Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Pattern Overview

This pattern is written in US English knitting terms and is worked mainly in the round on double-pointed needles or a long circular needle using magic loop. The puppy is shaped with firm stuffing, smooth stockinette fabric, and small sewn details so the finished toy has the same soft handmade look as the image.

The main dog is beige with a large round head, slightly narrow neck, seated body shape, slim arms, short legs, oversized striped shoes, and very long fluffy ears. The overalls are knitted as part of the lower body, with separate straps sewn to the chest. The accessories are small but important for matching the picture.

  • Finished size: about 10.5 in / 27 cm tall from shoe sole to top of head, not including the hat pom-pom.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate.
  • Construction: legs, body, head, arms, ears, shoes, hat, bag, basket, and watering can are knitted separately and sewn together.
  • Main texture: stockinette in the round, with garter or ribbed edges where needed.
  • Stripe style: 2-round stripes in cream and sky blue for overalls, shoes, socks, and hat.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn in warm beige for the dog body, about 120 yd.
  • Worsted weight yarn in sky blue for overalls, shoes, hat, and bag, about 90 yd.
  • Worsted weight yarn in cream for stripes, socks, hat, and accessories, about 70 yd.
  • Textured eyelash, bouclé, or brushed yarn in tan beige for the floppy ears, about 45 yd.
  • Small amounts of brown, peach, mint, red, green, yellow, and white yarn for embroidery and accessories.
  • US size 3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles or circular needle for magic loop.
  • US size 2 / 2.75 mm needles for tighter accessory pieces.
  • Two 9 mm black safety eyes.
  • Small amount of pale blue yarn or felt-style knitted eye rims.
  • Two 8 mm cream buttons for the overall straps.
  • Six tiny tan beads for the shoe decoration, optional.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors, pins, and row counter.

Gauge and Fabric Notes

Gauge: 6 stitches and 8 rounds = 1 in / 2.5 cm in stockinette using US size 3 needles. Exact gauge is less important than creating a dense fabric that does not show stuffing. If your stitches look loose, go down one needle size.

The pictured toy has a smooth firm body with visible vertical knit columns. Stuff the head and body firmly, but do not stretch the stitches. The arms and legs should be stuffed lightly so they stay soft. The ears should be fluffy and relaxed, not stiff.

  • Use beige yarn for all plain dog parts unless the instructions say otherwise.
  • Use sky blue and cream stripes for the overalls, shoes, socks, and hat.
  • Carry the unused stripe color loosely up the inside when stripes are only 2 rounds apart.
  • When sewing pieces, use mattress stitch or small whipstitches with matching yarn.

Muzzle Shaping and Nose

The dog in the image has no separate protruding snout, but the nose area is softly defined with embroidery. To recreate that look, use duplicate stitch and gentle thread sculpting rather than a bulky knitted muzzle.

  1. Thread a long strand of A through the base of the head. Enter at the neck point and come out below the center of the face.
  2. Take a tiny horizontal stitch under the face, then return to the neck point. Pull gently to create a soft lower-face hollow.
  3. Repeat once more on each side of the face, keeping the shaping subtle.
  4. With dark brown E, embroider a rounded triangular nose over 5 sts wide and 4 rows tall, centered between the eyes and about 5 rounds below them.
  5. Make a straight vertical mouth line from the lower point of the nose down 6 rows.
  6. Add one tiny stitch at the bottom if you want the mouth line slightly thicker, as shown in the picture.

Blue Eye Rims

  1. With pale blue yarn and US size 2 needles, CO 12 sts.
  2. Row 1: K all sts.
  3. BO loosely, leaving a 10 in tail.
  4. Curve the strip into a ring around one safety eye. Sew the ends together and stitch it neatly around the eye.
  5. Repeat for the second eye. The blue should show mostly under and beside the black eye, like a soft highlight.

