Crochet Tutorial: Frog Amigurumi with Duck Swim Ring – Free Crochet Pattern

This cheerful crochet frog amigurumi is dressed for a sunny beach day with blue and white striped shorts, a matching sailor-style collar, blue sandals with red starfish accents, and a bright yellow duck swim ring around the waist. The set also includes a striped sun hat, a small beach bag with shell detail, a mini duck toy, and a colorful beach ball.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

The finished frog measures about 14 inches tall from the top of the eye bumps to the bottom of the sandals when made with medium weight yarn and a 3.0 mm crochet hook. The body is long and slim, the head is wide and rounded, the arms and legs are thin, and the swim ring sits around the waist like the reference image.

  • Frog height: about 14 inches
  • Head width: about 4.5 inches
  • Swim ring width: about 6.5 inches across
  • Hat diameter: about 5 inches
  • Beach ball: about 2 inches wide
  • Mini duck: about 2.75 inches long

Skill Level

This pattern is written for confident beginners and intermediate crocheters. Most pieces use simple amigurumi stitches, but the project has many small details. Work slowly, count every round, and stuff each piece firmly enough to hold the long frog shape without making the stitches stretch open.

Gauge and Crochet Style

Gauge is not strict, but the fabric must be tight and smooth. In the image, the stitches are compact, even, and rounded, with no visible stuffing. For the closest look, use a hook smaller than the yarn label recommends. A 3.0 mm hook with medium weight cotton gives a neat amigurumi texture.

Work most pieces in continuous spiral rounds unless a section says to join. Mark the first stitch of every round. Stuff the head and body firmly, the limbs moderately, and the toes lightly. The sandals and clothing should sit over the limbs rather than disappear into the stuffing.

Important Construction Notes

  • The frog has a wide head with a soft horizontal mouth ridge across the front.
  • The eyes are raised green domes with white lower eyeballs and black pupils placed high and close together.
  • The body is slim and mostly covered by the blue and white striped romper.
  • The yellow duck swim ring is a thick oval tube sewn around the waist, with a duck head at the front center.
  • The arms are long and thin, ending in four long webbed fingers.
  • The legs are extra long, thin, and slightly angled outward.
  • The feet have rounded toes visible through blue slide sandals.
  • The hat, bag, mini duck, and beach ball are separate accessories made to match the beach theme.

Frog Head

Use bright frog green yarn and the 3.0 mm hook. The head is worked as a flattened oval sphere. Stuff firmly as you work. Do not overstuff the front because the mouth ridge needs to sit smoothly across the face.

Stuff the head firmly, shaping it into a wide oval. Flatten the lower front slightly with your fingers. FO with a long tail. Leave the opening available if you prefer sewing the neck into it later. The head should be wider than the body and slightly tilted when attached.

White Eye Bases

Make two in white. These sit under the green eye domes and create the large sleepy frog eyes visible in the image. They should look like soft white half-ovals peeking out under the green lids.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)

FO with a long tail. Do not stuff heavily. Add a very small amount of stuffing only under the center so the white piece has a gentle dome. Insert one 8 mm black safety eye into each white eye base between R3 and R4, slightly toward the upper inner side.

Green Eye Domes

Make two in frog green. These are the rounded green top lids that sit above and partly around the white eye bases. They create the raised frog-eye silhouette at the top of the head.

FO with a long tail. Place each green dome over the upper edge of a white eye base so the white remains visible below. Sew the green edge to the white piece first. Then sew the completed eyes onto the top front of the head between R8 and R15, with only 2 stitches between them.

Frog Mouth Ridge

The frog in the image has a wide raised mouth line that runs across the face. Use frog green and crochet a soft curved strip. This strip should be sewn across the front of the head just below the eyes.

  1. Ch 35.
  2. Row 1: starting in second ch from hook, sc 34. (34)
  3. Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc 4, hdc 6, dc 14, hdc 6, sc 4. (34)
  4. Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc across. (34)

FO with a long sewing tail. Pin the strip across the face in a shallow smile shape. The ends should angle slightly upward toward the sides of the head. Sew only the upper and lower edges, leaving the ridge softly raised. Add a short black curved stitch under the center if you want a deeper mouth shadow.

