Knitting Tutorial: Nautical Garden Duck – Free Knitting Pattern.

This Nautical Garden Duck is a charming knitted duck doll with a tall green head, rounded yellow beak, bright sailor-inspired outfit, blue trousers, yellow feet in sandals, a small crossbody bag, sea-flower head details, a blue crab hat, and tiny fishing accessories. The finished design is worked as a soft display doll with structured shaping, detailed colorwork, and carefully sewn pieces for a handmade garden-and-seaside look.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Approximate finished height: 13.5–14.5 inches from feet to top of head, depending on stuffing and gauge.
  • Seated height: about 10.5 inches when the legs hang over a table edge.
  • Head width: about 3.5 inches across the widest part.
  • Body width: about 4.5 inches across the sweater.
  • Skill level: Intermediate, but written with careful row-by-row instructions for confident beginners.

Materials

  • DK or light worsted yarn in deep green for the duck head and neck.
  • DK or light worsted yarn in golden yellow for the beak, legs, and feet.
  • DK or light worsted yarn in cream for the upper sweater and sandals.
  • DK or light worsted yarn in navy blue for trousers, lower sweater, cuffs, and zigzag details.
  • Small amounts of burgundy yarn for sweater zigzag stripes.
  • Small amounts of white yarn for neck stripe and eye accents if desired.
  • Small amounts of brown yarn for hand tips and fishing rod handle.
  • Small amounts of tan yarn for crossbody bag and strap.
  • Small amounts of sky blue yarn for the flower and hat.
  • Small amounts of red yarn for the starfish flower and crab applique.
  • Small amounts of black or navy embroidery yarn for anchors, bag netting, and facial details.
  • Pair of 12 mm safety eyes or two large sew-on googly style craft eyes.
  • Four small wooden buttons, about 8–10 mm wide, for sweater front.
  • One tiny decorative button for the bag flap, optional.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • 2.75 mm double-pointed needles for small round pieces.
  • 3.0 mm double-pointed needles or circular needles for main pieces.
  • 3.25 mm needles for sweater body if your fabric is tight.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Stitch markers.
  • Waste yarn or stitch holders.
  • Small amount of craft wire for fishing rod, optional.

Gauge

Gauge is important because the doll in the image has a firm knitted fabric with visible stitches, not a loose floppy texture. Use needles that make the fabric tight enough to hold stuffing without gaps.

  • Main gauge: 24 stitches and 32 rounds = 4 inches in stockinette stitch with 3.0 mm needles.
  • Small accessory gauge: 26 stitches and 34 rounds = 4 inches with 2.75 mm needles.
  • Texture goal: firm, smooth stockinette with rounded stuffed shaping.

Construction Notes

The duck is knitted in separate shaped pieces and then assembled. The head and neck are made as one tall green form. The beak is knitted separately and sewn onto the front of the face with a slight downward curve. The body is worked as a stuffed torso wearing a nautical sweater.

The legs are made separately so the doll can sit with the legs hanging down. The arms are attached at a downward angle from the shoulders. The accessories are small, but they give the design its exact character: flowers on the head, a buttoned sweater, a crossbody bag, sandals with anchors, a crab hat, and fishing pieces.

  • The eyes should sit between Rnds 21 and 25 of the head.
  • If using safety eyes, insert them before the head is fully stuffed and closed.
  • If using sew-on eyes, stitch them after the beak is attached so the expression is balanced.
  • Add one tiny white yarn stitch beside each eye if you want extra shine.

Body Base Under the Sweater

The body is shaped as a rounded seated torso. Most of it is covered by the sweater, but a firm inner body gives the doll the same upright sitting shape shown in the image.

Tiny Sea Garden Pieces

The small pieces near the fishing rod make the scene look playful and handmade. They include a little red crab and tiny shells or fish shapes. These are optional for play, but important for matching the visual style.

Arms and Shoulder Placement

The arms should sit at a relaxed downward angle, slightly away from the body. The sleeves are thick and rounded, matching the cozy knitted style of the sweater.

  1. Stuff each sleeve lightly through the upper opening.
  2. Insert one brown hand tip into each cuff and sew securely.
  3. Pin the sleeves to the body at the side of the cream yoke.
  4. The top of each sleeve should begin about 0.5 inch below the neck opening.
  5. Angle each sleeve downward by about 35 degrees.
  6. Sew around the shoulder edge twice for strength.

Joining the Head to the Body

The head and neck are tall and must be attached firmly. The white neck stripe should remain visible above the sweater collar. The duck should look upright, alert, and balanced.

  1. Stuff the neck firmly, but do not overstuff the lower opening.
  2. Insert the bottom of the neck into the sweater collar opening.
  3. Check that the beak faces directly forward.
  4. Pin the neck in place from the front, back, and both sides.
  5. Use the green yarn tail to sew the neck to the cream collar area.
  6. Make one full round of small stitches, then a second reinforcing round.
  7. Hide yarn tails inside the body.

