Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms and is designed as a detailed knitted toy pattern for confident beginners and intermediate knitters. Most pieces are worked in the round on double-pointed needles or magic loop, then stuffed firmly and sewn together with careful shaping.

The finished duck has a seated toy shape, similar to the picture, with a large rounded head, soft cylindrical body, dangling legs, short wings inside sweater sleeves, and layered accessories. The sweater is worked separately so it sits visibly over the body and gives the toy the same handmade storybook look.

  • Finished height: about 12 inches seated, including head tuft.
  • Finished width: about 6 inches across the sweater sleeves.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: knitted pieces, stuffed, shaped, embroidered, and assembled.
  • Main techniques: knit, purl, increase, decrease, ribbing, short seams, simple colorwork embroidery, i-cord, picking up stitches.

Materials

Choose smooth DK or light worsted yarn so the stitches look neat and defined. The image shows a dense, tidy fabric with visible stockinette texture, so use needles smaller than the yarn label suggests. This keeps the stuffing hidden and gives the duck a firm sculpted shape.

  • Teal green yarn: 60 g for head, neck, tail area, head tuft, hat, and small details.
  • Mustard orange yarn: 25 g for bill, feet, and lower legs.
  • Royal blue yarn: 50 g for sailor sweater.
  • Warm brown yarn: 30 g for lower body and shorts area.
  • Cream yarn: 20 g for hands, neck trim, bag flap, basket accent, and sandal soles.
  • Golden yellow yarn: 20 g for shoulder bag and bag strap.
  • Rust orange yarn: 15 g for sandal straps.
  • Red yarn: small amount for flower petals.
  • White yarn: small amount for flower center petals and neck stripe.
  • Pale green yarn: small amount for flower leaves.
  • Black yarn: small amount for anchor embroidery.
  • Small yarn scraps: blue, red, teal, and cream for yarn balls in the basket.
  • Safety eyes: two black 10 mm safety eyes, or embroidered eyes.
  • Small tan buttons: two 8 mm buttons for sandal sides and one tiny button or embroidered dot for the bag flap.
  • Toy stuffing: polyester fiberfill.
  • Needles: US 3, 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or circular needle for magic loop.
  • Needles for ribbing: US 2, 2.75 mm, optional but helpful.
  • Tapestry needle: for seaming and embroidery.
  • Stitch markers: at least 4.
  • Waste yarn: for holding stitches.

Gauge

Gauge is important because this toy needs a tight fabric. In stockinette stitch on the larger needles, aim for 24 stitches and 34 rounds over 4 inches after light blocking. A slightly tighter gauge is fine. A loose gauge may let stuffing show through.

  • Stockinette gauge: 6 stitches per inch and 8.5 rounds per inch.
  • Ribbing gauge: firm and compact, not stretched.
  • Important: keep all stuffed toy pieces tight enough that the filling stays hidden.

Important Shape Notes Before You Start

The duck in the image has a large round head, slightly wider than the body. The bill sits low on the face and projects forward in a soft wedge. The neck is narrow and visible above the sweater collar, with a little white ribbed trim between the teal head and blue sweater.

The body is shorter than the head and shaped like a seated oval. Brown shorts are visible below the blue sweater. The legs are long, narrow, and dangling, with the feet turned forward. The sandals sit over wide duck feet and include rust straps plus small side buttons.

The sweater has short sleeves, a ribbed lower edge, a vertical front texture, and black anchor embroidery scattered over the front. A yellow shoulder bag crosses diagonally from the duck’s right shoulder to the left hip. The separate green hat and little basket complete the garden knitting theme.

Main Duck Head

Work the head in teal green yarn in the round. Stuff gradually as you knit. The finished head should be round, full, and slightly taller than it is deep. Keep the beginning of the round at the back of the head so any jogs are hidden.

  1. With teal yarn and US 3 needles, CO 8 sts. Divide over DPNs and join in the round. Place marker for beginning of round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in each st around. 16 sts.

