Crochet Tutorial: Cute Penguin Amigurumi in Striped Overalls – Free Crochet Pattern

This cute penguin amigurumi is designed with a round black head, soft white face patches, a tiny orange beak, rosy cheeks, gray wings, blue and white striped overalls, red sandals, a yellow crossbody bag with a strawberry applique, and matching picnic accessories: a striped sun hat, daisy clips, a small basket, and a croissant on a plate.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Penguin height: about 8.5 in / 21.5 cm from head top to sandal bottom.
  • Head width: about 4.1 in / 10.5 cm across the cheeks.
  • Body height: about 4.2 in / 10.7 cm from neck to feet.
  • Sun hat diameter: about 4.8 in / 12.2 cm across the brim.
  • Crossbody bag: about 1.5 in / 3.8 cm wide.
  • Basket: about 1.7 in / 4.3 cm wide.

Skill Level

This pattern is best for confident beginners to intermediate crocheters. The penguin uses basic amigurumi shaping, color changes, surface stitching, small appliques, and simple accessory construction.

Work slowly on the face and overalls because these details create the image-accurate look. Use stitch markers, count every round, and stuff gradually so the head stays smooth and round.

Materials

  • Yarn weight: sport or fine DK cotton yarn.
  • Main black: head, upper feet, sandal openings.
  • Warm white: face patches, belly accents, stripes, hat stripes, plate, flowers.
  • Light gray: body, arms or wings, neck area.
  • Sky blue: striped overalls, straps, hat stripes.
  • Yellow: bag, hat accent stripe, flower centers.
  • Orange: beak and croissant shading.
  • Tan: basket, sandal soles, croissant base.
  • Red: sandals, strawberry applique.
  • Green: strawberry leaves.
  • Pink: cheek blush embroidery.

Abbreviations

  • MR: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: increase, 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible decrease over 2 stitches
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • FO: fasten off
  • st / sts: stitch / stitches
  • R: round or row

Gauge and Construction Notes

Gauge is not critical, but tight stitches are important. With 2.25 mm hook and fine DK cotton, 7 sc by 7 rounds should measure about 1 in / 2.5 cm. If stuffing shows through, use a smaller hook.

The penguin is worked in separate pieces. The head is a black sphere with two white oval face patches sewn onto the front. The body and legs are worked as one piece, then the striped overalls are crocheted directly over the lower body for a fitted look.

The arms are short gray flippers angled downward. The red sandals are sewn over black feet with tan soles and small cream heart details. The bag, hat, basket, croissant, plate, and daisy clips are separate accessories.

Color Plan for Image Accuracy

  • Head: black round cap shape, visible around the white face patches.
  • Face: two warm white ovals, touching near the beak but separated softly by stitch texture.
  • Beak: short horizontal orange oval, centered between the eyes.
  • Body: gray upper torso, covered partly by blue and white striped overalls.
  • Overalls: alternating sky blue and warm white stripes, with blue straps and two round floral buttons.
  • Bag: yellow pouch worn diagonally from left shoulder to right hip, with red strawberry applique.
  • Hat: separate round striped hat in sky blue, white, and one yellow accent stripe, with a daisy on the brim.

Add final stuffing before closing. R29: dec 6 times. FO, leaving a tail. Weave through the front loops of the final 6 sts, pull closed, and secure inside the head.

White Face Patches

Make 2 in warm white. These patches are oval and slightly vertical. They sit on the lower front of the head, touching the black border around the sides and leaving a black cap above.

  1. R1: ch 7. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 5, 3 sc in last ch. Work on other side of chain, sc 4, inc in last ch. (14)
  2. R2: inc, sc 4, inc in next 3 sts, sc 4, inc in next 2 sts. (20)

  4. R4: sc 2, inc, sc 6, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc, sc 6, sc 2, inc, sc 2, inc. (32)
  5. R5: sc around. (32)

FO with a long sewing tail. Pin the patches on the front of the head. Place the inner edges about 2 sts apart at the upper center and almost touching below the beak. The top of each patch should begin around R11 of the head, and the bottom should reach around R22.

Sew with tiny whip stitches through the outer loops only. Do not overstuff the patches. They should lie flat against the head with a soft raised edge.

Eyes

Insert or sew 8 mm black eyes through the white patches before final sewing if using safety eyes. Place each eye between patch R3 and R4, about 7 sts from the inner edge and 5 sts below the top of each patch.

For embroidered eyes, sew a black satin circle over 5 horizontal stitches, then add one tiny white highlight stitch at the upper outer side.

Beak

Use orange yarn. The beak is a small horizontal oval that projects gently from the face.

