Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern creates a soft knitted red panda inspired by the image, with a large round head, small upright ears, compact body, short legs, black arms, and a thick striped tail angled to one side. The doll is worked mostly in the round for a smooth amigurumi-style finish.

The outfit is knitted separately and fitted closely over the body. The sage green overalls cover the torso and legs, while the cream shirt with blue stripes peeks out at the sleeves and upper chest. Small embroidered daisies decorate the front of the overalls.

  • Finished size: about 11.5 inches tall using DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Main techniques: knitting in the round, simple increases, decreases, color changes, mattress stitch, embroidery, and small-piece assembly.
  • Construction: head, body, limbs, tail, clothing, shoes, bag, mushrooms, hat, and watering can are made separately, then sewn together.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in cinnamon brown for the red panda head, tail, and face markings.
  • DK weight yarn in cream for muzzle, cheeks, inner ears, shirt, mushroom stems, and tail stripes.
  • DK weight yarn in black or very dark brown for arms, feet, nose, tail tip, and facial details.
  • DK weight yarn in sage green for overalls, shoes, hat, and leaf details.
  • Small amount of dusty blue yarn for shirt stripes.
  • Small amount of red yarn for mushroom caps.
  • Small amount of tan yarn for buttons, sandal soles, bag flap, and watering can if desired.
  • Small amount of white yarn for daisy petals and mushroom spots.
  • Small amount of yellow yarn for daisy centers.
  • 2.75 mm double-pointed needles or long circular needle for magic loop.
  • 2.5 mm needles for small accessories and firmer fabric.
  • Two 8 mm black safety eyes or black beads.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Small wooden-look buttons, 6 mm wide, or knitted button circles.
  • Black embroidery thread for mouth and nose.
  • Brown embroidery thread for bag strap and small face shading.

Gauge

Work firmly so the stuffing does not show through. A tight toy gauge is more important than an exact garment gauge. The sample is designed around 7 stitches and 10 rounds per 1 inch in stockinette stitch using DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles.

  • Head gauge target: 28 stitches and 40 rounds over 4 inches.
  • Clothing gauge target: 26 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches.
  • Accessory gauge target: firm enough to hold shape, usually 2.5 mm needles.

  • St st: stockinette stitch, knit every round when working in the round.
  • Garter stitch: knit every row when working flat.

General Knitting Notes

Most body pieces are knitted in the round from the bottom upward or from the center outward. Leave long yarn tails on all small pieces because the tails are used for sewing. Stuff the head and body firmly, but do not stretch the stitches open.

For the neat plush look shown in the image, use invisible mattress stitch wherever possible. When sewing clothing onto the doll, catch only the inside loops of the knitted garment so the outer surface remains clean and soft.

  • Use cinnamon brown as the main red panda fur color.
  • Use cream panels for the muzzle, cheek patches, inner ears, and tail bands.
  • Use dark brown or black for paws, feet, and the tail tip.
  • The green overalls should sit high on the chest with two shoulder straps and two small tan buttons.
  • The tail should point diagonally to the doll’s right side when viewed from the front.

Head

The head is a rounded red panda shape, slightly wider than it is tall, with a soft oversized toy proportion. The cream muzzle is added separately so it sits raised on the lower front of the face. Work the head in cinnamon brown.

Cream Muzzle Patch

The muzzle is an oval cream panel that covers the lower center of the face. It reaches from just below the eyes to the lower curve of the head, creating the soft white mask seen in the image.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 8 sts to work flat.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Row 3: Kfb, K6, kfb. 10 sts.
  5. Row 4: P all sts.
  6. Row 5: Kfb, K8, kfb. 12 sts.
  7. Row 6: P all sts.
  8. Rows 7-12: Work in St st for 6 rows.
  9. Row 13: SSK, K8, k2tog. 10 sts.
  10. Row 14: P all sts.
  11. Row 15: SSK, K6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  12. Row 16: P all sts.
  13. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.

Pin the muzzle so its top edge sits just under the safety eyes. Sew around the outer edge with cream yarn. Add a small amount of stuffing under the muzzle before closing the final inch so it becomes gently raised.

Side Cheek Patches

The red panda has two cream cheek patches on each side of the muzzle. They are shaped like soft vertical ovals and curve along the lower sides of the face.

  1. Make 2 with cream yarn.
  2. CO 6 sts.
  3. Row 1: K all sts.
  4. Row 2: P all sts.
  5. Row 3: Kfb, K4, kfb. 8 sts.
  6. Row 4: P all sts.
  7. Rows 5-10: Work in St st for 6 rows.
  8. Row 11: SSK, K4, k2tog. 6 sts.
  9. Row 12: P all sts.
  10. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.

Sew one patch to each lower side of the face, angled slightly inward toward the muzzle. The inner edges should almost touch the muzzle, while the outer edges should sit beneath the eyes.

Dark Face Markings

The image shows dark reddish-brown vertical markings framing the cream muzzle. These markings can be created with duplicate stitch or careful embroidery so they look integrated into the knitted head.

