Crochet Tutorial: Blue Giraffe Amigurumi in Sunflower Dress – Free Crochet Pattern

This cheerful blue giraffe amigurumi wears a cream sunflower dress with yellow scallop edging, pink spots, long blue-and-pink ossicones, pink ears, yellow sandals, and a tiny sunflower crossbody bag. The matching accessories include a yellow sunflower hat, a small watering can, loose sunflower appliqués, and a potted sunflower, creating a sweet garden-themed crochet set.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed to create a tall, slim, soft amigurumi giraffe similar to the image. The giraffe has a rounded cream muzzle, a blue head and long neck, blue arms and legs, pink hooves, pink body spots, and a cream dress decorated with sunflower appliqués around the skirt.

The finished giraffe is built from separate crocheted parts that are stuffed firmly, shaped carefully, and sewn together at specific angles. The dress is worked as a fitted bodice and flared skirt, then finished with yellow straps, red button accents, sunflower embroidery, and a yellow scalloped hem.

Finished Size

  • Giraffe height: about 13.5 inches from feet to top of ossicones.
  • Head width: about 3.25 inches across the widest part.
  • Neck height: about 3.75 inches.
  • Dress length: about 3.5 inches from shoulder to hem.
  • Hat diameter: about 4.75 inches.
  • Crossbody bag: about 1.5 inches wide.
  • Potted sunflower: about 2 inches tall.

Skill Level

Advanced beginner to intermediate. The stitches are simple, but there are many small details. Take your time with shaping, stuffing, placement, and sewing. The clean final look depends on even tension and careful assembly.

Gauge and Tension

Gauge is not critical, but tight amigurumi tension is important. With a 2.25 mm hook and sport weight cotton, 8 sc should measure about 1 inch across. If stuffing shows through your stitches, use a smaller hook.

The giraffe in the image has smooth, compact stitches. Crochet firmly, but not so tightly that shaping becomes stiff. Stuff the head, muzzle, neck, body, and legs firmly. Stuff the arms more lightly so they hang softly at the sides.

Important Construction Notes

  • Work most pieces in continuous spiral rounds unless a row is specified.
  • Use a stitch marker at the first stitch of every round.
  • Stuff gradually as you crochet to avoid lumps.
  • For the neatest result, sew all small appliqués with matching yarn tails.
  • The giraffe is intentionally long-necked, with a small rounded body hidden under the dress.
  • The face is soft and simple, with the large cream muzzle taking up most of the lower front head.

Color Placement Guide

  • Blue: head, neck, arms, legs, body base, sandals base detail, and parts of the ossicones.
  • Cream: muzzle, dress, shoe sole edge, watering can highlight, and white flower petals.
  • Pink: ears, ossicone stems, hand tips, leg spots, arm spots, cheek-style spots, and hoof pads.
  • Yellow: sunflower petals, hat, dress edging, sandals straps, and bag.
  • Brown: sunflower centers, flower pot soil, bag flower center, and small bag button detail.
  • Green: leaves, stems, sandal leaves, dress flower stems, and hat flower leaves.

Head

Use sky blue yarn and the 2.25 mm hook. The head is oval and slightly wider at the cheeks. The cream muzzle will be sewn to the front later, so keep the head smooth and round.

Cream Muzzle

The muzzle is large, rounded, and oval. It covers the lower front half of the face and gives the giraffe the soft, friendly expression seen in the image.

  1. Use cream yarn.
  2. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  3. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  4. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat 6 times. (18)

  10. R12: sc 3, dec; repeat 6 times. (24)
  11. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Lightly stuff the muzzle. Pin it to the front of the head between R9 and R20. The top edge should sit just below the eyes, and the bottom should curve under the face. Sew around with small, even stitches. Add more stuffing before closing the final inch.

Facial Details

  • Use black embroidery thread to make one tiny nostril on each side of the lower muzzle, about 7 stitches apart.
  • Make each nostril with 2 short horizontal stitches over 1 crochet stitch.
  • Optional: add a tiny vertical cream stitch at the center bottom of the muzzle to shape the mouth area very subtly.
  • Do not add a large smile; the image has a simple, soft face.

Ossicones

Make 2. Each ossicone has a pink stem and a blue rounded knob. They stand upright from the top of the head, slightly leaning outward.

