Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This free knitting pattern is written to create a small standing Chihuahua doll with large triangular ears, a rounded head, slim cream legs, a fitted green dress, pink cropped jacket, flower details, and small garden accessories. The finished doll is designed to look like the image: gentle, spring-like, and full of handmade texture.

The Chihuahua body is knitted firmly so it can hold the clothing and accessories without collapsing. The dress has a slightly flared skirt, the cardigan is short and open at the front, and the facial details are placed carefully to keep the soft Chihuahua expression.

  • Finished doll height: about 11.5 in / 29 cm from feet to ear tips.
  • Head width: about 4.25 in / 11 cm across the cheeks.
  • Dress width at hem: about 6.5 in / 16.5 cm when gently flattened.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: knitted mostly flat, seamed, stuffed, then dressed and decorated.

Materials

  • DK weight yarn in warm beige for head, body, ears, arms, and legs, about 90 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in cream for muzzle, paws, and lower face, about 35 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in meadow green for dress and shoulder bag, about 80 yd.
  • DK weight yarn in soft pink for cardigan, sandals, headband, and hat, about 90 yd.
  • Small amounts of white, yellow, light green, dark green, red, brown, lavender, and black yarn for flowers, bees, berries, basket, teapot, and embroidery.
  • Pair of 3.25 mm knitting needles for the doll and clothing.
  • Pair of 3.75 mm knitting needles for the sunhat brim if a softer brim is preferred.
  • 2 black safety eyes, 9 mm, or black beads sewn very securely.
  • 1 black safety nose, 10 mm, or black yarn for embroidered nose.
  • Polyester fiberfill.
  • 4 small beige buttons, about 6 mm wide, for the cardigan front.
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Small stitch holders or waste yarn.
  • Fine sewing needle and matching thread for buttons and eye reinforcement.
  • Optional pipe cleaner or floral wire for the hat brim and bag handle, fully covered and ends folded safely.

Gauge

Using DK yarn and 3.25 mm needles in stockinette stitch, 24 stitches and 34 rows should measure about 4 in / 10 cm. Exact gauge is less important than a firm knitted fabric. The stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through.

  • Stockinette stitch: knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows.
  • Garter stitch: knit every row.
  • Seed stitch: alternate knit and purl stitches, then reverse on the next row.
  • Make 1: lift the strand between stitches and knit into the back loop.

Abbreviations

  • K: knit.
  • P: purl.
  • St: stitch.
  • Sts: stitches.
  • RS: right side.
  • WS: wrong side.
  • K2tog: knit 2 stitches together.
  • P2tog: purl 2 stitches together.
  • SSK: slip 1 knitwise, slip 1 knitwise, knit slipped stitches together through back loops.
  • Inc: increase by knitting into the front and back of the stitch.
  • Dec: decrease.
  • BO: bind off.

Important Notes Before Starting

The Chihuahua in the picture has a rounded face, large upright ears, a cream muzzle, slim limbs, and a sweet garden outfit. Keep the stuffing firm in the head and body, but softer in the ears and clothing. This gives the doll a handmade knitted shape without making it stiff.

For the neatest finish, sew all seams with mattress stitch. When attaching limbs, use strong double yarn and pass through the body several times. The legs should cross slightly at the ankles, matching the gentle seated-pose appearance in the image.

  • Work the face slowly and check placement before sewing permanently.
  • The ears should angle upward and outward, not straight sideways.
  • The cardigan should stop above the dress waistline.
  • The green skirt should flare softly and sit over the top of the legs.
  • Small flowers should be placed in clusters, not in perfect rows.

Chihuahua Head

Use warm beige yarn and 3.25 mm needles. The head is knitted flat from the back lower neck upward, shaped into a rounded dome, then seamed at the back. Stuff firmly as you seam so the face stays smooth.

  1. Cast on 10 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl.
  3. Row 2: K1, inc in each st to last st, K1. 18 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl.

  18. Row 32: K3, k2tog, repeat across. 20 sts.
  19. Row 33: P2, p2tog, repeat across. 15 sts.
  20. Row 34: K1, k2tog, repeat across. 10 sts.
  21. Cut yarn, thread through remaining sts, pull tight, and secure.

Seam the back of the head from the top down, leaving the lower cast-on edge open. Stuff the head firmly, shaping it into a soft round Chihuahua head with a slightly fuller cheek area. Do not flatten the front.

