Knitting Tutorial: Beagle in Blue Overalls – Free Knitting Pattern

This friendly knitted beagle is made as a soft seated toy with a white-and-brown puppy face, long floppy brown ears, shiny safety eyes, a black oval nose, blue overalls, a green-and-cream striped shirt, a brown crossbody bag, a white daisy hair flower, red sandals, a yellow sun hat, and two tiny knitted carrots. The finished puppy has rounded paws, embroidered toe pads, soft shaping, and a sweet garden-picnic look.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written for a detailed knitted beagle doll worked mostly in the round, with separate flat and circular pieces for clothing and accessories. The beagle is designed to sit upright with legs forward, rounded feet at the front, arms resting beside the body, and long ears falling beside the cheeks.

The blue overalls are knitted as a fitted garment over the body and legs, with front bib, straps, orange embroidered stitches, and small red-orange strap buttons. The striped shirt is visible at the chest and sleeves. The accessories are small but important because they match the photo closely.

  • Finished size: about 11 inches tall seated, including ears.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: body, head, muzzle, ears, arms, legs, clothing, and accessories are knitted separately and sewn together.
  • Main texture: stockinette stitch with firm stuffing.
  • Gauge: tight toy gauge so stuffing does not show.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in warm white for face stripe, muzzle, paws, arms, and feet.
  • Worsted weight yarn in medium chestnut brown for ears, face patches, bag, and small markings.
  • Worsted weight yarn in denim blue for overalls.
  • Worsted weight yarn in cream and soft sage green for striped shirt.

Gauge and Fabric Notes

For a clean toy finish, the knitted fabric should be firm. Aim for about 6 stitches and 8 rounds per inch in stockinette stitch using worsted weight yarn and US 3 needles. If your stitches are loose, move down one needle size.

The toy in the image has visible knitted texture, but the stuffing is hidden. Do not use a loose gauge. A firm gauge gives the beagle a rounded puppy face, sturdy seated legs, and neat clothing edges.

  • Stuff the head firmly so the muzzle sits forward.
  • Stuff the body medium-firm so the puppy can sit.
  • Stuff the ears lightly only at the top if desired; they should stay soft and floppy.
  • Stuff the arms and lower legs lightly to keep a soft plush shape.

Color Placement Guide

The beagle face is mostly warm white through the center, with chestnut brown side patches around both eyes and ears. The muzzle is white and rounded. The ears are long, chestnut brown, and attached high on the sides of the head so they frame the face.

The shirt uses cream and sage green stripes. The overalls are denim blue and cover the belly, hips, and legs. The front bib sits high on the chest with two blue straps crossing over the shoulders. Orange stitches decorate the bib and pocket area.

  • White areas: center face, muzzle, chest, paws, lower arms, feet.
  • Brown areas: ears, eye patches, bag, small toe accents if desired.
  • Blue areas: overalls, bib, straps, pant legs.
  • Green and cream: striped shirt body and sleeves.
  • Accessories: yellow hat, red sandals, orange carrots, white daisy.

Body Base

The body is worked from the bottom upward in warm white first, then covered by the shirt and overalls. You can knit the body in plain warm white because the clothing covers most of it. Keep the shape pear-like, wider at the bottom and narrower near the neck.

  17. Rnd 38: K all sts.
  18. Leave remaining 24 sts live on waste yarn or BO loosely if sewing the head separately.

Striped Shirt Body

The striped shirt is knitted as a short tube that slides over the upper body. It should show above the overalls and around the shoulders. Use cream as the base with soft sage green stripes, matching the visible shirt in the image.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 48 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: P all sts to create a small lower ridge.
  4. Rnds 3-4: With cream, K all sts.

  14. Rnd 19: With cream, repeat K5, k2tog around. You now have 36 sts.
  15. Rnd 20: K all sts.
  16. BO loosely.

Slide the shirt over the body before the head is attached. Position the lower edge just below the belly curve. The upper edge should sit neatly under the chin and around the shoulder line.

Blue Overalls Main Pants

The overalls are worked as two blue pant legs joined into a body section. They should look rounded and slightly loose over the belly, like the photo. The bib and straps are added afterward.

