Pattern Overview

This pattern creates a seated or lying-style monkey doll with a large rounded head, small body, long slim arms, short legs, a little tapered tail, and removable dress details. The shaping is built with tight single crochet stitches so the doll keeps a smooth amigurumi form.

The monkey in the image has a warm brown outer head and body, a cream face panel, cream inner ears, cream hands and feet, and soft black embroidered features. The dress is coral pink with white dots, narrow white shoulder straps, a white upper trim, and a scalloped white lace edge.

  • Monkey doll: about 9.5 inches tall from head top to feet when made with sport weight cotton yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.
  • Head width: about 3.6 inches across the widest part.
  • Dress width at hem: about 5.2 inches across when laid flat.
  • Sun hat: about 4.6 inches across the brim.

Gauge and Stitch Texture

Use a tight amigurumi gauge so the stuffing does not show. With a 2.25 mm hook, 8 sc rounds over 8 sc should measure about 1 inch by 1 inch. The image shows firm, small, even stitches with visible horizontal rows, so avoid loose tension.

Stuff the head firmly to keep the round shape. Stuff the body medium-firm so the dress can sit smoothly over it. The arms, legs, and tail should be lightly stuffed to keep them soft and slightly flexible.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work most doll parts in continuous spiral rounds unless a section says to join.
  • Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round.
  • The face panel is made separately and sewn onto the front of the brown head.
  • The ears are layered pieces with cream inner ears and brown outer borders.
  • The dress is worked from the waist downward, then straps and trims are added.
  • White polka dots are embroidered or crocheted as tiny raised circles and sewn evenly across the skirt.

  2. R28: dec 6 times. 6 sts.

FO, leaving a long tail. Weave through the front loops of the final 6 stitches and pull closed. Hide the yarn end inside the head.

Cream Face Panel

The monkey has a cream heart-like face patch with a rounded lower muzzle and two high cheek curves under the brown forehead. This piece is sewn onto the front of the head after the head is fully stuffed.

Use cream yarn. Work in joined rounds to keep the shape neat. Chain 9 to begin.

  1. R1: Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sc 7, 3 sc in last ch, turn to work along opposite side, sc 6, inc in last ch. 18 sts.
  2. R2: inc, sc 6, inc 3 times, sc 6, inc 2 times. 24 sts.

FO with a long sewing tail. Pin the face panel to the lower front of the head. The top edge should sit around R10-R12 of the head, with the lower curve ending around R21. Sew around the edge with small whip stitches, keeping the panel smooth and flat.

Brown Forehead Scallop Detail

The image shows a brown hairline dipping down in soft rounded points above the cream face. This is added as surface crochet and small sewn stitches after the face panel is attached.

  • With brown yarn, insert the hook near the top left of the cream face patch.
  • Surface sl st across the upper edge of the cream patch for 8 stitches.
  • Make a small dip by stitching downward 2 rounds, then back upward 2 rounds.
  • Continue 7 surface sl sts across the center forehead edge.
  • Make a second dip downward 2 rounds and back upward 2 rounds.
  • Finish with 8 surface sl sts to the right side of the face patch.

Use the yarn needle to soften the edges of the dips with 2 or 3 short brown embroidery stitches. This creates the rounded fringe shape visible in the image.

Ears

Make two ears. Each ear has a cream inner circle, a brown outer rim, and a soft folded shape. The ears are sewn to the sides of the head at a slight upward angle.

Inner Ear in Cream

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. 6 sts.

White Bodice Trim

Attach white yarn at the top left front of the bodice. Work sc evenly along the top edge, placing 1 sc in each stitch and 1 extra sc at each corner. FO and weave in ends. This creates the thin white line seen above the pink dress.

  11. Add sandals to the feet after the legs are attached.
  12. Finish with the hair bow, head flower, facial embroidery, bag, hat, acorns, and leaf.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Before sewing everything permanently, pin all parts in place and check the doll from the front. The monkey should have a large rounded head, small body, wide dress, slim arms, and feet visible below the lace hem. Adjust the ears so they sit evenly on both sides.

Use small, tight stitches when attaching parts. Match yarn colors whenever possible so the seams disappear. After the face is embroidered, gently shape the cheeks by pressing the cream panel flat against the stuffing.

For the final look, place the yellow bow high on the head and the small flower closer to one ear. The dress flower should sit on the viewer’s right side of the bodice. The white dots should look scattered, not arranged in stiff straight rows.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not soak the doll if safety eyes, glued pieces, or delicate appliqués are used.
  • Press with a towel to remove extra moisture.
  • Air dry flat in a shaded place.
  • Keep the hat brim flat while drying.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is firmly stuffed and round.
  • The cream face panel is smooth and centered.
  • The ears are even and slightly folded at the base.
  • The dress flares outward and covers the body neatly.
  • The lace hem sits below the pink skirt edge.
  • All white polka dots are sewn securely.
  • The sandals are attached evenly on both feet.
  • The bow, flowers, bag, hat, acorns, and leaf are complete.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the monkey amigurumi in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Strong sunlight may fade the coral pink dress, yellow hat, and blue bag over time. If the doll is used for display, place it on a clean fabric surface instead of rough wood.

To refresh the shape, gently roll the head and body between your palms. Do not pull the ears, bow, tail, or dress hem. Small appliqués can loosen with rough handling, so check the flowers and dots occasionally and re-stitch them if needed.

If gifting this doll to a child, embroider the eyes instead of using safety eyes and sew every accessory firmly to the doll. For display use, the removable sun hat, bag, acorns, and leaf can stay separate to match the styled handmade scene.
