Crochet Tutorial: Giraffe Amigurumi in Blue Gingham Dress – Free Crochet Pattern

This cheerful giraffe amigurumi wears a sweet blue gingham dress with tiny daisy straps, carrot appliqués, brown hooves, ossicones, wide yellow ears, round white eyes, a little bee friend, a crossbody basket bag, and matching picnic accessories including a straw hat, watermelon slice, and lemonade bottle. The finished doll is tall, slim, playful, and designed with soft shaping to match the handmade look in the image.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Giraffe doll height: about 14.5 inches from hooves to ossicone tips when made with sport weight cotton yarn and a 2.25 mm hook.
  • Dress width at hem: about 7 inches laid flat.
  • Hat diameter: about 5.25 inches.
  • Basket bag: about 1.75 inches tall, not including strap.
  • Watermelon slice: about 1.75 inches wide.
  • Lemonade bottle: about 2.25 inches tall.

Skill Level

Advanced beginner to intermediate. The pattern uses basic amigurumi stitches, color changes, small appliqués, surface stitching, and careful assembly. The giraffe body is simple, but the dress, facial details, spots, picnic pieces, and accessories require patience.

Materials

  • Sport weight cotton yarn in golden yellow for the giraffe body.
  • Sport weight cotton yarn in warm brown for hooves, ossicone tips, spots, and muzzle accents.
  • Sport weight cotton yarn in sky blue for the dress.
  • Sport weight cotton yarn in white for gingham checks, eye whites, daisies, watermelon stripe, and bottle details.
  • Small amount of pale blue yarn for dress edging and hat ribbon accents.
  • Small amount of tan yarn for the basket bag and straw hat.
  • Small amount of orange yarn for carrots and flower.
  • Small amount of green yarn for carrot tops, watermelon rind, flower leaf, and bottle cap.
  • Small amount of red yarn for watermelon flesh and ladybug bodies.

Abbreviations Used

  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec: invisible single crochet decrease
  • BLO: back loop only
  • FLO: front loop only
  • st: stitch
  • sts: stitches
  • R: round or row
  • FO: fasten off

Gauge and Construction Notes

Gauge is not strict, but stitches must be tight enough so stuffing does not show. With sport weight cotton and a 2.25 mm hook, 10 sc rounds should measure about 1 inch tall. Use a smaller hook if your stitches look loose.

The doll is worked mostly in continuous spiral rounds. Do not join rounds unless the pattern specifically says to join. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round. Stuff gradually and firmly, especially the head, neck, feet, and body.

The giraffe in the image has a large oval head, long slim neck, long yellow legs, narrow arms, rounded brown hooves, wide side ears, two brown-tipped ossicones, and a blue gingham dress with a flared skirt. The pattern builds each feature separately so the final look stays close to the image.

Color Plan

  • Main giraffe: golden yellow.
  • Hooves and ossicone tips: warm brown.
  • Spots: warm brown, sewn on as flat circles and ovals.
  • Dress: sky blue with white gingham rows and columns.
  • Dress trim: pale blue and white.
  • Bag and hat: tan with pale blue ribbon details.
  • Picnic appliqués: orange carrots, white daisies, red watermelon, yellow lemonade bottle, red ladybugs.

  21. FO, close the remaining hole, and weave in the end.

Muzzle Embroidery and Nose Area

The image shows a smooth yellow face with small brown muzzle marks near the center. There is no separate protruding snout, so the details are embroidered and appliquéd lightly instead of making a large raised muzzle.

  • Cut a 14 inch strand of warm brown yarn.
  • Embroider two small oval nostrils on the lower front of the head, about 5 rounds below the eye position.
  • Each nostril should be 3 short horizontal stitches wide and 2 stitches tall.
  • Add a tiny curved smile using 3 backstitches below the nostrils.
  • Keep all facial stitching soft and small so the big white eyes remain the main feature.

Large White Eye Circles

Make two white circles. The black safety eyes are attached through the white circles before sewing them to the head. This gives the wide-eyed cartoon look in the image.

