Knitting Tutorial: Bull Terrier in Blue Overalls – Free Knitting Pattern

This cheerful knitted bull terrier sits upright in soft blue daisy overalls, cream legs, striped sleeves, open sandals, a yellow crossbody bag, and a tiny flower crown between tall pointed ears. The design also includes a matching blue sun hat with a floral band, a small woven-style basket, and a tiny ribbed plant pot to recreate the full garden-table scene.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern creates a seated bull terrier doll with a long oval head, narrow muzzle, upright triangular ears, sturdy rounded body, dangling legs, and small rounded paws. The overalls are worked in denim blue with embroidered daisies across the bib and legs. The sleeves are cream and blue stripes, matching the cozy handmade look shown in the photo.

The finished toy is designed to measure about 12 inches tall from sandal sole to ear tip when knitted with DK yarn and 3.00 mm needles. The proportions are important: the head is tall and slightly egg-shaped, the muzzle is long and cream, the brown face patches frame the eyes, and the ears angle upward from the crown.

The accessories are small but visually important. The yellow bag crosses from the right shoulder to the left hip, the blue sun hat sits beside the doll, and the miniature basket and plant pot complete the garden character. Work firmly so stuffing does not show through the stitches.

Skill Level

  • Level: Confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Main techniques: Knit, purl, increases, decreases, short shaping, seaming, embroidery, small circular pieces, and simple color changes.
  • Construction: Most parts are knitted flat and seamed, with optional double-pointed needle instructions for tiny round accessories.
  • Style goal: A soft hand-knit toy with visible stockinette texture, ribbed cuffs, raised daisies, and carefully placed facial details.

Finished Measurements

  • Total height: About 12 inches from sandal base to ear tip.
  • Seated body height: About 7 inches from bottom of overalls to top of head.
  • Head: 3.75 inches tall and 2.5 inches wide at the cheeks.

Important Construction Notes

The bull terrier is made in separate pieces so the shape can match the photo closely. The head is tall and smooth, the muzzle is not a separate ball, and the brown markings are knitted as side face patches. The ears are firm triangles and should stand upright with a slight outward angle.

The body wears the overalls as part of the construction. You will knit the cream chest and striped sweater first, then layer the denim blue overall bib and legs over it. This gives the visible sweater neckline, ribbed cream collar, and blue pants shown in the image.

  • Use a firm cast-on for toy pieces.
  • Leave long yarn tails on every part for sewing.
  • Stuff gradually, not all at once, to keep the muzzle smooth.
  • Do not overstuff the sleeves or legs, because the seated pose needs soft bend points.
  • Place embroidered flowers after the overalls are assembled so the daisies sit naturally across the front.

Head and Muzzle

The head is worked from the nose area upward. The cream muzzle continues into the center face, while brown side patches create the bull terrier markings. Work carefully and keep color joins neat on the wrong side.

Nose, Mouth, and Eyes

The face should look calm and sweet. The eyes sit high on the brown-and-cream face, and the black nose is centered near the lower muzzle. Use small stitches and check the expression often before knotting.

  • Place eyes between Rows 20 and 21 of the head front, about 8 sts apart.
  • Set each eye just inside the brown patch area, not too far to the side.
  • For the nose, embroider a rounded triangle over Rows 7 to 10 of the muzzle, about 5 sts wide.
  • Use black yarn to make 5 horizontal satin stitches for the nose.
  • Work one straight black line downward for 4 rows from the nose center.
  • Add a tiny split line at the bottom for the mouth, 2 stitches to the left and 2 stitches to the right.

Optional Texture Enhancements

The photo has a soft, slightly fuzzy knitted texture. You can gently brush the brown ear edges and cream muzzle with a clean soft toothbrush, but use a very light touch. Do not brush the embroidered flowers, eyes, nose, or small accessories.

  • Add one extra line of duplicate stitch down the center of the muzzle if you want a stronger bull terrier face shape.
  • Use tiny tan stitches along the sandal soles for a rope-like edge.
  • Add two pale blue stitches on the hat brim to echo the overalls.
  • Work small white highlights beside the eyes with one short embroidery stitch each.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

  • Confirm the head is centered and the nose points straight forward.
  • Check both ears from the front; they should form a wide V shape.
  • Make sure the eyes are level and secure.
  • Reinforce the nose with a second layer of black satin stitches if needed.
  • Smooth the collar upward under the chin.
  • Adjust the flower crown so it sits between the ears, not over the eyes.
  • Trim yarn tails only after all parts are fully attached.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using buttons, safety eyes, or a structured basket base.
  • Press out moisture with a towel instead of wringing.
  • Reshape the ears, overalls, hat brim, and sandals while damp.
  • Air dry flat away from direct sunlight.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

  • Store the bull terrier in a dry place with good air circulation.
  • Keep the toy away from strong sunlight to protect the blue and yellow yarn colors.
  • Use tissue paper to support the ears if storing in a box.
  • Do not place heavy items on top of the hat brim or flower crown.
  • Refresh the shape by gently fluffing the body and smoothing the overalls by hand.
  • If dust gathers on the surface, use a soft dry brush and work in the direction of the knitted stitches.