Frog Body

Use frog green for the body base. The body is narrow because most of it will be covered by the striped romper and the swim ring. Stuff firmly enough that the frog can support the head.

Stuff the body firmly. FO with a long tail. Sew the body to the lower center of the head. Angle the head very slightly backward, as shown in the reference, so the eyes look upward and the mouth ridge sits forward.

Long Frog Arms

Make two in frog green. The arms are slim and long, reaching down near the swim ring and shorts. Stuff only lightly so they hang naturally along the sides.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: (sc 1, inc) 3 times. (9)
  3. R3-R5: sc around. (9)
  4. R6: (sc 1, dec) 3 times. (6)
  5. R7-R25: sc around. (6)

Do not close yet. Lightly stuff the upper half only. Flatten the top opening and sc through both layers across 3 sts. FO with a long tail for sewing. The hands will be added separately at the lower end.

Webbed Frog Hands

Make two hands in frog green. Each hand has four long rounded fingers, matching the playful webbed look in the image. Use a 2.5 mm hook if you want tighter fingers.

Fingers

Make eight fingers total.

  1. R1: 5 sc in MR. (5)
  2. R2-R6: sc around. (5)

For each hand, make four fingers. On the first three fingers, FO. On the fourth finger, do not fasten off. Join the fingers together for the palm.

Palm Joining

  1. R1: With the fourth finger on hook, sc 2 on fourth finger, sc 2 on third finger, sc 2 on second finger, sc 5 around first finger, sc 3 on second finger, sc 3 on third finger, sc 3 on fourth finger. (20)

  3. R3: (sc 2, dec) 5 times. (15)
  4. R4: (sc 1, dec) 5 times. (10)
  5. R5: dec 5 times. (5)

FO with a tail. Sew each hand to the lower end of an arm. Position the fingers pointing downward and slightly outward. Sew the completed arms to the body sides under the collar area, around body R18-R20.

Long Frog Legs

Make two in frog green. The legs are longer than the arms and remain visible below the striped shorts. Stuff lightly but evenly so they hold a slim tube shape.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: (sc 1, inc) 3 times. (9)
  3. R3-R28: sc around. (9)

Stuff lightly as you go. Flatten the top opening and sc through both layers across 4 sts. FO with a long tail. Attach the legs under the body, about 4 stitches apart, angled outward. The shorts will be worked separately and placed over this area.

Frog Feet and Toes

Make two feet in frog green. Each foot has three visible rounded toes at the front, because the sandals in the image leave the toes open. The toes should point slightly forward and upward.

Toes

Make six toes total.

  1. R1: 5 sc in MR. (5)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (10)
  3. R3-R5: sc around. (10)

For each foot, make three toes. FO the first two toes. Do not FO the third toe.

Foot Joining

  1. R1: With third toe on hook, sc 5 on third toe, sc 5 on second toe, sc 10 around first toe, sc 5 on second toe, sc 5 on third toe. (30)
  2. R2-R3: sc around. (30)
  3. R4: sc 8, dec 7 times, sc 8. (23)
  4. R5: sc 7, dec 5 times, sc 6. (18)
  5. R6: sc around. (18)
  6. R7: (sc 1, dec) 6 times. (12)
  7. R8: dec 6 times. (6)

Stuff the toe area lightly and the heel moderately. FO and close. Sew each foot to the bottom of a leg, making sure the toes face forward and spread slightly outside the sandal opening.

Blue and White Striped Romper Shorts

The romper is made as a removable-looking garment, but it is sewn in place for stability. The image shows horizontal blue and white stripes, with short legs ending above the knees. Use sky blue and white yarn. Change color every round for the striped effect.

First Shorts Leg

Start with sky blue.

  1. R1: Ch 18, join with sl st to form a ring, sc 18 around. (18)
  2. R2: change to white, sc around. (18)
  3. R3: change to sky blue, sc around. (18)

FO the first leg. Make the second leg the same way, but do not fasten off after R7.

