Pattern Overview
This pattern is written in US crochet terms and is designed to create a soft penguin amigurumi with a rounded head, small body, short legs, flat sandals, and several garden-themed accessories. The finished doll has a playful handmade look with visible spiral crochet rounds, firm shaping, and layered applique details.
The penguin is worked mostly in continuous rounds. The body and head are made separately, then sewn together firmly. The overalls are built directly around the lower body so they look fitted, with yellow stripes and sunflower patches matching the image.
The accessories are intentionally small and detailed. The hat is a wide green sunhat with a slightly raised crown, a yellow band, and two sunflowers near the brim. The bag is a yellow sunflower purse with a diagonal strap. The basket, watering can, bee, and ladybug complete the garden scene.

- Bag size: about 1.75 inches wide.

Skill Level
Confident beginner to intermediate. You should know how to crochet in continuous rounds, increase, decrease, change colors, make small appliques, sew pieces together, and embroider simple details.

Gauge Notes
Exact gauge is less important than firm tension. Your stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through. For the look in the image, use a small hook with cotton yarn so the stitches form neat, close spiral lines across the head, body, and accessories.
For best results, crochet the penguin body with consistent tension. If your fabric feels loose, go down one hook size. If the fabric curls too tightly or becomes stiff, loosen your tension slightly but keep the stitches compact.
Main Penguin Head
The head is round and oversized compared with the body. The black upper head wraps around the cream face area, while the cream face forms two large oval patches on the front. The black area should cover the top, sides, and back of the head.

Cream Face Patches for Extra Oval Shape
The image shows the cream face as two rounded oval patches that meet softly near the beak. The color-change method creates the base, but these thin appliques make the front look more like the picture.
Make 2 Oval Face Patches
- With cream yarn, ch 9.
- R1: Starting in second ch from hook, sc 7, 3 sc in last ch. Work on the other side of chain, sc 6, inc in last ch. 18 sts

- FO with a long sewing tail.
Pin the two ovals to the front of the head so they touch slightly in the center below the beak position. The outer sides should sit under the eyes. Sew with small hidden stitches using cream yarn.
Orange Beak
The beak is short, rounded, and horizontal. It should sit between the eyes, slightly below center, with a soft oval shape that protrudes from the face.
- R1: With orange yarn, make MR, 6 sc. 6 sts
- R2: inc in each st around. 12 sts
- R3: sc around. 12 sts
- R4: sc 2, dec, repeat 3 times. 9 sts
- FO, leaving a long tail. Add a very small pinch of stuffing.
Flatten the back of the beak lightly. Sew it centered between the eyes over R23-R25 of the head. Use the yarn tail to shape the beak into a slightly oval mound, not a long cone.
Blush Cheeks
The cheeks in the image are soft pink horizontal blush marks under the eyes. Use pink embroidery thread or a tiny amount of textile-safe blush.
- For embroidery, make 4 short horizontal stitches under each eye.
- Place the stitches between R25 and R27.
- Each blush patch should be about 5 stitches wide.
- Keep the blush soft and light, not dark or thick.