First Pant Leg

  1. With denim blue yarn, CO 24 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: P all sts for a cuff ridge.
  4. Rnds 3-10: K all sts.

  2. K across the second leg 24 sts.
  3. CO 4 sts for the center front join.
  4. K across the first leg 24 sts from waste yarn.
  5. CO 4 sts for the center back join. You now have 56 sts.

  6. Rnd 17: K all sts.
  7. BO loosely.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Pull the overalls up over the body so the legs sit around the puppy’s seated thighs. Sew the back seam closed if needed. The pants should cover most of the lower body while still allowing the white feet to show forward.

Overall Front Bib

The front bib is a rectangular blue panel sewn to the front of the overalls. It should sit on the belly and chest, stopping below the neckline of the striped shirt. The top edge is slightly narrower than the bottom edge.

  1. With denim blue yarn, CO 22 sts.
  2. Row 1, RS: K all sts.
  3. Row 2, WS: P all sts.
  4. Rows 3-10: Continue in stockinette stitch.
  5. Row 11: K2, ssk, K14, k2tog, K2. You now have 20 sts.
  6. Row 12: P all sts.
  7. Rows 13-18: Continue in stockinette stitch.
  8. Row 19: K all sts.
  9. Row 20: P all sts.
  10. BO knitwise.

Sew the lower edge of the bib to the center front waist of the overalls. Sew the sides of the bib lightly so the panel sits flat. Do not sew the top edge too tightly; it should look soft and slightly raised.

Overall Straps

The straps are narrow blue knitted strips that run from the top corners of the bib over the shoulders and attach to the back waist. In the photo, they frame the striped shirt clearly.

  1. With denim blue yarn, CO 5 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Repeat Rows 1-2 until strap measures about 5 inches.
  5. BO knitwise.
  6. Make a second strap the same way.

Pin both straps before sewing. Attach the front ends to the bib corners. Bring each strap over the shoulder at a slight diagonal angle. Sew the back ends to the rear waist of the overalls.

  • Add one small orange stitch or tiny button at each front strap point.
  • Keep the straps snug enough to stay in place but not so tight that the body puckers.
  • For a stronger finish, stitch through the strap twice at each end.

Overall Embroidered Details

The photo shows orange decorative stitching on the blue bib and pocket area. These small details make the overalls look handmade and very close to the image.

  • Use orange yarn or embroidery floss.
  • Make short straight stitches around the bib side edges.
  • Add a small dashed pocket curve on the lower right side of the bib.
  • Add two small vertical orange stitches below the strap buttons.
  • Keep each dash about 1/4 inch long.

Do not overfill the bib with embroidery. The overalls should remain clean and blue, with orange accents placed like little workwear seams.

Head

The head is rounded and slightly larger than the body, giving the puppy a sweet plush look. Work the head mostly in warm white, then add brown face patches separately or with duplicate stitch. The muzzle is a separate oval piece sewn to the lower front.

  1. With warm white yarn, CO 12 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. You now have 24 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: K all sts.
  5. Rnd 4: Repeat K1, kfb around. You now have 36 sts.
  6. Rnd 5: K all sts.
  7. Rnd 6: Repeat K2, kfb around. You now have 48 sts.
  8. Rnd 7: K all sts.
  9. Rnd 8: Repeat K3, kfb around. You now have 60 sts.
  10. Rnds 9-22: K all sts.
  11. Rnd 23: Repeat K8, k2tog around. You now have 54 sts.
  12. Rnd 24: K all sts.
  13. Rnd 25: Repeat K7, k2tog around. You now have 48 sts.
  14. Rnd 26: K all sts.
  15. Rnd 27: Repeat K6, k2tog around. You now have 42 sts.
  16. Rnd 28: K all sts.
  17. Rnd 29: Repeat K5, k2tog around. You now have 36 sts.
  18. Pause and place safety eyes between Rnds 15 and 16, about 9 sts apart.
  19. Stuff the head firmly, shaping the cheeks round.
  20. Rnd 30: Repeat K4, k2tog around. You now have 30 sts.
  21. Rnd 31: Repeat K3, k2tog around. You now have 24 sts.
  22. If sewing to the body, BO leaving a long tail. If using live stitches, keep 24 sts open for grafting to the neck.