  • Use dark cinnamon or chestnut yarn.
  • Work duplicate stitch from the inner lower corner of each eye down toward the side of the muzzle.
  • Make each marking about 4 stitches wide at the top and 3 stitches wide near the lower cheek.
  • Keep the markings symmetrical and gently curved.
  • Do not cover the cream cheek patches; the dark markings should sit between the cream muzzle and cream side cheeks.

Nose and Mouth

The nose is small, black, and triangular, centered near the upper lower portion of the cream muzzle. The mouth has two soft curved lines below the nose, giving the red panda a gentle expression.

  1. Thread black embroidery floss through a tapestry needle.
  2. Embroider a triangle over 3 stitches wide and 3 rows tall on the upper center of the muzzle.
  3. Fill the triangle with satin stitches until smooth.
  4. Bring the thread down 3 rows from the bottom point of the nose.
  5. Stitch a short vertical line.
  6. Make one curved stitch to the left and one curved stitch to the right for the smiling mouth.
  7. Secure the thread inside the head and trim.

White Eyebrow Marks

The doll has two small cream eyebrow marks above the eyes. They are short, slanted, and placed like tiny teardrop stitches.

  • Use cream yarn or cream embroidery thread.
  • Place each eyebrow 3 rows above the eye.
  • Make each eyebrow about 3 stitches long.
  • Angle the inner end slightly downward and the outer end slightly upward.
  • Repeat with matching placement on the opposite side.

Ears

The ears are small rounded triangles, cinnamon brown on the outside with cream inner ear sections. They sit high on the head and lean slightly outward, matching the image.

Outer Ear

  1. Make 2 with cinnamon brown yarn.

Sew one cream inner ear onto each cinnamon outer ear. Fold the lower corners of each ear slightly inward before sewing to the head. Attach ears between Rnds 13 and 20 of the head, about 15 stitches apart across the top.

Body

The body is smaller than the head, with a rounded belly and short lower section hidden inside the overalls. Knit the main body in cream for the shirt area and black for the lower hidden torso, but most of it will be covered by the outfit.

  16. Rnd 23: K2tog around. 8 sts.
  17. Cut yarn and pull through remaining sts.

The cream upper body should be visible above the overalls as the shirt neckline. The dark lower body gives depth behind the overalls and arms, but it should not show prominently from the front.

Striped Shirt Front Panel

The shirt visible at the chest has cream and dusty blue horizontal stripes. Knit this small panel flat and sew it to the upper front of the body before adding the overalls.

  1. With cream yarn, CO 22 sts.
  2. Rows 1-2: Work in St st with cream.
  3. Rows 3-4: Work in St st with dusty blue.

Sew the striped panel to the front upper body so it begins just below the neck and ends behind the bib of the green overalls. Keep the sides smooth because the straps will sit over them.

Arms

The arms are slim and black, with a rounded mitten-like shape. They hang downward from the short cream sleeves and reach the upper sides of the overalls.

  1. Make 2 with black or very dark brown yarn.
  2. CO 8 sts and join in the round.

  8. Stuff lightly, keeping the arm narrow and flexible.
  9. Rnd 18: K1, k2tog; repeat around. 8 sts.
  10. Cut yarn and pull through remaining sts.

Sew the arms to the upper sides of the body at a downward angle. The top of each arm should tuck just under the cream short sleeve, with the paws pointing toward the hips.

Short Sleeves

The cream short sleeves have blue stripes and sit over the tops of the dark arms. They create the soft T-shirt look visible under the overalls.

  1. Make 2.
  2. With cream yarn, CO 18 sts to work flat.
  3. Rows 1-2: K all sts for a garter edge.

  • Place 3 daisies on the left leg and lower front.
  • Place 3 daisies on the right leg and lower front.
  • Use white yarn for petals and yellow yarn for centers.

  2. For each petal, make one white lazy-daisy stitch about 2 rows long.
  3. Make 6 petals around each center.
  4. Keep the petals flat and secure so they do not snag during use.

  6. Rnds 25-29: K all sts.
  7. Rnds 30-32: K1, P1 rib around.
  8. BO loosely in rib.

To define the top center of the hat, thread a length of green yarn from the crown center down through the inside and pull gently. This creates a subtle star-like crown shaping similar to the image.

Mini Watering Can Accessory

The small watering can is knitted in beige-tan yarn. It has a rounded ribbed body, an open top, a side handle, and a short spout with a pale blue watering rose at the end.

Stuff the lower body lightly. Do not overstuff because the can should look hollow at the top. Fold the top rib slightly outward to create the rim.

Watering Can Base

  1. With tan yarn, CO 8 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: Kfb around. 16 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: K1, kfb; repeat around. 24 sts.
  4. BO all sts.

Sew the circular base to the bottom of the can body. Keep the seam flat so the watering can can rest beside the doll.

Watering Can Spout

  1. With tan yarn, CO 6 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-12: K all sts.
  3. Stuff very lightly using a thin strand of fiberfill.
  4. BO all sts.

Sew the spout to the upper side of the can at a rising angle. The spout should point upward and outward. Bend it gently while sewing so it resembles the watering can shown in the image.