Body With Striped Overalls

The body starts at the lower edge of the overalls and works upward. The striped area should be broad and rounded, with the blue bib and straps added separately. Keep the stripe tension even so the body does not pucker.

Facial Embroidery and Expression

The puppy’s face should look gentle and simple. Keep the features centered, with the eyes wide apart and the nose low enough to leave a rounded forehead. The long ears will frame the face, so finish the embroidery before sewing the ears permanently.

  • Place the black safety eyes evenly and add pale blue rims after the head is stuffed.
  • Use dark brown yarn for the nose. Keep the nose oval-triangle shaped, not too sharp.
  • Make the mouth a single vertical line. Do not add a wide smile if you want to match the image.
  • Thread sculpt gently under the eyes if the head looks too flat.
  • Brush the ears lightly away from the face so the eye area stays visible.

Assembly Order

Assembly determines the final character of the toy. Pin every piece before sewing. The pictured dog sits upright with the head centered, ears hanging down, arms at the sides, and shoes pointing forward.

  1. Stuff the body and head. Sew the head to the neck using the long body tail.
  2. Sew the legs to the underside of the body, keeping the socks and shoes aligned forward.
  3. Sew the shoes to the lower sock section. The rounded toe should face outward and slightly upward.
  4. Sew the arms to the sides of the upper body, just below the neck.
  5. Sew the tail to the back, above the lower overall stripe line.
  6. Pin both ears to the sides of the head. Check that they hang evenly, then sew securely.
  7. Sew the overall bib to the front body.
  8. Add the straps and buttons.
  9. Embroider small flowers on the overalls.
  10. Place the bag strap diagonally across the chest and tack it down at the shoulder and hip.
  11. Finish the hat, basket, fruit, and watering can as separate accessories.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After all main pieces are attached, look at the toy from the front, side, and top. Adjust the ears so they frame the face symmetrically. Add final tiny stitches to secure the bag strap, overall straps, and shoe beads so they stay neat during handling.

  • Use matching yarn tails to close any visible gaps at seams.
  • Trim only the fluffy ear yarn, not the body stitches.
  • Check that both eyes are level before adding the final blue rims.
  • Add one extra stitch at the nose base if the mouth line looks too thin.
  • Steam lightly from a distance if the overalls curl, but do not press the stuffing flat.

Care Notes

This knitted puppy is best treated as a decorative handmade toy. Because it has buttons, beads, and small accessories, it is not intended for babies or pets. For a child-safe version, embroider the eyes, buttons, and beads instead of using attached pieces.

  • Spot clean with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if you used safety eyes, beads, or fluffy ear yarn.
  • Lay flat to dry on a towel.
  • Reshape the head, ears, and shoes while damp.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, larger than the body, and firmly stuffed.
  • The long fluffy ears hang to shoulder level or slightly below.
  • The overalls have narrow cream and blue stripes with a blue bib.
  • Two cream buttons sit at the top of the straps.
  • The shoes are rounded, striped, and decorated with tiny tan bead accents.
  • The shoulder bag is blue with a pale heart patch.
  • The hat has matching blue and cream stripes with a pom-pom.
  • The basket, fruit, and watering can are small enough to look like accessories, not main toys.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To keep the puppy looking close to the original shape, store it upright or lying flat with the ears gently spread. Avoid hanging it by the bag strap or hat, because small knitted accessories can stretch over time.

  • Use a lint roller very lightly on the body, avoiding the fluffy ears.
  • For dusty ears, shake gently and separate fibers with your fingers.
  • Keep the toy away from direct sunlight to protect the blue and cream stripes.
  • Store tiny accessories in a small cloth bag when not displayed.
  • If the shoes flatten, massage the toe area gently to move the stuffing back into place.

Your cute dog in striped overalls is now complete, with its floppy textured ears, soft beige face, blue-and-cream outfit, matching hat, shoulder bag, flower details, basket, and watering can. Arrange the accessories beside the puppy for the full garden-inspired display shown in the reference image.