Brown Eye Patches

The beagle has chestnut brown patches around the eyes. The patch on each side curves downward near the cheek and blends under the ear line. These pieces are knitted flat and sewn around the safety eyes.

Left Eye Patch

  1. With brown yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: Kfb, K6, kfb. You now have 10 sts.
  5. Row 4: P all sts.
  6. Row 5: Kfb, K8, kfb. You now have 12 sts.
  7. Rows 6-10: Work stockinette stitch.
  8. Row 11: SSK, K8, k2tog. You now have 10 sts.
  9. Row 12: P all sts.
  10. Row 13: SSK, K6, k2tog. You now have 8 sts.
  11. BO loosely.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Right Eye Patch

  1. Make the same as the left eye patch.
  2. Shape it while sewing so it mirrors the other side.
  3. Place each patch around the outer side of the eye, leaving a warm white stripe down the center of the face.

Sew the patches with tiny mattress stitches. The lower edge should sit just above the muzzle. The upper edge should disappear under the ear attachment line.

Muzzle

The muzzle is a rounded white oval that projects from the lower face. It holds the black nose and simple embroidered mouth. Stuff it gently before fully sewing it down.

  1. With warm white yarn, CO 10 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: Kfb, K8, kfb. You now have 12 sts.

  9. Row 14: P all sts.
  10. Row 15: SSK, K8, k2tog. You now have 10 sts.
  11. BO loosely, leaving a long sewing tail.

Place the muzzle centered below the eyes. The top of the muzzle should sit about 2 rounds below the eyes. Add a small amount of stuffing under the center so it becomes softly raised.

Black Nose

The nose is oval, black, and slightly raised. It sits at the top center of the muzzle. A knitted nose gives a soft plush look, but embroidery also works.

  1. With black yarn and smaller needles, CO 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: Kfb, K4, kfb. You now have 8 sts.
  5. Row 4: P all sts.
  6. Row 5: SSK, K4, k2tog. You now have 6 sts.
  7. BO, leaving a long tail.

Sew the nose horizontally across the upper muzzle. Use black yarn to embroider one vertical line down from the nose, then split into a small soft Y shape for the mouth.

Long Floppy Ears

The ears are long, brown, rounded, and hang beside the puppy’s face. The texture should be soft and slightly flexible. Knit each ear flat, then seam or leave as a single flat piece depending on the thickness you prefer.

  1. With chestnut brown yarn, CO 12 sts.
  2. Row 1, RS: K all sts.
  3. Row 2, WS: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: Kfb, K10, kfb. You now have 14 sts.
  5. Row 4: P all sts.

  12. Row 37: SSK, K8, k2tog. You now have 10 sts.
  13. Row 38: P all sts.
  14. Row 39: SSK, K6, k2tog. You now have 8 sts.
  15. BO loosely.
  16. Make a second ear the same way.

Block the ears lightly with your hands only. Do not stretch them. Sew the top edge of each ear to the side of the head from about Rnd 10 to Rnd 16. The ears should fall forward slightly and frame the cheeks.

Arms

The arms are white at the paws and partly covered by the shirt sleeves. Each arm hangs down at the side of the body. The shape is simple, rounded at the paw, and narrow near the shoulder.

  1. With warm white yarn, CO 10 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: Kfb in every st around. You now have 20 sts.

  9. Rnd 20: Change to sage green and K all sts.
  10. Rnd 21: Change to cream and K all sts.
  11. Rnd 22: Change to sage green and K all sts.
  12. Rnd 23: Change to cream and K all sts.
  13. BO, leaving a long tail.
  14. Make a second arm the same way.

  2. Rnds 1-10: K all sts.
  3. BO, leaving a long tail.
  4. Make a second upper leg.

Sew one blue upper leg to each white foot. Tuck the join under the overall pant cuff so the transition looks clean. Sew both legs to the lower front body, angled outward slightly, with the feet pointing forward.

