K10, Kfb. 14 sts.
  9. Rows 8-24: Work stockinette stitch. 14 sts.
  10. Row 25: SSK, K10, K2tog. 12 sts.
  11. Row 26: P all sts.
  12. Row 27: SSK, K8, K2tog. 10 sts.
  13. Row 28: P all sts.

  15. Row 30: P all sts.
  16. Row 31: SSK, K4, K2tog. 6 sts.
  17. BO all sts.

For a thicker ear, knit a second matching panel for each ear, place two panels wrong sides together, and seam around the edge. For a lighter ear, use one panel only and work one row of single-thread whipstitch around the edge. Sew the ears to the head starting at eye height and ending near the cheek line.

Body Base

The body is mostly hidden under the striped overalls and yellow raincoat. Use beige yarn for the upper chest and medium brown yarn for the lower body where it peeks through under the shorts.

  1. With beige yarn, CO 16 sts.
  2. Row 1 RS: K all sts.
  3. Row 2 WS: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: Kfb in each st across. 32 sts.

  14. Row 32: P all sts.
  15. Row 33: K1, K2tog, repeat across. 14 sts.
  16. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull to gather, and seam back.

Stuff the body firmly but keep the top slightly flat where the head will sit. The head should overlap the body slightly, creating the compact doll shape visible under the raincoat collar.

Legs

Make 2 legs. The legs are short dachshund-style legs with brown lower sections and beige feet. The blue sandals will cover much of the foot, so keep the foot shape rounded and slightly wide.

  1. With beige yarn, CO 10 sts.
  2. Row 1 RS: K all sts.
  3. Row 2 WS: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: Kfb, K8, Kfb. 12 sts.

  6. Rows 5-10: Work stockinette stitch. 12 sts.
  7. Change to medium brown yarn.
  8. Rows 11-24: Work stockinette stitch. 12 sts.
  9. Row 25: K2tog across. 6 sts.
  10. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed, and seam the back of the leg.

Stuff each leg lightly. Leave the top slightly open and flat for sewing under the body. Sew the legs to the lower body with the feet pointing forward. The legs should sit close together, matching the narrow stance shown in the image.

Arms

Make 2 arms. The arms have beige paws and are covered by the yellow raincoat sleeves. Only the small hands show at the sleeve ends.

  1. With beige yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1 RS: K all sts.
  3. Row 2 WS: P all sts.
  4. Rows 3-8: Work stockinette stitch. 8 sts.
  5. Change to medium brown yarn if you want a hidden upper arm, or keep beige for a lighter hand look.
  6. Rows 9-20: Work stockinette stitch. 8 sts.
  7. Row 21: K2tog across. 4 sts.
  8. Cut yarn and pull through remaining sts.

Seam each arm from fingertip to shoulder. Stuff lightly. Use brown or beige yarn to embroider 3 short claw lines on the visible paw end, spacing each line 1 stitch apart.

Blue-and-White Striped Overalls

The overalls are knitted as a fitted front-and-back garment. The body area is blue and white striped, with blue shorts, white stripe rows, and two vertical blue straps. The center front includes a small sailboat motif.

  7. Repeat the stripe sequence until back panel matches the front panel before the bib.
  8. Work 6 rows in sky blue only.
  9. BO all sts.

Overall Shorts Leg Panels

Make 2 small blue short cuffs. These sit at the lower edge of the overalls and make the separate short legs seen in the image.

  1. With sky blue yarn, CO 18 sts.
  2. Rows 1-4: K all sts for garter edge.
  3. Rows 5-12: Work stockinette stitch.
  4. BO all sts.

Seam each short cuff into a small tube. Slide over each leg before final leg attachment if possible. Sew the upper edge of each cuff to the lower edge of the overall body so the shorts look connected.

Overall Assembly

  • Wrap the front panel around the belly with the bib centered on the chest.
  • Place the back panel behind the body and seam the side edges using blue yarn.
  • Cross the straps over the shoulders or sew them straight upward, depending on the body fit.
  • Sew one tan anchor-style button at the top of each strap on the front bib.
  • Keep the bib visible above the raincoat opening.

Mini Sailboat Motif on Overalls

Use duplicate stitch or embroidery on the center front of the bib. The boat should be small, neat, and placed about 4 rows below the strap buttons.

  • With navy yarn, embroider a 5-stitch curved boat base.
  • With white yarn, embroider a triangular sail about 5 rows tall.
  • With sky blue or light gray yarn, add a second smaller sail beside it.
  • With red yarn, stitch a tiny flag at the mast top using 2 diagonal stitches.
  • With navy yarn, add a straight mast line from boat base to flag.

