Knitting Tutorial: Grey Tabby Cat – Free Knitting Pattern

This grey tabby cat knitting pattern creates a seated garden kitty with a large rounded head, white muzzle, green eyes, black tabby markings, cream cardigan with blue trim, patterned dress, striped socks, blue sandals, flower headband, shoulder bag, beret, watering can, and tiny garden trowel. The finished toy is soft, detailed, and designed as a decorative knitted doll with many charming outfit pieces.

Please note: I strive for accuracy in every pattern, but occasional errors can happen. Thank you for understanding and for enjoying my designs.

Finished Size

  • Finished seated height: about 11 in / 28 cm from sandal sole to ear tip.
  • Head width: about 4.75 in / 12 cm across the cheeks.
  • Body height: about 5 in / 13 cm before clothing.
  • Skill level: confident beginner to intermediate, because the shaping is simple but the outfit details are layered.
  • Construction: pieces are knitted mostly flat, seamed, stuffed firmly, and decorated with embroidery.

Yarn and Supplies

  • DK weight yarn in light gray for the head top, ears, outer arms, and legs.
  • DK weight yarn in white or warm cream for the face, paws, muzzle, dress base, cardigan, and sandal soles.
  • DK weight yarn in denim blue for cardigan trim, socks, dress motifs, sandals, and beret edging.
  • Small amounts of black yarn for tabby stripes, eyelids, whisker roots, mouth line, paw lines, and tail tip.
  • Small amounts of pale pink yarn for the nose.
  • Small amounts of beige yarn for the bag, headband cord, trowel handle, and watering can.
  • Small amounts of pale yellow yarn for flower centers and tiny dress accents.
  • Two green safety eyes, 10 mm to 12 mm, or embroidered eyes for a child-safe version.
  • 2.75 mm US 2 knitting needles for the doll and clothing.
  • 3.25 mm US 3 needles for softer accessories if desired.
  • Fiberfill stuffing.
  • Tapestry needle, stitch markers, pins, scissors, and a small button for the cardigan and bag flap.

Gauge

Use a firm gauge so the stuffing does not show through the knitted fabric. In stockinette stitch, aim for 7 stitches and 10 rows per inch using DK yarn and 2.75 mm needles. Exact gauge is less important than a dense, smooth fabric, but keeping the gauge close will help the clothing fit the cat correctly.

Pattern Notes

The cat in the photo has a soft oversized head, small tapered body, long dangling legs, rounded paws, and slightly forward arms. The face is the main focus, so stuff the head firmly and shape the cheeks with extra filling before closing. The eyes sit wide apart with the pink nose centered low between them.

The clothing is layered to match the image. The dress is cream with small blue and beige stranded-style marks. The cardigan is cream with denim blue bands, ribbed cuffs, and two visible buttons. The accessories are small but important: a flower headband, beige shoulder bag, blue sandals with cream flowers, striped socks, a beret, watering can, and little trowel.

Head

Work the head flat in light gray and white. The back and crown are gray, while the lower front face is white. For a clean beginner-friendly version, knit the head in light gray first, then duplicate-stitch or embroider the white face panel. For the closest look, use the color changes below.

Seam the back of the head from the crown toward the lower face. Stuff very firmly. Add more stuffing at both cheeks to create the rounded tabby shape seen in the photo. Close the lower opening neatly. Use your hands to shape the head into a wide oval, with the crown slightly flatter than the cheeks.

Muzzle and Nose Pad

The muzzle is a soft raised oval in white, placed low on the face. It should sit below the eyes and slightly overlap the lower face area.

  1. With white yarn, CO 8 sts.
  2. Row 1: P all sts.
  3. Row 2: Kfb, k6, kfb. 10 sts.
  4. Row 3: P all sts.
  5. Row 4: Kfb, k8, kfb. 12 sts.
  6. Rows 5 to 8: Work in st st.
  7. Row 9: P all sts.
  8. Row 10: SSK, k8, k2tog. 10 sts.
  9. Row 11: P all sts.
  10. Row 12: SSK, k6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  11. BO all sts, leaving a long sewing tail.

Lightly stuff the muzzle and sew it to the lower center of the face. The top edge should sit about 1 in / 2.5 cm below the eyes. With pale pink yarn, embroider a small triangular nose across the top center of the muzzle. Use short satin stitches, then add one vertical black stitch downward for the mouth.

Ears

The ears are tall, triangular, and slightly tilted outward. Knit two outer ears in gray and two inner ears in white or very pale gray.

Outer Ear, Make 2

  1. With light gray yarn, CO 18 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Work in st st.
  3. Row 5: SSK, k14, k2tog. 16 sts.
  4. Row 6 and all WS rows: P across.