Paw Pads and Toe Embroidery

The front of each foot shows soft tan paw pads. Use duplicate stitch, embroidery, or tiny knitted circles. Keep the details rounded and evenly spaced.

  • For each foot, embroider one larger oval pad near the center lower area.
  • Add three or four small toe pads above it.
  • Use tan yarn and small satin stitches.
  • Add two short black lines near the top of each foot to suggest toe separations.
  • Do not pull the embroidery too tightly because the foot should remain rounded.

Daisy Flower on Head

The daisy is placed near one ear at the top side of the head. It has white petals and a yellow center. The flower should sit slightly above the brown eye patch and close to the ear attachment.

Yellow Center

  1. With yellow yarn, CO 6 sts.

Use orange yarn to make two or three tiny horizontal lines on each carrot. These shallow details make the carrots look textured without overwhelming the small size.

Attaching the Head to the Body

The head should sit centered and slightly forward, giving the beagle a gentle seated pose. The chin should almost touch the striped collar area. Pin everything before sewing.

  1. Place the body upright with the overalls and shirt already fitted.
  2. Center the head above the neck opening.
  3. Angle the face slightly downward so the eyes look forward.
  4. Sew around the neck twice using strong yarn.
  5. Add extra stuffing through the neck before closing fully if the head wobbles.
  6. Weave in the yarn tail securely inside the body.

Check the pose from the front and side. The puppy should sit naturally, with the long ears hanging beside the face and the overalls visible from the front.

Facial Embroidery

The expression should be soft and sweet. The eyes are glossy and round. The nose is black and oval. The mouth is simple, with a short vertical line and a small split curve.

  • Place eyes evenly, about 9 sts apart.
  • Keep the muzzle centered under the white face stripe.
  • Use black yarn for the mouth and pull gently.
  • Add a small highlight stitch with white embroidery thread on each eye if using sew-on eyes.
  • Avoid thick eyebrows; the image has a calm, innocent expression.

Shaping the Beagle Face

For a more realistic beagle look, gently sculpt the eye area after stuffing. Thread a long needle with matching white yarn. Insert at the back of the head, come out beside one eye, go back in beside the same eye, and exit at the back. Pull gently.

Repeat for the second eye. This creates a small indentation around the eyes and helps the muzzle look more rounded. Do not pull too hard, because the face should stay soft and plush.

Assembly Order

The order of assembly matters because the clothing fits closely around the body. Work slowly and pin each section before sewing. This helps keep the final toy balanced and close to the image.

  1. Knit and stuff the body.
  2. Slide on the striped shirt.
  3. Fit the blue overall pants over the lower body.
  4. Sew the bib and straps onto the overalls.
  5. Knit, stuff, and finish the head.
  6. Add eye patches, muzzle, nose, and mouth.
  7. Sew the head to the body.
  8. Attach ears high on both sides of the head.
  9. Sew arms to the shoulders.
  10. Sew legs and feet to the seated lower body.
  11. Add paw pad embroidery.
  12. Add the daisy flower near one ear.
  13. Add the bag strap across the chest and attach the bag.
  14. Make the hat, sandals, and carrots as separate props.

Beginner-Friendly Tips

If you are newer to toy knitting, focus first on firm gauge and neat stuffing. A toy can look very different if it is under-stuffed or over-stuffed. The head and muzzle need enough filling to hold shape, while the ears need to stay flexible.

  • Use stitch markers at the beginning of every round.
  • Count stitches after each increase and decrease round.
  • Use pins before sewing pieces permanently.
  • Use matching yarn tails for invisible seams.
  • For tiny accessories, use smaller needles to keep the fabric tight.

Do not rush the face. The eyes, muzzle, and nose create most of the personality. Take time to center each feature before sewing.

Optional Wire-Free Stability

This beagle is designed without wire, making it soft and display-friendly. To help it sit, stuff the lower body firmly and keep the legs attached flat against the front base. You can also add a small fabric pouch of plastic pellets inside the lower body before closing.

