Knitting Tutorial: Autumn Acorn Cat – Free Knitting Pattern

This Autumn Acorn Cat is a cozy knitted woodland kitten with a round gray tabby head, bright green-rimmed eyes, a white muzzle, a warm mustard acorn sweater, brown ribbed pants, green strap sandals, a long striped tail, and tiny autumn accessories. The finished toy includes a fox crossbody bag, a removable pumpkin-style hat, small acorns, a mushroom, and a little yarn basket to match the charming fall scene.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

The finished cat measures about 12 inches tall when made with DK weight yarn and 2.75 mm needles. The proportions are designed to match the image: a large rounded head, compact body, short arms, straight legs, visible white paws, and a narrow tail placed between the back legs.

  • Total height: about 12 inches from ears to sandals.
  • Head width: about 4.5 inches across the cheeks.
  • Body height: about 3.75 inches from neck to pants edge.
  • Leg length: about 3 inches before sandals.
  • Hat width: about 4.25 inches across the folded brim.
  • Fox bag: about 2 inches tall, worn diagonally across the sweater.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in light gray, dark gray, white, cream, mustard orange, rust orange, brown, dark brown, green, tan, beige, red, and black.
  • Small amounts of peach or pale pink yarn for the nose.
  • 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop.
  • 2.5 mm needles for small accessories and tight finishing pieces.
  • Two 14 mm black safety eyes or glossy black buttons.
  • Green embroidery thread or thin green yarn for the eye rings.
  • Black embroidery thread for pupils, mouth line, and fox nose.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Removable stitch markers.
  • Small amount of thin cardboard or plastic canvas for the sandal soles if desired.

Gauge

Gauge is important because the toy needs a dense, smooth knitted fabric. Work tightly enough that stuffing does not show through the stitches. In stockinette stitch using DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles, aim for 7 stitches and 10 rounds per inch.

  • Main toy gauge: 28 stitches and 40 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette.
  • Accessory gauge: 30 stitches and 42 rounds over 4 inches using 2.5 mm needles.
  • Recommended fabric: firm but still soft enough to shape the cheeks and body.

Abbreviations

  • CO: cast on.
  • K: knit.
  • P: purl.
  • Sts: stitches.
  • Rnd: round.
  • RS: right side.
  • WS: wrong side.
  • K2tog: knit 2 stitches together.
  • P2tog: purl 2 stitches together.
  • M1L: make 1 left increase.
  • M1R: make 1 right increase.
  • SSK: slip, slip, knit.
  • BO: bind off.
  • St st: stockinette stitch.
  • Seed st: alternate K1, P1, then work opposite stitches on the next row.

Construction Notes

The cat is knitted mostly in the round for a smooth amigurumi-style shape. The body, head, arms, legs, tail, ears, sweater, pants, hat, bag, sandals, and accessories are made separately and then sewn together. Keep seams neat and slightly hidden toward the back or underside.

The image shows a soft plush cat with a large head and a narrow neck. The sweater sits high under the chin with a thick ribbed turtleneck. The pants begin just below the sweater hem and cover the legs to the ankles. The white paws remain visible inside green sandals.

Color Placement Guide

  • Head: light gray tabby sides, white center face, white muzzle, dark gray stripes.
  • Ears: gray outside, cream-white inside, dark gray edge line.
  • Eyes: black shiny centers with green rings and tiny white highlights.
  • Sweater: mustard orange lower body and sleeves, cream yoke with acorn motifs, ribbed mustard neck and hem.
  • Pants: medium brown ribbed texture, straight loose fit.
  • Tail: gray and dark gray stripes, white tip.
  • Accessories: orange pumpkin hat, fox face purse, acorns, mushroom, and yarn basket.

Head

The head is the most important part of this design. It should be round, slightly wide across the cheeks, and softly flat at the lower face. Use white for the center muzzle area and light gray for the tabby sides. The easiest method is to knit the head in light gray, then duplicate stitch and embroider the white face panel.

White Face Panel

The image shows a white vertical center panel from forehead to muzzle. Work this after the head is knitted. Use duplicate stitch so the white blends smoothly into the stockinette surface.

  • Using white yarn, duplicate stitch a center panel 12 sts wide at the forehead, narrowing to 10 sts between the eyes.
  • Continue the white panel down to the muzzle area for 16 rounds total.
  • Shape the top of the panel like a soft inverted triangle by leaving 2 gray stitches visible at each side near the upper forehead.
  • At the lower face, widen the white section to 18 sts across for the two rounded muzzle cheeks.