  8. Row 13: SSK, k6, k2tog. 8 sts.
  9. Row 15: SSK, k4, k2tog. 6 sts.
  10. Row 17: SSK, k2, k2tog. 4 sts.
  11. Row 19: SSK, k2tog. 2 sts.
  12. Row 20: P2tog. 1 st.
  13. Fasten off.

Inner Ear, Make 2

  1. With white yarn, CO 14 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 3: Work in st st.
  3. Row 4: P all sts.
  4. Row 5: SSK, k10, k2tog. 12 sts.

  8. Row 13: SSK, k2, k2tog. 4 sts.
  9. Row 15: SSK, k2tog. 2 sts.
  10. Fasten off.

Sew one inner ear to each outer ear. Fold each ear slightly at the base and sew to the top corners of the head. Place them about 3 in / 7.5 cm apart. Angle the tips outward for the alert garden-cat expression shown in the image.

Tabby Face Markings

The black and charcoal lines are essential for the grey tabby look. Use a tapestry needle and dark gray or black yarn. Keep the stitches flat and smooth, not bulky.

  • Embroider 5 short vertical stripes on the forehead. The middle stripe is longest, about 1.25 in / 3 cm.
  • Add 2 shorter stripes on each side of the forehead, angled toward the ears.
  • Make a dark cheek stripe on each side, starting near the outer eye and curving toward the side of the face.
  • Add 2 tiny whisker-root dots or short stitches on each side of the muzzle.
  • Use thin black yarn or embroidery thread for three whiskers on each side. Each whisker should extend outward and slightly downward.
  • Add a thin black eyelid line above each green eye to match the calm expression in the picture.

Body

The body is smaller than the head and slightly pear-shaped. It will be covered by the dress and cardigan, but it still needs firm shaping so the doll sits nicely.

  1. With white or cream yarn, CO 14 sts.
  2. Row 1 WS: P all sts.
  3. Row 2 RS: Kfb in each st across. 28 sts.
  4. Row 3: P all sts.
  5. Row 4: K3, kfb, rep across. 35 sts.
  6. Row 5: P all sts.
  7. Row 6: K4, kfb, rep across. 42 sts.
  8. Rows 7 to 20: Work in st st.

  10. Row 22: K5, k2tog, rep across. 36 sts.
  11. Rows 23 to 28: Work in st st.
  12. Row 29: P all sts.
  13. Row 30: K4, k2tog, rep across. 30 sts.

  16. Row 36: K3, k2tog, rep across. 24 sts.
  17. Row 37: P all sts.
  18. Row 38: K2, k2tog, rep across. 18 sts.
  19. BO all sts, leaving a long tail.

Seam the back edge, stuff the body firmly, and close the bottom. The bottom should be rounded but slightly flattened so the cat can sit on a shelf or table. Sew the head to the body securely, using several rounds of stitches around the neck.

Legs and Paws

The legs are long enough to hang over the table edge. The lower legs show gray tabby stripes and blue-and-white socks before the sandals are added.

Leg, Make 2

  1. With white yarn, CO 14 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Work in st st for the paw toe section.
  3. Change to light gray yarn.
  4. Rows 5 to 8: Work in st st.

  7. Change to light gray yarn.
  8. Rows 11 to 14: Work in st st.
  9. Change to denim blue yarn.
  10. Rows 15 to 16: Work in st st.

  16. Rows 21 to 30: Work in st st.
  17. Row 31: K2tog across. 7 sts.
  18. Cut yarn and thread through remaining sts.

Seam each leg, stuff lightly at the top and more firmly at the foot. Flatten the paw slightly. With black yarn, embroider two short vertical toe lines on each white paw. Sew the legs to the lower front of the body so they hang downward with a relaxed seated angle.

Arms

The arms are slim with white paws, gray upper sections, and blue cardigan cuffs. They sit slightly away from the body, as seen in the image.

  1. With white yarn, CO 12 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 4: Work in st st.
  3. Change to light gray yarn.
  4. Rows 5 to 16: Work in st st.
  5. Change to denim blue yarn.
  6. Rows 17 to 20: Work in k1, p1 rib for the visible cardigan cuff.
  7. Change to cream yarn.
  8. Rows 21 to 28: Work in st st for the sleeve section.
  9. Row 29: K2tog across. 6 sts.
  10. Cut yarn and thread through remaining sts.

Seam each arm and stuff lightly. Do not overstuff the arms because they should hang softly beside the cardigan. Embroider one small black curve on each paw. Sew arms to the upper sides of the body after the dress is in place but before the cardigan is fully buttoned.