  1. R1: ch 5. Starting in second ch from hook, sc 3, 3 sc in last ch. Work on other side, sc 2, inc in last ch. (10)
  2. R2: inc, sc 2, inc in next 3 sts, sc 2, inc in next 2 sts. (16)
  3. R3: sc around. (16)
  4. R4: sc 2, dec; repeat 4 times. (12)

FO with a long tail. Add a tiny amount of stuffing. Sew centered between the two face patches, with the top of the beak between the eyes and the bottom about 2 rounds lower. Flatten slightly as you sew so it looks like a soft oval muzzle.

Cheek Blush

Use pink yarn or embroidery thread. On each white patch, embroider 3 short horizontal blush lines under the eye. Each line should be 2 sts wide. Place the lines between face patch R4 and R5, slightly angled upward toward the outer cheek.

  • First line: 2 sts wide.
  • Second line: 3 sts wide, directly below the first.
  • Third line: 2 sts wide, slightly lower and outward.

Body and Legs

Start with the legs in black for the feet, then continue into the gray body. The overalls will cover most of the lower body, so keep the body smooth and firm.

Leg One

Stuff the legs firmly and the body evenly. FO with a long tail for sewing the body to the head. The body should be pear-shaped, wider at the lower overalls and narrower at the neck.

Striped Overalls Base

The overalls are crocheted as a fitted layer around the lower body. Use sky blue and warm white. Work in joined rounds so the stripes line up neatly at the back.

Hold the penguin body upside down. Join sky blue yarn in a front loop from Body R10 at the center back. Work around the lower body surface using the exposed spaces between rounds. If you prefer, crochet the overalls separately and sew them on.

Sew or place the croissant on the plate. If making the toy for a child, sew it securely to the plate with tan yarn.

Joining the Head and Body

Pin the head to the body before sewing. The head is larger than the body and should sit low, giving the penguin a cute rounded look. The face should point forward, with the body centered under the beak.

  1. Place the neck opening of the body against the lower back-center of the head.
  2. Use the long gray body tail to sew around the neck twice.
  3. After the first round of sewing, check that the penguin stands straight.
  4. Add extra stuffing into the neck before closing the final gap.
  5. Sew a second round for strength, then hide the yarn tail inside the body.

Positioning Guide

  • Head: large and round, about half the total height of the doll.
  • Face patches: centered low on the head, white ovals almost touching under the beak.
  • Eyes: set on the white patches, slightly above the beak line.
  • Beak: horizontal, centered, small, and raised.
  • Body: gray upper chest visible above overalls.
  • Overalls: fitted around body and legs, with blue and white stripes.
  • Arms: gray flippers angled downward from shoulders.
  • Bag: yellow pouch rests on right hip, strap crosses diagonally.
  • Sandals: red straps over black feet with tan soles visible underneath.

Optional Surface Details

To make the overalls look closer to the image, use sky blue yarn and surface slip stitch around the waistline. Add one white surface line across the bib center if the stripe is not visible enough.

Use light gray yarn to embroider two short horizontal chest lines just above the bib. This gives the gray upper body the soft crocheted texture seen in the photo.

For extra round cheeks, add one or two soft pink stitches on each cheek after the head is fully assembled. Keep the blush light and short so it does not overpower the face.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Sew all pieces with matching yarn and small, even stitches.
  • Check that both white face patches are symmetrical before securing the final stitches.
  • Make sure the beak is centered between the patches and does not tilt.
  • Attach the flippers at equal height, angled down toward the overalls.
  • Sew the overall straps flat against the shoulders and secure them at the back waist.
  • Place the yellow bag after the arms are attached so the strap sits naturally across the body.
  • Attach the red sandals last, making sure the penguin can sit or lie flat without twisting.

For the face, add the blush after the eyes and beak are complete. This helps you balance the expression. The finished penguin should have a soft, friendly look with round black head shaping and bright white cheeks.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cold water and mild soap.
  • Do not soak if you used safety eyes, decorative buttons, or glued details.
  • Press gently with a towel to remove moisture.
  • Air dry flat in a shaded place.
  • Do not machine dry, because heat can distort the stuffing and small accessories.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, smooth, and firmly stuffed.
  • The white face patches are even and sewn flat.
  • The beak is a short orange oval centered between the cheeks.
  • The overalls have clear blue and white horizontal stripes.
  • The straps have two small round buttons on the front.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Keep the penguin away from direct sunlight for long periods, especially if using cotton yarn in bright blue, red, and yellow shades. Strong sunlight can fade the colors and make the accessories look older.

Store the penguin in a dry place with the hat and picnic pieces beside it. If the hat brim flattens, reshape it gently with your fingers. Do not iron the toy directly.

If dust collects on the stitches, use a soft brush or lint roller with very gentle pressure. For deeper cleaning, dab only the stained area with a damp cloth and let the piece air dry completely before storing.
