Knitting Tutorial: Cute Lion in a Striped Cardigan – Free Knitting Pattern

This cheerful knitted toy is a tall, beige character with a long rounded head, soft belly, red-and-green Christmas striped cardigan, red Santa hat, green elf shoes, brown candy-cane satchel, and a tiny reindeer companion. The design uses smooth stockinette, ribbed cuffs, small embroidered details, and shaped pieces sewn together for a handmade festive display.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This free knitting pattern is written for a detailed standing plush toy inspired by the image. The finished piece has an elongated neck and head, rounded belly, narrow arms, chunky legs, a bright striped cardigan, floppy Santa hat, elf-style shoes with bells, a brown shoulder bag with candy canes, and a small knitted reindeer placed beside it.

The toy is worked mostly in small pieces and seamed. This method gives better control over the long face, sweater placement, angled arms, rounded belly, and shaped footwear. Most pieces use stockinette stitch with firm stuffing. The cardigan colorwork is made with simple rows, duplicate stitch, and small embroidery so newer knitters can follow it carefully.

Finished Size

  • Main toy height: about 13 inches from shoe sole to top of head, not including the floppy hat tip.
  • Height with hat: about 15 inches when the hat bends to one side.
  • Body width: about 5 inches across the belly.
  • Head width: about 3.5 inches across the widest cheek area.
  • Reindeer height: about 3.75 inches to the antler tips.
  • Satchel size: about 2 inches wide and 2.75 inches tall.

Skill Level

Intermediate beginner to intermediate. The shaping is simple, but there are many small parts. The cardigan uses stripes, ribbing, and embroidered motifs. The face requires careful placement so the toy keeps the same tall, funny, festive expression seen in the image.

Construction Notes

The main figure is built from separate pieces: legs, shoes, lower body, belly, sweater body, arms, long neck, head, eye, nose, teeth, hat, bag, and reindeer. Sew each piece with mattress stitch where possible. Use firm but even stuffing, especially in the legs and lower belly, so the toy can sit upright against a wall or chair.

The image shows a narrow neck rising from a wide sweater collar. The head is long and pear-shaped, wider at the mouth and cheek area, then tapering slightly at the top. One large round eye sits on the viewer’s right side of the head. The other eye is hidden by the Santa hat brim.

  2. Rows 1 to 6: Work K1, P1 rib.
  3. Row 7: K all sts.
  4. BO loosely.

Sew the cuff into a ring. Slide it around the ankle where the beige leg enters the green shoe. Stitch the cuff to the top edge of the shoe and around the bottom of the leg. Add two tiny gold bells to the front of each cuff. For a soft child-safe option, knit small yellow bobbles instead of using metal bells.

Lower Beige Belly and Body

The lower body is round, pale beige, and visible below the sweater. It has a soft oval belly that protrudes slightly forward between the red sweater hem and the legs.

  1. With beige yarn and 3.25 mm needles, CO 18 sts.

Make a second matching piece for the back body. Sew side seams together, leaving the bottom open for attaching legs and the top open for the sweater. Stuff the belly firmly at the front and more lightly at the back. This gives the rounded belly shape visible in the image.

Striped Cardigan Body

The sweater is the main decorative feature. It is red and green with white snowflakes, narrow white divider rows, red ribbing, and small embroidered red flower motifs on the green bands. The cardigan is knitted as a tube-like pullover, then sewn onto the body so it looks like a fitted festive sweater.

Cardigan Back and Front Panel

Make one wide piece and seam at the back. Use 3.25 mm needles unless stated otherwise. Start at the bottom red ribbed hem.

  1. With red yarn and 3.00 mm needles, CO 52 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 6: Work K1, P1 rib.
  3. Change to 3.25 mm needles.
  4. Rows 7 to 8: With green, work St st.
  5. Row 9 RS: With white, K all sts.
  6. Row 10 WS: With white, P all sts.
  7. Rows 11 to 14: With green, work St st.
  8. Rows 15 to 22: With red, work St st.
  9. Rows 23 to 24: With white, work St st.
  10. Rows 25 to 30: With red, work St st.
  11. Rows 31 to 32: With white, work St st.
  12. Rows 33 to 38: With green, work St st.
  13. Rows 39 to 40: With white, work St st.
  14. Rows 41 to 44: With green, work St st.
  15. Rows 45 to 46: With red, work St st.
  16. Rows 47 to 52: With green, work St st.
  17. Rows 53 to 58: With red, work K1, P1 rib for the neck collar.
  18. BO loosely in rib.