Yellow Raincoat Body

The raincoat is the most visible garment. It is bright yellow, open in the front, has a soft collar, sleeves, button bands, pockets, and a slightly long coat length. Work with yellow yarn and 3.25 mm needles.

Raincoat Side Seams

Place fronts and back with right sides facing. Sew shoulder seams first. Sew side seams from lower hem upward for 16 rows, leaving the upper opening for sleeves. The front should stay open and frame the striped overalls.

Raincoat Sleeves

Make 2 sleeves. The sleeves are short and roomy, ending above the visible beige paws. They should angle slightly downward when attached.

  1. With yellow yarn, CO 18 sts.
  2. Rows 1-4: K all sts for garter cuff.

  5. BO all sts.

Sew one pocket to each lower coat front. Place the pockets about 4 rows above the hem and 3 stitches away from the front opening. Sew around the sides and bottom, leaving the top edge open for a real pocket look.

Raincoat Buttons

Sew two small blue buttons down the viewer’s left front side of the raincoat. Place the first button about 8 rows below the collar and the second button about 7 rows below the first. Use matching blue thread or yarn to secure them firmly.

  • The buttons are decorative, so the coat does not need buttonholes.
  • Keep the front open enough to show the striped overalls.
  • Use a double knot inside the coat, away from the doll’s body.

Blue Shoulder Bag

The shoulder bag is a small square blue pouch with a dark strap crossing the body diagonally. It rests against the lower right side of the raincoat. Use sky blue yarn.

Bag Front and Back

Sew the flap to the top back edge of the bag and fold it forward. Tack the lower corners of the flap to the front.

Bag Strap

  1. With navy yarn, CO 4 sts.
  2. Work garter stitch for 68 rows, or until the strap crosses from the dog’s left shoulder to the right hip.
  3. BO all sts.

For the white stripe visible along the strap, embroider a running stitch down the center with white yarn. Sew one strap end near the left shoulder of the coat and the other end to the top corner of the bag. Let the strap angle across the chest.

Sailboat on Bag

  • Use navy yarn for a 5-stitch boat base.
  • Use white yarn for one triangular sail, 4 rows tall.
  • Use light gray yarn for a smaller second sail.
  • Use red yarn for a tiny flag.
  • Place the motif centered on the front of the bag.

Sew each strap across the top of the foot, about 4 rows back from the toe tip. Curve the strap slightly so the beige foot remains visible in the center opening. Add a tiny yellow duck button or embroider a small duck with yellow and black thread on the outer side of each sandal.

Yellow Rain Hat

The hat is a separate round yellow rain hat with a shallow dome, brim, and blue raindrop embroidery. It sits beside the doll in the image, but you can make it wearable if desired.

  12. Row 19: K3, K2tog, repeat across. 32 sts.
  13. Row 20: P all sts.
  14. BO loosely.

Seam the crown at the back. Gather the cast-on center gently to close the top. Stuff very lightly while shaping, then remove most stuffing if the hat should remain hollow and wearable.

Hat Brim

  1. CO 56 sts with yellow yarn.
  2. Rows 1-4: K all sts.
  3. Rows 5-8: Work stockinette stitch.
  4. Rows 9-10: K all sts.
  5. BO loosely.

Seam the short ends of the brim to make a ring. Sew the inner edge of the brim around the lower edge of the crown. Let the brim flare outward. Use tiny stitches so the brim keeps a smooth rounded shape.

Hat Raindrops

  • Use sky blue embroidery thread or thin yarn.
  • Make 7 small teardrops around the crown.
  • Each raindrop uses 2 diagonal stitches meeting at the bottom point and 1 short stitch to fill the center.
  • Space the raindrops unevenly for a natural rainy look.

Small White Cloud Accessory

The small cloud is optional but matches the rainy theme. It is a soft white knitted shape with tiny blue raindrops hanging below.

  1. With white yarn, CO 18 sts.
  2. Row 1 RS: K all sts.
  3. Row 2 WS: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: K3, Kfb, K4, Kfb, K4, Kfb, K3. 21 sts.

  10. Row 15: K2tog, K15, SSK. 17 sts.
  11. BO all sts.

Knit a second matching cloud panel. Place wrong sides together, seam almost all the way around, lightly stuff, then close. Embroider two black eyes with 2 stitches each and a tiny smile with one curved stitch. Add three blue raindrops below the cloud using small yarn loops or embroidered teardrop stitches.

Small Paper Boat Accessory

The cream boat beside the doll can be made as a tiny knitted folded-look accessory. Use cream yarn and keep the fabric flat.

  1. CO 18 sts.
  2. Rows 1-6: K all sts in garter stitch.
  3. Row 7: K2tog, K14, K2tog. 16 sts.
  4. Row 8: K all sts.
  5. Row 9: K2tog, K12, K2tog. 14 sts.
  6. Row 10: K all sts.
  7. BO all sts.