If using weighted pellets, place them inside a sewn cotton pouch first. Do not pour loose pellets directly into the knitted body. This keeps the toy cleaner and safer.

Size Adjustments

To make a smaller puppy, use DK weight yarn with US 2 needles. To make a larger puppy, use bulky yarn with needles small enough for a firm toy fabric. Keep all pieces proportional by changing yarn and needle size together.

  • For a smaller toy, reduce accessory lengths by about 20 percent.
  • For a larger toy, add 2 to 4 rounds to the body and head height.
  • Keep the ears long because the floppy ears are an important beagle feature.
  • Keep the overalls slightly roomy so they look like clothing, not body color.

Detailed Finishing for the Overalls

The overalls should appear soft, rounded, and handmade. Once the bib and straps are sewn, use a tapestry needle to add orange running stitches. Keep them uneven enough to look hand-sewn but still tidy.

  • Add 4 orange dashes down the left side of the bib.
  • Add 4 orange dashes down the right side of the bib.
  • Add 3 short orange dashes on the small pocket curve.
  • Add one orange stitch below each strap button.
  • Use tiny knots hidden inside the clothing fabric.

After embroidery, smooth the blue fabric with your fingers. If the bib curls, tack the lower corners to the body with blue yarn.

Detailed Finishing for the Shirt

The striped shirt should peek out at the chest, shoulders, and sleeves. If the shirt shifts under the overalls, tack it down at the side seams using cream yarn. Keep these stitches hidden beneath the arms and bib.

  • Align the green stripes evenly across the front chest.
  • Make sure the collar edge sits below the chin.
  • Let the sleeve stripes show above the white paws.
  • Do not cover the striped shirt completely with the overalls.

Detailed Finishing for the Bag

The bag is small but very noticeable. It should hang on the front of the puppy, slightly lower than the bib. The strap crosses from one shoulder down to the opposite hip.

  • Use brown yarn for the strap and bag body.
  • Use a tiny tan button or embroidered circle on the flap.
  • Tack the strap to the shoulder so it does not slide.
  • Let the bag rest naturally over the blue overalls.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the full toy from the front before weaving in the last ends. The head should be centered, the ears should hang evenly, and the white center stripe of the face should stay visible between the brown patches.

  • Reinforce the neck seam if the head feels loose.
  • Adjust the ears so they frame the face softly.
  • Make sure the muzzle is centered and lightly stuffed.
  • Secure the daisy flower near the ear with several stitches.
  • Trim and hide all yarn tails inside the toy.

For the final expression, gently press the cheeks into shape. Smooth the muzzle upward toward the nose. If the mouth line looks too heavy, remove it and restitch using a thinner strand of black yarn.

Care Notes

This knitted beagle is best kept as a handmade display toy or gentle plush. Because it has small accessories, embroidered details, and optional buttons, it should be handled with care.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, or small accessories are attached.
  • Let the toy air dry fully before storing.
  • Keep the hat, sandals, and carrots in a small pouch when not displayed.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The puppy sits upright without falling forward.
  • The overalls cover the lower body and legs neatly.
  • The striped shirt shows at the chest and sleeves.
  • The brown ears are long, soft, and symmetrical.
  • The muzzle is centered under the eyes.
  • The nose and mouth are securely embroidered.
  • The daisy flower is attached near one ear.
  • The bag strap crosses the chest diagonally.
  • The yellow hat, red sandals, and carrots are complete as separate props.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, avoid soaking the toy. Use a damp cloth to clean small marks, then press gently with a dry towel. Do not twist or wring the knitted fabric.

Store the beagle away from direct sunlight to protect the blue overalls, yellow hat, and red sandals from fading. If storing long term, wrap the toy loosely in tissue paper and keep the accessories beside it.

  • Reshape ears by hand after cleaning.
  • Refresh the hat brim by gently flattening it with your fingers.
  • Check sewn accessories occasionally and tighten loose stitches.
  • Keep the toy dry before placing it in a box or display cabinet.

Your knitted beagle in blue overalls is now complete, with its garden accessories, floppy ears, sweet face, crossbody bag, sun hat, sandals, and tiny carrots ready for display.