Sweater Zigzag Embroidery

The sweater has a hand-knit nautical pattern with dark blue and burgundy wave lines. Some of the lines are knitted into the sweater, and some can be added afterward for a clearer finish.

  • Use navy yarn to embroider a broken zigzag across the cream chest.
  • Make each diagonal section about 3 stitches wide and 2 rows tall.
  • Use burgundy yarn to embroider a second zigzag where the cream section meets the navy body.
  • Keep the burgundy line uneven and handmade, not perfectly straight.
  • Add a second burgundy wave around each sleeve to match the body.
  • Secure all embroidery threads inside the sweater so no tails are visible.

Button Placement

  • Sew the first button at the center of the cream chest, just below the collar ribbing.
  • Sew the second button about 0.75 inch below the first.
  • Sew the third button at the transition between cream and navy.
  • Sew the fourth button on the navy lower sweater.
  • The buttons should follow the slightly diagonal front opening created by the sweater overlap.

Facial Finishing

The face is simple, wide-eyed, and friendly. The beak is the main feature, so avoid adding too much embroidery around it. The expression should stay clean and bright.

  • Check that both eyes are level before sewing or locking them in place.
  • The beak should sit centered below the eyes and slightly forward.
  • If the beak looks flat, add a small amount of stuffing under the center.
  • Use a yellow yarn strand to define the lower beak curve.
  • Do not pull the beak stitches too tightly, or the face will lose its rounded shape.

Detailed Assembly Order

  1. Knit and stuff the head and neck.
  2. Knit the beak pieces and sew them to the face.
  3. Add the eyes and facial details.
  4. Knit and stuff the inner body.
  5. Knit the sweater panel and wrap it around the body.
  6. Sew the sweater seam and add front buttons.
  7. Knit and attach the sleeves and hand tips.
  8. Knit the trousers and attach them to the lower body.
  9. Knit the feet, sandal soles, and straps.
  10. Sew the feet to the trouser cuffs.
  11. Attach the head and neck to the body.
  12. Add the head flowers.
  13. Knit the bag, strap, and bag embroidery.
  14. Place the crossbody bag over the sweater and secure it lightly.
  15. Knit the hat and crab applique.
  16. Make the fishing rod and tiny sea pieces.

Shaping Tips for Accuracy

The image has a soft handmade doll style with rounded but structured shaping. The duck should not be floppy. Stuff the head firmly, the neck very firmly, the body firmly, and the arms slightly softer.

  • Use small amounts of stuffing at a time.
  • Roll the stuffed pieces between your palms to smooth lumps.
  • Keep the head taller than it is wide.
  • Keep the beak wide and oval, not pointed.
  • Make the sweater body wider than the neck so the outfit looks cozy.
  • Let the legs hang naturally from the seated body.
  • Do not overstuff the sandals; they should look soft and slightly flat.

Optional Stabilizing Method

If you want the duck to sit more securely, you may add a small weighted pouch inside the lower body. This is useful if the doll will be used mostly as a display piece.

  • Fill a small fabric pouch with plastic pellets.
  • Place the pouch low inside the body before the body is fully closed.
  • Never use loose pellets directly inside the knitted fabric.
  • Do not use weighted filling if the item is intended for a small child.

Safety Notes

  • Use embroidered eyes instead of plastic eyes if making this for a child under 3 years old.
  • Secure all buttons with strong thread and repeated stitches.
  • Avoid craft wire in the fishing rod for children’s toys.
  • Check small accessories regularly if the duck will be handled often.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Before finishing, place the duck on a flat surface and check the balance. The head should face forward, the beak should sit centered, and the body should sit upright with the legs hanging down. Adjust the stuffing through any remaining openings before closing them.

  • Sew the neck to the collar with two rounds of firm stitches.
  • Secure the arms at matching angles on both sides.
  • Attach the bag so it crosses the chest naturally.
  • Sew the head flowers tightly so they do not flop.
  • Smooth the sweater and align the buttons down the front.
  • Place the hat, fishing rod, and crab accessories beside the duck for display.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not twist or wring the doll.
  • Press gently with a towel to remove extra moisture.
  • Reshape the beak, feet, sweater, and flowers while damp.
  • Allow the doll to air dry completely before storing.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To preserve the shape, keep the duck away from strong direct sunlight for long periods. Store it upright or lying flat in a breathable cotton bag. Avoid compressing the beak, flowers, hat, and bag under heavy items.

  • Brush away dust with a soft clean brush.
  • Use a slightly damp cloth for small stains.
  • Let every piece dry fully before storage.
  • Keep wooden buttons dry to prevent swelling.
  • Store the fishing rod and small accessories in a separate small pouch if needed.