  1. Start with blue yarn.
  2. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  3. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  4. R3-R5: sc around. (12 for 3 rounds)

  6. Change to pink yarn.
  7. R7-R13: sc around. (9 for 7 rounds)
  8. Stuff firmly, especially the blue knob.
  9. FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Pin the ossicones to the top of the head between R3 and R6, about 8 stitches apart. Angle each one slightly outward. Sew securely around the base twice so they stand upright.

Ears

Make 2 ears in pink. The ears are flat, wide, and rounded, like soft leaf shapes extending sideways from the head.

  1. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat 6 times. (18)

Pin each ear to the side of the head around R9 to R12. The ears should sit behind the ossicones and point outward horizontally. Sew along the flattened base only, allowing the rounded ear to remain soft and slightly cupped.

Neck

The long neck is one of the most important shapes in this pattern. It should be slim, straight, and firmly stuffed so it supports the head.

  1. Use blue yarn.
  2. R1: 8 sc in MR. (8)
  3. R2: inc in each st around. (16)
  4. R3: sc 3, inc; repeat 4 times. (20)

  7. R26: sc around in BLO. (20)
  8. R27: sc around. (20)
  9. FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

The top of the neck is sewn under the head, centered below the muzzle. The lower end will be joined into the body opening. Keep both ends circular and smooth.

Body

The body is small and pear-shaped because the dress covers most of it. It should be sturdy enough to hold the long neck and arms.

  1. Use blue yarn.
  2. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  3. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  4. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat 6 times. (18)

  12. R18: sc 2, dec; repeat 6 times. (18)
  13. Stuff firmly.
  14. R19: sc 1, dec; repeat 6 times. (12)
  15. FO, leaving a long tail. Do not close completely if you prefer to sew the neck into the opening.

Position the neck on top of the body. Sew the neck through both the body opening and the base of the neck. Go around twice. The neck must stand straight and centered.

Legs

Make 2. The legs are long and slim in blue, with pink hoof bottoms and yellow sandal details added later. Stuff the feet firmly and the upper legs medium-firm.

Pink Hoof and Blue Leg

  1. Start with soft pink yarn.
  2. R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  3. R2: inc in each st around. (12)

  5. R4: sc around. (18)
  6. Change to sky blue yarn.
  7. R5: BLO sc around. (18)
  8. R6: sc 4, dec; repeat 3 times. (15)
  9. R7-R24: sc around. (15 for 18 rounds)
  10. Stuff the hoof firmly and the leg evenly.
  11. R25: sc 3, dec; repeat 3 times. (12)
  12. R26-R27: sc around. (12 for 2 rounds)
  13. Flatten the top and crochet through both layers: 6 sc across.
  14. FO, leaving a long tail.

Sew the legs to the bottom front of the body, about 8 stitches apart. They should hang straight downward and remain visible below the dress. Attach them securely before adding the dress skirt.

  6. R5-R22: sc around. (9 for 18 rounds)
  7. Stuff the lower half lightly. Leave the upper half almost unstuffed for a natural drape.
  8. Flatten the top and crochet through both layers: 4 sc across, then 1 sl st at the edge.
  9. FO, leaving a long tail.

Sew each arm to the upper side of the body just below the neck, around body R16 to R18. The arms should slope down and outward, resting beside the skirt.

Sew the stem upright to the dark brown soil. Sew one small sunflower at the top. Add two green leaves to the stem using the tiny leaf instructions from the sandal section.

Loose Sunflower Appliqué

Make one additional medium sunflower with two green leaves as a loose accessory. This matches the small sunflower shown near the watering can. You can sew it to the dress, use it as a photo prop, or leave it separate.

Assembly Order

  1. Finish the head, muzzle, ears, and ossicones first.
  2. Sew the muzzle to the head and add facial details.
  3. Make the neck and body, then sew the neck firmly to the body.
  4. Sew the head onto the top of the neck. The muzzle should face forward and slightly downward.
  5. Make and attach both legs to the bottom of the body.
  6. Slip the dress over the body and adjust the skirt evenly.
  7. Sew the dress bodice lightly to the body at the back and sides if needed.
  8. Attach the arms over the dress straps or just under them, depending on your preferred finish.
  9. Add pink spots to the neck, arms, and legs.
  10. Sew yellow straps and red buttons to the dress.
  11. Add sunflower appliqués, green stems, and leaves to the skirt.
  12. Attach sandals, bag, head flowers, and bee.
  13. Make the hat, watering can, loose sunflower, and potted sunflower separately.