Eye Circle, Make 2

  1. With white and 2.0 mm hook, R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc in each st around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat 6 times. (18)
  4. Sl st in next st and FO, leaving a long sewing tail.
  5. Insert one 8 mm black safety eye slightly above the center of each white circle.

Attach the Eyes

  • Pin the two white eye circles side by side on the upper front of the head.
  • Place them between R11 and R16 of the head, with the inner edges touching or nearly touching.
  • The eyes should sit slightly above the widest part of the face.
  • Sew around each white circle using small stitches through the outer loops.
  • Secure the safety eye backs only after checking that both eyes face forward evenly.

Ears

The giraffe has two large leaf-shaped yellow ears that stick out horizontally from the sides of the head. They are flattened and lightly curved.

Ear, Make 2

  1. With golden yellow, ch 9.
  2. R1: starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 1, hdc 2, dc 2, hdc 2, sc 1. Work on the opposite side of the chain: sc 1, hdc 2, dc 2, hdc 2, sc 1. (16)
  3. R2: sc 2, hdc 2, dc inc in next 2 sts, hdc 2, sc 2, hdc 2, dc inc in next 2 sts, hdc 2. (20)
  4. R3: sc 3, hdc 3, dc 4, hdc 3, sc 4, hdc 3. (20)
  5. Sl st in next st and FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Ear Shaping

  • Fold the base of each ear slightly in half.
  • Sew 3 stitches through the folded base to pinch it.
  • Attach ears to the sides of the head between R12 and R16.
  • Angle each ear outward and slightly upward, like the image.

Ossicones

The ossicones are tall, narrow, and rounded at the top. They are yellow at the base, pale green near the flower side if desired, and brown on the rounded tips. For a clean match, use brown tips and yellow stems.

  • Leave about 6 stitches between the bases.
  • Angle them slightly outward, with brown tips pointing upward.
  • Sew firmly around each base twice so they stand straight.

The long slim neck is an important part of this giraffe. It should be firm enough to hold the head upright. Stuff tightly, but do not stretch the stitches open.

  1. With golden yellow, R1: 8 sc in MR. (8)

  15. Stuff the body firmly, keeping the bottom rounded and the top narrow.
  16. R20: sc around. (18)
  17. Sl st in next st and FO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Legs

The legs are long and straight with rounded brown hooves. They should hang below the skirt and look slim like the image.

Leg, Make 2

  1. With warm brown, R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)
  2. R2: inc around. (12)
  3. R3: sc 1, inc; repeat 6 times. (18)

Arms

The arms are slim and yellow with rounded brown hands. They are attached at the upper body and hang down over the sides of the dress.

Arm, Make 2

Attach the Arms

  • Pin arms at the sides of the body near R18-R19.
  • Angle them slightly downward so the brown hands reach the upper skirt.
  • Sew securely through the closed top of each arm.
  • The bag strap will later cross over one shoulder and partly cover one arm.

Joining the Neck, Body, and Head

First sew the neck to the top of the body. Place the neck centered over the body opening and sew around twice. Add extra stuffing through the neck before closing the seam completely.

Next place the head on top of the neck. The head should tilt only slightly forward, not sideways. Pin all around before sewing. Use the long neck tail to sew one complete round, then sew a second round slightly higher for stability.

Brown Giraffe Spots

The spots are uneven round patches, mostly on the neck, head sides, and lower body. In the image, the neck has several round brown spots, and the face has smaller brown side markings.

  • Sew 2 oval spots near the cheek sides.
  • Sew 3 medium spots on the lower body where visible above the dress or beneath straps.
  • Sew remaining small spots wherever balance is needed, keeping the arrangement playful and irregular.

  • Thread a yarn needle with white yarn.
  • Starting at the bodice top, stitch a vertical line down every 6 stitches around the dress.
  • Use running stitches over the blue sections only, spacing each stitch about 1 round tall.

  • Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sl st 1, sc 1, hdc 1.
  • Add green leaves with three tiny chains at the top.
  • Sew it diagonally on the center upper dress.