Wrap the sweater body around the stuffed belly. The red ribbed hem should sit just above the beige lower belly. Sew the back seam. Do not pull the seam too tight; the sweater should look like it rests over the rounded body rather than squeezing it flat.

Snowflake Embroidery on Red Bands

  • Use white yarn and a tapestry needle.
  • On the wide red chest band, make three snowflakes across the front.
  • Each snowflake is 7 stitches wide and 5 rows tall.
  • Work one vertical straight stitch over 5 rows.
  • Work one horizontal stitch over 5 stitches through the center.
  • Work two diagonal stitches over 3 stitches and 3 rows in each direction.
  • Add two small side stitches at the ends to create the knitted snowflake look.

Small Red Motifs on Green Bands

  • Use red yarn.
  • On the upper green band, embroider 5 small red cross motifs across the front.
  • Each motif uses one vertical stitch over 2 rows and one horizontal stitch over 2 stitches.
  • On the lower green band, embroider 5 matching red motifs.
  • Add tiny white V stitches between motifs to imitate the small fair-isle marks in the image.

Sweater Sleeves

Make two. The sleeves are striped to match the sweater body. They are wider at the upper arm and narrow at the red cuff. Beige hands peek out below the sleeve cuffs.

  1. With red yarn and 3.00 mm needles, CO 18 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 5: Work K1, P1 rib.
  3. Change to 3.25 mm needles.
  4. Rows 6 to 9: With green, work St st.
  5. Rows 10 to 11: With white, work St st.
  6. Rows 12 to 17: With red, work St st.
  7. Rows 18 to 19: With white, work St st.
  8. Rows 20 to 25: With red, work St st.
  9. Rows 26 to 27: With white, work St st.
  10. Rows 28 to 33: With green, work St st.
  11. Row 34: K2, M1, K14, M1, K2. 20 sts.
  12. Rows 35 to 40: Continue in green St st.
  13. BO.

Fold each sleeve lengthwise and sew the seam. Stuff very lightly. The sleeves in the image hang down at a gentle angle, so keep them soft enough to position at the sides of the sweater.

Beige Hands

Make two small mitten-like hands. They should be visible below the red sleeve cuffs, with a rounded tapered shape.

  1. With beige yarn and 3.25 mm needles, CO 10 sts.
  2. Row 1 WS: P all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: K all sts.
  4. Rows 3 to 8: Work in St st.
  5. Row 9: K2tog, K6, K2tog. 8 sts.
  6. Row 10: P all sts.
  7. Row 11: K2tog, K4, K2tog. 6 sts.
  8. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Sew each hand into a small tapered oval. Add a pinch of stuffing. Insert one hand into each sleeve cuff and stitch securely around the cuff edge.

Long Neck

The neck is tall, narrow, and ribbed-looking. It rises from the red sweater collar and supports the large head. Work it firmly so the head does not droop forward.

  1. With beige yarn and 3.25 mm needles, CO 24 sts.
  2. Row 1 WS: P2, K2 across.
  3. Row 2 RS: K2, P2 across.
  4. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until the neck measures 3.25 inches.
  5. Next RS row: K2tog across. 12 sts.
  6. Next WS row: P all sts.
  7. BO, leaving a long tail.

Sew the neck seam. Stuff firmly using small pieces of fiberfill. Insert the lower end into the red collar and sew all around. The neck should lean very slightly backward, because the face projects forward and the hat pulls to the side.

Head

The head is the most important sculpted piece. It is tall and rounded with a long muzzle-like face, broad smile, brown nose, two white teeth, and one visible side eye. The top is partly covered by the Santa hat brim.