  28. Rnd 43: k all sts.
  29. Rnd 44: repeat k3, k2tog around. 24 sts.

Insert the safety eyes before closing the lower head. Place the eyes on the front between Rnds 23 and 24, about 14 stitches apart. The bill will be centered between them, slightly lower. Stuff the head firmly, shaping it round with your fingers as you fill.

  1. Rnd 45: repeat k2, k2tog around. 18 sts.
  2. Rnd 46: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 47: repeat k1, k2tog around. 12 sts.
  4. Rnd 48: k2tog around. 6 sts.
  5. Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches, pull tight, and secure inside the lower head.

Orange Duck Bill

The bill is worked as a flattened wedge in mustard orange. It is wider at the base, gently pointed at the front, and sewn onto the lower face. A light seam line across the middle creates the soft upper and lower bill division seen in the image.

Upper Bill

  1. With mustard orange yarn, CO 8 sts. Work flat.
  2. Row 1 RS: k all sts.
  3. Row 2 WS: p all sts.
  4. Row 3: kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.
  5. Row 4: p all sts.
  6. Row 5: kfb, k8, kfb. 12 sts.
  7. Rows 6-8: work stockinette, p on WS and k on RS.
  8. Row 9: ssk, k8, k2tog. 10 sts.
  9. Row 10: p all sts.
  10. Row 11: ssk, k6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  11. Row 12: p all sts.
  12. Row 13: ssk, k4, k2tog. 6 sts.
  13. BO all sts knitwise.

Lower Bill

  1. With mustard orange yarn, CO 8 sts. Work flat.
  2. Rows 1-2: work stockinette.
  3. Row 3: kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.
  4. Rows 4-6: work stockinette.
  5. Row 7: ssk, k6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  6. Row 8: p all sts.
  7. Row 9: ssk, k4, k2tog. 6 sts.
  8. BO all sts.

Place the lower bill under the upper bill, wrong sides together. Sew around the edge, leaving the base open. Add a tiny amount of stuffing to create a soft padded wedge. Sew the open base to the face between Rnds 24 and 30 of the head.

📌Thank you for reading the article

Use a strand of mustard orange yarn to embroider one horizontal line across the front of the bill. Keep the line shallow and soft, not tight. This gives the bill the gentle smiling division visible in the reference image.

Head Tuft

The top tuft looks like five small rounded knitted loops gathered at the crown. Make each tuft petal separately, then sew them in a circle on the top center of the head. The finished tuft should sit upright and slightly playful.

  1. Make 5 small tuft loops in teal yarn.
  2. For each loop, CO 5 sts and work i-cord for 10 rows.
  3. Cut yarn, thread through all 5 sts, and pull closed.
  4. Fold each i-cord into a teardrop loop and sew the cast-on edge to the closed tip.
  5. Sew all 5 loops to the top of the head, centered around Rnd 1.
  6. Angle the loops outward like soft knitted feathers.

Small Flower on Head

The flower sits on the duck’s upper right side, near the top of the head. It has red outer petals, a white center, and two pale green leaves tucked behind it. Keep it small so it decorates the head without covering the rounded shape.

Red Flower Petals

  1. With red yarn, CO 3 sts.
  2. Row 1: k all sts.
  3. Row 2: p all sts.
  4. Row 3: kfb, k1, kfb. 5 sts.
  5. Row 4: p all sts.
  6. Row 5: ssk, k1, k2tog. 3 sts.
  7. Row 6: p3tog. 1 st.
  8. Fasten off.
  9. Make 5 petals total.

White Center

  1. With white yarn, CO 6 sts.
  2. Join in the round carefully.
  3. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  4. Rnd 2: kfb in each st around. 12 sts.
  5. Rnd 3: k2tog around. 6 sts.
  6. Cut yarn, pull through remaining sts, and flatten into a small circle.

Leaves

  1. With pale green yarn, CO 3 sts.
  2. Row 1: k all sts.
  3. Row 2: p all sts.
  4. Row 3: kfb, k1, kfb. 5 sts.
  5. Row 4: p all sts.
  6. Row 5: ssk, k1, k2tog. 3 sts.
  7. Row 6: sl1, k2tog, pass slipped stitch over. 1 st.
  8. Fasten off. Make 2 leaves.