Dress Fitting on the Doll

Slide the dress up from the legs before attaching final accessories. The bodice should sit around the upper body under the neck, and the skirt should flare over the top of the legs. If the bodice is loose, sew a few hidden stitches through the back of the bodice and body.

  • Center the bodice front under the neck.
  • Arrange the skirt evenly around the body.
  • Pull the legs straight down so they are visible below the hem.
  • Sew the straps over the shoulders after the dress is positioned.
  • Add the daisies last so they sit cleanly on top of the straps.

Tail

The tail is mostly hidden by the dress, but a small tail helps the giraffe look complete from behind.

  1. With golden yellow, ch 10.
  2. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sl st 9.
  3. Cut 3 short strands of brown yarn, each about 3 inches long.
  4. Fold the brown strands and knot them to the end of the tail.
  5. Trim the tassel to about 0.5 inch.
  6. Sew the tail to the back of the body under the dress opening.

Optional Body Weighting

To help the giraffe sit nicely for display, you may add a small pouch of plastic pellets to the lower body before final stuffing. The pouch must be sealed securely inside fabric or a small stocking so pellets cannot escape.

Do not add pellets if the toy is intended for a baby or very young child. For child-safe use, choose only soft stuffing and embroider all facial details instead of using safety eyes.

Positioning Guide for the Image Look

  • Head: large and oval, about the same height as the neck plus upper body.
  • Eyes: oversized white circles placed close together above the center of the face.
  • Ears: wide, flat, leaf-shaped, and sticking out sideways.
  • Ossicones: slim and vertical with brown rounded tips.
  • Neck: long, straight, and spotted down the front.
  • Dress: blue and white checked, fitted at the top and flared at the skirt.
  • Arms: narrow and hanging straight at the sides with brown hands.
  • Legs: long yellow tubes ending in rounded brown hooves.
  • Accessories: picnic-style pieces placed around the doll for a summer handmade scene.

Helpful Tips for Clean Color Changes

When changing colors, finish the last yarn-over of the previous stitch with the new color. This makes stripes and gingham rows neater. Carry unused yarn only for short sections. For longer gaps, cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

For the white gingham surface lines, use a yarn needle instead of crocheting vertical stripes directly into the dress. This keeps the skirt soft and prevents thick, uneven color sections.

How to Keep the Neck Stable

A long amigurumi neck can lean if it is under-stuffed. Add stuffing in small pieces and push it firmly into the center with the back of your hook. The neck should feel springy but not hard.

If you want extra support, roll a small tube of felt and insert it inside the neck before sewing the head. Do not use wire for toys intended for children. The felt tube gives structure while keeping the doll soft.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Check that both eyes are level before tightening any final knots.
  • Add a tiny white highlight stitch to each black eye if you want a glossy look.
  • Keep the nostrils small and rounded, not long or heavy.
  • Sew all spots flat so they do not curl at the edges.
  • Make sure the bee and flower are firmly stitched to the head.
  • Brush the skirt lightly with your fingers to open the flared shape.
  • Steam blocking is not required, but you may lightly shape the hat brim with your hands.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean the giraffe with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not soak if you used safety eyes, buttons, or weighted pellets.
  • Press gently with a towel to remove moisture.
  • Air dry flat in a shaded area.
  • Do not tumble dry, bleach, or iron the amigurumi.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is centered and firmly attached to the neck.
  • The ears point outward evenly.
  • The ossicones stand upright with brown tips visible.
  • The eyes are close together and sewn flat.
  • The blue gingham dress flares evenly all around.
  • The carrot appliqués and daisies are secure.
  • The bag strap crosses the body neatly.
  • The hat, watermelon, and lemonade bottle are finished as matching picnic accessories.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the giraffe in a dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. If dust collects on the stitches, use a soft dry brush and move gently in the direction of the crochet rounds.

For long-term display, keep the doll upright with light support behind the neck. Avoid compressing the ears, ossicones, or dress hem under heavier items, because shaped crochet pieces can flatten over time.

If the dress wrinkles, reshape it with clean hands and let it rest flat overnight. Do not pull hard on the gingham embroidery, appliqués, bag strap, bee, or flower decorations.
