Project Overview and Comprehensive Material List

Before casting on, it is essential to understand the scope of this project. The Hibiscus Resort-Card Bunny is an advanced-beginner to intermediate project that focuses on structural shaping, colorwork (intarsia or duplicate stitch), and miniature detailing. The doll stands approximately 12 inches tall, depending on your gauge and stuffing density.

The outfit is designed to be removable, adding an element of playfulness. The accessories—including the “Hibiscus Resort” bag, the sunglasses, and the parrot—require patience and precision but are excellent for using up scrap yarn. The result is a cohesive scene that tells a story of a holiday adventure.

Yarn Requirements

To replicate the look in the photograph, you will need a DK (Double Knitting) or Light Worsted weight yarn. The color palette is crucial for the tropical theme.

  • Main Body Color (Cream/Off-White): Approximately 100g. Choose a yarn with a round twist to ensure the facial features stand out clearly against the fabric.
  • Dress Base Color (Sand/Beige): 80g. This neutral tone serves as the perfect canvas for the bright floral motifs.
  • Hibiscus Red (Bright Scarlet): 40g. Used for the flowers on the skirt, the cardigan, and the parrot.
  • Leaf Green (Olive or Grass Green): 30g. For the stems, leaves, and the cardigan border.
  • Orange and Yellow: Small amounts (approx. 10g each) for the flower centers and the parrot’s beak and wings.
  • Accessory Colors (Blue, Black, Brown): Scraps for the postcards, sunglasses, and bag lettering.

Tools and Notions

  • Knitting Needles: A pair of US 3 (3.25mm) straight needles. Using a needle size slightly smaller than the yarn band recommendation creates a dense fabric that prevents stuffing from showing through.
  • Double Pointed Needles (DPNs): US 3 (3.25mm) for knitting small circumferences like the parrot and the bag strap, or for making I-cords.
  • Tapestry Needle: A blunt-ended needle is essential for seaming the pieces together using mattress stitch and for weaving in ends.
  • Embroidery Needle: A sharp chenille needle is required for the facial embroidery and the fine details on the postcards and bag.
  • Stuffing: Premium polyester fiberfill. Look for a “carded” type that is smooth and resists clumping.
  • Safety Eyes: Two 9mm black safety eyes. Alternatively, black embroidery floss can be used for a baby-safe option.
  • Stitch Holders: To secure stitches when moving between leg and body sections.
  • Wire or Pipe Cleaners (Optional): To add structure to the sunglasses and the parrot’s feet.

Part 1: The Bunny Construction

The construction of the bunny begins with the legs, which are knitted separately and then joined to form the body. This seamless transition ensures stability and eliminates the need for a difficult seam at the crotch.

Legs (Make 2)

We start at the sole of the foot using the Main Body Color (Cream). Note that the shoes are knitted separately, so this section represents the bunny’s bare foot.

  1. Cast On: Cast on 12 stitches leaving a long tail for sewing the bottom seam later.
  2. Row 1: Purl all stitches.
  3. Row 2 (Increase): Knit into the front and back (kfb) of the first stitch, Knit 10, kfb in the last stitch. (14 sts).
  4. Row 3: Purl all stitches.
  5. Row 4 (Increase): Kfb, Knit 12, kfb. (16 sts).
  6. Row 5: Purl all stitches.
  7. Rows 6-8: Work in Stockinette Stitch (Knit on Right Side, Purl on Wrong Side) for 3 rows.
  8. Row 9 (Shape Toe): Knit 5, Slip 1, Knit 1, Pass slipped stitch over (skpo), Knit 2, Knit 2 together (k2tog), Knit 5. (14 sts).
  9. Row 10: Purl all stitches.
  10. Row 11 (Shape Ankle): Knit 5, Slip 2 together knitwise, Knit 1, Pass slipped stitches over (Center Double Decrease), Knit 6. (12 sts).
  11. Row 12: Purl all stitches. The foot shape is now complete.
  12. Rows 13-38: Work straight in Stockinette Stitch for 26 rows to create the leg.
  13. First Leg: Cut the yarn and place stitches on a holder.
  14. Second Leg: Repeat the instructions above but do not cut the yarn. We will proceed directly to joining the legs.