Join Shorts Legs

  1. R8: With second leg on hook, ch 3, sc 18 around first leg, sc 3 across ch, sc 18 around second leg, sc 3 across other side of ch. (42)
  2. R9: change to white, sc around. (42)
  3. R10: change to sky blue, sc around. (42)
  4. R11: change to white, sc around. (42)
  5. R12: change to sky blue, (sc 5, dec) 6 times. (36)
  6. R13: change to white, sc around. (36)
  7. R14: change to sky blue, sc around. (36)
  8. R15: change to white, (sc 4, dec) 6 times. (30)
  9. R16: change to sky blue, sc around. (30)

FO and weave in ends. Slide the shorts over the frog legs before attaching the swim ring, or carefully place them around the body if the legs are already sewn. Sew the top edge to the body with small hidden stitches. Keep the stripes horizontal and centered.

Romper Chest Panels

The image shows blue and white striped panels rising above the yellow swim ring. Make two rectangular front panels and sew them to the upper body. The yellow swim ring will partly cover their lower edge.

Make two panels.

  1. Row 1: With sky blue, ch 9, sc in second ch from hook and across. (8)
  2. Row 2: change to white, ch 1, turn, sc across. (8)
  3. Row 3: change to sky blue, ch 1, turn, sc across. (8)
  4. Row 4: change to white, ch 1, turn, sc across. (8)
  5. Row 5: change to sky blue, ch 1, turn, sc across. (8)
  6. Row 6: change to white, ch 1, turn, sc across. (8)
  7. Row 7: change to sky blue, ch 1, turn, sc across. (8)
  8. Row 8: change to white, ch 1, turn, sc across. (8)
  9. Row 9: change to sky blue, ch 1, turn, sc across. (8)

FO with a long tail. Place the two panels on the front of the body, leaving a 1 stitch gap at the center. Sew the side and bottom edges down. The top edges should sit under the collar, and the bottom edges should disappear behind the duck swim ring.

Sailor-Style Blue Collar

The collar sits around the neck and folds outward over the shoulders. Use darker blue yarn. The collar is rounded in front and wider on the sides, similar to a soft beach jacket collar.

  1. Row 1: Ch 31, sc in second ch from hook and across. (30)
  2. Row 2: ch 1, turn, inc, sc 28, inc. (32)
  3. Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc 4, hdc 6, dc 12, hdc 6, sc 4. (32)
  4. Row 4: ch 1, turn, sc across. (32)
  5. Row 5: ch 1, turn, sc 6, hdc 5, dc 10, hdc 5, sc 6. (32)

FO with a long tail. Wrap the collar around the neck with the opening at the front. Sew the back center and shoulder edges to the body and lower head. Let the front points rest over the striped chest panels. Add one row of white surface slip stitches along the lower edge if desired.

Yellow Duck Swim Ring

The swim ring is the most important accessory. It is a thick yellow oval tube around the frog waist, with a duck head at the front. It should look padded, rounded, and snug, but not tight enough to hide the striped romper completely.

Ring Tube

Use yellow yarn. Work in a long tube, stuff gradually, then sew into an oval.

  1. R1: 8 sc in MR. (8)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (16)
  3. R3: (sc 1, inc) 8 times. (24)
  4. R4-R58: sc around. (24)

Stuff the tube as you work. The tube should be firm and evenly rounded. Do not pack stuffing too hard near the ends because they must join smoothly.

  1. R59: (sc 1, dec) 8 times. (16)
  2. R60: dec 8 times. (8)

FO with a very long tail. Bend the tube into an oval ring around the frog waist. Sew the ends together invisibly. Then sew the inner back of the ring to the body and shorts in several hidden spots so it stays in place. The front center should sit slightly higher to display the duck head.

Duck Head on Swim Ring

Use yellow yarn. This duck head is attached at the front center of the ring and faces forward.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: (sc 1, inc) 6 times. (18)
  4. R4: (sc 2, inc) 6 times. (24)
  5. R5-R8: sc around. (24)
  6. R9: (sc 2, dec) 6 times. (18)
  7. R10: (sc 1, dec) 6 times. (12)

FO with a long tail. Flatten slightly and sew to the duck head between the eyes, centered on R6-R7. The beak should project forward like a small oval.