Main Head Piece

  1. With beige yarn and 3.25 mm needles, CO 16 sts.
  2. Row 1 WS: P all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: K1, M1, K14, M1, K1. 18 sts.
  4. Row 3: P all sts.
  5. Row 4: K2, M1, K14, M1, K2. 20 sts.
  6. Row 5: P all sts.
  7. Row 6: K3, M1, K14, M1, K3. 22 sts.
  8. Row 7: P all sts.
  9. Row 8: K4, M1, K14, M1, K4. 24 sts.
  10. Row 9: P all sts.
  11. Row 10: K5, M1, K14, M1, K5. 26 sts.
  12. Rows 11 to 24: Work in St st.
  13. Row 25: K6, M1, K14, M1, K6. 28 sts.
  14. Rows 26 to 38: Work in St st.
  15. Row 39: K5, K2tog, K14, K2tog, K5. 26 sts.
  16. Row 40: P all sts.
  17. Row 41: K4, K2tog, K14, K2tog, K4. 24 sts.
  18. Row 42: P all sts.
  19. Rows 43 to 50: Work in St st.
  20. Row 51: K3, K2tog, K14, K2tog, K3. 22 sts.
  21. Row 52: P all sts.
  22. Row 53: K2, K2tog, K14, K2tog, K2. 20 sts.
  23. Row 54: P all sts.
  24. Row 55: K2tog across. 10 sts.
  25. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight.

Sew the head seam at the back. Stuff the head firmly, placing more stuffing in the lower cheek and mouth area. Shape the face by gently squeezing the sides while stuffing. The lower face should look fuller than the forehead.

Face Shaping

  • Thread beige yarn through a tapestry needle.
  • Insert at the back of the head and come out at the left smile corner.
  • Take a small stitch to the right smile corner and pull gently to curve the mouth area.
  • Repeat this shaping stitch twice, but do not pull too tightly.
  • Use your fingers to smooth stuffing upward so the nose area remains rounded.
  • Secure yarn at the back of the head.

Brown Nose

The nose is a raised oval at the center front, placed high on the rounded muzzle. It is dark brown and slightly textured.

  1. With brown yarn and 3.25 mm needles, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1 WS: P all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: K1, M1, K6, M1, K1. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3: P all sts.
  5. Rows 4 to 7: Work in St st.
  6. Row 8: K2tog, K6, K2tog. 8 sts.
  7. Row 9: P all sts.
  8. Row 10: K2tog across. 4 sts.
  9. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Sew around the nose edge, adding a tiny amount of stuffing before closing the final side. Place the nose about 1.25 inches below the top curve of the visible face, centered horizontally.

Smile and Teeth

The smile is a long curved brown embroidered line that runs from one side of the muzzle to the other. Two white teeth hang down from the middle.

  • Use brown yarn or embroidery thread for the smile.
  • Start at the left cheek, about halfway down the nose.
  • Make a gentle curved line under the nose, ending at the right cheek.
  • Use backstitch, making each stitch about 0.25 inch long.
  • Add a short vertical stitch from the nose base down to the center of the smile if desired.

Two Front Teeth

  1. With white yarn and 3.00 mm needles, CO 4 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 5: Work in St st.
  3. BO.
  4. Make a second tooth the same way.

Fold each tooth slightly lengthwise and sew the side edges for a padded look. Attach both teeth directly under the center of the smile. Leave a tiny gap between them. The teeth should be short, rectangular, and playful.

Large Side Eye

The toy has one large visible eye on the viewer’s right side of the head. It sticks out slightly, with a beige base, white eyeball, pale blue iris, black pupil, and tiny black lashes or antenna-like strands above it.

Eye Base

  1. With beige yarn and 3.25 mm needles, CO 10 sts.
  2. Row 1 WS: P all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: K1, M1, K8, M1, K1. 12 sts.
  4. Rows 3 to 8: Work in St st.
  5. Row 9: K2tog, K8, K2tog. 10 sts.
  6. Row 10: P all sts.
  7. Row 11: K2tog across. 5 sts.
  8. Cut yarn, gather, and close.

Sew the eye base into a small ball. Stuff firmly. Attach it to the upper right side of the head, slightly above the nose line. Angle it outward so it is visible from the front.

White Eye Circle

  1. With white yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: K1, M1, K6, M1, K1. 10 sts.
  4. Rows 3 to 4: Work in St st.
  5. Row 5: K2tog, K6, K2tog. 8 sts.
  6. Cut yarn and gather into a round disk.

Sew the white disk to the front of the beige eye base. Embroider a pale blue ring in the center using duplicate stitch over 4 stitches. Add a black pupil in the center and a tiny white highlight stitch at the upper edge.