Fold the piece in half lengthwise. Sew the lower edge together. Fold the two upper corners outward and tack them with cream yarn to suggest a paper boat shape. Add one raised center triangle by embroidering a V shape across the front.

Stuffing and Shaping Guide

Stuffing controls the entire appearance of the dachshund. The head should be firm and rounded, the muzzle should project forward, and the body should be stable but not stretched. Add small pinches of fiberfill at a time instead of pushing in one large piece.

  • Head: stuff firmly at the cheeks, forehead, and top. Keep the eye area smooth.
  • Muzzle: stuff lightly at the front and more firmly at the base where it joins the face.
  • Body: stuff firmly enough to support the raincoat and bag.
  • Legs: stuff lightly so they remain short and flexible.
  • Arms: stuff very lightly, especially near the paws.
  • Ears: do not stuff heavily. They should hang flat and soft.

Joining the Main Doll

  1. Place the head on top of the body with the muzzle facing forward and slightly downward.
  2. Use medium brown yarn to sew the head to the body in a full circle around the neck.
  3. Sew around the neck twice for stability.
  4. Attach the legs under the body, spacing them about 4 stitches apart.
  5. Attach the arms at the upper sides of the body before putting on the raincoat, or tack them inside the sleeves afterward.
  6. Put the overalls on the body and secure the side seams.
  7. Put the raincoat over the arms and body, then sew hidden tacking stitches at the shoulders.
  8. Add the bag strap diagonally across the chest after the coat is in place.

Facial Embroidery Details

Use small, controlled stitches for the face. The dachshund in the image has a gentle handmade expression, so the details should look soft rather than harsh.

  • Add beige highlights under and beside each eye.
  • Add 3 short brown brow stitches above each eye.
  • Add two tiny black nostril dots on the nose.
  • Add one short black mouth line under the nose.
  • Optional: add two tiny cheek stitches in slightly darker brown near the muzzle sides.

Button and Nautical Details

The small decorative details give this doll its rainy seaside style. Use securely sewn buttons and embroidered motifs, especially if the toy will be displayed or gently handled.

  • Sew two tan anchor buttons to the overall straps.
  • Sew two blue buttons to the yellow raincoat front.
  • Embroider one sailboat on the overall bib.
  • Embroider one sailboat on the blue bag.
  • Add a navy-and-white strap across the raincoat.
  • Add tiny duck details to the sandals.
  • Add blue raindrops to the yellow hat and white cloud.

Fit Adjustments

Because amigurumi tension can vary, test each garment on the doll before final sewing. The overalls should hug the body without pulling the stitches open. The raincoat should sit loosely enough to show the striped bib and straps at the front.

  • If the overalls are too tight, add 2 rows to each side seam using mattress stitch with blue yarn.
  • If the coat is too wide, overlap the front bands by 2 stitches before adding buttons.
  • If the sleeves are too long, fold the cuff inward by 2 rows and tack it inside.
  • If the hat is too large, run a gathering thread around the inside brim and pull slightly.
  • If the bag strap is too short, add 6-10 garter rows before binding off.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the full doll from the front before fastening final knots. The head should be centered, the muzzle should point forward, the ears should hang evenly, and the raincoat should frame the overalls. Sew any loose garment edges with hidden stitches.

  • Brush the ears gently with your fingers to smooth the knitted surface.
  • Adjust the bag so it rests on the lower side of the coat.
  • Make sure both sandals sit flat and face forward.
  • Secure all buttons and accessories with multiple passes of thread.
  • Trim yarn tails only after checking every seam.

Care Notes

Spot cleaning is best for this knitted dachshund because of the buttons, embroidery, and shaped accessories. Use a cool damp cloth and gently press the area that needs cleaning. Avoid rubbing the face, muzzle, embroidered sailboats, and raindrop details.

  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, or decorative charms are attached.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Reshape the ears, coat, and hat while damp if needed.
  • Let the doll air dry flat on a towel.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished dachshund away from direct sunlight to protect the bright yellow coat and blue accessories. If the doll is used as decor, dust it lightly with a soft brush every few weeks. Keep the hat, cloud, and paper boat accessory together in a small breathable cotton bag when not displayed.

  • Use acid-free tissue if storing long term.
  • Keep away from high humidity to protect buttons and stuffing.
  • Refresh the shape by gently pressing the coat hem and hat brim with your fingers.
  • Do not iron directly on the toy or accessories.
  • Check stitched buttons and charms regularly if the doll is handled often.

Your knitted dachshund in a yellow raincoat is now complete, with its striped overalls, nautical bag, rain hat, sandals, cloud, and tiny boat ready for a cheerful rainy-day display.
