Pattern Overview
This pattern is written to create a soft knitted crow doll inspired by the pictured design. The finished crow is worked as a stuffed toy with separate shaped pieces that are seamed together for a rounded, handmade look. The cardigan, shorts, hat, sandals, bag, flower, pot, succulent, and watering can are made separately and added during finishing.
The crow body has a large rounded head, a small torso hidden partly by the cardigan, short yellow legs, black three-feather wings, and a black tail visible behind the shorts. The beak is large, textured, and triangular, sitting low on the face below two round white eyes.
- Finished size: about 14 inches tall from top hair loops to sandal sole.
- Skill level: adventurous beginner to intermediate.
- Construction: mostly worked flat, seamed, stuffed, and shaped by gathering.
- Main look: stockinette fabric with ribbed clothing edges and colorful narrow stripes.
- Seaming style: mattress stitch and whipstitch with firm stuffing.

Gauge
Gauge is important because the crow should have a firm toy fabric with no stuffing showing through. Work a small stockinette swatch before starting. If your fabric is loose, move down one needle size. If your fabric is very stiff and difficult to seam, move up one needle size.
- Stockinette gauge: 22 stitches and 30 rows = 4 inches.
- Rib gauge: 24 stitches and 32 rows = 4 inches in K1, P1 rib.
- Toy fabric goal: firm, smooth, and slightly dense.
- Row counting note: count rows carefully so both sides of the doll match.

Main Head
The head is a large rounded oval, wider across the cheeks and slightly flatter at the lower front where the beak is attached. Work two matching head panels, seam them together, and stuff firmly. The black yarn should create a smooth, solid crow face around the beak and eyes.

Head Back Panel
Make the back panel exactly the same as the front panel. Do not add face details to the back. The back should remain smooth black, because the hair loops and flower decoration sit near the upper right side when viewed from the front.
- Repeat all rows from the Head Front Panel.
- Block very lightly with steam held above the fabric, not touching it.
- Place front and back panels together with wrong sides facing inward.
- Seam around the edge using mattress stitch, leaving 2 inches open at the lower neck edge.
- Stuff firmly, shaping the head into a rounded oval.
- Close the opening securely.
Body
The body is shorter and narrower than the head. It is mostly hidden by the striped cardigan and blue shorts, but it gives the doll structure. Work the body in black so it blends with the crow’s wings and tail if seen from the sides.

- Stuff firmly. Gather the bottom edge closed.
Yellow Beak
The beak is the strongest facial feature. It is wide at the top, narrows smoothly to a rounded point, and sits from just below the eyes to the lower front of the head. Use golden yellow yarn and keep the seam at the underside.
- With golden yellow yarn, CO 26 sts.
- Row 1: Purl all sts.

To shape the beak, fold the side edges slightly under so the center ridge projects forward. Lightly stuff only the upper half. Sew the cast-on edge across the lower face, placing it 3 rows below the eye area. Stitch the sides down evenly, ending with the point centered on the lower face.
White Eye Circles
The white eye circles are large and close together. They sit above the beak and slightly overlap the top beak line. Make two identical circles, then place a black safety eye or button in the center of each circle.
- With white yarn, CO 6 sts.
- Row 1: Knit all sts.
- Row 2: Kfb in each st across. You now have 12 sts.
- Row 3: Purl all sts.
- Row 4: K1, kfb, rep across to the end. You now have 18 sts.
- Rows 5 to 6: Work in stockinette stitch.
- Row 7: P1, p2tog, rep across to the end. You now have 12 sts.
- Row 8: K2tog across. You now have 6 sts.
- Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull closed, and flatten into a circle.
- Make a second eye circle the same way.
Sew the eye circles to the head with their inner edges almost touching. Position them so their lower edges rest on the top of the beak. Attach safety eyes through the centers before final sewing if possible, or sew black buttons firmly through both layers.
Head Hair Loops
The crow has three black looped feathers on top of the head. They are made as narrow knitted cords and sewn in loops. The center loop is tallest, with two shorter side loops.
- With black yarn, CO 3 sts.
- Knit 18 rows in I-cord, or knit every row and seam into a tiny tube.
- BO, leaving a sewing tail. This is the center loop.
- Make two side loops by knitting 14 rows each on 3 sts.
- Fold each cord into a loop and stitch both ends to the top center of the head.
- Angle the side loops outward, matching the playful look in the image.
Body Joining
Pin the head to the body before sewing. The head should be larger than the body, with the beak centered over the torso. Tilt the head very slightly forward so the crow looks friendly and rounded, not stiff.
- Place the stuffed body under the head with the body neck tucked 0.5 inch into the lower head opening area.
- Use black yarn and ladder stitch around the neck join twice.
- Add a little stuffing at the front neck before fully closing if the head dips too much.
- Pull the thread firmly, but do not flatten the body.
Yellow Legs
The legs are slim golden yellow tubes that show below the blue shorts. Each leg has visible vertical knit texture, so work them in stockinette and seam neatly at the back.
Make Two Legs
- With golden yellow yarn, CO 12 sts.
- Rows 1 to 24: Work in stockinette stitch.
- Row 25: K2tog across. You now have 6 sts.
- Cut yarn and thread through remaining sts.
- Seam the long back edge with mattress stitch.
- Stuff lightly so the leg stays slim.
- Gather the top edge slightly and leave a tail for attaching.
Feet and Toes
The feet are flat yellow front pads with three small toe bumps visible in each sandal. The sandals cover part of the foot, so keep the feet rounded and low.
Make Two Feet
- With golden yellow yarn, CO 8 sts.
- Row 1: Purl all sts.
- Row 2: Kfb, K6, kfb. You now have 10 sts.
- Row 3: Purl all sts.
- Row 4: Kfb, K8, kfb. You now have 12 sts.
- Rows 5 to 10: Work in stockinette stitch.
- Row 11: P2tog, P8, p2tog. You now have 10 sts.
- Row 12: K2tog, K6, k2tog. You now have 8 sts.
- BO all sts.
- Make a second foot the same way.
Toe Bumps
- For each foot, thread golden yellow yarn onto a tapestry needle.
- Make three vertical wrap stitches over the front edge: left toe, center toe, and right toe.
- Pull each wrap just tight enough to create a raised rounded bump.
- Secure ends on the underside where the sandal sole will cover them.