Cream Muzzle Patch

The cream muzzle is oval and sits low on the front of the face. It should cover the lower center of the face without reaching the eyes. This patch gives the Chihuahua the gentle expression shown in the image.

  1. Using cream yarn, cast on 6 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl.
  3. Row 2: K1, inc in next 4 sts, K1. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl.
  5. Row 4: K1, inc in next st, K6, inc in next st, K1. 12 sts.
  6. Rows 5 to 10: Work in stockinette stitch.
  7. Row 11: P1, p2tog, P6, p2tog, P1. 10 sts.
  8. Row 12: K1, k2tog, K4, k2tog, K1. 8 sts.
  9. Row 13: P2tog across. 4 sts.
  10. BO all sts.

Pin the muzzle to the lower center of the face. The top of the muzzle should sit about 4 rows below the eyes. Sew around the edge with cream yarn, adding a tiny amount of stuffing under the center before closing the last inch.

Nose, Mouth, and Eye Placement

  • Place the eyes 10 sts apart, about 13 rows above the lower head opening.
  • The eyes should sit slightly outside the top corners of the muzzle.
  • Place the nose at the upper center of the cream muzzle.
  • With black yarn, embroider a short vertical line from the nose down 3 rows.
  • Embroider a gentle curved smile, 3 sts wide on each side.

To copy the calm expression in the image, avoid making the smile too large. The mouth should be small, delicate, and centered. Add one tiny black securing stitch at each end of the smile so the curve stays neat.

Large Chihuahua Ears

The ears are oversized, triangular, and slightly rounded at the tips. They are knitted in beige with a soft pinkish inner look created by the natural stitch texture. Do not stuff the ears firmly. They should stand up but still look soft.

Make 2 Outer Ears

  1. Using warm beige yarn, cast on 22 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Knit every row for a garter edge.
  3. Row 5: Knit.
  4. Row 6: Purl.
  5. Row 7: K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, K1. 20 sts.

  3. Row 3: K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, K1. 16 sts.
  4. Row 4: Purl.
  5. Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until 6 sts remain.
  6. Next row: K1, ssk, k2tog, K1. 4 sts.
  7. Next row: P2tog twice. 2 sts.
  8. K2tog and fasten off.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Sew one inner ear lining to each outer ear, leaving the garter edge free. Fold the lower edge of each ear inward by 3 sts to create a cupped shape. Sew the ears to the head between rows 9 and 18 from the top, angled upward and outward.

Body

The body is smaller than the head and is mostly hidden under the green dress. It should be firm enough to support the doll and clothing. Use warm beige yarn for the upper body.

  1. Cast on 12 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl.
  3. Row 2: K1, inc in each st to last st, K1. 22 sts.
  4. Row 3: Purl.
  5. Row 4: K2, inc in next st, repeat across, ending K1. 29 sts.
  6. Row 5: Purl.
  7. Rows 6 to 18: Work in stockinette stitch.
  8. Row 19: P4, p2tog, repeat across, ending P5. 25 sts.
  9. Row 20: Knit.
  10. Row 21: P3, p2tog, repeat across. 20 sts.
  11. Row 22: Knit.
  12. Row 23: P2, p2tog, repeat across. 15 sts.
  13. Row 24: K1, k2tog, repeat across. 10 sts.
  14. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull tight, and secure.

Seam the body at the back and stuff firmly. The top of the body should fit neatly into the lower opening of the head. Sew the head to the body with small stitches, passing around the neck twice for strength.

Arms

The arms are simple slim tubes with cream paws at the ends. They peek out from under the pink cardigan sleeves. Make them narrow so the cardigan does not look bulky.

Make 2 Arms

  1. Using cream yarn, cast on 8 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Work in stockinette stitch.
  3. Change to warm beige yarn.
  4. Rows 5 to 18: Work in stockinette stitch.
  5. Row 19: K2tog across. 4 sts.
  6. Cut yarn, thread through sts, and pull tight.

Seam each arm lengthwise and stuff lightly. Sew the arms to the sides of the body, beginning just below the neck. Angle them downward so the cream paws show below the cardigan sleeves.

Legs and Feet

The legs are long, slim, and cream-colored, with small rounded feet. In the image, the legs cross gently near the ankles under the dress. Make both legs the same length before attaching.

Make 2 Legs

  1. Using cream yarn, cast on 10 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 6: Work in stockinette stitch.
  3. Row 7: K1, inc in next st, K6, inc in next st, K1. 12 sts.
  4. Rows 8 to 24: Work in stockinette stitch.
  5. Row 25: K2tog across. 6 sts.
  6. Cut yarn, thread through sts, pull tight, and secure.