Tabby Forehead Stripes

Use dark gray yarn and a tapestry needle. The stripes should look like short vertical brush marks. Keep them slightly irregular so they appear natural and match the hand-knit style in the image.

  • Make 1 center stripe from the top of the forehead down 7 rounds, placed exactly above the nose line.
  • Make 2 shorter stripes on each side, each 5 rounds long.
  • Make 2 outer side stripes angled slightly toward the ears, each 4 rounds long.
  • Use split stitch or duplicate stitch, keeping the yarn flat against the knitted fabric.

Cheek and Side Stripes

  • On each side of the face, embroider 3 short dark gray stripes beside the eyes.
  • Each stripe should measure about 4 to 5 knitted stitches long.
  • Angle the upper stripe upward, the middle stripe straight, and the lower stripe downward.
  • Add two small dark gray marks near the lower cheek to create the tabby shading visible in the image.

Muzzle

The muzzle is made from two soft white oval pads sewn side by side. They should sit under the eyes and slightly protrude from the face. The cat has a tiny pale nose centered above the split mouth line.

Left Muzzle Pad

  1. With white yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: K1, M1R, K6, M1L, K1. You now have 10 sts.

Right Muzzle Pad

Repeat the left muzzle pad. Lightly stuff each pad before sewing. Place the two pads together so they touch at the center under the nose. Sew with small hidden stitches around the edges.

Nose and Mouth

  • With pale pink or peach yarn, embroider a small triangle nose over 4 sts wide and 3 rounds tall.
  • Work 5 horizontal satin stitches to fill the nose.
  • Use dark brown thread to make one straight line down from the nose for 4 rounds.
  • Make a tiny curved mouth on each side using one backstitch curve.

Ears

The ears are triangular and rounded at the tips. They sit high on the head at a slight outward angle. Each ear has a gray outer section and a cream-white inner panel. The edge is outlined in darker gray.

Outer Ear

  1. Make 2. With light gray yarn, CO 24 sts.

  6. K2tog twice, then P2tog on the next row. Fasten off.
  7. Sew one inner panel to each outer ear, leaving a narrow gray border visible.

Fold the base of each ear slightly to cup it forward. Sew the ears to the head between Rnds 7 and 17, with the inner edges about 18 sts apart. Angle each ear outward by about 20 degrees.

Arms

The arms are short, rounded, and white at the paws. The sweater sleeves cover most of the arms, so knit the paw first in white, then change to mustard orange for the sleeve. Add small green leaf motifs on the sleeves using duplicate stitch.

  1. Make 2. With white yarn, CO 10 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: K1, M1R around. You now have 20 sts.

  10. Lightly stuff, keeping the arm flexible.
  11. Rnd 23: K3, K2tog around. You now have 12 sts.
  12. BO, leaving a long sewing tail.

Embroider three white paw grooves on each white paw using light gray yarn. Sew arms to the sides of the body just under the sweater yoke, angled downward at about 35 degrees.

Legs

The legs are straight and hidden mostly inside the brown pants. The feet are white and rounded, with visible toe grooves showing above the sandals. Knit the legs separately, then sew them to the lower body.

  1. Make 2. With white yarn, CO 12 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: K1, M1R around. You now have 24 sts.

  8. Rnds 11-20: K all sts.
  9. Stuff the foot firmly and the leg lightly.
  10. BO, leaving a long tail.

Sew the legs to the base of the body with a gap of 5 sts between them. The feet should point forward and sit flat when the cat is placed on a table.

The tail is long, narrow, and striped. In the image, it hangs down between the legs, with a white lower tip, dark gray center bands, and light gray sections. It should be firm enough to hold its shape but not overstuffed.

  1. With white yarn, CO 10 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-10: K all sts.
  3. Change to light gray yarn.
  4. Rnds 11-16: K all sts.

  12. Rnds 37-46: K all sts.
  13. Stuff lightly as you go.
  14. K2tog around until 5 sts remain. Pull yarn through remaining sts and close.

Sew the tail to the back lower body before attaching the pants. Let it hang downward so it appears between the pant legs, just like the image.

Brown Ribbed Pants

The pants are medium brown and have a vertical ribbed look. They are loose, straight, and end just above the white feet. Knit two pant legs first, then join them for the upper pants.

Slide the pants over the legs and lower body. Sew the waistband under the sweater hem so the join is hidden. Leave the bottom cuffs slightly loose around the ankles.

Autumn Acorn Sweater

The sweater is the centerpiece of this design. It has a mustard orange ribbed hem, a mustard body, a cream yoke, brown acorn motifs, green leaf motifs near the lower body and sleeves, and a thick ribbed turtleneck collar. 11. Rnds 29-36: Continue cream yoke.