Blue Shorts
The shorts are sky blue, high-waisted, and slightly puffy. They cover the lower body and end just above the yellow legs. Work one piece flat with a center split for the legs, then seam at the back.
- With sky blue yarn, CO 34 sts.
- Rows 1 to 4: Work K1, P1 rib across.
- Row 5: Knit all sts.
- Row 6: Purl all sts.
- Rows 7 to 16: Continue in stockinette stitch.
- Row 17: K15, BO 4 sts, K15. This creates the center leg gap.
- Work left leg side first on 15 sts.
- Rows 18 to 25 on left side: Stockinette stitch.
- Rows 26 to 29 on left side: K1, P1 rib.

- Rejoin yarn to right side 15 sts.
- Rows 18 to 25 on right side: Stockinette stitch.
- Rows 26 to 29 on right side: K1, P1 rib.
- BO right side loosely in rib.
Wrap the shorts around the lower body. The ribbed waistband sits under the cardigan, and the two leg openings sit around the yellow legs. Seam the center back. Sew the inner crotch edges together neatly, leaving enough space for the legs to hang straight.
Black Wings
The wings are black, rounded at the top, and shaped into three little feather points at the bottom, like soft mitten fingers. They attach at the shoulder under the cardigan sleeves and extend outward slightly.
Make Two Wings
- With black yarn, CO 16 sts.
- Row 1: Purl all sts.
- Row 2: Kfb, K14, kfb. You now have 18 sts.

- Repeat Rows 14 to 19 for the center feather.
- Rejoin yarn to final 6 sts.
- Repeat Rows 14 to 19 for the third feather.
- Weave in ends and lightly steam flat.
Attach one wing to each side of the body. The top edge should sit just under the cardigan sleeve. Let the three feather points face downward and slightly outward. Sew only the top half of each wing so the lower points remain dimensional.
Black Tail
The tail is visible between the shorts legs as a black teardrop shape. It hangs behind the body and peeks out below the shorts.
- With black yarn, CO 10 sts.
- Row 1: Purl all sts.
- Row 2: Kfb, K8, kfb. You now have 12 sts.
- Rows 3 to 10: Work in stockinette stitch.

- Row 13: P2tog, P4, p2tog. You now have 6 sts.
- Row 14: K2tog, K2, k2tog. You now have 4 sts.
- Row 15: P2tog twice. You now have 2 sts.
- Row 16: K2tog. Fasten off.
Sew the wide end of the tail to the back lower body before closing the shorts completely. Let the pointed end hang between the legs, visible below the blue shorts.
Striped Cardigan
The cardigan is short, open-front, and striped. It has sky blue ribbing at the lower edge, blue front bands, short sleeves, and three flower buttons down the front. The stripes should wrap neatly across the body and sleeves.