Seam and stuff each leg lightly but evenly. Shape the foot area by adding a few extra pinches of stuffing at the cast-on end. Sew the legs to the lower body, spacing them 5 sts apart. Cross the lower legs slightly before adding sandals.

Green Meadow Dress Bodice

The dress is knitted separately and placed over the body. The bodice is fitted and ribbed at the top, while the skirt flares into a soft meadow shape. The neckline should sit just below the Chihuahua’s head.

  1. Using meadow green yarn, cast on 30 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Work K1, P1 rib across.
  3. Row 5: Knit.
  4. Row 6: Purl.
  5. Row 7: K5, BO 4 sts for first armhole, K12, BO 4 sts for second armhole, K5.
  6. Row 8: P5, cast on 4 sts over armhole gap, P12, cast on 4 sts over second gap, P5. 30 sts.
  7. Rows 9 to 12: Work in stockinette stitch.
  8. Row 13: K2, inc in next st, repeat across. 40 sts.
  9. Row 14: Purl.

Do not bind off yet. Continue directly into the flared skirt. The armholes should allow the beige arms to pass through without pulling. If needed, stretch the armholes gently before dressing the doll.

Flared Meadow Skirt

The skirt is the most visible part of the outfit. It should widen softly, with embroidered stems, daisies, and small pink blossoms across the lower front. Use stockinette for the main skirt and garter stitch for the lower hem.

  1. Continue with 40 sts on the needle.
  2. Row 1: Knit.
  3. Row 2: Purl.
  4. Row 3: K4, inc in next st, repeat across. 48 sts.
  5. Rows 4 to 8: Work in stockinette stitch.
  6. Row 9: K5, inc in next st, repeat across. 56 sts.
  7. Rows 10 to 18: Work in stockinette stitch.
  8. Row 19: K6, inc in next st, repeat across. 64 sts.
  9. Rows 20 to 26: Work in stockinette stitch.
  10. Rows 27 to 32: Knit every row for a firm garter hem.
  11. BO all sts loosely.

Sew the back seam of the dress from the hem upward, leaving the upper back open for 1.25 in / 3 cm. Place the dress on the doll and close the back opening with two small stitches or tiny snaps if desired.

Dress Embroidery

The front of the dress has scattered white daisies and small pink meadow flowers. Work the embroidery after the dress is sewn and placed on the doll, so the flowers sit naturally across the front curve of the skirt.

  • Use dark green yarn for 7 straight stems, each 4 to 8 rows tall.
  • Use white yarn for 5 larger daisies across the lower front.
  • Each large daisy has 6 lazy-daisy petals around a yellow center.
  • Use pale pink and lavender yarn for 12 tiny French-knot flowers.
  • Add 5 small light green leaf stitches beside the stems.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Keep the flower group heavier on the lower center and lower left front, like a meadow growing across the skirt. Leave the upper bodice mostly plain except for one white daisy at the center chest.

Pink Cropped Cardigan

The cardigan is a short pink jacket with open front edges, small sleeves, and four beige buttons on one side. It should sit over the green dress without covering the embroidered skirt.

  2. Knit every row until the strap measures 12 in / 30 cm.
  3. BO all sts.

Sew the strap to the upper side corners of the bag. Place it over the left shoulder and let the bag rest on the right side of the skirt. Tack the strap lightly under the cardigan so it stays in place.

  2. Knit every row until the strip measures 5 in / 12.5 cm.
  3. BO all sts.

Place the strip across the head from the base of one ear to the base of the other. Sew it down with small hidden stitches. Keep the band slightly arched, not pulled flat.

Pink Sunhat

The wide pink hat is an important accessory in the image. It has a rounded crown, a soft brim, a green ribbon, and two small white daisies. The hat is not worn on the doll; it rests beside the Chihuahua.

Hat Crown

  1. Using pink yarn and 3.25 mm needles, cast on 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: Purl.
  3. Row 2: Inc in every st. 16 sts.

  1. Using brown yarn, cast on 18 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Knit every row.
  3. Rows 5 to 10: Work in stockinette stitch.
  4. Row 11: K2tog across. 9 sts.
  5. Cut yarn, thread through sts, and pull tight.

Seam the bowl and push the center inward slightly. Add a small circle of stuffing before closing the base. The bowl should stand with a rounded lower edge.