Blue Watering Rose

  1. With pale blue yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. Row 2: P all sts.
  4. Cut yarn and gather the rectangle into a small round disk.
  5. Sew the disk to the end of the spout.

Watering Can Handle

  1. With tan yarn, CO 4 sts.
  2. Work 30 rows in garter stitch.
  3. BO all sts.

Curve the strip into a handle and sew both ends to the opposite side of the watering can. Shape it into a rounded loop with enough open space in the center.

Neck Join

The head is large and needs a strong join. Before sewing, place the head on the body and check that the face is centered above the bib. The muzzle should point straight forward, and the ears should sit evenly.

  1. Use cinnamon brown yarn for the first joining round.
  2. Sew through the lower head stitches and upper body stitches in a full circle.
  3. Add extra stuffing into the neck area before closing the last section.
  4. Work a second hidden sewing round with cream yarn where the shirt touches the head.
  5. Gently tug the head forward so the doll has the same friendly upright posture as the image.

Facial Placement Guide

  • Eyes: between Rnds 21 and 22 of the head, 10 sts apart.
  • Muzzle: centered under eyes, top edge 2 rows below the eyes.
  • Nose: centered on upper muzzle, 3 sts wide.
  • Mouth: directly below nose, split into two curved smile lines.
  • Eyebrows: 3 rows above eyes, slanted outward.
  • Cheeks: cream patches at lower sides of face, angled inward.
  • Ears: top sides of head, leaning slightly outward.

Assembly Order

Assembling in the correct order keeps the doll clean and balanced. The clothing and accessories overlap, so attach the base pieces first and add small details last.

  1. Knit and stuff the head.
  2. Add muzzle, cheeks, facial markings, nose, mouth, eyebrows, and eyes.
  3. Knit and attach ears.
  4. Knit and stuff body, arms, legs, and tail.
  5. Sew legs to body.
  6. Place overalls on body and secure with hidden stitches.
  7. Add striped shirt front and sleeves.
  8. Sew arms under the sleeves.
  9. Attach head to body firmly.
  10. Sew tail to the back-right side of body.
  11. Add sandals and sandal flowers.
  12. Embroider daisies on overalls.
  13. Sew shoulder bag strap across the body and secure bag at hip.
  14. Add mushroom decorations and tiny leaves to the head.
  15. Knit the removable hat and watering can accessories.

Finishing the Knit Texture

For the smooth toy appearance, brush the surface only with your fingers, not a hard brush. The stitches should remain visible, especially on the face and overalls. The image has a clean stockinette texture, so avoid heavy fuzzing.

  • Steam lightly from a distance if the clothing curls.
  • Do not press the face flat.
  • Use pins to hold the bib and straps in position before sewing.
  • Hide all yarn tails inside the body or clothing layers.
  • Check symmetry after every major sewn piece.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all pieces are attached, review the doll from the front. The head should appear large and round, the muzzle should be centered, and the green overalls should sit straight. Adjust the tail angle with extra hidden stitches if it droops too low.

Add final small face details with embroidery thread. A few short brown stitches along the lower sides of the muzzle can deepen the red panda markings. Keep these stitches soft and short so the face remains friendly.

  • Secure mushroom bases tightly to the head.
  • Check that the bag strap crosses neatly over the chest.
  • Make sure the daisies are evenly scattered but not perfectly lined up.
  • Confirm the sandals do not cover the whole black foot.
  • Shape the hat brim outward with your fingers.

Care Notes

This knitted red panda is best used as a decorative soft doll. Because it includes small buttons, safety eyes, and sewn accessories, it is not recommended for children under three years old.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if using safety eyes, buttons, or delicate embroidery.
  • Let the doll air dry flat on a towel.
  • Reshape the hat, tail, and bag while damp.
  • Keep away from strong sunlight to prevent fading.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The red panda has a cinnamon-brown round head with cream muzzle and cheek patches.
  • The eyes are glossy black and placed evenly above the muzzle.
  • The nose is a small black triangle with a soft curved mouth.
  • The ears have cream inner panels and sit high on the head.
  • The shirt has cream and dusty blue stripes.
  • The overalls are sage green with straps, buttons, and white daisies.
  • The arms and feet are dark brown or black.
  • The tail is thick, striped, and angled to one side.
  • The sandals are green with tan soles and small flowers.
  • The shoulder bag has a diagonal strap and tiny acorn charm.
  • The head has red mushroom decorations with white spots and green leaves.
  • The hat and watering can are finished as matching garden accessories.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, clean only the stained area whenever possible. Dip a white cloth in cool water with a tiny amount of mild soap, press gently onto the knitted surface, and blot with a dry towel. Avoid rubbing the embroidered daisies and facial details.

For long-term storage, wrap the doll loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Store the red panda flat or upright with the tail supported so it does not bend permanently. Keep the hat brim flat and place the watering can in a small box to protect the handle and spout.

  • Refresh the doll by airing it in shade for 1 hour.
  • Do not hang the doll by the bag strap or tail.
  • Do not use bleach, strong detergent, or hot water.
  • Keep the mushroom decorations from being crushed during storage.
  • Check small sewn parts occasionally and reinforce loose stitches immediately.