Sew the red petals in a small circle, place the white center on top, and add the two leaves behind. Attach the flower to the duck’s upper right head, slightly above the right eye. Use small stitches so the flower sits flat but still looks dimensional.

Neck and White Collar Ridge

The neck is narrow and mostly teal, with a short white ribbed ridge visible above the sweater. This detail is important because it separates the head from the blue sweater and matches the image’s crisp little collar edge.

  1. With teal yarn, CO 24 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-8: k all sts.
  3. Change to white yarn.
  4. Rnd 9: repeat k1, p1 around.
  5. Rnds 10-12: continue k1, p1 rib.
  6. BO loosely in rib.

Stuff the neck firmly but not too hard. Sew the teal edge to the bottom of the head. The white ribbed edge should sit at the base, visible just above the sweater neckline. Keep the head upright with a very slight forward tilt.

Body and Brown Shorts Base

The body is worked from the lower seated area upward. Brown yarn forms the visible shorts and lower body under the sweater. The top can be worked in teal or scrap yarn because the sweater covers most of it, but using teal keeps the toy neat.

  1. With brown yarn, CO 12 sts and join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in each st around. 24 sts.
  4. Rnd 3: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 4: repeat k1, kfb around. 36 sts.
  6. Rnd 5: k all sts.
  7. Rnd 6: repeat k2, kfb around. 48 sts.
  8. Rnd 7: k all sts.
  9. Rnd 8: repeat k3, kfb around. 60 sts.
  10. Rnds 9-18: k all sts in brown.
  11. Rnd 19: repeat k13, k2tog around. 56 sts.
  12. Rnd 20: k all sts.
  13. Change to teal yarn for the hidden upper body.
  14. Rnds 21-30: k all sts.
  15. Rnd 31: repeat k12, k2tog around. 52 sts.
  16. Rnd 32: k all sts.
  17. Rnd 33: repeat k11, k2tog around. 48 sts.
  18. Rnd 34: k all sts.
  19. Rnd 35: repeat k6, k2tog around. 42 sts.
  20. Rnd 36: k all sts.
  21. Rnd 37: repeat k5, k2tog around. 36 sts.
  22. Rnd 38: k all sts.
  23. Rnd 39: repeat k4, k2tog around. 30 sts.
  24. Stuff the body firmly, making the bottom slightly flat so the duck sits.
  25. Rnd 40: repeat k3, k2tog around. 24 sts.
  26. Rnd 41: repeat k2, k2tog around. 18 sts.
  27. Rnd 42: repeat k1, k2tog around. 12 sts.
  28. Cut yarn, pull through remaining sts, and close securely.

Shape the body with your hands while stuffing. The widest part should be around the brown shorts area. The upper body should narrow slightly so the sweater can fit over it without looking bulky.

Legs

The legs are long, straight, and mustard orange, dangling from the brown shorts. They are not overly thick. Attach them toward the front underside of the body so they hang over the table edge, just like the duck in the picture.

  1. Make 2 legs.
  2. With mustard orange yarn, CO 16 sts and join in the round.
  3. Rnds 1-28: k all sts.
  4. Rnd 29: repeat k6, k2tog twice. 14 sts.
  5. Rnds 30-34: k all sts.
  6. Stuff lightly. The legs should stay slim and flexible.
  7. BO loosely.

Sew the top of each leg closed flat. Position the legs about 10 stitches apart on the lower front of the brown body. Sew securely through the flattened top edge so the legs dangle naturally.

Wide Duck Feet

The feet are broad, rounded, and visible inside the sandals. Each foot is knitted in mustard orange and shaped like a soft oval with a slightly squared front. The sandal straps will be added later over the top.