Detailed Giraffe Assembly

Pin every part before sewing. The toy should look balanced from the front, side, and back. The long neck needs strong support, so use firm stitching at the neck-body and head-neck joins.

To attach the head, place the top of the neck against the lower center of the head, directly behind the muzzle’s bottom curve. Sew around the neck opening once. Then sew a second round slightly higher into the head stitches for stability.

When attaching the arms, angle them downward from the shoulders so the pink hand tips stop near the lower dress edge. Do not sew the arms too high behind the neck, or they will disappear under the head.

The legs should be attached before the dress is fully secured. Position the legs so they emerge evenly from under the skirt. The feet should point forward, with the pink hoof pads and yellow sandal straps visible.

Dress Decoration Placement

  • Place the largest sunflower at the center front lower skirt.
  • Place two sunflowers to the left and two to the right, following the curve of the hem.
  • Keep each flower about 6 to 8 stitches apart.
  • Embroider green stems downward from each flower to just above the yellow scallop edge.
  • Add small green leaves on alternating sides so the design looks natural.

The sunflower row should sit above the scalloped hem, not on the hem itself. This keeps the yellow petals visible against the cream skirt while preserving the bright yellow border.

Optional Skirt Shaping Tip

If your skirt does not flare enough, gently steam it with your hands while keeping the iron away from the yarn. Shape the skirt outward with your fingers and let it dry completely. Do not press the stitches flat.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face after the whole toy is assembled. The eyes should sit evenly above the large cream muzzle. The ossicones should stand upright, and the ears should extend sideways behind them.

  • Add tiny black eyelashes only if desired, using one short stitch at the outer side of each eye.
  • Keep the nostrils small and low on the muzzle.
  • Trim and hide all yarn tails inside the body or under appliqués.
  • Make sure the crossbody strap lies diagonally and does not twist.
  • Balance the sunflower head decoration so it does not pull the ear downward.

Care Notes

Spot clean the finished giraffe with cool water and mild soap. Avoid soaking if you used safety eyes, buttons, or mixed fibers. Press gently with a towel and reshape the head, neck, dress, and accessories while damp.

  • Do not machine wash if the toy includes glued or delicate sewn decorations.
  • Dry flat in a shaded, airy place.
  • Keep away from high heat to protect the shape and colors.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is centered and securely sewn to the long neck.
  • The cream muzzle is oval, smooth, and lightly stuffed.
  • The ears point outward and sit behind the ossicones.
  • The dress flares evenly with a yellow scalloped hem.
  • Five sunflower appliqués are placed across the skirt front.
  • The yellow crossbody bag rests at the giraffe’s right hip.
  • The sandals show yellow straps, green leaves, and pink hoof details.
  • The hat, watering can, loose sunflower, and potted sunflower are complete.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the giraffe upright or lying flat, not folded under heavy items. The long neck and ossicones can bend if compressed for a long time. Keep the sunflower appliqués from snagging by wrapping the toy loosely in tissue paper or a soft cotton cloth.

For dust removal, use a soft brush and gently sweep over the dress, flowers, and hat brim. If a flower petal curls, dampen your fingertip slightly, shape the petal, and let it dry flat.

If the toy is displayed in sunlight, rotate it occasionally so the colors fade evenly. Cotton yarn holds shape well, but bright yellow, pink, and blue shades stay prettier when kept away from direct sun for long periods.

Helpful Finishing Tips

  • Use pins generously before sewing the appliqués.
  • Match sewing yarn to the appliqué color whenever possible.
  • Use small whipstitches around flower centers so petals stay dimensional.
  • Do not overstuff the bag, watering can, or flowerpot.
  • Use the same hook size throughout for consistent scale.

Your blue giraffe amigurumi is now complete, dressed in a cream sunflower dress with matching yellow garden accessories. The combination of the long blue neck, soft cream muzzle, pink details, sunflower appliqués, and tiny props creates the same playful handmade garden style shown in the image.