Strawberries

  • Make 5 red berries using tiny knitted bobbles or wrapped yarn knots.
  • Add one green straight stitch at the top of each berry.
  • Sew the berries inside the bowl so they look clustered together.

Mini Teapot

The little teapot is cream-colored with a curved handle, short spout, tiny lid knob, and floral embroidery. It sits near the doll and matches the soft garden theme.

  6. Row 12: Purl.
  7. Row 13: K2tog across. 9 sts.
  8. Cut yarn, thread through sts, and pull tight.

Seam the teapot body and stuff it lightly. Shape it into a small round pot. Keep the bottom slightly flat so it can rest beside the doll.

Teapot Spout

  1. Using cream yarn, cast on 6 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 8: Work in stockinette stitch.
  3. Row 9: K2tog across. 3 sts.
  4. Cut yarn and pull through sts.

Seam the spout into a narrow tube and attach it to one side of the teapot, angled upward. Add a tiny pink flower stitch near the base of the spout.

Teapot Handle and Lid

  1. For the handle, cast on 3 sts using cream yarn.
  2. Knit every row for 16 rows and BO.
  3. Curve the strip into a handle and sew it to the opposite side of the spout.
  4. For the lid knob, make one small cream yarn knot and sew it on top.

Embroider one pink flower and two light green leaves on the front of the teapot. Keep the details small so the accessory stays delicate and balanced.

Knitted Daisy Motifs

Use the following tiny daisy method for the dress, sandals, hat, bag, and headband. These flowers are small but very visible, so work them neatly and keep the centers round.

  1. Thread white yarn onto a tapestry needle.
  2. Bring the yarn up through the fabric where the flower center will sit.
  3. Make 5 or 6 small loop petals around the center.
  4. Secure each loop with one tiny stitch at the petal tip.
  5. Use yellow yarn to make one French knot or wrapped knot in the center.

For the largest daisies on the dress and sandals, make 6 petals. For the smaller daisies on the hat, bag, and headband, make 5 petals. Keep the yellow center small and raised.

Joining the Outfit to the Doll

  1. Slide the green dress over the legs and body before attaching the cardigan permanently.
  2. Pull the arms gently through the dress armholes.
  3. Close the back dress opening with small hidden stitches.
  4. Place the pink cardigan over the shoulders.
  5. Arrange the sleeves so the cream paws show clearly.
  6. Place the shoulder bag strap over the cardigan and across the chest.
  7. Tack the bag in place near the right side of the skirt.
  8. Add sandals after the legs are crossed and secured.

When the outfit is complete, check that the green dress flares evenly. The cardigan should frame the bodice without covering the central daisy. The bag should sit low enough to show its white flower decoration.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Attach the head firmly to the body before adding the final accessories. The head is large compared with the body, so use several rounds of strong stitches around the neck. Add extra stitches at the back of the neck to prevent the head from leaning backward.

  • Sew ears at a high outward angle, with inner ears facing forward.
  • Place the eyes evenly and check that they are level before securing.
  • Sew the cream muzzle smoothly with a little stuffing underneath.
  • Embroider the mouth with a short vertical line and soft curved smile.
  • Add the headband after the ears are firmly attached.
  • Sew the bees, flowers, and leaves in balanced positions along the band.

For the final image-like pose, let the arms rest naturally at the sides. Cross the legs gently at the ankles and position the pink sandals so the daisies face forward. Place the hat, basket, strawberry bowl, and teapot around the doll.

Care Notes

This knitted Chihuahua is a decorative handmade doll. Because it has small buttons, embroidered details, bees, berries, and accessories, it is best suited for gentle display or supervised handling rather than rough play.

  • Spot clean with a soft damp cloth.
  • Do not soak the doll if safety eyes, buttons, or wire are used.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To keep the doll fresh, dust it gently with a clean soft brush. Work around the flowers, bees, buttons, and embroidery slowly so no small detail is pulled loose. If the doll has been displayed for a long time, brush from the top down.

For small marks, dampen a white cloth with cool water and press the area gently. Do not rub the embroidery or face. If mild soap is needed, use only a tiny amount, then press again with a clean damp cloth to remove residue.

Store the Chihuahua in a breathable fabric bag or a clean box. Do not crush the ears, hat brim, or skirt. Place tissue paper under the skirt and inside the hat brim if storing for a long period.

Check the buttons, eyes, flowers, and accessories occasionally. If any thread loosens, secure it immediately with matching yarn. This keeps the doll beautiful and helps preserve the detailed meadow look for many seasons.