  1. Make 2 feet.
  2. With mustard orange yarn, CO 8 sts. Work flat.
  3. Row 1 RS: k all sts.
  4. Row 2 WS: p all sts.
  5. Row 3: kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.
  6. Row 4: p all sts.
  7. Row 5: kfb, k8, kfb. 12 sts.
  8. Row 6: p all sts.
  9. Row 7: kfb, k10, kfb. 14 sts.
  10. Rows 8-16: work stockinette.
  11. Row 17: ssk, k10, k2tog. 12 sts.
  12. Row 18: p all sts.
  13. Row 19: ssk, k8, k2tog. 10 sts.
  14. Row 20: p all sts.
  15. Row 21: ssk, k6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  16. BO all sts.

Make a second matching foot piece for each foot, so you have 4 pieces total. Place two pieces together for one foot, wrong sides facing. Sew around the edge, lightly stuff, and close. The front should be wide and the back narrow enough to join to the leg.

Attach each leg to the back top of one foot. Use firm stitches through the leg opening and the narrow heel edge. The feet should point forward, slightly outward, with the sandals sitting flat underneath.

Cream Sandal Soles

The image shows a light cream edge under the orange sandal. This small detail makes the sandals look layered. Knit a flat cream sole for each foot and sew it underneath before adding the rust orange straps.

  1. Make 2 cream soles.
  2. With cream yarn, CO 8 sts.
  3. Rows 1-2: work stockinette.
  4. Row 3: kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.
  5. Row 4: p all sts.
  6. Row 5: kfb, k8, kfb. 12 sts.
  7. Rows 6-14: work stockinette.
  8. Row 15: ssk, k8, k2tog. 10 sts.
  9. Row 16: p all sts.
  10. Row 17: ssk, k6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  11. BO all sts.

Sew one cream sole under each orange foot using small whip stitches. Let a thin cream rim show around the edge. Do not overstuff the sole; it should sit flat and stable.

Rust Orange Sandal Straps

The sandals have a rust orange band across the toes and a second strap around the ankle. A small tan button appears on the outer side of each sandal. These straps are simple knitted strips sewn over the feet.

  1. For each toe strap, CO 5 sts with rust orange yarn.
  2. Work garter stitch, knitting every row, for 18 rows.
  3. BO. Make 2 toe straps.
  4. Wrap one strap across the front top of each foot and sew both ends to the sole edge.
  5. For each ankle strap, CO 4 sts with rust orange yarn.
  6. Work garter stitch for 20 rows.
  7. BO. Make 2 ankle straps.
  8. Wrap around the upper foot where the leg meets the foot and sew in place.
  9. Sew one small tan button to the outside of each ankle strap.

Arms and Wings

The duck’s arms are shaped like short wings inside blue sleeves. The visible lower ends are cream-colored rounded hands or wing tips. The arms extend outward slightly from the sweater, not straight down, which gives the toy a sweet relaxed pose.

Cream Wing Tips

  1. Make 2 wing tips.
  2. With cream yarn, CO 12 sts and join in the round.
  3. Rnds 1-6: k all sts.
  4. Rnd 7: repeat k2, k2tog around. 9 sts.
  5. Rnd 8: k all sts.
  6. Rnd 9: repeat k1, k2tog around. 6 sts.
  7. Cut yarn, pull through remaining sts, and close.
  8. Stuff very lightly.

Blue Sleeve Sections

  1. Make 2 sleeves.
  2. With royal blue yarn, CO 18 sts and join in the round.
  3. Rnds 1-3: repeat k1, p1 around for cuff rib.
  4. Rnds 4-18: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 19: repeat k7, k2tog twice. 16 sts.
  6. Rnds 20-22: k all sts.
  7. BO loosely.

Insert one cream wing tip into each blue sleeve cuff so the cream section peeks out by about 1 inch. Sew around the cuff to secure. Stuff the sleeve lightly, keeping it soft and slightly tapered.

Blue Sailor Sweater Body

The sweater is the main clothing detail. It is bright blue with a ribbed hem, short sleeves, subtle front texture, and embroidered anchors. It should fit over the body but still show the brown shorts below. Work it from the bottom up as a separate garment.