Acorn Motifs on Yoke

The visible sweater has repeated brown acorns around the cream yoke. For clean results, use duplicate stitch after knitting instead of stranded colorwork. Make five acorns on the front and one partial acorn on each sleeve.

  • Each acorn is 5 sts wide and 6 rounds tall.
  • Use dark brown for the cap across the top 3 sts and medium brown for the nut body.
  • Place the center acorn directly at the middle front.

  • For each yarn ball, wrap orange or green yarn around two fingers 15 times.
  • Slip off carefully and wrap across the center 8 times.
  • Secure with a knot and trim only if needed.
  • Place two balls inside the basket and tack them with thread.

Optional Tiny Pumpkin and Leaves

A small orange pumpkin and green leaf cluster appears near the lower left side of the image. This extra piece is optional, but it adds balance if you display all the accessories together.

  1. With orange yarn, CO 12 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: K all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: K1, M1R around. You now have 24 sts.

Joining the Head and Body

Place the sweater on the body before joining the head. Match the 24 live stitches of the head to the 24 live stitches of the body. Use mattress stitch or grafting to connect them firmly. The head should sit upright and slightly forward, not tilted backward.

  1. Stuff the neck area firmly so the head does not wobble.
  2. Hold the head with the face centered over the sweater front.
  3. Sew around the neck twice for strength.
  4. Pull the sweater collar upward so it touches the underside of the chin.
  5. Tack the back of the collar to the lower head with two hidden stitches.

Facial Eye Detailing

The large eyes are a key feature of this cat. The image shows shiny black eyes with green rings and small white highlights. If using safety eyes, add the colored rings after the eyes are installed.

  • With green embroidery thread, stitch a full circle around each eye.
  • Make the ring about 2 rounds thick so it is clearly visible.
  • With black thread, secure the lower edge if needed so the eye looks round and bright.
  • Add a tiny white highlight stitch at the upper left of each eye.
  • Gently indent the eyes by passing yarn from the back of the head through each eye area and pulling slightly.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Check the cat from the front before closing any final seams. The ears should sit symmetrically, the green eye rings should be even, and the muzzle should be centered below the eyes. The nose must sit just above the join between the two muzzle pads.

Use dark gray yarn to add extra tabby markings only after the face is fully assembled. This prevents the stripes from being hidden under the ears or muzzle. Add short side stripes around the cheeks and a few light marks near the top of the head for depth.

  • Shape the cheeks by gently pinching and massaging the stuffing into place.
  • Keep the chin round but not pointed.
  • Make sure the sweater collar touches the head with no visible gap.
  • Place the fox bag on the cat’s right side when viewed from the front.
  • Angle the arms slightly outward so the sweater sleeves are visible.

Care Notes

This knitted cat is best used as a decorative handmade toy. Because it has small accessories, safety eyes, and embroidered pieces, it is not recommended for children under three years old unless all parts are securely sewn and child-safe materials are used.

  • Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, bag straps, or loose props are attached.
  • Let the toy air dry flat on a clean towel.
  • Reshape the ears, hat, tail, and sandals while damp if needed.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, wide, and slightly larger than the body.
  • The face has a white center panel, white muzzle pads, and gray tabby markings.
  • The eyes have green rings and white highlights.
  • The sweater has a mustard body, cream acorn yoke, green leaf details, and ribbed collar.
  • The pants are brown, ribbed, and loose around the legs.
  • The sandals have tan soles, green straps, and tiny mustard buckles.
  • The tail hangs between the legs and shows gray striping.
  • The fox bag crosses diagonally from shoulder to hip.
  • The pumpkin hat has a folded brim, ridges, brown stem, and side ties.
  • The acorns, mushroom, and basket are finished as matching woodland props.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the rounded shape, avoid soaking the toy for long periods. If cleaning is necessary, press a damp cloth gently onto the stained area instead of rubbing. Rubbing can blur the embroidered tabby stripes and distort the sweater motifs.

Store the cat in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Strong sunlight may fade the mustard sweater, green eye rings, and rust fox bag. If storing for a long time, wrap the toy loosely in acid-free tissue and avoid compressing the ears or hat.

  • Brush away dust with a soft clean makeup brush.
  • Keep the accessories together in a small cotton bag when not displayed.
  • Do not hang the toy by the fox bag strap because it may stretch.
  • Refresh the shape by gently squeezing the head and body back into round form.
  • Check seams once a year and reinforce any loose stitches with matching yarn.