Duck Wings on Ring

Make two in yellow.

  1. R1: Ch 7, sc in second ch from hook, hdc 2, dc 2, 4 dc in last ch, working down other side, dc 2, hdc 2, sc 1. (15)

FO with a tail. Sew one wing on each side of the swim ring near the duck head. Angle the wings slightly downward. Add tiny stitch lines with yellow yarn to suggest feather texture.

Small Sun Appliqués

The reference shows tiny yellow sun-like motifs on the romper and near the swim ring. Make three or four small appliqués in yellow. Use the 2.5 mm hook.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR, join with sl st. (6)
  2. R2: (ch 3, sl st in second ch, sl st in next ch, sl st in next sc) repeat 6 times.

FO with a sewing tail. Sew one appliqué to the right chest panel, one to the lower left side of the shorts, and one to the lower right leg of the shorts. Keep them small so they look like decorative sunny patches.

Blue Slide Sandals

Make two sandals. The sandals are blue with open toes, white sole edge, and a red starfish detail on top. The frog toes should remain visible at the front.

White Sole

Make two in white.

  1. R1: Ch 10, sc in second ch from hook, sc 7, 3 sc in last ch, working down other side, sc 7, inc. (20)

FO with a long tail. Place the blue base over the white sole and sew around the edge. Leave the front toes exposed. Sew the frog foot onto the sandal base with hidden stitches through the heel area.

Sandal Strap

Make two in darker blue.

  1. Row 1: Ch 12, sc in second ch from hook and across. (11)
  2. Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc across. (11)
  3. Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc across. (11)

FO with a long tail. Place the strap across the top of the foot behind the toes. Sew each strap end to the sandal sides. Do not sew over the front toes. The toes should peek out clearly like the image.

Red Starfish for Sandals

Make two in red using the 2.5 mm hook.

  1. R1: 5 sc in MR, join with sl st. (5)
  2. R2: (ch 4, sl st in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sl st in next sc) repeat 5 times.

FO with a sewing tail. Sew one red starfish onto each sandal strap, slightly toward the outer side. Use small stitches at the center and at the end of each point so the starfish stays flat.

Striped Sun Hat

The hat is a flat-brimmed beach hat with blue and yellow stripes. It sits separately beside the frog in the image, with tan ties and a small tan starfish decoration on the brim.

Hat Crown

Start with sky blue.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)

  6. R17: sc around. (72)

FO and weave in ends. Shape the brim flat with your fingers. If needed, lightly steam from a safe distance without touching the yarn directly. The hat should look round and structured, with a strong blue outer edge.

Hat Ties

Cut two 14 inch lengths of tan yarn. Attach one length to each side of the hat brim. Tie a small knot at each attachment point. Let the cords hang down freely, matching the relaxed beach-hat ties in the image.

Use tan yarn and the 2.5 mm hook.

  1. R1: 5 sc in MR, join with sl st. (5)
  2. R2: (ch 5, sl st in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, sl st in next sc) repeat 5 times.

FO with a tail. Sew the starfish to the right side of the hat brim. Add a few darker tan straight stitches from the center to each point if you want extra texture.

Small Striped Beach Bag

The beach bag is small, rectangular, and striped with tan, blue, and yellow. It has a long tan strap and a shell appliqué on the front. The bag sits beside the hat in the image.

Bag Body

Insert two 5 mm safety eyes between R4 and R5, about 4 stitches apart. Stuff firmly. FO with a tail. Sew the head to the front top of the body.

Mini Duck Beak

Use orange yarn.

  1. R1: Ch 4, sc in second ch from hook, sc 1, 3 sc in last ch, working down other side, sc 1, inc. (8)
  2. R2: sc around. (8)

FO, flatten, and sew to the face below the eyes. Keep it small and rounded.

Duck Wing

Make one visible wing in yellow.

  1. Ch 6, sc in second ch from hook, hdc 2, dc 1, 4 dc in last ch, working other side, dc 1, hdc 2, sc 1.

FO and sew to one side of the mini duck. Embroider two curved yellow lines on the wing if you want it to match the textured look of the image.