  1. With royal blue yarn and smaller needles, CO 64 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-6: repeat k2, p2 around for ribbed hem.
  3. Switch to larger needles.
  4. Rnd 7: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 8: k all sts.
  6. Rnd 9: k18, p2, k24, p2, k18.
  7. Rnd 10: k all sts.
  8. Rnd 11: k18, p2, k24, p2, k18.
  9. Rnd 12: k all sts.
  10. Rnd 13: k18, p2, k24, p2, k18.
  11. Rnd 14: k all sts.
  12. Rnd 15: k18, p2, k24, p2, k18.
  13. Rnd 16: k all sts.
  14. Rnd 17: k18, p2, k24, p2, k18.
  15. Rnd 18: k all sts.
  16. Rnd 19: k18, p2, k24, p2, k18.
  17. Rnd 20: k all sts.

The two purl columns form a soft vertical texture on the front of the sweater. When dressing the duck, place these columns toward the center front. They give the sweater the same gentle structured look visible in the picture.

  1. Rnd 21: k14, BO 8 sts for first armhole, k20, BO 8 sts for second armhole, k14. 48 live sts remain.
  2. Rnd 22: k14, CO 8 sts over first armhole gap, k20, CO 8 sts over second armhole gap, k14. 64 sts.
  3. Rnds 23-27: continue in established pattern, keeping front purl columns aligned.
  4. Rnd 28: repeat k6, k2tog around. 56 sts.
  5. Rnd 29: k all sts, keeping purl columns if they occur.
  6. Rnd 30: repeat k5, k2tog around. 48 sts.
  7. Rnd 31: k all sts.
  8. Rnd 32: repeat k4, k2tog around. 40 sts.
  9. Switch to smaller needles.
  10. Rnds 33-36: repeat k2, p2 around for neck rib.
  11. BO loosely in rib.

Weave in ends. Slide the sweater over the body before final head attachment if you prefer an easier fit. The ribbed hem should stop just above the brown shorts, leaving a visible brown band below.

Joining Sleeves to Sweater

Place the sleeves into the armholes from inside the sweater. The sleeve top should meet the armhole edge smoothly. Sew around each armhole with blue yarn. Angle the arms downward and slightly outward, matching the relaxed pose in the image.

  • Right sleeve: angle about 25 degrees away from the body.
  • Left sleeve: angle about 15 degrees away from the body.
  • Cream wing tips: leave visible beyond the blue cuffs.
  • Stuffing: keep the sleeves soft, not firm.

Anchor Embroidery on Sweater

The sweater front has small black anchor motifs. They are embroidered after knitting, which is easier than colorwork and gives the handmade look shown in the image. Use black yarn split into a thinner strand if your yarn is bulky.

Make 6 anchors on the sweater front. Place 3 on the duck’s right side and 3 on the duck’s left side. Keep the center purl texture clear. Each anchor should be about 5 stitches tall and 3 stitches wide.

  1. Bring black yarn up at the top of the anchor.
  2. Make one vertical stitch downward over 4 knitted rows.
  3. Make a small horizontal stitch across the top.
  4. Make a curved lower arm by stitching diagonally down left, then slightly up.
  5. Repeat on the right side to form a hook shape.
  6. Add a tiny center stitch at the lower point to finish the anchor.

Do not pull the embroidery too tightly. The anchors should rest on the surface of the knitted sweater. Space them casually so they look like a playful sailor print rather than a rigid chart.

Optional Front Sweater Pocket Texture

The image shows a subtle rounded pocket-like texture on one lower side of the sweater. To recreate it, use blue yarn and duplicate stitch or surface stitching. Place it on the lower front left side, just above the hem.

  1. Mark a U shape about 10 stitches wide and 8 rows tall.
  2. Use blue yarn to sew small surface stitches following the U shape.
  3. Add two short vertical stitches at the top corners.
  4. Keep the pocket subtle so the black anchors remain visible.

Yellow Shoulder Bag

The small shoulder bag hangs diagonally across the sweater. It is golden yellow with a cream flap and a tiny flower or button detail. The bag rests at the duck’s left hip, while the strap crosses from the right shoulder.