Joining the Head and Body
Before sewing, pin the head to the body. The cream face should point forward, and the beak should sit directly over the center of the bib. The body is smaller, so the head should look large and rounded like the image.
- Thread the long body tail onto a yarn needle.
- Place the body under the head with the cream shirt touching the lower head.
- Sew through the top body stitches and the lower head stitches around the neck opening.
- Make two full sewing rounds for strength.
- Before fully closing, add extra stuffing into the neck area.
- Pull gently to remove wobble, but do not distort the head shape.
- Secure the yarn with a knot hidden under the head.
Facial Embroidery
The face should remain simple and sweet. The eyes are glossy black, the beak is orange, and the cheeks are soft pink. Avoid heavy mouth embroidery because the photographed penguin has a clean, gentle expression.
- Add a tiny black stitch at each outer corner of the beak only if you want extra definition.
- Use pink thread to make 4 short blush lines on each side.
- Keep the blush under the eyes and slightly outward from the beak.
- Do not add eyebrows; the head should stay round and baby-like.
Sunflower Placement Guide
There are several sunflower accents in this design. Each one helps match the garden theme, so place them carefully rather than randomly.
- Overall leg sunflower: large flower on the lower front of one green leg.
- Bag sunflower: medium flower centered on the yellow crossbody bag.
- Hat sunflowers: two flowers together on the lower front side of the hat.
- Strap buttons: two small flowers at the top of the overall straps.
- Sandal flowers: tiny flowers on the outer side of each green sandal.
Detailed Crochet Notes for a Clean Finish
Use invisible decreases for all amigurumi shaping. This keeps the black head, green overalls, and rounded accessories smooth. Standard decreases can leave small gaps, especially with light-colored cotton yarn.
When sewing appliques to the doll, use matching yarn and small whip stitches. Insert the needle under the top loops of the applique edge and into the surface stitches of the doll. Do not sew too deeply, or the surface may pucker.
For the hat, keep the brim flat while sewing the yellow band and flowers. If the brim curls upward too much, gently steam it from a distance and flatten it with your hand after it cools.
For the sandals, make sure the black foot is visible at the front. The green strap should sit across the upper foot, not over the toes completely. The tan sole should show as a narrow outline around the bottom.
Assembly Order
- Crochet and stuff the head.
- Add the cream oval face patches if using them.
- Attach the safety eyes, beak, and blush.
- Crochet and stuff the body.
- Sew the legs to the body.
- Add the yellow waist stripe, bib, straps, flower buttons, and ruffles.
- Crochet and attach the gray wings.
- Make the feet and sandals, then sew them to the bottom of the legs.
- Sew the head to the body firmly.
- Add the large sunflower patch to the overalls.
- Make and attach the crossbody sunflower bag.
- Make the hat and its flowers.
- Make the watering can, berry basket, bee, and ladybug.
Positioning the Feet
The feet should sit slightly apart and point outward. In the image, the sandals are placed below the short overall legs and create a stable sitting pose. Sew them flat enough so the penguin can lean against a surface without tipping forward.
- Pin the sandals under the legs before sewing.
- Angle each sandal outward by about 15 degrees.
- Sew through the top of the black foot into the bottom of the leg.
- Make several stitches through the heel area for stability.
- Hide yarn tails inside the leg.
Making the Accessories Look Like a Set
The garden accessories should share the same yarn colors as the penguin outfit. Use the same green for the overalls, hat, and sandals. Use the same yellow for the sunflower petals, bag, bee body, and outfit trim.
This color matching makes the finished project look coordinated. The tan watering can and basket add a soft neutral contrast, while the red ladybug and berries bring small bright accents.
Optional Wire-Free Safety Version
If this project is for a child, avoid wire, beads, hard decorations, or removable accessories. Sew the hat, bag, flowers, bee, and ladybug permanently to the doll. Replace safety eyes with embroidered eyes for children under three years old.
- For embroidered eyes, make a black satin stitch oval over 3 rounds.
- Add one tiny white stitch on each eye for shine.
- Sew all accessories with doubled yarn.
- Do not use glue for a baby-safe version.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
Check the front view before weaving in the last ends. The beak should be centered, the eyes should be even, and the cheeks should sit at the same height. The straps should run neatly over the shoulders, and the bag strap should cross diagonally over the front.
Sew the hat flowers securely and place the hat beside the penguin or lightly tack it to the head if you want it permanently attached. Arrange the bee, ladybug, watering can, and berry basket around the penguin to recreate the full garden display.
Care Notes
- Spot clean the doll with a damp cloth and mild soap.
- Do not soak if safety eyes, blush, or glued details were used.
- Let the doll air dry completely before storing.
- Keep the hat brim flat while drying.
- Brush away dust with a soft dry paintbrush.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The head is round, black on top, and cream on the front.
- The orange beak is centered between the eyes.
- The cheeks are soft pink and placed evenly.
- The green overalls have yellow trim and a sunflower patch.
- The white ruffles sit under the straps.
- The gray wings angle downward at the sides.
- The sandals show black toes, green tops, tan soles, and tiny flowers.
- The sunflower bag hangs diagonally across the body.
- The green hat has a yellow band and two sunflowers.
- The bee, ladybug, watering can, and berry basket are complete.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the finished penguin in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Cotton yarn can fade if exposed to strong sun for long periods, especially the green, yellow, and red details.
If the doll becomes dusty, use a soft brush first. For small stains, dab gently with cool water and mild soap. Avoid rubbing the face because blush and embroidery can shift or fade.
To preserve the shape, do not compress the doll under heavy objects. Keep the hat brim flat and store small accessories in a fabric pouch if they are not sewn permanently to the penguin.
