Knitting Tutorial: Tweety Bird in Garden Outfit – Free Knitting Pattern

This cheerful garden bird doll is knitted as a soft yellow character with an oversized round head, sweet embroidered eyes, orange beak, slim wings, orange legs, brown sandals, and a green garden romper with beige floral shorts. The outfit includes tiny shoulder buttons, embroidered flowers, bees, a crossbody garden bag with a watering-can motif, a strawberry charm, plus matching garden props: a green flower hat, a small watering can, and a little potted sprout.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size and Construction Notes

This pattern is written to create a plush garden bird doll with the same rounded proportions shown in the image. The finished toy measures about 13 inches tall from the bottom of the sandals to the top of the head flowers, when worked at the listed gauge.

The doll is knitted mostly in the round. The body, head, wings, legs, sandals, romper, small bag, hat, and garden props are made as separate pieces, then assembled carefully. The head is large and heart-rounded, the body is smaller, and the feet are broad so the doll sits nicely on a shelf or table.

Important Gauge and Stuffing Notes

The fabric must be firm enough that stuffing does not show through. If your stitches look loose, go down one needle size. If the doll becomes too small and stiff, stay with the listed needle size but stuff slowly and evenly.

For the pictured rounded shape, do not overstuff the neck or lower body. The head should be full and smooth, while the body should remain slightly smaller and softer. The feet and sandals should be packed firmly so the doll sits flat.

Main Head

The head is the largest part of the doll. It has a soft heart-like curve, wide cheeks, and a lightly narrowed lower face. Work in yellow yarn. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.

Begin stuffing the head. Push stuffing into the crown first, then fill the cheeks. Shape the head with your hands so the top is rounded and the lower face gently narrows.

  1. Rnd 56: rep k1, k2tog around. 16 sts.
  2. Rnd 57: k2tog around. 8 sts.
  3. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread through remaining sts, pull closed, and secure.

Head Shaping for Cheeks and Face

The pictured face has soft cheek fullness and a small indentation around the beak. This shaping is made with thread after stuffing, not by adding extra pieces.

  1. Thread a long strand of yellow yarn onto a tapestry needle.
  2. Insert needle at the lower back of the head and exit at the center front, about 8 rounds above the bottom closing point.
  3. Move 3 sts to the left, insert needle, and exit at the back again.
  4. Pull gently to make a shallow cheek curve. Do not make a deep dimple.
  5. Repeat on the right side, matching the same height and tension.
  6. Secure the yarn at the back of the head and bury the tail.

Body Base

The body is smaller than the head and shaped like a soft pear under the garden romper. The yellow upper chest peeks out at the shoulders and sides.

  1. With Yarn A, CO 12 sts. Join in the round.
  2. Rnd 1: k all sts. 12 sts.
  3. Rnd 2: kfb in each st around. 24 sts.

  18. Rnd 35: k all sts.

  2. Rnd 38: k all sts.
  3. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

After the doll is fully assembled, check the face from the front and side. The eyes should be even, the beak should sit centered between them, and the lashes should curve outward without pulling the knitted fabric.

  • Use black embroidery floss to refine the brows if one side looks higher than the other.
  • Add a tiny white stitch to each pupil for the bright eye highlight.
  • Pin the wings before sewing so both tips end at the same body height.
  • Make sure the bag hangs diagonally from shoulder to hip, not straight down.
  • Use small hidden stitches to secure the sandals so they do not twist.

Care Notes

This knitted toy is best handled gently because it includes embroidery, small flowers, buttons, and tiny accessories. Spot clean with cool water and mild soap. Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, or glued details are used.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is round, full, and larger than the body.
  • The yellow wings hang neatly at both sides.
  • The green romper has two tan buttons and crossed straps.
  • The beige shorts include floral garden embroidery.
  • The orange feet show two raised toes in each sandal.
  • The bag has a white watering-can motif and a red strawberry charm.
  • The head includes flowers, black sprigs, lashes, brows, and a small bee.
  • The hat, watering can, and potted sprout are finished as matching props.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

To keep the doll bright and smooth, store it away from strong sunlight and moisture. Use a soft brush to remove dust from the embroidered flowers and tiny bees. If the toy becomes flattened, gently reshape it with your hands and let it rest upright.

  • Spot clean only with a damp cloth.
  • Do not soak the doll because stuffing may shift.
  • Dry flat on a towel, away from direct heat.
  • Keep small accessories in a soft pouch when not displayed.
  • Check buttons and sewn decorations regularly if the doll is handled often.