Bag Body

  1. With golden yellow yarn, CO 18 sts. Work flat.
  2. Rows 1-2: knit all sts for a garter base.
  3. Row 3 RS: k all sts.
  4. Row 4 WS: p all sts.
  5. Rows 5-20: continue stockinette.
  6. Rows 21-22: knit all sts.

Sew the cream flap to the back top edge of the yellow pouch. Fold it over the front. Add a tiny embroidered yellow flower with a white center or sew on one small button. Keep the flap rounded and centered.

Bag Strap

  1. With golden yellow yarn, CO 4 sts.
  2. Work i-cord for 70 rows, or until the strap crosses comfortably from right shoulder to left hip.
  3. BO and weave in ends.
  4. Sew one end to each side of the bag.
  5. Place the strap over the sweater after the duck is assembled.

Matching Green Hat

The small hat sits beside the duck in the image. It is teal green with a ribbed brim and a pom-pom top. This accessory is not worn in the main pose, but it is important to include because it appears clearly on the table.

  1. With teal yarn and smaller needles, CO 44 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnds 1-8: repeat k2, p2 around for ribbed brim.
  3. Switch to larger needles.

  14. Rnd 28: repeat k4, k2tog around. 20 sts.
  15. Rnd 29: repeat k3, k2tog around. 16 sts.
  16. Rnd 30: repeat k2, k2tog around. 12 sts.
  17. Cut yarn, pull through remaining sts, and close.

Make a small teal pom-pom about 1.25 inches wide. Trim it into a neat round shape and sew it firmly to the top of the hat. Lightly block the brim so it stands upright like the hat in the picture.

Small Woven-Style Basket

The basket is cream-tan and holds tiny yarn balls. Although it is a small prop, it adds a lot of charm. Work the basket tightly in garter and stockinette textures, then add a handle and several little colored yarn balls inside.

Basket Base and Sides

  1. With cream yarn, CO 10 sts. Work flat.
  2. Rows 1-8: knit every row.
  3. Pick up and knit 8 sts along the first side, 10 sts along the cast-on edge, and 8 sts along the second side. 36 sts total.
  4. Join in the round.
  5. Rnd 1: p all sts to create a turning ridge.
  6. Rnds 2-4: k all sts.
  7. Rnd 5: repeat k1, p1 around.
  8. Rnd 6: repeat p1, k1 around.
  9. Rnds 7-10: repeat Rnds 5 and 6 twice more for woven texture.
  10. Rnds 11-13: k all sts.
  11. Rnd 14: p all sts for rim ridge.
  12. BO loosely.

Fold the rim slightly outward if desired. The basket should be shallow and oval, not tall. Add a little stuffing or yarn scraps inside before placing the mini yarn balls so it appears full.

Basket Handle

  1. With cream yarn, CO 4 sts.
  2. Work i-cord for 28 rows.
  3. BO.
  4. Sew one end to each side of the basket rim.
  5. Arch the handle gently over the basket.

Mini Yarn Balls

  1. Make 4 mini balls in teal, red, blue, and cream yarn.
  2. For each ball, CO 6 sts and join in the round.
  3. Rnd 1: kfb in each st around. 12 sts.
  4. Rnds 2-4: k all sts.
  5. Rnd 5: k2tog around. 6 sts.
  6. Stuff with yarn tails and close tightly.
  7. Wrap a thin strand of matching yarn around each ball twice and secure.

Place the mini yarn balls in the basket and tack them down with a hidden stitch so they do not fall out. The colored balls should peek above the rim, matching the bright accessory detail in the image.

Attaching the Head, Body, and Sweater

Dress the body in the blue sweater before sewing the head and neck in place permanently. The sweater hem should sit over the upper brown shorts, leaving the brown lower section visible. The sleeves should rest at the sides, with cream wing tips showing.