Tail

The image shows a small dark tail detail peeking behind the outfit. Make a simple curved tail with a black tip.

  1. With light gray yarn, CO 10 sts.
  2. Rows 1 to 18: Work in st st.
  3. Rows 19 to 22: Change to black yarn and work in st st.
  4. Row 23: K2tog across. 5 sts.
  5. Cut yarn and thread through remaining sts.

Seam and lightly stuff the tail. Curve it as you sew by placing slightly tighter stitches on one side. Attach it to the back of the body, letting the black tip peek out from the cardigan side.

Seam the back of the dress from the hem upward, leaving the top 1 in / 2.5 cm open so it can slip over the body. Place the dress on the cat and close the top opening with a small stitch or snap if desired. The hem should rest over the upper socks, with the legs visible below.

Extra Dress Embroidery

  • Add small blue duplicate-stitch V shapes around the lower skirt.
  • Add beige dots between the blue motifs for a garden-style pattern.
  • Place a narrow blue line across the upper bodice to echo the small patterned panel in the photo.
  • Keep the embroidery light so the skirt still drapes softly.

The sandals are blue with cream soles and cream flower decorations. They fit over the white paws and should look like open-toe garden sandals.

Eyes and Expression

Place the green eyes before the head is fully closed if you are using safety eyes. Position them about 1.35 in / 3.5 cm apart, centered above the muzzle. The eyes should be large and calm, with the gaze facing forward.

  • For embroidered eyes, make an oval in dark green yarn and outline it with black.
  • Add one tiny white highlight stitch to each eye.
  • Use black yarn to make a fine upper eyelid curve.
  • Keep the mouth small and simple so the cat remains sweet and gentle.

Finishing the Paws and Socks

The socks and sandals are highly visible because the cat is seated. Make sure the legs are sewn evenly and the feet point slightly outward. Add extra blue duplicate stitches around the ankle area if the stripes need to look stronger.

  • Use black yarn to embroider two toe separations on each paw.
  • Use one short black stripe on each lower leg above the sock.
  • Add a second gray shadow stitch if your black stripe looks too heavy.
  • Sew sandals after the legs are attached, so the strap angle matches the seated position.

Assembly Order

  1. Knit, seam, and stuff the head.
  2. Add the muzzle, nose, eyes, mouth, whiskers, and tabby markings.
  3. Knit and attach the ears.
  4. Knit, seam, and stuff the body.
  5. Sew the head securely to the body.
  6. Knit and attach the legs, checking that the cat sits evenly.
  7. Knit and attach the tail at the back.
  8. Put the dress on the body and close the back seam.
  9. Knit the arms and sleeves, then attach arms at the shoulders.
  10. Put on the cardigan and sew the buttons in place.
  11. Add sandals, flowers, bag, and headband.
  12. Knit the table props: beret, watering can, and trowel.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

Use a long needle to gently shape the face. Insert the needle behind the head, come out near one eye, take a tiny stitch, and return to the back. Pull very gently to set the eyes into the face. Repeat on the other side so both eyes are even.

Add forehead stripes last, after the ears are attached. This lets you angle the stripes naturally between the ears. The central stripe should point toward the nose, while the outer stripes lean slightly outward. Add cheek stripes after the muzzle is sewn on so the markings frame the face correctly.

Before the final knot, check the cat from the front, side, and seated view. Adjust the cardigan, bag strap, and sandals until the doll looks balanced. The head should be large and expressive, the body smaller, and the legs relaxed over the edge.

Care Notes

  • Spot clean only with cool water and mild soap.
  • Do not machine wash if safety eyes, buttons, or small accessories are attached.
  • Let the toy air dry flat on a towel.
  • Reshape the ears, bag, and sandals while damp if needed.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  • The head is firmly stuffed and wider than the body.
  • The ears are tall, triangular, and angled outward.
  • The green eyes are even and framed with black eyelid stitches.
  • The white muzzle is centered with a small pink nose.
  • The cardigan has blue trim, ribbed cuffs, and two buttons.
  • The cream dress shows blue and beige garden-style motifs.
  • The socks, sandals, flowers, bag, headband, beret, watering can, and trowel are all included.

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

Store the finished grey tabby cat away from direct sunlight to protect the pale cream, blue, and gray yarn colors. If dust gathers on the surface, use a soft brush and move gently in the direction of the knitted stitches.

Keep the small props together in a shallow display tray or beside the seated cat. If the bag strap stretches over time, remove it from the shoulder and let it rest flat overnight. For long-term display, support the back of the doll so the head does not pull the neck forward.