Joining the Body

We will now bridge the two legs together to form the base of the torso.

  1. Row 39 (Join): With the second leg on your right-hand needle, Knit across the 12 stitches. Cast on 4 stitches (using the backward loop method). These stitches form the space between the legs. Knit across the 12 stitches of the first leg from the holder. You now have 28 stitches.
  2. Row 40: Purl all stitches. Be careful to purl the 4 cast-on stitches tightly to avoid any gaps.
  3. Rows 41-55: Work straight in Stockinette Stitch. This forms the lower tummy area.
  4. Row 56 (Hip Shaping): Knit 6, kfb, Knit 14, kfb, Knit 6. (30 sts).
  5. Row 57: Purl all stitches.
  6. Rows 58-70: Work straight. Stuff the legs firmly now, as access will become difficult later.
  7. Row 71 (Waist Decrease): Knit 7, k2tog, Knit 12, skpo, Knit 7. (28 sts).
  8. Row 72: Purl all stitches.
  9. Row 73: Knit 6, k2tog, Knit 12, skpo, Knit 6. (26 sts).
  10. Row 74: Purl all stitches.

  12. Row 76: Purl all stitches.
  13. Row 77: Knit 4, k2tog, Knit 12, skpo, Knit 4. (22 sts).
  14. Row 78: Purl all stitches. Do not cast off. We will continue directly into the head.

The Head

The head is knitted directly onto the body neck stitches. We need to increase stitches rapidly to create the round, chubby cheeks typical of a bunny.

  1. Row 79 (Neck Expansion): Kfb in every stitch across the row. (44 sts).
  2. Row 80: Purl all stitches.
  3. Row 81 (Cheek Expansion): *Knit 3, kfb* repeat to the last 4 stitches, Knit 4. (54 sts).
  4. Rows 82-102: Work straight in Stockinette Stitch for 21 rows. This large canvas provides space for the facial features.
  5. Row 103 (Crown Decrease): *Knit 4, k2tog* repeat to end.
  6. Row 104: Purl all stitches.
  7. Row 105: *Knit 3, k2tog* repeat to end.
  8. Row 106: Purl all stitches.
  9. Row 107: *Knit 2, k2tog* repeat to end.
  10. Row 108: Purl all stitches.
  11. Row 109: *Knit 1, k2tog* repeat to end.
  12. Row 110: k2tog across all stitches.
  13. Finish: Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Thread through remaining stitches, pull tight to close the top of the head, and secure.

Arms (Make 2)

  • Work 26 rows in Stockinette Stitch.
  • Decrease 1 stitch at each end of the next row. (8 sts).
  • Purl one row.
  • Cast off. Sew the side seam. Stuff the hand area firmly but the upper arm lightly so it lays flat against the body.

The Long Lop Ears (Make 2)

The ears are a defining feature. They are knitted long and folded to frame the face.

  • Cast on 14 stitches.
  • Rows 1-4: Knit every row (Garter Stitch) to prevent the edges from curling.
  • Row 5: Knit 2, Purl 10, Knit 2.
  • Row 6: Knit all stitches.
  • Repeat Rows 5 and 6 until the ear measures approximately 6.5 inches.
  • Decrease: k2tog at the start of every Knit row until 2 stitches remain. Fasten off.

Part 2: The Tropical Hibiscus Dress

This dress is the centerpiece of the outfit, featuring a vibrant floral border. The colorwork can be done using the Intarsia method for cleaner blocks of color, or duplicate stitch (Swiss darning) after the piece is knitted.

The Skirt

Chart Note: You will be creating large 5-petal flowers using Red yarn with Orange centers. Space them evenly across the skirt (approx 3 flowers on the front). Use Green for small leaves between the flowers. If you are not comfortable with colorwork charts, simply knit the skirt in Beige and embroider the flowers later using duplicate stitch.