  1. Slide the sweater over the body and adjust the front texture to face forward.
  2. Place the neck on top of the body, centered inside the sweater neckline.
  3. Sew the lower teal neck edge firmly to the top of the body.
  4. Sew the head to the top of the neck, keeping the bill centered over the sweater front.
  5. Add extra stitches at the back of the neck for support.
  6. Check that the head sits upright with a gentle forward tilt.

The neck seam should be hidden by the white ribbed ridge and sweater neckline. If the head wobbles, use a long strand of teal yarn to stitch from the back of the head down into the body several times.

Facial Placement and Expression

The face should look calm, friendly, and balanced. The black eyes sit slightly above the bill line, with the bill centered between them. The flower adds asymmetry, so keep the eye placement even and the head tuft centered to maintain balance.

  • Eye height: between Rnds 23 and 24 of the head.
  • Eye spacing: about 14 stitches apart.
  • Bill top edge: around Rnd 25.
  • Bill lower edge: around Rnd 31.
  • Flower placement: upper right side of head, slightly above the right eye.
  • Tuft placement: directly on top center of head.

For embroidered eyes, use black yarn and satin stitch a round oval about 4 stitches wide and 5 rows tall. Add a tiny white highlight with one small stitch if desired. Keep the expression gentle and simple.

Detailed Clothing Fit

The clothing should not be tight enough to distort the body. The sweater in the image looks soft, slightly oversized, and handmade. The sleeves are short and straight. The ribbed hem and neckline help the garment keep shape while still looking cozy.

  • The blue sweater should cover most of the torso.
  • The brown shorts should show below the sweater hem by about 1 inch.
  • The sleeves should reach just past the upper arms.
  • The cream wing tips should extend from the cuffs by about 1 inch.
  • The yellow bag should sit on the front left hip, not centered.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Use a long tapestry needle and matching yarn for each seam. Sew every piece with small, firm stitches. Check the pose from the front often, because toy assembly can shift. The duck should sit neatly with the legs dangling forward and the sandals visible.

  1. Sew the legs to the lower front of the brown body.
  2. Sew the feet to the legs, facing forward.
  3. Add cream soles and rust sandal straps.
  4. Secure the sweater around the neckline with a few hidden blue stitches if needed.
  5. Attach the sleeves and wing tips evenly.
  6. Sew the flower and tuft to the head.
  7. Place the shoulder bag strap diagonally across the body.
  8. Set the hat and basket beside the finished duck for display.

Use black yarn to add tiny nostril stitches on the upper bill if you want extra detail. Place one small stitch on each side of the bill, about 3 stitches from the center. Keep them subtle so the bill remains soft and cheerful.

Care Notes

This knitted duck is best treated as a decorative handmade item. If safety eyes or buttons are used, it is not suitable for children under 3 years old. For a child-safe version, embroider the eyes and replace all buttons with stitched circles.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if the toy includes buttons or safety eyes.
  • Press out moisture gently with a towel.
  • Air dry flat in a shaded place.
  • Reshape the bill, head, sweater, and sandals while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, firm, and slightly larger than the body.
  • The orange bill is centered and lightly stuffed.
  • The eyes are even and glossy or neatly embroidered.
  • The blue sweater shows ribbing, anchors, and front texture.
  • The brown shorts remain visible below the sweater.
  • The legs hang forward naturally.
  • The sandals have cream soles, rust straps, and side buttons.
  • The yellow shoulder bag crosses diagonally and rests at the hip.
  • The flower, tuft, hat, and basket are all included.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the duck away from direct sunlight to protect the teal, blue, and orange yarn colors. Keep the hat and basket beside the duck in a dry display area. If dust collects, use a soft brush and gentle strokes following the knitted fabric direction.

For long-term storage, wrap the toy loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton cloth. Do not compress the head, bill, sandals, or basket handle. Add a small lavender sachet nearby if desired, but do not let oils touch the yarn directly.

After cleaning, always let the toy dry completely before storing. Moisture can flatten the stuffing and weaken sewn details. Once dry, fluff the pom-pom, smooth the sweater hem, straighten the bag strap, and check the flower petals so the duck keeps its cheerful display shape.