Eye Lashes

  • Cut three short black yarn strands, each about 1.5 inches long.
  • Thread each strand through the top of the eye base.
  • Knot securely and trim to uneven lengths.
  • The strands should point upward like the delicate marks visible in the image.

Santa Hat

The hat is bright red, soft, and floppy. It sits low over the head, hiding one eye, with a thick white brim and a white pom-pom at the hanging tip.

White Hat Brim

  1. With white yarn and 3.00 mm needles, CO 46 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 8: Work K1, P1 rib.
  3. BO loosely in rib.

Sew the brim into a ring. Place it around the top of the head at a diagonal angle. The brim should cover the left upper face and sit above the visible side eye.

Red Hat Cone

  1. With red yarn and 3.25 mm needles, CO 46 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 6: Work in St st.
  3. Row 7: K4, K2tog across, ending K4. 39 sts.

  11. Row 43: K2tog across. 8 sts.
  12. Rows 44 to 50: Work in St st.
  13. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Sew the back seam of the red cone. Attach the wide edge to the white brim. Stuff the lower hat very lightly, but leave the upper tip soft so it bends left. Add a pipe cleaner only if the toy is decorative and not for a small child.

White Pom-Pom

  • Wrap white yarn around three fingers 45 times.
  • Tie tightly around the center.
  • Cut loops and trim into a round ball about 1 inch wide.
  • Sew the pom-pom to the tip of the red hat.

Brown Shoulder Strap

The strap crosses diagonally from the toy’s left shoulder to the right hip, exactly like the image. It should look like a twisted brown cord.

  1. With brown yarn and 3.00 mm needles, CO 5 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Repeat until the strap measures 13 inches.
  5. BO.

Twist the strip gently before sewing it down. Attach one end near the left shoulder seam, cross it over the sweater front, and sew the lower end to the right side of the satchel. Use tiny hidden stitches so the strap remains raised but secure.

Brown Candy Cane Satchel

The small brown bag hangs at the toy’s right side. It has a square shape with slightly rounded lower corners and two candy canes on the front.

Bag Front

  1. With brown yarn and 3.25 mm needles, CO 16 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 20: Work in St st.
  3. Row 21: K2tog, K12, K2tog. 14 sts.

  2. Rows 1 to 22: Work in St st.
  3. BO.

Bag Gusset

  1. With brown yarn, CO 5 sts.
  2. Work in garter stitch for 7 inches.
  3. BO.

Sew the gusset around the sides and bottom of the bag front. Sew the back panel to the other edge of the gusset. Stuff very lightly with a flat piece of fiberfill so the bag looks soft but not swollen.

Candy Cane Appliques

  • For each candy cane, twist a 5-inch red yarn strand and a 5-inch white yarn strand together.
  • Couch the twisted cord onto the bag front in a cane shape.
  • Make one candy cane vertical near the right side of the bag.
  • Make one candy cane diagonal near the upper front corner.
  • Sew with tiny brown stitches between the stripes to hold the shape.

Small Reindeer Companion

The tiny reindeer stands beside the main toy. It has a tan body, darker brown hooves and antlers, a red nose, small ears, a white tail spot, and black bead-like eyes.

Reindeer Body

  1. With tan yarn and 3.25 mm needles, CO 14 sts.
  2. Row 1 WS: P all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: K1, M1, K12, M1, K1. 16 sts.

  1. With tan yarn, CO 10 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 8: Work in St st.
  3. Row 9: K2tog, K6, K2tog. 8 sts.
  4. Row 10: P all sts.
  5. Row 11: K2tog across. 4 sts.
  6. Cut yarn and gather.

Sew into a small rounded head. Stuff lightly. Attach to the front upper body. Angle the head slightly upward so the red nose is clear.

Reindeer Legs

Make four. The legs are short tan tubes with dark brown hooves.

  1. With dark brown yarn, CO 6 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 3: Work in St st.
  3. Change to tan yarn.
  4. Rows 4 to 12: Work in St st.

  7. Row 6: Sl1, K2tog, pass slipped stitch over. 1 st.
  8. Fasten off.

Make two ears. Sew one to each side of the head. Pinch the base slightly before stitching to create a pointed ear shape.

Reindeer Antlers

  • With brown yarn, make two 4-stitch I-cords, each 1.25 inches long.
  • Make four 3-stitch I-cord branches, each 0.5 inch long.
  • Sew two small branches to each main antler.
  • Attach the antlers to the top of the head, spaced about 0.5 inch apart.