Cardigan Neck and Front Finishing
The cardigan should look tidy at the neck and front opening. Because the crow has a large head, the cardigan is designed as an open garment, not a pullover. The blue bands frame the striped fabric and make the small flower buttons stand out.
- Place the cardigan on the crow.
- Use sky blue yarn to sew the left and right neck holder sts to the back neck holder sts with small stitches.
- If the neckline gaps, pick up 30 sts around the neck with sky blue yarn and knit 2 rows in garter stitch, then BO.
- Do not pull the neckline too tight because it should sit below the round head.
- Tack the top corners of the cardigan under the beak area if needed.
Facial Embroidery
The face has very few embroidered details, so every stitch matters. The large eyes, beak shape, and tiny nostril marks create the crow’s expression. Keep the face cheerful and centered.
- Use golden yellow or slightly darker yellow yarn to make two tiny nostril stitches near the upper beak.
- Place one nostril 4 stitches from the left edge of the beak and one 4 stitches from the right edge.
- Each nostril is one small diagonal stitch over 1 knitted stitch.
- Use black sewing thread to secure the safety eyes or buttons again from the back if needed.
- Do not add a mouth line; the pointed beak gives the expression.
Assembly Order
Working in the correct order helps the finished crow look neat. Attach the body parts first, then dress the crow, then add smaller decorations. Pin every piece before sewing because small angle changes affect the character.
- Sew the stuffed head to the stuffed black body.
- Sew the yellow beak to the lower front of the head.
- Sew white eye circles above the beak and attach black eyes.
- Sew the three black hair loops to the top of the head.
- Attach the yellow flower and green leaves beside the hair loops.
- Sew the yellow legs to the lower body, spaced about 1 inch apart.
- Sew yellow feet to the bottom of the legs.
- Sew the black tail to the back lower body.
- Put the blue shorts on and seam them around the legs and back.
- Attach black wings to the sides of the body.
- Dress the crow in the striped cardigan.
- Add flower buttons to the cardigan front.
- Attach sandals to the feet.
- Place the shoulder bag strap over the right shoulder and tack it in place.
- Finish the separate hat, potted plant, and watering can accessories.
Detailed Fit Notes
The head should be about one third of the full doll height. The beak should cover nearly the lower half of the face, and the eye circles should be wide enough to look oversized and cute. If your beak looks too flat, add a small amount of stuffing behind the upper center.
The cardigan should end at the top of the shorts, not below them. If it is too long, fold the lower blue ribbing slightly to the inside and tack it. If it is too short, add two extra stockinette rows before the shoulder shaping on all cardigan pieces.
The shorts should look soft and rounded. They should not be tight around the legs. If your crow has thicker stuffing, add 4 sts to the shorts cast-on and work the same length. Keep the center leg opening unchanged so the shape still matches the image.
Optional Duplicate Stitch for Knit Texture
The photo shows a visible handmade knit texture, especially on the beak, shorts, and cardigan. If your yarn is smooth and the stitches are less defined, duplicate stitch can add small highlights without changing the structure.
- Add 3 short golden yellow vertical stitches down the center beak ridge.
- Add 2 tiny tan diagonal stitches on the beak for nostrils.
- Add a few sky blue duplicate stitches on the shorts waistband to strengthen the ribbed look.
- Add cream duplicate stitches near the cardigan shoulders to clean up stripe joins.
Beginner Tips for Neat Results
- Stuff gradually: add small pieces of fiberfill instead of one large clump.
- Use pins: pin the eyes, beak, wings, and legs before sewing.
- Match stripes carefully: line up cardigan stripes at the side seams before stitching.
- Keep seams firm: toys need strong seams because stuffing pushes outward.
- Hide yarn tails: weave ends into stuffed sections with a long needle.
- Check symmetry: view the crow from the front after every major attachment.
Final Assembly and Facial Detailing
After all parts are sewn, hold the crow upright and check the balance. The head should sit centered over the cardigan, the beak should point downward slightly, and the legs should hang straight from the shorts. Adjust with hidden stitches if one side tilts.
- Secure the flower hair decoration with at least 5 small stitches.
- Reinforce the bag strap at the shoulder so it does not slide off.
- Make sure the sandal flowers face outward.
- Trim loose yarn ends close after weaving them deep into the toy.
- Fluff the hat pom-pom and trim it into a round shape.
Care Notes
Because this crow includes small sewn decorations, flower buttons, and optional safety eyes, it is best used as a decorative handmade item. If gifting to a young child, embroider the eyes instead of using plastic safety eyes or buttons.
- Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
- Do not machine wash if the doll has safety eyes, buttons, or stiff accessories.
- Do not tumble dry.
- Reshape gently while damp and let air dry flat.
Quick Checklist Before You Finish
- The head is round, black, and larger than the body.
- The beak is golden yellow, wide at the top, and pointed at the bottom.
- The eyes are white circles with black centers and sit close together.
- The cardigan has blue ribbing and narrow cream, orange, yellow, and blue stripes.
- The shorts are sky blue and end above the yellow legs.
- The wings are black with three feather points each.
- The sandals are blue with cream soles and small orange flowers.
- The hat has matching stripes and a multicolor pom-pom.
- The shoulder bag has a cream base with blue and rust-orange patterning.
- The potted plant and watering can are completed as separate accessories.
Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines
Store the crow in a dry place away from direct sunlight so the bright yellow, blue, and orange yarns stay fresh. If dust collects on the doll, use a soft dry cloth or a clean makeup brush to remove it gently.
For deeper cleaning, dampen a cloth with cool water and a tiny amount of mild soap. Press the cloth onto the soiled area without rubbing hard. Blot with clean water, then press with a dry towel. Let the piece dry naturally on a flat surface.
- Keep the flower buttons and hair flower flat while drying.
- Do not wring the toy.
- Do not hang the wet doll by the head or bag strap.
- Place tissue under the wings while drying if you want them to keep their lifted shape.
- Store the hat, plant, and watering can beside the crow instead of pressed underneath it.
Your cute crow in a striped cardigan is now complete, with its bright beak, cheerful garden accessories, cozy outfit, and matching hat. The finished piece should look playful, colorful, and handmade, just like a soft little crow ready for a sunny day outdoors.