Colorful Beach Ball

The ball is round and divided into white, blue, and yellow panels with a small red accent. The easiest way is to crochet a white base ball and surface crochet or sew colored curved panels onto it.

Base Ball

Use white yarn.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: (sc 1, inc) 6 times. (18)
  4. R4: (sc 2, inc) 6 times. (24)
  5. R5-R8: sc around. (24)
  6. R9: (sc 2, dec) 6 times. (18)
  7. R10: (sc 1, dec) 6 times. (12)
  8. R11: dec 6 times. (6)

Stuff firmly before closing. FO and close the hole.

Ball Color Panels

Use blue, yellow, and red yarn. Surface crochet three curved lines from top to bottom, spacing them evenly around the ball. Fill one section with blue by sewing 5 curved lines close together. Fill one smaller section with yellow. Add a short red patch near the top between the blue and white sections.

Keep all panel stitches neat and shallow so the ball remains round. The image shows a handmade ball with strong beach colors, not a perfectly printed design, so slight handmade variation is acceptable.

Optional White Stripe Details

For extra accuracy, add fine white highlight stitches on the blue collar and sandals. Use white yarn or embroidery thread. On the collar, make short straight stitches near the front edges. On each sandal, sew one white line around the sole edge to make the blue upper stand out.

Assembly Order

  1. Sew the white eye bases into the green eye domes.
  2. Sew the completed eyes onto the top front of the frog head.
  3. Sew the mouth ridge across the front of the head below the eyes.
  4. Attach the body to the lower head, keeping the head slightly tilted backward.
  5. Sew legs under the body and attach feet to the legs.
  6. Place and sew the striped shorts around the hips and upper legs.
  7. Sew the striped chest panels to the front body.
  8. Sew the collar around the neck and over the upper panels.
  9. Sew arms to the body sides and attach the webbed hands.
  10. Shape the yellow swim ring into an oval and sew it around the waist.
  11. Attach the duck head, beak, and wings to the front of the ring.
  12. Add sun appliqués to the romper and swim ring area.
  13. Place the sandals on the feet and sew the straps down.
  14. Add red starfish accents to the sandals.
  15. Make the hat, bag, mini duck, and beach ball as separate accessories.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Before securing every piece permanently, pin the frog together and check the overall balance. The frog should have a wide head, high eyes, a long relaxed body, thin limbs, and a bright yellow swim ring centered at the waist. Adjust the ring and collar before sewing them firmly.

Use black yarn or embroidery thread to deepen the mouth crease if needed. Make one shallow curved line just under the raised green mouth ridge. Do not make the mouth too dark or too low; the frog’s expression should stay soft, sleepy, and friendly.

Check that the pupils point forward and slightly upward. If the eyes are too far apart, the frog will lose the cute look from the image. The best placement is close together at the top of the face, with the white eye bases visible below the green domes.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not twist or wring the amigurumi.
  • Let all pieces air dry flat on a towel.
  • Keep small accessories away from pets if they like to chew yarn.
  • If making for a young child, embroider the eyes instead of using safety eyes.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • Head: wide, rounded, and slightly tilted back.
  • Eyes: raised green domes with white lower sections and black pupils.
  • Mouth: soft raised ridge across the front of the face.
  • Body: slim and covered by striped romper panels.
  • Swim ring: thick yellow oval with duck face at front center.
  • Hands: four long webbed fingers on each side.
  • Feet: three rounded toes visible through blue sandals.
  • Accessories: striped sun hat, beach bag, mini duck, and beach ball completed.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To keep the frog looking fresh, dust it gently with a soft cloth after display. If the swim ring or sandals become flattened, reshape them with your fingers and let the piece rest flat overnight. Store the frog away from direct sunlight so the blue, yellow, and green colors stay bright.

For long-term storage, place the frog and accessories in a breathable cotton bag. Do not compress the hat brim, duck ring, or long limbs under heavy objects. Add a small note with the pattern name and yarn information so repairs can be made easily later.