Reindeer Face and Tail

  • Embroider two black eyes with small straight stitches.
  • Make the red nose using three satin stitches at the muzzle tip.
  • Add a tiny white oval tail spot on the back body using duplicate stitch.
  • Add brown hoof lines at the bottom of each leg if needed.

Joining the Main Body

Before sewing the full toy together, lay all pieces on a flat surface. Place the green shoes at the bottom, beige legs above them, round beige belly at the center, sweater over the belly, neck above the sweater collar, and head on top. The full silhouette should be tall, playful, and slightly pear-shaped.

  1. Sew each beige leg into its green shoe opening.
  2. Attach the tops of both legs to the lower body, spacing them 1 inch apart.
  3. Sew the sweater body around the upper belly and secure the red hem in place.
  4. Insert the neck into the sweater collar and sew firmly around the base.
  5. Attach the head to the top of the neck using a circular seam.
  6. Sew the arms to the side of the sweater, beginning just below the shoulder line.
  7. Angle the arms slightly downward so the hands point toward the shoes.
  8. Add the satchel strap diagonally across the front.
  9. Attach the bag at the toy’s right hip, partly overlapping the lower sweater edge.
  10. Sew the Santa hat brim to the head at a diagonal angle.

Cardigan Detail Placement

The striped cardigan should have clear horizontal color bands. The red ribbed hem sits at the bottom. The lower green band has red and white small motifs. The center red section carries larger white snowflakes. The upper green band includes tiny red motifs, and the red collar frames the long beige neck.

  • Bottom hem: red ribbing, 6 rows deep.
  • Lower green band: about 8 rows tall with red cross motifs.
  • White divider: 2 rows above and below red sections.
  • Center red band: 12 rows tall with white snowflake embroidery.
  • Upper green band: about 10 rows tall with red and white small stitches.
  • Collar: red ribbing, standing slightly around the neck.

Optional Safer Bell Substitute

For a decoration, small metal bells look very close to the image. For a toy that may be handled by children, replace the bells with knitted yellow bobbles. This keeps the festive look while avoiding small hard parts.

  1. With yellow yarn, CO 4 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: K2tog twice. 2 sts.
  5. Cut yarn, pull through remaining sts, and roll into a bead.
  6. Sew three beads along each red shoe cuff.

Finishing the Surface Texture

The image has a soft handmade texture with visible knit stitches. Do not brush the whole toy smooth. Instead, keep the stockinette texture visible. Gently steam only if needed, and avoid flattening the nose, eye, sweater motifs, or rounded shoes.

  • Use matching yarn tails to close any small gaps at seams.
  • Shape the belly by rolling it gently between your palms.
  • Pin the sweater bands straight before final stitching.
  • Keep the visible eye round and raised.
  • Let the Santa hat flop naturally to the left side.
  • Position the small reindeer close to the main toy’s left foot.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the face last. The brown nose should sit centered above the curved smile. The two white teeth should hang neatly below the smile line. The large side eye should project outward and slightly upward. Add a few tiny black stitches above the eye for the thin lash details.

Sew the hat brim securely around the head, but do not hide the full face. The brim should cover part of the upper face on one side, giving the same playful asymmetrical expression shown in the image. Attach the strap after the face and sweater are complete so it sits cleanly over the cardigan.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using metal bells or wire inside the hat.
  • Press water out gently with a towel.
  • Air dry flat away from direct sunlight.
  • Reshape the hat, shoes, and belly while damp.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished toy upright in a dry place. If it will be displayed seasonally, wrap it in acid-free tissue before packing. Keep the hat pom-pom loose and uncrushed. Do not store heavy items on top of the toy, because the long neck and raised eye can lose shape.

For dust removal, use a clean soft brush and work gently in the direction of the knit stitches. Avoid pulling at embroidered snowflakes, candy canes, or the reindeer antlers. If the sweater motifs become flattened, lift them carefully with the tip of a tapestry needle.

Refresh the shape once a year by gently squeezing the belly, shoes, and hat back into form. Check the satchel strap and bells before display. Reinforce loose stitching immediately with matching yarn so the small details remain secure and the finished knitted figure keeps its festive handmade charm.