  4. Rows 21-30: Continue in Beige Stockinette Stitch.
  5. Waist Decrease: *Knit 4, k2tog* repeat across. (50 sts).
  6. Purl one row.
  7. *Knit 3, k2tog* repeat across. (40 sts).
  8. Purl one row.

This hat features a textured brim and a decorative red trim.

  1. Using Yellow/Straw color yarn, cast on 50 stitches.

Final Assembly and Facial Detailing

The assembly process brings the character to life. Take your time with the seams to ensure a neat finish.

Seaming and Stuffing

Legs and Body: Use the mattress stitch to sew the back seams. Start at the heel, work up the leg, and continue up the center back of the body. When you reach the neck, pause to stuff.

Stuffing Technique: Stuff the feet very firmly to create a flat base so the bunny can stand (leaning against something). Stuff the legs moderately. Stuff the body firmly. It is critical to stuff the neck area extremely firmly to support the head and prevent it from flopping.

Head and Face Sculpting

Sew the back of the head seam. Stuff the head into a firm, round sphere.

Eye Sockets: Thread a long needle with Cream yarn. Insert at the base of the neck, come out at the left eye position, go back in one stitch over, pass through the stuffing to the right eye position, go out and back in one stitch over, and return to the neck. Pull the yarn tight to indent the face slightly. Knot securely.

Attaching Features

  • Eyes: Insert safety eyes into the indented sockets. If using buttons or beads, sew them on securely.
  • Nose: Use dark brown embroidery thread. Satin stitch a “Y” shape. The top V forms the nose, and the vertical line forms the mouth.
  • Ears: Sew the cast-on edge of the ears to the sides of the head. Position them slightly back from the center line. Curve the attachment seam slightly to make the ears cup forward.

Dressing the Bunny

1. Dress: Slip the dress onto the bunny. Button or snap the back bodice.

2. Cardigan: Put the cardigan on over the dress.

3. Hat: Place the straw hat on the head. You may want to tack it in place with a few stitches if it is not meant to be removable.

4. Shoes: Put the shoes on the feet.

5. Accessories: Hang the bag over one shoulder. Place the postcards inside. Position the sunglasses near the hand or on the face. Place the parrot next to the bunny.

Care Notes

This handcrafted bunny requires gentle care to maintain its shape and vibrant colors.

  • Cleaning: Spot clean only using a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not submerge the bunny in water, especially if you used wire for the sunglasses or cardboard in the shoes.
  • Sunlight: Keep the bunny out of direct sunlight for extended periods to prevent the red and green yarns from fading.
  • Maintenance: If the bunny is played with, the stuffing may compress. You can gently massage the limbs and body to redistribute the fiberfill.

Quick Checklist Before You Finish

  1. Loose Ends: Are all yarn tails woven in and hidden inside the body cavity?
  2. Neck Stability: Is the head flopping? If so, open a small seam at the neck and add more stuffing.
  3. Safety: Are the safety eyes secure? If this is for a small child, ensure no small parts (like beads or wire) are accessible.
  4. Embroidery: Is the “Hibiscus Resort” text legible?

Detailed Cleaning and Preservation Guidelines

For those intending to keep this bunny as a long-term collectible:

  • Dust Prevention: Store the bunny in a glass cabinet or a dust-free shelf. Use a soft makeup brush to gently dust the crevices of the knitted fabric.
  • Storage: If storing away, place the bunny in a breathable cotton bag (like a pillowcase). Add a sachet of lavender or cedar to repel moths, which are attracted to wool fibers.
  • Humidity: Avoid storing in damp areas like basements to prevent mildew.
  • Repair: Keep a small amount of the original yarn colors in a labeled bag. This will be invaluable if you ever need to repair a snag or hole in the future.

We hope you enjoy the creative process of bringing the Hibiscus Resort-Card Bunny to life. May it bring a touch of sunshine and holiday spirit to your home.
